Quite Frankly, this is much ado about nothing

Posted on 21 July 2006 by Andy

My show is tewwible!

Some of you might be stopping by today just because Teddy G. wrote a column today about Dusty Baker backing out of an appearance on “Quite Frankly With Stephen A. Smith” set for Monday. Dusty’s reason for backing out was that that he found out, from our pal, Len Kasper that an associate producer for the show was e-mailing Cubs “blogs” and asking us to promote Dusty’s appearance and to give out information about how fans could get free tickets. In the first e-mail, the author, Quite Frankly Associate Producer Jackea Chan said, “You guys can definitely feel free to BOO Dusty if you so please. ”

That seemed a little fishy to me. So I posted the e-mail message on our messageboard.

Here’s the original e-mail.

Subject: ESPN: Special Invitation – Chicago Cubs Manager Dusty Baker

My name is Jackea Chan and I am an Assistant Associate Audience Producer for ESPN2’s sports talk show Quite Frankly with Stephen A. Smith.

The reason I am contacting you is that we have just been notified that on Monday, July 24th, Current Chicago Cubs Manager Dusty Baker is scheduled to appear LIVE in studio!

We would like to extend to you and your website FREE tickets to attend the show. We realize that this would be a great opportunity for some of your forum members to get together and meet up for an exciting sports show. You guys can definitely feel free to BOO Dusty if you so please. The tickets are open to your all interested members, family members, friends, and co-workers.

Our studio is located in the heart of New York City, across the street from Madison Square Garden. Again the show date is Monday, July 24th at 11:15am with a 9:30am check-in.

If you or any of your members are interested in attending the show, please call me at 646-708-7150 or email Jackea.X.Chan.-nd@espn.com. Please provide your first and last name, telephone number with area code and spell your email address. Someone from Audience Services will contact you if your reservation has been accepted.

The bold is Jackea’s not mine.

The same e-mail went to Kurt Evans at Goatriders of the Apocalypse and he sent it along to Will at Deadspin.

That is apparently when the crap hit the fan. Because I then got this e-mail from Jackea.

Notice the “to” line. Strange, I know. But I got it anyway. I figure it was CC’d to a whole bunch of people an effort to CYA.

All I know is the “boo” line was in the first one, and not the second. I wasn’t sure the first one was real, but apparently it was. I just figured then that Jackea actually knew what it would take to get a crowd to hang with Dusty. One that wanted to boo him.

But in the end, quite frankly, I just don’t care.

  1. Outlook Guy Says:

I suspect that Jackea ‘sent the e-mail to himself’ is that he was in a hurry to send the corrected version out to everyone he sent it to, and so BCCed them all at once (so that no one who received the message could tell who else the message was sent to). His e-mail program probably requires at least one person in the ‘To’ field.

Quite frankly, I wouldn’t be surprised if Jackea isn’t looking for a new job (not the he did anything that the producers of the show didn’t want, but because they need a fall guy)

  2. therick711 Says:

    Screamin’ A,

Quite frankly, I’ve had enough. I am counting down the cancellation of your show.

  3. Dusty Baker Says:

Dudes, its not really Jackea’s fault. I think its the weather in New York, or maybe something in the water. Dude, I went fishing over in Long Island once, and I swear they have some of the biggest fish I’ve ever seen. Back in the day, me and Hank Aaron used to play an afternoon game and then head over to Long Island and go fishing for hours. Man that is when baseball was a real sport, I tell ya. Anyways, it’s really no one’s fault. It’s never anyone’s fault but you dudes know that.

  4. Matt Turvey Says:

Lots of positive press about us, the “New USA” team getting together for the Worlds next month. We’re respectful, professional, committed… et al.

    But lest you think we really are working our tails off in these much talked-about two-a-day practices, see this line from yahoo.com/nba;

“Krzyzewski ended both of his first two practices earlier than he expected because his players already had picked up everything he planned to teach.”

    OK, well, that’s alright then.

  5. Glendon Rusch Says:

What? I got to bail Mary out in the 4th. Glad you signed me to that 2 year deal now?

  6. Mark Prior Says:

I am trying to tell you guys….it is better that I stay OFF the mound. I’m done for. Have fun crying to 2003 highlight reels

  7. Aramis Ramirez Says:

WOOO!!! Nothing like opening day female doges! This is going to be the best year ever!

  8. Defeat Says:

the Cubs just snatched me from the jaws of victory. They’re good at that.

  9. Hi I'm... Says:

Mark Prior of the ouch. My vocal cords. Pain! Glendon!

    Glendon: yes?

    Mark: relieve me!

    Glendon: er, uh..oh. Chicago Cu…

    two run homer

  10. For Sale Sign Says:

Why am I not on the back of Todd Walker?

    or Phil Nevin

or every Cub but D-Lee for that matter?

  11. BiG Z Says:

You want to sell me too? I keel you!

  12. Sean Marshall Says:

Prior told me this is the best way to get a late-July vacation. Cya in 2007!

  13. M Prior Says:

Did I leave a couple of injuries on the mound? Scott, Sean did you guys see my injuries that I left on the mound? You did? Could you get them for me? Thanks.

  14. Scott Williamson Says:

  15. 29 other baseball teams; every football, hockey and basketball team besides the Knicks Says:

HAHAHAHA YOU ARE CUBS FANS!!! HAHAHAHAH YOU SUCK

  16. Carlos Marmol Says:

Hey Mark, I can go get those for you. But i can’t use my pitching hand

  17. M Prior Says:

It looks like I did leave another injury on the mound. Carlos thanks for picking it up. Before you go can you get my purse too?

  18. Jackea Chan Says:

The real culprit in this case was Brooce Lee, not me.

  19. Sloth Says:

One question: Is Jackea Chan a real name?

  20. Chicago Blackhawk fans Says:

#15, do not include us. We don’t even exist anymore

Hey Marky, I found one of your injuries while I was trotting past the mound at the end of yesterday’s game. Want it back?

Hurry though, I am going on vacation for the rest of the summer

  22. M Prior Says:

No Derrek, that ‘s okay my wrists are weak enough. In fact they’re limp most of the time.

  23. All but 5 people in Chicago Says:

    What’s a Blackhawk?

  24. Dusty Says:

Hey my contract is under 100 days

  25. Dusty Baker Says:

DUDES RESIGN ME NOW!!! NEIFIS STILL GOT A LOT OF GAME LEFT. WHO ELSE WILL PLAY HIM?!?!!?

  26. Mark Prior Says:

No Cubs Live when the FRANCHISE is pitching? I pity you.

OW my groin. Curse you Andy

  27. M Prior Says:

Looks like the Mets left their hits in the dugout, BEYOTCHES

  28. Mark Prior's hand Says:

OW! Oh well it was only a matter of time…
