Title: Heavy Metal Friday
Post by: The Slak on December 08, 2006, 10:22:47 AM
Master of Puppets, Ride the Lightning and right now Countdown to Extinction are carrying me through this glorious Friday morning. In hours I'll be in a UC Supersuite watching the Bulls dismantle the Raptors.

I cannot understate the excellence of Countdown. Symphony of Destruction is steak balls.

Christmas music from 5 Jewish boys from LI...

I remember paying $2 to see them do Sabbath covers on Staten Island in the late 70s/early 80s.

Obligatory hand-wringing nit-picking nay-saying contrarian dick ass post response to the mere mention of Metallica.

I would prescribe some Manowar's Kings of Metal for indoctrination, but Manowar are the Guiness World Book of Record's loudest band ever, after all.  Heck, I bet Fork's dad could offer up some sweet metal hymns.  By divine right -- hail, and kill!

"May your sword stay wet
like a young girl in her prime
Hold your hammers high"

Shit, fire away. I don't care if you wanna call them a bunch of pole smokers. They are. Nostalgia is what it is. It's what makes me still possess a copy of Third Eye Blind's first album.

Wow, this thread got very un-metal very quick.

Anyone else ever listened to Mastodon (http://www.last.fm/music/Mastodon)?

How about Boris (http://www.last.fm/music/Boris)? Japanese metal.

Time to resurrect this thread.

Siberian Divide by Mastodon is an ass-kicking fuckyesathon that you (you metal fan, you) need to listen to today right before you go out and punch a shark in the face.

It can be found on the album Blood Mountain.

Also - band of the week: Pelican (http://www.last.fm/music/Pelican)

If you like metal, post-rock, sludge or any of that kind of stuff - this is for you.

Their new album sound like early 90's Soundgarden production mixed with Hum. They're really, really good and their local. It's a win-win.

Converge is a really, really good band.

Also, I think I'm gay for Opeth. Watershed is fantastic.

Anyone ever listened to Amon Amarth?

I'm guessing no.

I've got Fate of Norns by Amon Amarth. I like it a lot.

Speaking of Opeth, I'm listening to Still Life right now. That album blisters.

I've been getting into what is apparently called "Post-Metal" lately. Stuff like Isis, Made Out Of Babies, Rosetta, and Battle of Mice. Actually, Pelican is in that category, too.

As far as Amon Amarth goes - check out the song Guardians of Asgaard and tell me you don't want to go beat up a skyscraper.

I illegally downloaded recently obtained a Russian Circles album. I haven't listened to it yet--I remembered Opeth and have sort have sat in a bleak Scandinavian Murderrapebetrayalhaze (with acoustic interludes) since last Thursday. I'll put it on the shortlist.

I'm not really sure if they intended this result, but hearing this makes me want to go out on the tundra, and slay polar bears with my bear hands. Then take short acoustic breaks where I buy the surviving polar bears beers. Then slay the surviving bears.

Currently listening to Neurosis & Jarboe, an album I just heard about a few days ago. This is one of those collaborations where the moment I heard about it I pretty much slapped my forehead and said "OF COURSE." They are the Reese's cup of side projects.

"Hey, you got creepy, goth-doom female vocals in my post-metal ambientnoisehell!"
"You got post-metal ambientnoisehell in my creepy, goth-doom female vocals!"

Quite possibly the most sinister album I've ever heard. It's the creepy-as-fuck soundtrack to a horror movie that no one would have the balls to make.

I never thought I would see the term 'drone doom' used here.  Nice!
This is not your father's Heavy Metal Friday.

So Morph can't dust off his Stryper albums?

To hell with the devil!

Why can't you people just leave Jon and Slaky to their courtship?

I like to meddle.

We already know that Gojira is fucking awesome. I hadn't heard their album entitled Terra Incognita until recently and there's a song on there called Satan is a Lawyer that's fantastic. I'll try and find a link to the song when I get home from work but I think it's about Miroslav Satan and his other profession. I could be wrong. Maybe it's about a guy named Stan and they made a typo. Could be any number of things, really.

If you guys are looking for more doom/drone, ever try Agalloch?  They can sound extreme at times, but hey, this is the metal thread, right?  No need for disclaimers here.  Difficult to pick one song to link, but I'll go with -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQitsTvGvko.  Like most drone, it can take awhile to go anywhere.  But if you stick around long enough, you will be rewarded.  The riff at 2:33 sets the tone for the rest of the song.

I've been having decent luck with Redemption lately.  It's a project from some of the guys from Fates Warning and Agent Steel.  The sound is more of that laid back DT-ish prog.  It isn't blowing my socks off or anything, but makes for a very nice listen.

Speaking of decent luck, I'm just now getting back into last.fm.  I tried their radio and I was insta-hooked.  So much great trance/chillout/downtempo that I've never dreamed of hearing before.  And reggae!  Even their salsa station rules!  So awesome.  I know I'm behind the times, but shit, count me glad to be where I'm at.

I never got big into black metal, beyond Venom and (very occasionally) Bathory.

I'm no expert on ambient metal outside of the Neurosis/Tribes of Neurot axis, though I've got a soft spot for Sunn 0))).

I know about Sun 0))) but I haven't really listened to them much. I love Boris however and I know they've played together quite a bit. I guess metalheads would cringe at the notion of calling Boris metal - but whatever.

Emperor is legit.  Bathory's Blood Fire Death holds up surprisingly well over time, but you've probably already heard that album.  Immortal is a must, of course.

For folk metal, opinions on Vintersorg may vary, but I'll stand by the EP Hedniskhjärtad any day of the week.

For sure. I saw Emperor live in 2006, I don't think that can ever be topped, amazing show. Big Vintersorg fan too, they remind me a lot of one of my all time favorites, Windir.

Also: I saw BORIS and Russian Circles at the Metro on Friday night and it was fucking awesome.

Russian Circles is a like a more metal version of Explosions in the Sky (think a more noodly Pelican) and they're from Chicago. Bonus: they shred.

Boris is from Japan and they're weird as hell and loud as fuck. Their drummer wore a rhinestone backless shirt and white gloves. He also has a large gong behind him that he likes to crash to signal the beginning of certain songs. Then he beats the everloving shit out of his drum kit. The lead singer plays a double axe. The lead guitarist is a hot Japanese chick that wails and rips through all of their songs.

In other words, next time Boris comes all the way from Japan to play in Chicago you better get your ass out and go see them for less than 20 dollars.

Russian Circles is a like a more metal version of Explosions in the Sky (think a more noodly Pelican) and they're from Chicago. Bonus: they shred.

This is very intriguing. Is there a certain track I should listen to?

Can't really go wrong with Death Rides a Horse.

Yea, this is pretty good. I always like Explosions in the Sky, but these guys address my need for something a little more "stronger" when it comes to pure instrumental music.

Check out Geneva. Closed their set with it. Fucking awesome.

Wow. These guys are damn good.. Damn. Good.

I'm liking Nevermore's newest album.  I'm ranking it below some of their other greats, but it's still very worthy.  Jeff Loomis can still find new ways to shred ears via riff.

I waited all the way till Friday to post this.

I don't get it either. His new stuff is probably going to be weird and stupid. I hate new things.

I find their research methods spotty, as I'm pretty sure there's nothing occult about White Zombie naming themselves after a really boring Bela Lugosi movie. [/PedantNerd]

Decrepit Birth - Polarity

If you like technical/brutal death metal with great technical play and a bit of melody to keep the songs from sounding alike: you could do worse than to listen to this.

If you don't: why the fuck are you reading this thread, Apex?

I'm going to look for this.

In other news, the Mastodon Live at the Aragon album was just released. Haven't heard it yet but I'm hesitant to pull the trigger at 12.99.

I was searching for some new metal last night and downloaded an album called Precambrian by The Ocean. People seem to think this is a pinnacle of heavy music and I'm pretty excited to get into it. All the song names are like Hadean, Palaeoarchean, etc.

So we'll see how this goes.
