Title: New Xbox Experience Sploogefest Thread.
Post by: Philberto on November 19, 2008, 09:36:13 AM
Well, I was going to get this downloaded this morning but about 1/3 into the download, my internet decided to be the little bitch that it is and not cooperate anymore. I'm predicting that this will be a very splooge-worthy update. The screenshots look great. Obviously, the whole avatar thing is a knock-off of Wii's Mii. I see no wrong in trying to emulate what Nintendo did so well. I do not know all the new little perks that this system has but I am looking forward to exploring them. One that I think has been added is that you can now do private chat between more than just 2 parties. That is something I've wanted for a while.

I was going to start this thread.  I woke up early to take a quick look at it this morning.  I will say that it's pretty confusing trying to find everything at first, but it certainly looks cool.  I'm sure once I get used to where everything is at, I'll like it more.  The Netflix thing was predictably fucked this morning, since I'm sure everyone was trying to get it set up.  I was a little pissed, since that's the feature I want most.  Incidentally, Sony is not allowing you to stream anything from whichever movie studio it owns.  They're real charmers.  I'm hoping MS pays them for the rights to do so eventually.

I made my little gheyvatar.  I'm INDIFFERENT to that addition, but it certainly doesn't hurt.  I installed Gears 2 onto my HD, which only took about 5 minutes.  I didn't get to play it, but I'll give it a shot tonight so I can enjoy the quietness of the 360 and save some wear on the optical drive.

There were two fantastic additions which have gone unmentioned (at least not in the stuff I've read).  One was changing that stupid goddamn alphabetical keyboard to a QWERTY keyboard.  It is so much faster typing stuff in with the controller.  The other was allowing you to change your options so that a game doesn't start up automatically when you close the disc tray.  I like that.  I would sometimes put in a game when I was up, but would still want to browse the dashboard, so I'd just leave the tray open until I was ready.  This allows you to close the drive, yet still choose when you're ready to play.

So in other words, Microsoft took a buncha shit that everyone else did well, and slapped their own brand on it?

I'm shocked.

You can install games on the HD now?  Like the full game?  If so, I think it might be time I upgraded to the 120 GB drive...

About how much space does a game take on the HD?

Good question.  I read a thread somewhere suggesting that you could probably have 2-3 games on your HD even if you had the 20 GB HD.  I would guess they average around 5 GB, but that's a completely wild guess on my part.

Or THIS (http://www.stripesonfire.com/nsc/).

That's pretty big installs.  But it's worth it for something like Rock Band 2, that I'd just pick up and play a lot.  On the other hand, that's not exactly a game that takes advantage of installing on the HDD.

I did just update the 360 though, and the new setup is pretty cool.  The avatar thing, for completely ripping off the Mii isn't that bad.  The interface, however, I find kind of odd.  It almost feels like they've taken things out, or at the very least made navigation much more difficult.  I do like the new setup for when you hit the Guide button though.  The old pop-out dash was annoying.  Oh, and where do you set the keyboard for QWERTY?  I couldn't find it in the settings anywhere.

It's not just automatically QWERTY for you?  It was for me.

Also, you still need the original disc to boot up the game if you do the HD install.  I'm sure MS would have seriously problems with game theft if they didn't still require the original disc.

It basically decreases load times, isn't that the point?

Right.  Again, making Rock Band a horrible choice for install.  Mass Effect would probably be a good one to put on there.  Basically anything with long load times.

I suspect I'll probably rotate a handful of the games I play most often on there to reduce the use of the optical drive.  It's definitely a neat feature to have (I think the PS3 has had it since launch, right?).

Finally downloaded this last night, and even though it is different and will take some getting used to, I am very happy with it. I like the visual changes. It looks very modern and seams to flow pretty well. I have no real objection to it as of yet. Does anyone know if there were supposed to be games you could play online for free with other people? I seam to remember hearing somewhere that there were very simple games that you could play against other avatars and you wouldn't have to pay for them. I couldn't find anything on them last night, so I'm starting to think I might be wrong in my recollection of that.

What's the word on installing games to your hard drive?  I've heard responses from all over the spectrum.

On one end -- "Eliminates disc noise, runs smoother, cuts down load times, makes for a better experience"

On the other -- "::KEYBOARD SMASH::  FUCK MICROSOFT, increases load times, glitches games, ruins console, makes for a shittier experience"

What's a guy to do?  I can't exactly get access to my XLive account right now (even though it just auto renewed), but I'm interested to hear about this aspect of it.  Eliminating disc noise and reducing the strain on the console would be a huge factor for me.

I can say that the Netflix thing is awesome.

I can second this.  I watched all 15 episodes of the second season of FNL this week (well, 13, since I'd watched the first two when they were released).  Great stuff, and they're only going to increase the selection.

Simmer, I installed the games I figure I'll play most (Gears 2, Fallout 3, Left 4 Dead, Saints Row 2, NHL 09) this weekend.  The only one I've given significant play time to is Gears, and it's really nice to not have to listen to your optical drive grinding away.  Plus, the install process only takes about 5 minutes.

Pre installed Fallout 3, and he said it's like a totally different experience.  For the better.

I don't have that big ass hard drive like you do. I'd really like to do this for those games though.

I bet you can fit 1 or 2 at a time, though.  Most games are only about 6 GB or so.

I've got about 5 GB left - not sure what I need to delete. Probably some demos that I didn't want in the first place. But I think the Rock Band songs are taking up quite a bit of space.

What's the word on installing games to your hard drive?  I've heard responses from all over the spectrum.

I've only installed one game (FA3), but it kicks total ass across the board.  I would assume newer games and all games going forward will work smooth since they were tested with this feature so they will work well.

Old games are probably more hit or miss.

Yes, they do.  RB was a big motivator behind the decision to upgrade to the Elite.  That, and the 360 crapping out again.

Oh, and if anyone is still playing Halo 3, Bungie says DON'T install it to the HD, because it will actually run worse.  I'm looking at you, BananaHands.

Signed up for the beta/test/preview thing.  Emails for it should go out today at 5 Central.  I guess they still have room if anyone else wants to give it a whirl.

Did anyone get into the trial?  I never got an e-mail, but I got the update the other day.  The Netflix stuff and some of the achievement display stuff is pretty good.  Also, there's a possibility that the update significantly reduces the space required to install some games to the HD (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/03/new-xbox-update-to-shrink-some-hard-drive-installs/).  That would be awesome, if true.

The update came about a week or two ago, but only some people were actually able to use them.  They're unlocked for everyone now.

Since I've been using last.fm for almost 5 years, I've got a whole bunch of tags and radio stations and whatevers making the last.fm application completely awesome. Now instead of running a cord to my mac and changing the receiver I can just log on to xbox and stream music right from there. Fantastic.

I've never used Last.FM before yesterday, but I have my PC in the same room as my Sexbox, so it probably won't get used much anyways.  The one thing I was curious about though, is can you play music from Last.FM while you're playing a game on the 360?

Pretty sure you cannot. When you exit last.fm you exit the application and it shuts down.

That's definitely boneriffic. Much better than attaching the HDMI to the computer and trying to get it to play something on the TV. I actually did that with the Chuck finale yesterday. Unfortunately, either because I have too much porn or too little porn, my computer doesn't play fullscreen videos very well so I had to keep it the size that Hulu defaults. So instead of getting the full 58" experience, I had to suffer through a 22" experience. It's a tough life.

Talked to Gamestop. I can trade in the Elite and a few games and get up to around $270 and then buy the bundle with Natal.. Put me out an extra $130... So, I'll get a new system with a bigger hard drive and the Natal for less than what it would have been to buy the Natal. Plus, I have a friend that'll buy the old 120 GB HD from me for $30-40..

Will that price still be around by the time the Kinect comes out, though?  I'd imagine the model you have (as well as the games) will see a big price drop after another month or two, so I'm guessing that $270 would be only if you pre-order the Slim/Kinect bundle.

I'm not sure. I assume I can get the sexbox right away and get Kinect later. I'm going to take the games to them tomorrow. Just to ensure the price. The $270 is going to be trade-in value. I do have a friend who may buy my Elite/controller/Wireless adapter for a little more than GS will give me.

Good call on getting them traded now.  I'm sure it's just the slim 360 you'll be buying, though.  The Kinect will still cost $150 when it's released.  But even still, getting that new 360 for only $50 or however much it'll cost is pretty awesome.

I'm sure they will mostly be tech demos at the beginning, just like Wii Sports (which was still a lot of fun for a while).  But how awesome is it going to be to be able to use Minority Report controls for all of the menus?  Now I can just swipe my hand to fast-forward through episodes of "Say Yes to the Dress" on Netflix.

I'm surprised the new 360 still has a disc tray.  It sure looks pretty, though.

They can't completely copy the PS3

I think I already hate Kinect.  I really hope MS doesn't start churning out a bunch of gimmicky mini-games like Nintendo.  The games they show in the video on Xbox.com look like tech demos.  Boo.

I was just thinking about this today...  well, the next generation console coupled with a 3D HDTV...  That would be a totally surreal experience.  I think I'm just going to pay off my student loans and wait for that.  I think that would just about own my soul (even though I am currently stuck in the purgatory of old Xbox games).

I still think 3D is retarded, at least for video games.  It's mostly gimmicky, and except for maybe the Nintendo 3DS, there is absolutely no way to design a game that actually implements 3D in any way other than making images pop out. For movies, fine, they can make it look like the poop is flying off the screen.  But if you're designing a game, and want 3D to actually matter, then you have be guaranteed your entire audience has the technology, and that won't happen for a long, long time.

For me, I can just return the Xbox under the return policy since I bought my Elite last week.

For Gamestop, those prices look pretty close to what I was quoted when I called them (which was on 6/15). I think he told me $167 (with the Edge card extras on the HD and the controller). I also didn't mention the wireless adapter which would have netted me a bit more. I guess it would have jumped up to $200. Anyway, if you have a few games you wouldn't mind parting with, then you can do that. See if you can get to at least $250 or so. Reason I say that price is because that bundle they're selling with Kinect. Once you get over $250, then the difference you have to pay will be less than buying the Kinect outright.

One thing to consider is how you would buy the new xbox and still get your data onto the new one. They are saying the old data transfer cables will work, but that's useless if you trade your xbox + HD in to Gamestop, since they'll have it. I don't know if Gamestop will be offering people the chance to move all their data, but it's something to consider. I've also read that you can transfer your information to a USB drive and then move it over to the new Xbox.

Honestly, I think I won't use the Kinect that much. The video when it was released last year looks awesome, but really, I think the only time I will use it is to move around on Netflix. It will be a blast to Minority Report that shit. But, as for games, I don't think it would be that fun, nor do I think the way I have my living room set up will be conducive to it. I'll have to move my coffee table each time. Bleh.

Shit, I dunno. I suspect that it won't do anything while it's playing though. It will only respond to your voice.. But then my panting, moaning, and subsequent crying may be something of concern.

You won't actually get the Kinect with that new Xbox.  The system is just "compatible" with it, meaning you don't need a separate power adapter just for the Kinect hardware.  You'll still have to spend $150 on it when it come out in September or whenever.

What I mean is that you're paying $400 for the new Xbox and Kinect. Get the sexbox now. Get Kinect later. That saves $50, since I hear Kinect is $150.

Yea.. About that. I bought a couple hard drive transfer cables from overstock.com. I connected my hard drive to the new xbox and it would read the hard drive as an external USB device but not as another xbox hard drive. I can't transfer my stuff from my old hard drive to the new xbox yet. I'm not sure what to do at this point. I need to find someone with a blank 40-80GB external hard drive so I can transfer it from my old hard drive to there and then to the new xbox. So, in short, I couldn't really do much on it this weekend. Watched some Netflix and that's it.

That said, it is quieter. That is very true. It's not too much slimmer. Maybe a half inch at the most. The big difference is that, when standing up, it's about 2-3 inches shorter than the old one. Also, the power button and tray open button are activated by touch, as the PS3 ones are.

Crisis averted. I transferred my old data to the slim. Moral of the story: Don't buy the cheap transfer cables from Overstock.com. Buy the official shit from Microsoft. I guess the main thing I love about the Slim is how quiet it is. When running a game, you never hear the thing. And the touch buttons on the front are cool, along with the cool sounds it makes when it turns on and opens.

That's dumb.  They basically both have the same catalog except that PS3 has games like the Uncharteds and MLB The Show.  Microsoft has Halo.  So what?

They also have Gears of War. I prefer the Xbox for the controller and the way everything is structured. I like the Achievement system over the Trophy system. The PS3 can do more in regards to play BluRay movies and acts as a computer by letting you put a different OS on or use an actual internet browser. I don't think it will be long before Microsoft ventures into the latter of those two on the Xbox... However, I used my browser like 2 times on the PS3. Once to see what it could do (and by that I mean, can I get porn on my 58? and the answer was yes) and then a couple weeks ago to see if Hulu would stream on there (and it wouldn't). I have this loyalty thing that I can't kick (Xbox, Milton, Z, etc). I like my Xbox and I will continue buying games that are on both platforms for it.

I solved this problem by buying both. Most of my friends have a 360 though so that's where I buy/rent my dual platform games. I prefer the 360 though for their interface, their achievement system (what have I achieved other than becoming more and more anti-social?) and their Netflix set up. I don't have to put in a disc to watch Netflix on my Xbox. Small details but definitely appreciated.

PS3 is great for the exclusives and the blu-ray. Everyone wins.

I am thinking, however, of acquiring this new slim XBox, but it remains to be seen.

Halo?  That's seriously the best exclusive you can come up with?  I'd take one Dead Rising over all the Halos in the world.  Plus, what everyone else said.  I own both and, even with The Show and both Uncharteds, I barely touch the PS3 for gaming.

Well, I don't really play Dead Rising.  So, the PS3 works just fine for me and my baseball needs.  Since the Call of Duties are multiplatform, the PS3 and blueray are wins for me.

From what I gather, this new 360 is basically Microsoft's version of a PS3 Slim.

Except with a catalog of games that anyone would actually want to play.

That's dumb.  They basically both have the same catalog except that PS3 has games like the Uncharteds and MLB The Show.  Microsoft has Halo.  So what?

GOOD!  I DON'T WANT TO PLAY ONLINE WITH YOU, ANYHOW!

So I keep getting "Play DVD" when I pop a game in and dirty disc errors for brand new games. I guess it could be the games (the Play DVD is specific to FIFA 10) but I think my XBox is dying a slow death.

Anyone know my best bet to get a cheap one? I don't care if it's the old version. If there's a price drop coming on it because of the new one I'd like to know. I have a 120 GB hard drive so I'd probably only need the Arcade version.

If you already have the hard drive, your cheapest option is to probably get an Arcade model on ebay.  They don't come with a hard drive, but seems as though you know that already.  When my 360 broke, I snooped around ebay and saw many Arcade models selling for near $100.

I'm not going to replace it unless it's incessant. Usually it fixes with a quick restart. It's certainly not getting any better though.

Slak, you could always sell your machine on ebay or get GameStop to buy it from you and put that towards an Arcade if you really feel it'll die.  You might want to act quick though.  GameStop doesn't buy back broken 360s.  I was able to sell my console on ebay after it died.  I want to say I got north of $50 for it.

Anyone download the new update yet? I'm downloading the ESPN portion of it. I'm hoping this is pretty cool. Allow you to maybe watch more sports than you normally could. However, if it's something that's just on the channels themselves then that will be pretty boring. It's actually done downloading and I don't feel like going back. So far, the ESPN part looks pretty cool. They have a lot of on demand events: soccer (mls, euro leagues), rugby, khl, euro basketball, NCAAF, NCAA volleyball, Judo (which I'm watching now). That's just some of them. This could be kind of cool.

Netflix now has a search feature. That was the biggest thing the app was lacking. I hear zune now allows you to stream music from their marketplace with that zune pass thing they have.

The layout is a bit different. There are fewer windows on the screen and they kind of pop up when you go them. Right now, it kind of hurts my eyes but I assume thatll go away over time. Another cosmetic change is the quick menu which is a white color now. I'm not a fan of the font they have switched to but it's not that big of a deal. Update seems nice enough

I use ESPN 3 all the time on my computer so this is just awesome. Finally I can watch a meaningless friendly between Uzbekistan and the Faroe Islands on my television.

Games?  How so?  Serious question...

I've played both and the only real difference I can see is that the textures are a bit generic on PS3 games.  And that's in multiplayer.  I've noticed this in MW2, but then again that's about all I play.  The PS3 exclusive games, like The Show and Uncharted, are amazing.
