Title: The "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" Mini-Chub Thread
Post by: CubFaninHydePark on August 03, 2010, 10:31:50 PM
10 K's in 6 innings...had no clue who Thomas Diamond was before tonight.

Is this a one-hit wonder, or the start of a two-part epic, rocking, sploogefest?

I didn't know he played for the Penguins.

He was once a top prospect for the Rangers.  Yeah, that's all I got.

If I remember correctly, him, Edison Volquez and John Danks were called "DVD" or something ghey in the rangers organization.
Then Diamond had control issues, then got hurt. After TJ surgery, he struggled for a couple of years and the rangers let him go.
But at one time he was supposed to be the best of the three. He's done pretty well this year in the minors, hopefully he's finally healthy pitching like he once was.

At one point the Rangers thought Diamond would be the best of that bunch.

One of the guys who pitched for Milwaukee last night, Cameron Low, was also in the Rangers system at that time as well.

*Not really; that would be really weird if Chris Berman wanted to break into a Desipio account and post a thread about Thomas Diamond.

Diamond downgraded to part-time shining.

QuoteST. LOUIS -- Cubs pitcher Thomas Diamond was given a three-start test to keep his job in the Chicago starting rotation.
He didn't pass.

Cubs manager Lou Piniella announced Sunday that Diamond's turn in the rotation Wednesday was being handed off to Casey Coleman. Diamond struggled in all three starts he has made this season, giving up a total 12 earned runs in 13 innings. He made it through only four innings against the Cardinals on Friday and lasted only three innings against the Reds.

"We are going to make a change," Piniella said. "We are going to pitch Coleman. And Diamond will go to the bullpen and pitch long relief."

Coleman pitched two scoreless innings of relief in Diamond's last start and struck out three batters. Piniella said Friday he liked how he looked and after talking with pitching coach Larry Rothschild, decided to give Coleman a shot.

DPD.  Since Diamond is getting bumped based on 13 innings, I'd say Coleman should be quite an improvement.

Diamond: 0-3, 8.31 ERA, 13 IP, 10 BB, 13 SO, 2.077 WHIP, 11.8 H/9, 6.9 BB/9, 9.0 SO/9
Coleman: 0-0, 8.64 ERA, 8.1 IP, 5 BB, 5 SO, 1.800 WHIP, 10.8 H/9, 5.4 BB/9, 5.4 SO/9

I'm not some ultra guru on the Cubs minor league system or anything, but I like to keep up from time to time to see how the young players are doing.  I still have no idea what a Casey Coleman is and where it came from.  Why is it wearing a Cub uniform?

To be fair to those guys, though, not every farm system has rosters filled out with Strasburgs and Poseys.

Exactly. How can you people say that Jim Hendry sucks at all when the Pirates front office has driven them into the ground for 18 straight seasons? If there's someone worse than you, you must not be that bad at your job.

Because Jim Hendry and Oneri Fleita aren't some ultra gurus on the Cubs minor league system or anything either.

To be fair to those guys, though, not every farm system has rosters filled out with Strasburgs and Poseys.

So the Cubs are off the hook for their mediocre farm system because not all other farm systems are stacked?

I didn't say what I wanted to say correctly.  Every farm system has fillers or pork on their rosters, right?  I'm equating those players to the Thomas Diamonds and Casey Colemans.  Why did these two get called up is what I meant to ask.  I mean, I know Cashmoney hasn't been all that great lately, but hasn't he been starting before his callup?  Why not start him?  Is it because he's more valuable in the pen right now?  I have questions.
