Bump...

http://www.secondcityhockey.com/2011/5/19/2179924/corey-crawford-gets-a-3-year-extension

Doesn't this move signify that a new thread should start?

I defer to a real hockey fan, you know, one who has watched them all his life, and didn't come back within the last 3-4 years, and therefore knows shit about the sport.

Your move, SKO.
I got this, TEC.

I won't get excited about this team until they win the world championship.

What's a Rostislav Olesz?

Bowman must be getting ready to make a run at Pujols.

Edit: Or clearing out cap space for Sopel's dong.

Ridiculous night.

While I want to reserve judgment until July 1, I do find myself already wishing that Stan had chosen to show off his balls in some manner that didn't involve trading the one guy who refused to tolerate bullshit last year while accepting injured mediocrity in return.

Given how thin the Hawks are now looking at the blue line, could there be anything that makes this move sensible short of sending Drew Doughty a gaudy offer sheet that likely overpays him? (Granted, that would give me a boner. But that's the definition of an all-in move.)

And, aside from all but guaranteeing that Hjalmarsson's staying put (and without the partner who made him shine), does this also portend increased job security for Scott?

(And how long now before the mouth-breather chorus calling for dumping Campbell since 2008 finally get their precious Wisniewski back?)

Am I wrong?

Okay... I'll try to reserve judgment.

Those are along the lines of the rumblings I read last night, too. Right now all of those rumblings are speculation based. No one saw Stan being able to loose Campbell's talents onto South Beach. I am really agitated at the lack of blue line depth right now and worried for Hammer's future because without Soup he was horseshit.

That said, given Stan's unpredictability I think it makes the most sense to sit back and see how this plays out.

Also, you should check out this link (http://www.litterboxcats.com/2010/11/27/1802457/florida-panthers-scoring-chances-at-the-quarter-mark) on Olesz' underlying stats - some very statfhaggy analysis that may put a shine on this turd after all (assuming he can recover from his knee injury).

I suppose age plays into it too, and that perhaps avoiding the risk of getting stuck with a $7.1 million cap hit on a 35+ d-man with a history of injuries a few years from now is worth some sacrifice now.

But this blue line situation scares me shitless.

There were a bunch of teams grabbing head scratchers in the first, so not only did Mark McNeill fall to the Hawks, but they also got Brandon Saad in the second round.

Anything else they got in this draft is just gravy.

As for the Hawks' blueline, Stan and Q obviously see something in Nick Leddy that nobody else is seeing. They were talking about him taking on a "larger role" even before the Campbell trade.

Oh, and hello, Brad Richards.

I think Bowman can tell Richards "I'll give you $5 million/per to skate between Patrick Sharp and Marian Hossa and have a legit shot at a Cup or two, or you can take whatever Slats wants to pay you and you can skate between Brandon Prust and whatever's left of Marian Gaborik and have your Mays and Junes free every year."

I hope that's what they tell him. The idea of another 5 yr deal or longer makes my ass hurt.

I think you're right on with the Leddy stuff. Sounds like they're going to sign someone or a couple of someones to fill out the ass end of the defense. They're not going to ride John Scott as some people might fear.

That said, I'm seeing some ridiculous speculation about who they're going to try and sign. I'm surprised I haven't heard someone say that Stan should RIGHT THE WRONGS that are Radim Vrbata, Michael Nylander and Michal Handzus. Puke. That's probably Tab's next article.

If the bidding gets too high on Richards, Stan can just work with Q on a stopgap (move Sharp back to center) to start things off, then sit with a buttload of Cap room and nab a center off whoever spirals out of contention first.

I can't figure out where Kruger fits in on this team...All I know us, if he sticks, they should stop fucking around and give him the umlaut on his nameplate.

If the The Plan is seeing undersized centers get pancaked by NHL players, then yeah, The Plan is right on schedule.

This. Bowman said at the draft that they want Kruger to contribute at the big club next year but unless he makes a dramatic leap I don't see how it's possible. I'm praying they sign a solid two-way center along with Ryan Johnson for cheap and go with Toews, Free Agent A, Bolland, Johnson down the middle. Kruger needs to play but he won't get a ton of minutes in Chicago. Hopefully Stan's just playing coy. I don't see him relying on Kruger.

Maybe Bowman needs lessons from Jim Hendry on how to go on record stating how much guys suck before putting them on the trading block.

I like Kruger's hockey sense, but unless he puts on 20 pounds of muscle, he'll never be able to compete at this level.

I still get the feeling that this money is going to be spread around, getting some more depth guys and maybe extending Sharp's contract if he's receptive.  I'm trying to wait until the free agency stuff is done, but at this point I don't like the trade.  I love Brouwer, but he's a guy that this team should be able to replace from its farm system.  Campbell, however, has a unique skillset that the Hawks had built their offensive system around, and that's not going to be easy to replicate.  I'm not buying that Nick Leddy can step into that role.

Although these feelings may just be a reaction to hearing various meatheads call WGN and The Score this weekend to proclaim Campbell a "one-way" player and "soft".  One dope went on to declare that Brouwer was also soft.  I hope these people are disfigured in a car fire.

I agree completely. Leddy can't jump and do what Campbell does. No one can and we're going to have to deal with the fact that we lost a unique skill set to get out from having to pay a 35 year old man 7 million dollars at some point in the future. Some good, some bad. They need a good, steady veteran back there for a couple of years at least and I think they can find and acquire that player. I'm counting on it.

Brouwer wasn't soft physically - he was the leading hitter last year. I think people thought he tended to disappear with his goal scoring and going in and out of Q's doghouse didn't help either. I don't think Q loved him much. I just hope Bickell figures out that he's a huge beast of a man and not some dainty sniper like he sometimes tries to be. If Bickell slots into the Brouwer role I think the club can replace Bickell through FA.

He was set to be a UFA in 4 days. I know it's just a 7th round pick but I find it hard to believe there was going to be a bidding war for Kopecky. Not to mention the Panthers can easily afford to match the highest bidder assuming it's for one or two years. I'm a little baffled but glad the Hawks got a pick for no discernible reason. Also, now we don't have to worry about the Hawks paying Kopecky.

Dowell is a more serviceable 4th liner than Stalberg is, and it ain't like he's going to play anywhere else.

Only viewed through your Stalberg-hating glasses.  Stals is limited yes, but he at least possesses plus speed.  Dowell is most comparable to Colin Fraser, in that both are professional hockey players because for some reason people keep letting them.

Dowell was another guy Q didn't care for. He barely dressed near the end of the season. Why keep him around?

Fork, I think it's pretty obvious the Hawks and Campoli both want to continue this relationship. It's gonna hai.

Other than this, which is actual news, the meatheads and jersey chasers on Twitter are driving me fucking insane.

Only viewed through your Stalberg-hating glasses.  Stals is limited yes, but he at least possesses plus speed.  Dowell is most comparable to Colin Fraser, in that both are professional hockey players because for some reason people keep letting them.

That.

And there are only so many Ryan Smyths to go around.

Fork, I think it's pretty obvious the Hawks and Campoli both want to continue this relationship. It's gonna hai.

And, with Campbell out the door, Campoli's ability to push the play seems all the more worth keeping around short-term.

We discussed tonight Frolik & Stalberg each getting 1-year deals, to let them know they're playing for a payday. Also, considering the draft the Hawks just had, there's not much incentive to keep either guy beyond this season anyway.

Yeah, the no-OS on Dowell is a solid financial move - his father is pretty ill, so chances are he'll want to stay near home. Cynical? Sure. But that's life in the big leagues.

3 years 4 years and $12MM for Tomas Kopecky.  If you ever wanted anything from Dale Tallon, now's the time to ask, because he's high or dyin' or something.

Good numbers last year, decent shot-blocker.  His cap hit last season was 1.5MM, so a raise to 2MM or 2.5MM wouldn't be half bad.

The best way I've seen it put is that he's a younger, healthier Sopel. Meaning he's still got a lot to learn and can be taught. Hopefully they can get him signed - I don't see how it would be an issue. Getting traded to the Hawks these days is the NHL version of hitting the jackpot.

Done, 4 years, $2.75MM/per. He won't replace Campbell's offense, but the Hawks are going to be a bitch to score on this year.

Cam Barker bought out by Wild, signed by Oil for 1 year/$2.25MM.

http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/playerbreakingnews.asp?sport=NHL&id=1822&line=137176&spln=1

QuoteMinnesota GM Chuck Fletcher is taking responsibility for the Cam Barker trade in 2010 in which they gave up prospect Nick Leddy to Chicago.

Leddy is looking good in Chicago while Barker had only five points and a minus-10 rating in 52 games in his native Minnesota last season. "Cam worked real hard for us. He was a true professional," Fletcher said. "When we acquired him, he was a player we felt would fit into our short- and long-term plans. He was already an established player in the league that had some success. But it didn't work out the way we anticipated and/or he had hoped. When you look back at things a couple years later, things seem crystal-clear. I'm the general manager, and ultimately I'm the guy who makes the trades and drafts the players. I certainly take full responsibility for any decision we ever make here." Barker was placed on waivers Thursday and will be bought out of his contract Friday once he passes through waivers. An NHL team will take a chance on Barker as he was the third player drafted in 2004, after Alex Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin.

I think we can assume that McDonough McCub ordered him to do this deal.

300 Level'd

I dare anyone to read a post by Stewart that doesn't have at least five glaring grammatical errors. What a dipshit.

That said, today is a glorious today to not have handed out a multi-year contract. Not to mention our defensemen all now have wonderful contracts.

All of the today or just yesterday of it?

"Today is a glorious today" has staying power.

Agreed.

So, first I said - yeah. That's right. We'll say Today is a glorious Today for years and people will look back and wonder where it came from like when Dolan writes Seattke every single time and while lost deep in this wonderful future I looked up and slightly to the left and noticed your avatar and the caption beneath it and cackled like a regular Knox Harrington.

Good times.

A today with a cleft asshole?

Eh, even with the Carcillo, I like what Stan's done so far.  The contracts are all short-term at manageable salaries.  Based on what's happening in free agency, I have to believe several of these guys bought into the idea of taking a discount for a Cup run in Chicago, which is a great sign for how the organ-I-zation is perceived throughout the league.

My manlove for the Andrew Brunette signing is unhealthy.

On the other hand, CT will be heartbroken to hear Garnett Exelby has signed a two-way deal with Detroit.

I would be, but I'm still trying to process the fact that the Rangers gave 9 years and $60MM to a guy who is basically Craig Janney.

After the deals Edmonton gave Barker & Eager, and all that gorgeous scratch in FLA, and that's the one that's hard to process?

Seriously, I would have loved Richards for 5-6 years, but now I'm hoping the Rangers' cap fallout results in Brandon Dubinsky wearing an Indian head.

Well, Florida had to spend their way to the salary floor, and Edmonton is a fucking cow town that nobody but Ryan Smythe wants to live in.  I know there's a lot of man-love for Brad Richards on these here internets, but I see him as more of a "final piece of the puzzle" than a cornerstone player.

Sean's been doing that for a while. Not nearly as surprising as him appearing on a TV talk panel on concussions with Ken Dryden.

DPD.

Michael Frolik in for 3 years, $7 million.

Sami Lepisto signed a one-year deal as well, terms not yet disclosed.

Reports are that Chris Campoli wants 3 mildo. Hawks might just let him walk after arbitration.

We should also note for the record Stalberg's re-signing a few days ago at $1.75MM/2 years, which seems like a nice number.

Meanwhile, in Nashville... (http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_daddy/post/Predators-8217-Shea-Weber-wins-massive-7-5-mi?urn=nhl-wp10129)

QuoteShea Weber won his arbitration case against the Nashville Predators, and won it big: He was awarded a $7.5-million, 1-year contract that is the largest-ever arbitration award in the NHL.

According to CBC Sports: "The previous record for an arbitrator's award is $7 million, to John LeClair of Philadelphia in 2000 and Scott Niedermayer of New Jersey in 2004."

The contract gives him the highest cap hit for a defenseman in the NHL and make him the fifth-highest paid defenseman in base salary. (Tim Wharnsby of CBC Sports was first with the figure.) The salary increases the Predators' payroll to $48.7 million according to Cap Geek. The NHL salary cap floor is $48.3 million.

...

On The Forecheck had a rundown of some NHL players that fell into that category — Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook of the Chicago Blackhawks, as well as Dion Phaneuf of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Weber's salary is right in the middle of Keith's ($8 million in 2011-12) and Seabrook's ($7 million).

QuoteA physical hockey player gets caught, intoxicated and bloated, doing something illegal. More than that, his actions were dangerous and self-destructive and put those around him at risk.

You see, being an immovable object in front of Roberto Luongo is the same thing as getting your brain punched in by the likes of Stu Grimson and Georges Laraque, and drinking beer on a boat in the summer is the same thing as self-medicating alone in your apartment with unholy amounts of Oxycontin and Percocet.

Originally selected by the Islanders in the third round (No. 66) of the 2008 Entry Draft, Toews spent two seasons at the University of North Dakota, notching nine goals and 17 assists in 55 games with the Fighting Sioux from 2008-10 before playing with Brandon.

I haven't been this excited since Tampa got Brent Gretzky.

I've got an extra ticket for tonight's game against the Caps. For what it's worth, most of the regulars on both teams will be skating.

I understand that having fourth liners who will start shit and drop the gloves isn't as bad as having say, Matt Murton in left or Craig Steltz at SS. Or something.

This last draft the Hawks had is ridiculous. We obviously can't judge the true success of it for a good 5-6 years but it doesn't get much better than that draft. This organization is stocked. Which also bodes well for the trade deadline should the Hawks be in a position to do serious damage in the spring (which they will).

As great as Saad has looked in camp, the best player they got out of this draft was Mark McNeill, who is spending the season as Captain in Prince Albert. But, yeah, they got at least 4 future core players in one shot.

Perhaps O'Donnell's all-out effort to slowly glide back in the general direction the free man on the 2-on-1 leading Carolina's third goal here will be enough to finally get him scratched for Lepisto.

Yeah, well, that wasn't O'Donnell waiving his stick helplessly as some random member of the Sutter family scored on a breakaway, was it?  I agree the old man needs to be rested, but this is hardly a Matt Walker situation.  Walker was a bum who Quenneville became enamored with and then gave big minutes to as Brian Campbell's anchor.  O'Donnell is a 40 year old vet playing 3rd pair and killing penalties for the 3rd ranked PK in the league.

So much better than at this point last season, when they kept tripping over their dicks and barfing away points.  Thank gord.

I was still meh on them after the Calgary game. The two bad losses to Vancouver and St. Louis were a low point.

To be honest, I still can't believe we're looking at the best team (points wise) in the NHL. The schedule is going to stiffen up at some point and handling the puck they way they do in their own zone won't. I feel like a regular Fro Dog. Who bitches about a team with the best record in the league?

Last night was great but the first 30 minutes were trash and Crawford bailed the Hawks out time and time again last night. He was excellent. Recognizing that he IS a part of the team and therefore his excellent play shouldn't be ruled as an exception to victory is something I may need to work on. That said the D needs to tighten up - missing Seabrook didn't help. Keith was excellent last night. Leddy had some boo boos.

Steve Montador? This guy wants to hug you. What a great pick up he was. If he's ever played a better stretch of hockey in his career I'd be shocked.

Which leaves no space in my pants.

This is a win the Hawks can be really proud of. Great 3rd period effort and they never gave up against a real powerhouse Islander team. Sleep well, guys. You earned those 2 points.

Seems to me the new NHL alignment scheme will probably spell an end to the Hawks-Canucks rivalry...

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=382065

QuoteThe NHL's Board of Governors has made a decision on a plan for NHL realignment.

The league has approved a four conference format, subject to NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman considering time frame implementation. Bettman will also speak to the NHLPA before implementing the changes.

...

The plan, finalized on Monday would see four separate conferences established to replace the current two-conference, six division system.

The proposed new conferences would be arranged to accommodate both geographical proximity as well as established rivalries.

The existing Northeast division would be expanded to include the league's two Florida-based teams, making a conference of: Boston, Buffalo, Florida, Montreal, Ottawa, Tampa Bay and Toronto.

Meanwhile, the existing Atlantic Division would gain two teams for a seven-team conference including: Carolina, New Jersey, the New York Islanders, New York Rangers, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Washington.

The Central Division would be modified to form a conference of Mid-Western teams including: Chicago, Columbus, Dallas, Detroit, Minnesota, Nashville, St. Louis, and Winnipeg.

The three Canadian teams from the Northwest Division would join a proposed Western Conference including: Anaheim, Calgary, Colorado, Edmonton, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Jose and Vancouver.

...

The realignment is aimed at evening out the travel schedules for all NHL teams with each team playing teams outside their conference twice per year, once at home and on the road.

...

In the seven-team Conferences, teams would play six times -- three home, three away. In the eight-team Conferences, a bit more manoeuvering would be required.

Teams in the conferences of eight would play either five or six times per season on a rotating basis; three teams would play each other six times and four teams would play each other five times. This process would reverse each season.

The top four teams in each Conference would qualify for the playoffs. The first-place team would play the fourth-place team; the second-place team would play the third-place team. The four respective Conference champions would meet in the third round of the Playoffs, with the survivors playing for the Stanley Cup.

It also seems like a recipe for the contraction of Phoenix and Columbus. And moves north by both the Panthers and the Lightning.

WTF, traffic pole? (http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2012/02/23/toews-hits-pole-in-loop-leaves-in-ambulance/)

QuoteBlackhawks captain Jonathan Toews was involved in a car accident in the loop Thursday morning and according to two eyewitnesses, he left in an ambulance.

Toews' black AMG Mercedes Benz struck an "L" support beam at the intersection of Lake and Garvey in the loop just before 10 a.m. 670 The Score confirmed the vehicle is registered to the Blackhawks center and witnesses said he was driving the car.

The Blackhawks later confirmed the accident.

"Jonathan Toews was in a minor one-car collision in downtown Chicago this morning while driving himself to the United Center. He was not injured," the team said in a statement.

"I saw his car in the pole," Theron Banks, an employee at Steak Express said. "I came out. People were everywhere. Toews was in the ambulance. People were videotaping and taking pictures and trying to get autographs, but police said they couldn't get autographs."

Banks said Toews was alone and left in the ambulance. The Blackhawks deny that he left in an ambulance, but a security guard who did not want to provide his name, also said Toews left in the ambulance.

The Blackhawks' captain will miss his second game in a row Thursday night with an upper body injury. 670 The Score learned Wednesday that the injury is a concussion.

I love the autograph angle of this story.

"Hey, that guy was just is in accident!"

"Is he okay?"

"I don't know, but I think it Jonathan Toews."

"Oh, we should get his autograph!!"

I'm not worried about the money so much as about Q trying to shoe-horn Car-bomb into the top 6 for the next two seasons.

Maybe Q just wants someone to shoot that damn puck during a power play. The current guys didn't seem to want to do that last night.

Thrill, I would have thought by now that you would know that Chuck doesn't abide by your records of what he actually says.

He recites what you said he said, but then claims to have never said that, or changes the original meaning of what he first said to mean something entirely different.

The last two jinxes I've thrown out on Twitter have worked out in our favor. I'm not going to overuse this power but I'll keep it in my sleeve next time we need it.

Also, meatballishness aside the Hawks absolutely answered the bell that the Blues rang in the first. The Blues came in, took a commanding lead and knocked the snot out of every man in red they could see. After the first the tide turned almost completely around punctuated by Kane on Backes in the biggest upset since 1980.

Two of the best points you'll see this season.

Three games for Shaw. I guess that's what happens when you hit the goalie from the NHL's own team.
