Title: The Blues
Post by: Quality Start Machine on August 11, 2011, 08:26:30 AM

After learning yesterday that one of our own just discovered Slim Harpo, it's apparent that we've been delinquent in this area.

To that end, for novice bluesmen, start with:

Any Chess artist
Blind Willie McTell and Robert Johnson, for the roots.
T-Bone Walker, and his musical sons, Albert Collins & Johnny Copeland
The Three Kings (Freddie, Albert, B.B.)
Elmore James
Johnny Winter

Any other good starting points, add here.

Leadbelly
Billie Holliday
Peter Green
Gary Moore

Any questions?

Clapton is the most boring guitarist alive, but his crossroads festival has some incredible blues going on.
Not sure if he's having it again, but if he is, go. It's that good.

The DVDs have a lot of legends on it.

I get it, it's Clapton - but nothing in the world could make me listen to that asshole's music on purpose.

Chicago reader is doing their own version of Groupon (http://realdeal.chicagoreader.com/) apparently.  Yesterday, the deal was $25 to spend at Rosa's for $12.  Fuck yeah.

Flannj, we're a bunch of white guys, mostly from middle class families. Ruining the blues is in our DNA.

Gary Clark Jr. is the real deal, for anyone interested in blues music. Long a favorite of Oleg.
Palladia has been showing a concert in Alabama, his song "Bright Lights" is unreal live.

It's a 2 part show, they have him play 1 song on each.. the first part is far better. Flaming lips also on the bill, as well as alabama shakes, who are good.

I have only heard the first minute of Gary Clark Jr's new album, The Story of Sonny Boy Slim.  If you like the blues, I'm guessing this will be awesome.

Pretty sure the term "tranny" was first across the line in that contest.

Yeah, but I wanted to also get in a dig on the fact that Eric Clapton is a horribly racist man.

To be fair, you can pretty much slip any adjective into the spot currently occupied by "racist" and it would apply.
