QuoteRick Perry compared the GOP's efforts to defeat President Obama "to one of the deadliest battles of the D-Day landings in Normandy in 1944," NBC News reports.

Said Perry: "This election is about stopping a president of the United States and his administration that is abusing the Constitution of this country, that is putting America on a track to bankruptcy. It is a powerful moment in Americans' history, and you are on the front lines. This is Concord. This is Omaha Beach. This is going up the hill realizing that the battle is worth winning."

Rick Perry is an idiot.

Every time I read something like that I feel like abusing the constitution until it allows for Obama to get a third term with an option for a fourth.

Obama doesn't even need to campaign. Just let these people continue running against each other.

In fact it's better if he doesn't. My point isn't that he's awesome. It's just that the others scare me so very, very much. And that includes the rest of the turds in the pew next to you.

Paul in third, Newt with a respectable fourth. Rick Perry and Michelle Bachmann did some things and some people knew who Jon Huntsman was.

Santorum is mixing it up with Mitt, getting a little messy.  If Mitt doesn't win this tonight, that has to be a blow going into New Hampshire.  Maybe that hurts the inevitability argument for Romney.

I'm interested how long Perry and Bachmann stick around from here out.  Newt will fight until Florida, I'd imagine.

This will probably be the only time in my life I quote from a Rolling Stone story, but this basically sums up my belief that a possible Obama-Romney race would be a choice between Shitty and Slightly Less Shitty...

"Most likely, it'll be Mitt Romney versus Barack Obama, meaning the voters' choices in the midst of a massive global economic crisis brought on in large part by corruption in the financial services industry will be a private equity parasite who has been a lifelong champion of the Gordon Gekko Greed-is-Good ethos (Romney), versus a paper progressive who in 2008 took, by himself, more money from Wall Street than any two previous presidential candidates, and in the four years since has showered Wall Street with bailouts while failing to push even one successful corruption prosecution (Obama)."

Fox just reported that a guy driving a truck has the results out of Story County, the largest county still outstanding, and is driving the results to the secret vote-counting center. Seriously, the Republican nomination for President of the United States is, at least for a moment, controlled by a guy driving a truck out of Story County, Iowa.

Wow.

Wow.

This is the difference between like 7 non-committed delegates and 6 non-committed delegates.

The race is close enough where it really won't matter for the future of the campaign.

And then Santorum waits until after midnight on the east coast to speak to his supporters.  So, now, his remarks won't make it into the morning papers.  Smooth move.

Also, Al Sharpton just called Santorum the "flavor of the month."

Apparently the truck story wasn't true, but the Iowa GOP apparently doesn't know where some of the outstanding votes are. I would love to stay up longer, but I can't. Hopefully we can all get back to Iowa not mattering tomorrow.

I have to attend one of their weddings this spring. T'was a girl who was a pre-law student. Bright kid. Then she became disillusioned after she broke up with her boyfriend of five years and got sucked in by "bible-believing christians" who have now convinced her that she can save herself from her past wickedness by obeying her husband (they're engaged but have never dated, because only "courtship" is acceptable Christian dating) and have actually told her she can get salvation by bearing children. But she's the fiancee's ex-roommate so apparently I'm obligated to go. Can't wait to deal with the non-alcoholic, non-dancing, non-Cyndi Lauper reception.

In short, yeah, fuck those guys.

She offered me two sites, but they didn't know either.  Can anyone out do Siri?

In all seriousness, and speaking as an outsider, one of the things that fascinates me about America is that more of you don't feel like this.  Most of you on here (with one or two notable exceptions) are intelligent, educated, thoughtful chaps, and yet you're surrounded - and massively outnumbered - by dribbling fucking idiots.  Does it not freak you out, even just a bit?

Then she became disillusioned after she broke up with her boyfriend of five years and got sucked in by "bible-believing christians" who have now convinced her that she can save herself from her past wickedness by obeying her husband (they're engaged but have never dated, because only "courtship" is acceptable Christian dating) and have actually told her she can get salvation by bearing children. But she's the fiancee's ex-roommate so apparently I'm obligated to go. Can't wait to deal with the non-alcoholic, non-dancing, non-Cyndi Lauper reception.

In short, yeah, fuck those guys.

I was going to say something about liking the 14th century viewpoints too, but then I figured that even 14th century Europeans probably did more drinking, fucking, and carousing than most.

So, yeah, fuck them.

My boss told me that back in the colonial times here, people didn't get married until there was knowledge of the ability for that couple to produce a child. I have not seen any documentation to back that up, but it definitely supports that notion of no fucking til marriage

After some googling, it appears that these didn't go unpunished all the time

In all seriousness, and speaking as an outsider, one of the things that fascinates me about America is that more of you don't feel like this.  Most of you on here (with one or two notable exceptions) are intelligent, educated, thoughtful chaps, and yet you're surrounded - and massively outnumbered - by dribbling fucking idiots.  Does it not freak you out, even just a bit?

A lot. Every day.

And so if I was able to secure a job in Norway we could end up living there. You know, where people get treated well and aren't assumed to be mouthbreathing cretins that hope Jesus Christ shows up in their breakfast gravy.

Seriously, the Republican nomination for President of the United States is, at least for a moment, controlled by a guy driving a truck out of Story County, Iowa.

Wow.

This is the difference between like 7 non-committed delegates and 6 non-committed delegates.

The race is close enough where it really won't matter for the future of the campaign.

Serious question: wouldn't it be wise of Romney to just come out and say, "Yeah, I'm really wealthy. When I said a 'little' of my income comes from public speaking and it turned out to be 374k, I meant it was a little to me since I'm worth WAY MORE than that. I'm not going to pretend like I'm a person that makes 50k a year. If I was, I wouldn't be able to run for President. So let's just get that out of the way."

Is Romney pretending not to be very wealthy? I missed the speech where he said he was just an average guy of humble means.

Yeah, but he's not even trying the GWB model of "millionaire you can have a beer with".

No, I don't think he is - but on the news they were making a big stink about his tax returns and people were quick to act horrified that he referred to 347k as a small amount of money.

I just think a lot of the media generated controversies can easily be squashed by the candidate himself - but I'm also guessing most of America isn't ready to handle that sort of bluntness.

DAMN YOU, COHEN.

The man's a veritable font of butchered metaphor, strained pop culture allusions and bizarre asides:

Quotea virtual Michelin Man of grandiosity, pneumatically overstuffed with self-references and appeals to the political gutter

QuoteHis mind is always in the tumble cycle.

QuoteWho dat, Newt?

QuoteRestless minds sometimes go haywire.

Quoteto blow up a cacophonous tax code (what an awful noise it makes!)

QuoteHe's an unscrupulous man, a one-car demolition derby

That he thinks merely mentioning the name "Saul Alinksy" (Who dat, Newt?) somehow marks Gingrich as a more careful student of history than your average MikeC parroting that day's birther column from World Net Daily (http://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Awnd.com+alinsky&hl=en), is just obliviousness frosting on Cohen's pneumatically overstuffed cake.

This column's version of "It's alright with me if Roman Polanski is freed... —if first I get a chance to bust him one in the mouth" is weaker sauce, but it still betrays that trademark Cohen touch:

QuoteOf course, if Gingrich becomes the Republican nominee, it's incumbent upon him to lose... Take a bow, Newt. Then take a powder too.

Why do I picture both Newt and the Donald rolling out in blue leisure suits for the announcement?

I was thinking they'd come out with newer, younger, trophy wives.

A blow to Romney's campaign.

I finally understand the architecture of his combover.  He combs it from the left side of his head to the right side.  Then he combs it from the back to the front and pastes it down in front.  Very clever.  Bizarre.  But clever.

O, sweet metaphor... (http://2012.talkingpointsmemo.com/2012/02/newt-im-not-going-anywhere-mitt.php)

Quote"Unlike Governor Romney, I care very deeply about helping the poorest Americans," he said. "I believe that the Declaration of Independence's commitment that our creator endowed us with the right to pursue happiness extends to the poorest Americans and I think one of the great challenges of conservatism is to turn the safety net into a trampoline."

I imagine Gingrich sitting on his campaign bus and beaming with pride after writing out that sentence.

"You've done it again, Newton!"

Holy Wars... The Punishment Due (http://www.politico.com/blogs/click/2012/02/megadeth-frontman-backs-rick-santorum-114539.html):

QuoteDave Mustaine, leader of the heavy metal band Megadeth, is ready to rock out for Rick Santorum.

"Earlier in the election, I was completely oblivious as to who Rick Santorum was, but when the dude went home to be with his daughter when she was sick, that was very commendable," Mustaine recently told MusicRadar.com.  "... You know, I think Santorum has some presidential qualities, and I'm hoping that if it does come down to it, we'll see a Republican in the White House... and that it's Rick Santorum."

Gilling the comments...

As much shit as I give them, I have to admit that the GOP primary probably wouldn't appear to be nearly as big of a clusterfuck trainwreck as it now does without an assist from the media's need for instant big picture analysis at every single turn.

Had Santorum won Michigan tonight, I'm sure we would have heard all about how everything was going from bad to worse for Mitt.

"Romney needed to win both states, but especially Michigan..." (http://www.cnn.com/2012/02/28/election/2012/primaries/index.html)

But Romney won. And, in the end, those 3-4 extra delegates will have made all the difference...

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-fix/post/mitt-romney-in-michigan-arizona-just-win-baby/2012/02/28/gIQA5vYFhR_blog.html

QuoteIn politics, winning isn't everything, it's the only thing. The score sheet only shows "W's" and "L's"...

...

But, winning is winning. And when Romney needed to win — a loss in Michigan would have crippled his campaign beyond repair (or close to it) — he did.

...

Romney's victories on Tuesday night aren't determinative. The fight for the Republican nomination will go on. But, the alternative would have either ended his campaign or forced a top-to-bottom overhaul as he sought to show that he knew change was needed.

When we look back in the history books, all it will say is that Romney won Michigan and Arizona. And that's the best he and his team could have hoped for Tuesday night.

All he does is win.

Holy shit, Chris Cillizza. How does it feel to be the Skip Bayless of politics?

Final result?  A 15-15 tie in delegates: http://www.cnn.com/election/2012/primaries/state/mi

EDIT: http://www.freep.com/article/20120301/NEWS15/120301038/Mitt-Romney-gets-Michigan-s-large-delegates

Final score: 16-14 Romney to Santorum.

I think the GOP ennui is starting to set in.

Quote"When you have a candidate few people really like, whose support is a mile wide and an inch deep, whose raison d'etre (a 4am fancy word) is fixing an economy that is fixing itself without him, and who only wins his actual, factual home state by three percentage points against a guy no one took seriously only two months ago, there really is little reason for independent voters in the general election to choose him if the economy keeps improving.

Seriously, putting it bluntly, conservatives may not like Barack Obama, but most other people do. And when faced with a guy you like and a guy you don't like who says he can fix an economy that no longer needs fixing, you're going to go with the guy you like."

Why the hate? I mean, sure, Kucinich is a joke. He's a walking 30 Rock punchline who once saw a UFO with Shirley MacLaine. But "good fucking riddance" seems weirdly vehement for that ineffectual, elfin Don Quixote.

Is there some research lurking in your database suggesting that Kucinich wasn't really in Congress to serve?

Or are you just trying to burnish your pox-on-both-houses centrist street cred for some sort of sensible-moderation-off against Huey and Gil?

Some agree with George Henderson's dovish stance on the Harry issue; others say Jacque Lefleur's hawkish position made more sense. Chuck takes the middle ground on this one - we should simultaneously emphathize with Harry's plight and get tough on him.

Here is what I believe to be a comprehensive list of Kucinich-sponsored legislation that has gone on to become law to date:

Another bill, H.R. 2707: To reauthorize the Underground Railroad Educational and Cultural Program, passed the House during the 110th Congress but was never voted on in the Senate.

An additional three non-binding resolutions of his have been put to a vote in the House and failed:

Beyond the above, it's almost all (http://www.govtrack.us/congress/person.xpd?id=400227) anti-war, anti-genetically-modified-food, anti-death-penalty and pro-universal-prekindergarten windmill tilting that never even came up for votes.

Oh, and he tried to impeach Dick Cheney.

Here is what I believe to be a comprehensive list of Kucinich-sponsored legislation that has gone on to become law to date:

  • H. J. Res. 26: Proclaiming Casimir Pulaski to be an honorary citizen of the United States posthumously (111th Congress)
  • H.R. 5390: To designate the facility of the United States Postal Service located at 13301 Smith Road in Cleveland, Ohio, as the "David John Donafee Post Office Building" (111th Congress)
  • H.R. 6150: To designate the facility of the United States Postal Service located at 14500 Lorain Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio, as the "John P. Gallagher Post Office Building" (110th Congress)
  • H.R. 4083: To make available to the Ukrainian Museum and Archives the USIA television program "Window on America" (105th Congress)

Another bill, H.R. 2707: To reauthorize the Underground Railroad Educational and Cultural Program, passed the House during the 110th Congress but was never voted on in the Senate.

An additional three non-binding resolutions of his have been put to a vote in the House and failed:

  • H. Con. Res. 51: Directing the President, pursuant to section 5(c) of the War Powers Resolution, to remove the United States Armed Forces from Libya (112th Congress)
  • H. Con. Res. 28: Directing the President, pursuant to section 5(c) of the War Powers Resolution, to remove the United States Armed Forces from Afghanistan (112th Congress)
  • H. Con. Res. 248: Directing the President, pursuant to section 5(c) of the War Powers Resolution, to remove the United States Armed Forces from Afghanistan (111th Congress)

Beyond the above, it's almost all (http://www.govtrack.us/congress/person.xpd?id=400227) anti-war, anti-genetically-modified-food, anti-death-penalty and pro-universal-prekindergarten windmill tilting that never came up for votes.

Oh, and he tried to impeach Dick Cheney.

Truly a sordid legacy. GOOD FUCKING RIDDANCE.

How the hell did you research all that so fast with his tiny, elven dong between your teeth?

Thrillho : Dennis Kucinich :: Apex : LeBron James

Did I do that right?

Cleveland now hates them both?

There's an excellent case to be made against corn holders, at least in terms of application in holding corn.

Are you unable to hold an ear of corn? They do have one holder built in, you know. Anyway, mine are double-tined and difficult to clean. Unlike these:

Yes, clearly. Although I imagine that if one thinks they're necessary in the first place, this could just confirm the idea: "Imagine what it would be like without these tools!" The corn would probably be shooting out of people's hands and poking out eyes.

I guess if the corn wasn't really hot you could go without holders, but at that point you may as well just eat it out of a can.

Put me in the "holders, double-tined" camp.

This Romney speech seems to be targeted at a mean audience IQ of about 80.

It lacked zazz. When I'm listening to a man I want to prey upon my insecurities in order to consolidate and cling desperately to power, I want to be entertained. Needs more college hoop.

55 (9th Grade), or 59 (11th grade).  At least, that's what I got using Google's Intertubes to find the speech and two readability index calculators.

The further Gingrich's dwindling campaign budget dries up, the more he'll be forced to scorch the earth with even crazier stark raving lunacy to get any attention at all...

http://nationaljournal.com/2012-presidential-campaign/gingrich-calls-obama-comments-on-trayvon-martin-shooting-disgraceful--20120323

QuoteRepublican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich harshly criticized President Obama for commenting on Trayvon Martin's race as he extended condolences to the 17-year-old shooting victim's parents on Friday. Obama said, "If I had a son, he would look like Trayvon," a remark that Gingrich said he found "disgraceful" and "appalling."

"What the president said, in a sense, is disgraceful," Gingrich said on Sean Hannity's radio show. "It's not a question of who that young man looked like. Any young American of any ethnic background should be safe, period. We should all be horrified no matter what the ethnic background.

"Is the president suggesting that if it had been a white who had been shot, that would be OK because it didn't look like him? That's just nonsense dividing this country up. It is a tragedy this young man was shot. It would have been a tragedy if he had been Puerto Rican or Cuban,  or if he had been white, or if he had been Asian-American, or if he'd been a Native American. At some point, we ought to talk about being Americans. When things go wrong to an American, it is sad for all Americans. Trying to turn it into a racial issue is fundamentally wrong. I really find it appalling."

Yes, Newt. I believe that's a fair reading.

Que TEC...

http://www.policymic.com/articles/9163/ron-paul-delegates-arrested-as-they-win-a-majority-at-louisiana-gop-convention

Quote"I'm handicapped! I need a doctor!" "Sir, this is the chairman!" The Louisiana State Republican Convention descended into chaos Saturday morning, with several delegates being arrested and the convention chairman being thrown to the ground by police. Sources report that state party officials panicked when it became clear that Ron Paul delegates commanded a decisive majority of the delegates on the floor – at least 111 of 180 (62%).

The convention began peacefully with a prayer and invocation. Roger Villere, Chairman of the Louisiana Republican Party, then attempted to recognize the former Chair of the Convention's Rules Committee who had been ousted from his position last night. When Alex Helwig, the newly elected Rules Committee chair, rose to address the delegation, Mr. Villere ordered him removed from the floor. Video footage shows Shreveport police dragging Mr. Helwig out of the room despite his protests that he was a duly elected delegate.

At this point, a motion was made to elect a new convention chairman. Henry Herford, Jr., was elected by an overwhelming majority. Nevertheless, Mr. Villere – who had appointed himself the convention chairman – refused to relinquish control of the gathering. As the delegates began turning their chairs around, Mr. Herford, the newly elected chairman, rose to call the convention to order. Sources report that, in an act of desperation, Mr. Villere and state party officials then ordered police to attack Mr. Herford.

Video footage shows an older gentleman in a blue shirt being violently dragged away by police and then shoved to the ground. When Mr. Herford protests that he is handicapped and would like to press charges for assault against the police officers, a Shreveport police officer is seen smirking in response. Sources report that Mr. Herford, 57, has a prosthetic hip that was dislocated during the assault.

Many observers expressed shock that the establishment would resort to such violent tactics against fellow Republicans. Saturday morning's incidents come on the heels of increasing panic among state party leaders in the aftermath of Ron Paul's decisive victory in the Louisiana caucuses in April.

For context (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louisiana_Republican_primary_and_caucuses,_2012), Paul won 6% of the vote in the March 24 LA primary, which awards 20 of the state's RNC delegates.

The "decisive victory" was in taking 111 out of 150 of the state caucus delegates during district caucuses, which delegates go on to select the state's 26 remaining RNC delegates at the state convention (where the above transpired).

QuoteAfter Convention Chairman Henry Herford's arrest, the delegates proceeded to elect a new chair and continued with the business of the convention. They reportedly elected a slate of 27 Ron Paul supporters to fill 12 of the 18 district delegate slots and 15 of 20 at-large delegate slots, before certifying the results with the RNC.

Meanwhile, state party leaders held their own convention in one corner of the room with about 30 delegates in attendance. Local media is reporting that the minority convention also elected a slate of delegates, although it is unlikely that the legitimacy of their slate will be recognized by the RNC.
