Title: Breakfast
Post by: Chuck on March 21, 2005, 09:23:39 AM
Gimme the apple pancake at Walker Brothers with a Just Picked Omelet (omelet slathered with hot apple slices) over at Mitchell's on Racine.

Then, give me a sesame bagel with belly lox smothered in chive cream cheese from Essa Bagel at 51st and 3rd in NYC.

And the wheat pancakes at any of the Egg Harbor's in the Chicago area are keepers.

I'm pretty into my protein shakes right now.  That and waffles.

Protein shake = fat free yogurt, milk, whey protein, and lots of frozen fruit.

I had breakfast at McD's for the first time the other day, and you have to try the new Sausage McGriddles.  That was pretty damn good.

Your FIRST McD's breakfast?

Two problems I have with this:

1) You hail from Florida.  Are you NEW to this country?
2) You hail from Florida.  What the hell's wrong with SONIC's breakfast, that you had to go to McD's?

I have been in America for 9 years.  And there are no Sonic's near where I live.  The only breakfast place I go to is Danny's after some late night drinking.  But you have to try the McGriddles.  Pretty good stuff.

I do not beleive there are any Sonics in Chicago either.

(other suggestions for B'fast)

Ham and Swiss omlette at Lou Mitchells downtown
A skillet at the S&G on Lincoln
Salami and eggs at the Bagel
Biscuits and Gray at the Harmony Grill (in Schubas)

Indulge me for a moment...

Every Sunday morning, my dad and I would go for biscuits & gravy at this place called Coffee Sam's, on the corner of Argyle & Kenmore.

We'd sit there, and all the good ol' boys would come in, all dinged up from the previous night's barroom activities. Each guy would walk in, the cook would ask how they did, and they would each answer, "Gave better'n I got."

Those father/son times can never be replaced...

The Monitor Skillet at the Lincoln Restaurant, near Lincoln, Irving and Damen....

AND

...the eggs benedict at Ann Sathers on Belmont.  You can have it either with toast or their world-famous cinammon rolls.  If you opt for the toast, you're a dope.

I had an ex that was addicted to those rolls.  She was also addicted to other things, part of the reason she's an ex.

We always hit the Clarkes on Lincoln right next to the Biograph.

For deli in Lincoln Park, the best was always Frances' on Clark between Deming and Wrightwood.  Good pancakes, too.  Not sure if it's still open.  Anyone?

Just had to chime in on this:

Friday I went to an Ann Sather's, and had the French Toast Fantasy:

They take a few of their cinnamon rolls, slice them and toast them up, and stuff them with mascarpone cheese, then top it with powdered sugar, honey-glazed granola, blueberries and strawberries, and topped it all off with whipped cream.

All was good until the second bite, when I started coming prematurely and uncontrollably all down my pantlegs, my shoes got all wet, and everyone was freaked out about the faces I was making

McGriddles aren't that bad.

"Yolk" on Michigan, just north of Roosevelt, has bacon waffles, which is one of the best breakfast foods of all time.  But the best place in the city is Salt & Pepper on Lincoln/Wrightwood/Sheffield.  It may be located in Douche Central, but the food is good and the waitresses (there are 3 that have been there for at least the year and a half I've been going) are all awesome.

I ate at that Yolk (there's another on Wells, just south of Chicago)  the morning after the Cubs Convention /Desipio Confab in 2007 when Len first met us for a few beers.  We got plowed, took the Red Line all the way to Howard, crashed for five hours, came back down on 5 hours sleep still drunk and Yolk was like the greatest thing ever at that moment so THIS.

It saddens me that this thread has fallen by the wayside.  Over the past 8 months or so, I have a new appreciation for breaking my overnight fast each day.

Some of my favorites:

Greek sausage omelet at Lou Mitchell's.
Jambalaya omelet at Wishbone.
Skirt steak and eggs at S&G (Hawk knows what's up).

What else is out there?

How is it that this thread was never Ratto'd? A review of the posts on page 1 was quite sad to see who we've lost.

Also, avoid Max & Benny's these days for breakfast.  Eggs are quite bland. Eggshell Cafe on Lake Cook is far better.

Recently had brunch at nana's.  Rediculously good biscuits and gravy.  Also chorizo eggs benedict.

The brunch at Jane's was great as well.  So was the brunch at Francessca's on North/Milwaukee/Damen.

Guess I've been on a brunch kick the last couple of months.

Kanela Breakfast Club at Clark and Belmont (old Orange site) has been added to the local S+G and Harmony rotation (if we get into the playoffs, we could win the whole thing).  The chocolate covered bacon waffle gets the attention, but everything else is really good (especially the loukamades).  Good coffee too.

For the Loop worker bees...

SkrineChops breakfast sandwich.
8 oz. grilled porkchop, scrambled eggs, cheese, yukon gold garlic mashed potatoes, thin slice of red onion on a grilled kaiser roll.

You'll be asleep at your desk in an hour.

I spend about 1.5 hours at Wishbone every Thursday morning.  The place is generally empty.  I get all the coffee I can drink.  I order a breakfast and just chill and work.  Free wi-fi.  Unfortunately, the jambalaya omelet is only available on the weekends.  But, they do have other deliciousness.

Wife and I ate there when it was literally 2 blocks north, before attending this game. (http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2003-09-03/news/0309040047_1_antonio-alfonseca-cubs-ejected)  Looks like business has been good enough to allow them to move into the sweet spot  on the opposite side of the Mercury Theater from Cullens (although that spot didn't help the previous two restaurants there).  I recall it having a vegan vibe, even though it's not vegetarian.  They look a whole lot different in the new spot. Probably a good sign for them and, as it's a couple blocks from Clark Street, would be a good after-game dinner option for you.

What on Earth makes you think I'm going to see a game?

You'll end up going.

Ha!  You're almost certainly right.  I'll just do it in secret - switch off my phone and tell everybody I went on the architectural tour.

All things being equal, the architectural boat tour kicks ass over a chance to watch these guys play ball, but seeing as how you wouldn't have the contacts you've had so that you can enjoy a very social trip if it wasn't for those gutless cocksuckers, so it might be just a little weird if you didn't go to one game.  Plus, demand won't be high and you'll probably be watching prospects by then.  Profit!

Was a staple back in the Lincoln Park days. Never been for breakfast, only dinner.  Very good place.  Before Deleece, the chef was the personal chef for DeNiro or some other Hollywood bigwig.

Actually, the former chef for Deleece was the personal chef for Jack Nicholson, and now she has her own restaurant Sola, which I can vouch for as the shit. If you're going for brunch, the short rib benedict (https://docs.google.com/document/pub?id=1KCWg1sQJvnOqzw3O1uXKa2ceErBUSE62ky4KmHQbzbc) is ridiculous, and for dinner, get the wagyu burger (https://docs.google.com/document/pub?id=1SR42pKu7jR_H-Xzdu1REjUhnjc5R5UpXg_s14x8mTN8) topped off with a banana ice cream sundae.

That short rib benedict does sound like possibly the most delicious thing you could put in your mouth. (||)  As for the burger, though, I really don't think wagyu beef makes a good patty.  It's too soft.

That's it. West side of Sourthport, two or three store fronts up from Irving.  They've since moved a few buildings and opened a second location closer to Wrigley.

If Chicago Bagel Authority was not in Chicago, then add the town. If New York Pizza isn't in New York, then add the town. Is this that hard?

I don't understand.  The shop's called the Chicago Bagel Authority.  Theoretically, at least, it could be anywhere.

But it's not theoretically anywhere.  It's actually in Chicago.  If it wasn't, then sure, "Chicago Bagel Authority in Milwaukee."  If no town is specified I assume it's located in the same place as the name.  The exception is a widely known chain like Buffalo Wild Wings, most of which are probably not actually in Buffalo.  And thank you for letting me argue about this instead of doing actual work.

I hadn't realized that Chicago was so renown for its bagels that bagel establishments in other parts of the world might reasonably be expected to be named after it.

Pancakes with blueberries, strawberries and bananas (they flash a picture of this on their homepage, which I've added below). Had some sort of fancy vanilla-bean infused topping that blows the fuck out of whip cream... holy shit I don't recall being that satisfied with breakfast.

Edit:  the meal in question (apparently I just dreamt the blueberries part):

It saddens me that this thread has fallen by the wayside.  Over the past 8 months or so, I have a new appreciation for breaking my overnight fast each day.

Some of my favorites:

Greek sausage omelet at Lou Mitchell's.
Jambalaya omelet at Wishbone.
Skirt steak and eggs at S&G (Hawk knows what's up).

What else is out there?

Quote from: Wishbone's Menu
Jambalaya Omelette
Cajun stew with smoked chicken, chicken andouille sausage, peppers, onion & tomato.

Holy hell, that sounds good.

I used to work at Jackson & Halsted and when I had time for a longer lunch, I'd walk over to Wishbone.
Always an enjoyable lunch.

Skrine Chops now has a breakfast sandwich.

It's all you can imagine it would be.

It is one of my go to hung over on a weekday morning cure-alls.

So you're a regular then?

The last thing I am with a hangover is regular.

Perry's has breakfast now...they've got this beast called the Mad Moscow or something like that, 3 eggs and pastrami with Russian dressing.

I assume you mean a hot breakfast as they always served pastries. That's where the "Free stale pastry of your choice for the first person to correctly answer the following" came from.

Mad Moscow already was corned beef and pastrami on rye.

However, this is new:

Perry's sucks now.

And if you're in that spot and looking for breakfast, go to Blackwood for the bbq breakfast.  But if you want a real solid, sloppy breakfast, go across the street to UB Dogs.  Their breakfast bowl with Merk's and bacon is the dick.  And will ruin the rest of your day in a good way

Blackwood's actually expanded their options. But the breakfast bowl with half pork/half brisket is still the best breakfast for the money, even if I wind up tossing some of it because I don't want to microwave leftover eggs.
