Slider, slider, slider, good night.

Thanks, Chip.

I didn't say anything about the Battlin' Birdies.

Better than "He gone."

If you like movies like "The Royal Tennenbaums" and "A Thousand Clowns"  this is a movie that you will enjoy.   Kevin Kline, a failed playwriter takes  a cross-dressing English teacher played by Paul Dano to share the rent in a seedy Manhatten apartment.  Their neighbor is a bear of a man who speaks in falsetto, played by John C. Reilly.  Kline survives by escorting very elderly rich widows and makes Dano his protege.  The movie slows down in parts, but it is destined to be a cult classic.

No one has posted about this yet?  Maybe Mrs. Cubbieblue is right.  She says that I owe her for this one.  I think that she is just trying to clear the books and get us even for "Julie and Julia".  I enjoyed this movie.  It has a cloying ending and the "Schmuck off" between Carrell and Galifanakis which is suppposed to be the grand climax just didn't get there.  But the movie as a whole is very funny.  You can really see echoes of the French farce that inspired the movie.  In the French original they never even show the actual dinner.  This movie would have been better without it, because the build up is so great that the dinner couldn't possibly meet your expectations.  The blind fencer was funny, but there is nothing funny about the lady who has dry heaves while she talks to the spirits of the dead animals at the dinner table.  Steve Carrell is very good, and Paul Rudd will go down in movie history as one of the greatest straight men of all time.

One more:

"If there were such a thing as Chapter 11 for politicians, the Republican push to extend the unaffordable Bush tax cuts would amount to a bankruptcy filing. The nation's public debt ... will soon reach $18 trillion." It screams "out for austerity and sacrifice." But instead, the GOP insists "that the nation's wealthiest taxpayers be spared even a three-percentage-point rate increase." David Stockman.

Fred Thompson's commercial equating the expiration of the tax cuts with a tax increase for the person who is watching the commercial is one of the funniest things on TV.

Yet another moment to make this Arizonan beam with pride.

The inevitable overreaction response.

Quote
Brad Woodhouse, spokesman for the Democratic National Committee, told CNN that the candidate for a U.S. House seat from Arizona has no standing to judge Obama.

"The son of the worst vice president ever may think he has some wisdom on the job performance of political leaders, but if he thinks a president whose actions have saved the country from a second Great Depression, reformed a broken health care system and protected consumers from the risk and greed of Wall Street merits such mention, his analysis is only slightly less ridiculous than his candidacy for public office is," said Woodhouse.

Worst Vice President ever?!?

He's not even close.

Spiro Agnew?

Burr.

C'mon, what's a little light treason between friends?

Eldridge Gerry also worse.

William Rufus DeVane King

Hands down winner.  John Nance Garner, who described the job of Vice President of the United States  as "Not worth a bucket of  warm piss".  On the other hand, maybe that qualifies him as the best vice president ever.

Trammel delayed warming anyone up when it was clear to everyone else in the Park that Wells was consistently getting his pitches up.  Could Sandberg be worse?

I'm not much into whiskey, but I had a shot of some Irish stuff Monday night that was simply delicious and smooth.  I can't remember what it was called...some Irish name.

Good tequila is really good.

But, the good stuff...

When drinking a mixed drink, any vodka will do, even the cheap shit.  If you're not going to taste it anyway, why bother.  The exception is vodka and soda.  Use at least call vodka for that.  As for hangovers...well, if you're drinking enough mixed drinks to be hungover the next day, fuck off.  Do shots.

When doing shots, do nothing less expensive than Stoli.  In fact, Stoli is pretty much favorite that won't usually kill the wallet.  My dad keeps Svedka around.  Sometimes Three Olives.  Either is fine when not looking to go broke.  This is most certainly NOT sipping vodka.  Keep these strictly for shots.

When drinking martinis or on the rocks, keep to the expensive vodkas.  I prefer Chopin, which is a potato vodka.  Most places don't have that, but they do have Belvedere, which is the grain brother of Chopin.  I usually stick to one of these unless there's something really rare around.  I drink my martinis about as dry as can be.  You can never have too little vermouth.  Grey Goose is fine, but I just simply prefer the Polish stuff.

One more note.  For fuck's sake, do not get your vodka shots chilled, if they are not coming out of the freezer.  If you see a bartender begin to pour your vodka over ice before pouring it to your shot glass, yell at him/her.  It's a fucking crime.  Why would anyone water down their vodka like that?  Just man up and shoot it warm and not watered down.

God damn I love me my vodka.

What is your prefered brand to smash on the floor?

I don't remember.  I think it was Stoli.

Tell us about the absinthe.

I have the honor of being the first Desipiot to see Darwin Barney in  a Cub uniform.  Let's see.  I also saw someone named Coleman and someone named Mateo.  I told my son that he should demand a refund.  First base Nady, second base Dewitt, shortstop Castro, third base Baker, left field Colvin, center Byrd, right Fukudome, catcher Hill.   Baker is simply bad.  However, I watched the Cubs play small ball for one of the few times in my life.  I was impressed that they came back from back to back home runs followed by  a grand slam to tie the score at 7-7.  The Cubs actually scored runs with two outs!   Burrell's grand slam came right at us but hit the shield on the left field foul pole.  I would have thrown it back if I had caught it.

I can hardly wait to see my Governor in a movie again.

I dunno if there is a classical song I like more than O Fortuna

You know how I know you're a Nazi?

Carmina Burana is awesome. You're a commie if you think otherwise. It's actually on my iPod(phone, whatever)

You ain't heard nothing until you have heard it performed by the San Francisco Gay Men's chorus.   Pardon me, Apex, Ghey Men's Chorus.

Tonight notwithstanding, the Cubs have more home losses in the last 3 games than the Sux do in their last 22.

Tonight withstanding, the Sox are getting fucking HOUSED by the Twins.  8-3 in the 4th.  So, shut up, I guess.

I enjoyed watching last night's ass-whooping of the Sux.

But I'm just trying to keep this thread on track about how truly shitty the Cubs are.

I was struck by how little this team resembles the team that left Spring Training, let alone last year's barely winning team.  I am looking forward to going to today's game.  By the end I may be a Giant's fan.
1407  General Category / Desipio Lounge / Re: Fuck these goddamn gutless fucking assholes on: August 11, 2010, 09:17:00 AM
This should be in the Turdthrow thread. But as much as I enjoyed Brandon Phillips saying what we were all thinking, the whole yelling and screaming at the team that's winning a home series from you and about to pass you in the standings deal smacks of 2004 Cubs to me. All that's missing is an in-game call to the press box. I haven't heard the Reds announcers do anything but crap on other teams this year though. Which is also getting old quick.

On the local Cubs/Giants broadcast last night Jon Miller and Krukow couldn't stop talking about the fight between the Cards and the Reds.   They wanted to avoid having to talk about Lincecum's early departure.  Miller did interupt his description of the fight to pay a lengthy homage to his high school journalism teacher at Hayward High.  Miller is a gasbag.  He almost makes me appreciate Joe Morgan.

Looks incredible. Were you watching Hung? Kelly from King of Queens whipped out her jugs.

Since this is the new Hung thread, I just started getting caught up on all the seasons of this show.
It's pretty clever. Happy that mike's now getting in the game. Ronnie is a hoot. Basing this series in Detroit
has to generate a lot of American optimism for this poor city.

I know, Boardwalk Empire is going to be so sweet.

King of Queens, Broadwalk Empire, Hung.  I thought that this was supposed to be a Simpsons thread.

Trollish? That's a bit strong. I like ol' Lane.

Strictly in terms of physical appearance. (Though he's probably considered an Adonis across the pond.)

Take away the glasses and give him a different haircut and he is still homely as hell.

My birthday was last April.   My sons bought me tickets for this Thursday's game.  It didn't look like such a waste of time in early  April.
