It looks like the Cubs won't be able to draft the guy the Astros draft.

What's clear is that Appel, Gray and Bryant will all be available when Houston picks. And, should Houston choose one of those three, only two of them will then be available for the Cubs.

That's where things get a bit more complicated...

If the Astros pick Appel first, of the three mentioned above only Gray and Bryant will remain for the Cubs to pick from.

If, on the other hand, Houston goes with Gray, only Appel and Bryant will be left.

It's also possible, however, (though the consensus seems to be that it's probably less likely) that the Astros will go with Bryant with their pick, or even someone else entirely.

In that case, the Cubs would most likely be picking between Appel and Gray (and possibly Bryant, if the Astros didn't pick him).

You forgot that the Astros (who are located in Texas) could pick a high-school pitcher from Texas (which is in Texas), because that's often how major-league teams make decisions.

They could also take a different player than any of the ones previously mentioned. This would leave the Cubs a different list of available players to select.

This is a developing story, so stay tuned for further analysis of these scenarios.

What happens if the phone lines to the Cubs front office are cut the day of the draft and all of their cell phone batteries run out and their legs fall off? That could have an impact on the draft.

Probably Appel.
Maybe Gray.

Definitely Appel or Gray.

Except maybe Bryant.
Could be Bryant.

But definitely Appel.

It's looking more like whichever of Appel or Gray the Astros don't take.

Unless it's Bryant.

Or unless the Astros take Bryant.

Let's see how it plays out.

If the Astros didn't take either Appel or Gray, it's because they took Stewart.

Ok... So we've whittled it down to Appel or Gray, possibly Bryant.

Why don't we just trade the pick for Dempster?

Should I be worried about him?

Depends on what your initial expectations were.

I think that's the problem. My expectations for Starlin were too high - something like an extended prime where he was a top 3 shortstop every year. At this point a top 10 SS is probably more realistic and probably not worth having a sad over.

You were the one who told us he was the next Garry Templeton, so I don't know why you expected Barry Larkin.

Great job not linking to the post in which I didn't say he was the next Garry Templeton.

No idea what you're talking about.

Your link took me to an Apex post. Also, I didn't write the article comparing Templeton to Castro, I just thought it might generate some interesting sportz talk.

Should I be worried about him? His OBP has been on a downward trend for a couple years now and power numbers are down from last year's improvement.

god damn it the robinson cano thing is not happening chuck

So, you're on board with Price and Scherzer?  Cool.

Pretty unlikely the Cubs would get both, but they'd at least make sense from an age/talent/positional standpoint.

First of all I am very much enjoying this Cubes baseball discussion. I had not heard until reading this thread that Scherzer was even a trade possibility, and was a little surprised that he'd be mentioned in the same sentence as Price. Price is a year younger, but Scherzer's numbers are slightly better:

Price:      839 IP, 3.52 FIP, 8.3 K/9, 15 WAR
Scherzer: 852 IP, 3.62 FIP, 9.4 K/9, 16.9 WAR

And what's this about Matt Moore? Why would the Rays trade him this offseason when he'll only be 24?

I recently learned of some very strongly worded criticism of Mr. Wallace post-death and they made me sad. Does he suck and we're just fake smart jags? Or are people who are overly critical of him the fake smart jags?

Better yet - we're all jags.

If I find out the #Cools out there hate Tom Pynchon I'll just throw myself into a dumpster and live out my days with Ryan Reaves.

I've read more than a few things about Wallace's friendship/rivalry with Franzen and I think Franzen might be a jag, if that helps.

If you want to just hate yourself read this. Apparently #smarts really enjoyed it. It was written by someone from TonkerLand,

Wow. I made it through the whole thing which I think means I'm a #clever. I didn't really get the guilt-by-association thing in the non-Wallace section (Eggers sucks because his brother works somewhere....uh, what?), but the Wallace criticisms (like the Nardil stuff) were more interesting. I especially enjoyed this quote:

This confirms what we’ve always known: secretly, hipsters do like all the dreck they pretend to enjoy ironically.

That is spooky because I was just listening to this yesterday.
So good. Here's a link to the unedited speech:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZXljbi57Hg

Just finished Girl with Curious Hair. Some of the stories are a slog but if you're a DFW fan, definitely worth your time. You can see echoes of the voice he perfected in Infinite Jest in the story about Jeopardy, and the last one about a reunion of everyone who's ever starred in a McDonald's commercial.

It's spooky that he posted something that everyone on the internet was listening to in the last 48 hours?

(That said, it's cool as hell. Just pointing out that you're a weinis.)

I didn't know that all the cools were listening to it, internet arbiter. I was just revisiting this old page after finishing my book.

This show is getting really stupid and drawn out. The main agent (keri russell) is supposed to be incapable of loving her husband, because she loves her country so much. But she loves 2 other KGB guys and goes against superior orders to kill a CIA head. Then she wants to reconcile with her husband, who moves on, so that storyline can keep getting dragged out. Her weird relationship with the old lady she beat the hell out of seems completely out of left field. I hope Stan kills everyone in the season finale.

Yeah, the first 5 or 6 episodes of this were the testicles, but the last few weeks have been very slow and kinda boring. Hopefully things will pick up in the finale.

Every one of you ripping Hub, where did you play your college ball?

Oh, nevermind. Huey Long would have improved the Bears guard corps and he's been dead since George Halas was mocking the New York Giants for wearing sneakers on the icy Polo Grounds turf. The fact that Kyle Long actually played guard for a few games in college and is a living, breathing human, and the words "Stan" and "Thomas" do not appear on his Social Security card, these are all good things.

This is my only issue with the pick - given the age of the defense and the fact that this could be Cutler's last stand, they seem to be a team in win-now mode. And given Long's rawness it could be a year or two before he's ready to truly maul some sons of bitches in the trenches.

Here, Eli - read this and you'll feel better.

Quote
“The baseball department is spending every dollar that is allocated to baseball operations,” Epstein continued. “Yeah, we’re spending it in the draft and we’re spending it in the minor leagues. There’s only so much you can spend there. We’re also spending every dollar we have available on the Major League payroll. We need a renovated Wrigley Field to produce more revenue. We need new TV deals so we can generate significant local revenue that way.”

Quote
I don’t quite know how to take these comments. Epstein is clearly frustrated, but I can’t tell whether he’s frustrated by the media’s repeated questions that (he believes) unfairly paints the Cubs’ financial situation, or whether he’s frustrated by a lack of resources. If it’s the latter, I can’t tell whether he’s frustrated by a city that has been so intransigent in allowing the Cubs to generate the revenue that they could be generating, or whether he’s frustrated by (what he perceives to be) a tight-fisted owner. I suspect that folks will take Epstein’s comments to support whatever pre-existing beliefs they already held.

Here's a dumb question as I drool over Justin Upton's numbers this year: is there any chance in hell the Cubs could've matched the package the Braves sent over?

Full disclosure: looking forward to the moment when Huey is reminded that one of the centerpieces of the trade was Randall Delgado, Cub-to-be until Dempster wisely put the kibosh on it.

http://www.overthemonster.com/2013/1/24/3912312/justin-upton-trade-boston-red-sox-arizona-diamondbacks-atlanta-braves

Quote
Upton reiterated this week that the Diamondbacks were wasting their time talking to the four teams on his recently submitted no-trade list. He was not willing to play for Seattle, the Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox or Chicago Cubs. The Diamondbacks believed the list was a negotiating ploy, but Upton told them it wasn't about the money. He did not want to play for those franchises.

Ah, forgot about that. Screw that asshole and his 85 HR pace and his illogical no-trade list.
