18 innings in Yankee Stadium and 0 runs.

This offense might be the worst that I can remember in my lifetime.

This offense might be the worst that I can remember in my lifetime.

Runs scored through 12 games, 2014: 47

Examples from the recent past:

2013: 42 (Brent Nillibridge, Dave Sappelt, Alberto Gonzalez, Scott Hairston)
2012: 43 (Ian Stewart, Darwin Barney, Joe F. Mather, Blake F. DeWitt, Bryan LaHair, Steve Clevenger)
2002: 43 (Turd Hundley, Delino DeShields, Chris Stynes, Bobby Hill)

I'm not saying this offense is good - and indeed, I don't think anybody really expected it to be - but we've seen worse (helloooo 2012) and in fairness, they did come up against two hot pitchers.  Tanaka and Pineda together, even before yesterday, were sporting a WHIP below 1.00 and an ERA below 3.00.  Also (I watched the game, guh), Tanaka was getting the low strike all afternoon long.

People like to claim bad current things as the "Worst they've ever seen" when I'm pretty sure they've seen worse.... like the previous 3 years

The Tanaka thing was an extra slap in the face. He certainly looks like an ace so far.

Actually, with the two shutouts last night, the 2014 Cubs did become the worst offensive team in living memory with an average of just 3.36 runs per game.  The only two seasons worse than that were 1916 and 1919 with 3.33 and 3.24 runs per game, respectively.

Working only with completed seasons, though, and assuming for a moment that CFiHP started watching the Cubs in, say, 1995, then the worst offense he can remember is... *drum roll*...

The 2013 Chicago Cubs, with just 3.71 runs per game!

Closely followed by the 2012 Cubs (3.78 rpg), the 2011 Cubs (4.04 rpg) and the 2010 Cubs (4.23 rpg)

If we can go back just a little bit further, though, the 1981 Cubs (3.49 rpg) were worse than anything we've seen since the aforementioned 1919, closely followed by the 1992 Cubs (3.66 rpg).  Last, but not least, Stew might remember the 1963 Cubs (3.52 rpg) as being especially sucky.

So, you know... CFiHP might not be right, but he's nort exactly wrong, either.

And yes, I know I should have dug out the average runs per game per year for comparison.  I couldn't be arsed.

I hope someone on this site is tracking most bunts in a season by a team, this cubs team is going to smash it.

The bunting is crazy. It's almost as if Renteria is the opposite type of manager that Theo would like.

Has Theo ever said "I hate bunting!" or are we just remembering things that never happened?

Ever since Theo the start of each spring training has had a fucking Bunt Tournament. This year they postponed the one in Mesa and kicked it off once the season started.

I can deal with the losing but this bunting is fucking rocking my nuts off.

The statlosers will tell you bunting is rarely a good idea, so I'd assume Theo believes in that philosophy as well.
Especially on a team that can't score, wasting outs bunting seems like a really stupid idea, especially when you do it 7+ times a game. The defense has to know what's coming at that point.

Statnerds and meatballs can agree... it's never a good idea to bunt runners into scoring positions for Darwin Barney.

We all agree. the MANAGER of a pro baseball team (allegedly) doesn't seem to agree. So is someone going to talk to him? Hey buddy stop bunting.

It'd be cool if he stopped doing this.

Castillo bunted on his own yesterday according to Renteria, so there's that.

http://espn.go.com/blog/chicago/cubs/post/_/id/23122/cubs-go-down-quietly-in-new-york

QuoteCastillo bunting: Renteria indicated catcher Welington Castillo bunted on his own in the fifth inning of Game 2 on Wednesday night. With runners on first and second and none out, Castillo laid down a nice sacrifice, but it wasn't what his manager wanted.

"We wanted him to swing the bat," he said.

The Cubs' Nos. 8 and 9 hitters were due up, as Kalish subsequently struck out and Barney flew out. Renteria has used the bunt often so far this season, so maybe Castillo thought it was the right move. It wasn't.
