In the article I read, writer/creator Terence Winter said that they changed Johnson to Thompson so that they could fictionalize the character and take creative license with history and add suspense. Good move by one of the best television writers who ever lived.

As if this show wasn't titburgers enough, there's now a sniper with half of a face. The extended monologues they have at least one a week of (Chalky's bookcase story, Jimmy's barbed wire story) are just outstanding.
