La Russa said Tuesday he thinks the three-time NL MVP is being pushed to set a new standard with his contract, and he said that’s unfair to the player.

Won't anyone think of the poor guy being pressured into making more money than anyone else in his sport has ever made? IT'S UNFAIR!

In Tony's defense, Albie probably is raking in Social Security, so that's a few hundred a month he doesn't need his club to pay for.

I'm not sure what I want more: Albie to leave St. Louis for an AL team I could care less about or Albie to saddle the Tards or some other NL team I hate with that 10-year contract.

Worst case: He gives the Tards that comfy hometown discount.
Second-worst case: He saddles the Cubs with 10 years of bad paper.

I do not think that Albert is giving the Cardinals any kind of discount at all.  I wouldnt mind him patrolling first base for the cubs for until 2016, maybe 2017 at 30MM per (hell its Todds money, make it 35).

Ah, hell, by then they can put him on waivers, and then it's Jerry's money.

I join La Russa in his sadness that that meddling players union might bully poor Albert into making such a poor life choice as this.

Where did they even get all those anvils anyways?

BTW, best comment I've read yet on the article Hawk linked...

How about Pujols agrees to a lower contract amount, but also in that contract the Cards have to spend the money they saved on lower ticket prices? I'd like to see that. Pujols would be a hero. Standing O every time he was at bat.

It's win-win!

If only, just once, Albert Pujols could feel what it's like to get a standing ovation at Busch stadium.

All he has to do is admit to steroid use.

It's National Pujols Day... A day of hope for some owner outside of St. Louis, in all likelihood, because it doesn't look like he'll sign.
