Is there a lunch today?

I think I'm going to do Hot Doug's today, actually.

Eating alone, then?

If anybody would like to join me, they'd be very welcome.

I'd join you on a day that I don't work.  Why don't you be a good Aussie and come to the loop for a slunch?

Because there's going to be a Shoutlunch at Skrinechops tomorrow, and I need to be up Hot Doug's way today anyway...

Too bad you're not going on Friday - that's duck fat fries day.

After Big & Little's truffle fries yesterday, I can live with that.

Go to Superdawg instead and I'll join you.

Much as I'd like to visit Wisconsin...

In reality, it's half way between downtown and O'Hare.  Well, the original is.

It may as well be.

More importantly, it's conveniently en route to O'Hare.

So: gorge on pizza at Candlelite, zip west on Touhy and Devon to Superdawg for a Whoopskidawg to-go, Nagle to 90 to O'Hare to Den Haag.

What a good idea.  If there's one thing I need this week, it's an extra meal.

Wish I could get out to HD.  I highly recommend the Thuringer as one of your selections, and remind you its cash only.

As for Candelite/Superdawg-- you could get a 'za to go and wash it down with a lovely shake

It is about time someone really stress-tested those steerage lavs. Maybe they'll upgrade you.

Shitballs. See you on the next go 'round. Maybe when this is all over you and I can get a little apartment together with an air conditioner and a bathroom large enough for a shag.

So, Hot Doug's.  Well worth the three-and-a-half mile walk there (from Paulina Red) and back (to Addison Brown).  I was in and out in 45 minutes, and had the Chicago dog (with everything, natch), the Italian with caramelised onions, and the foie gras/duck.  The first two were outstanding - the best Chicago dog I've had, period, and the best Italian sausage I've had outside of, well... Italy.  The foie gras, though, was something of a disaster.  There's far too much foie gras on it, and it desperately needs something to cut the richness - something sweet and sour, maybe onion marmalade.  The truffle aioli is just making matters worse and absolutely drowns the flavour of the sausage - there's supposed to be sauternes in there which in theory is a fantastic idea but in practice completely disappears behind everything else.

Anyway, the staff were really friendly, the line wasn't too long and the two sausages I did enjoy made me very glad I went.  Next up, Skrinechops.  Or, possibly, the gastro-enterologist.

Also, I'm pretty sure celery salt is the World's second greatest invention, behind babywipes.

No, it is not. If I want Château d'Yquem, it's not for putting into a goddamned cooked sausage.

Yes, it is.  Sauternes and foie gras is a classic combination.  Why the fuck should the wine you use for cooking be any different to any other ingredient?  You use the best, you get the best.  The dish was just very badly balanced.
