Mariotti puts down the doughnut to clearly relish the thought that the Sox could blow the biggest lead of all time. What was completely unthinkable a week ago, is now intriguing. Give it another week like this and the Sox will be in all-out panic. But it has to get even closer, fast. There’s just not much time left.

Dusty Baker actually believes (or at least is saying) that it’s a sign of progress that the fans hate him and big hunks of his team. See, in Dusty’s world, the fact that fans are upset proves that he’s doing his job, because he thinks that before he got here, Cubs’ fans didn’t care if their teams won. In Dusty’s mind, this proves he’s got them going in the right direction. This cannot, however, be true of a team that is under .500 on August 24 with a $100 million payroll. Dusty would be right to assume that expectations are higher, and he’d be right to say that progress had been made if the Cubs were, say, something mediocre, but not abysmal, like 67-59 and in the Wild Card hunt. But they’re not. They’ve been lousy and he’s a big reason why.

Dusty confirms his lunacy by saying that if Nomar goes on the DL (his happy place) that Ronny Cedeno will come up…and sit, while Neifi plays. This makes perfect sense. Dusty says he likes Ronny and that he won’t use them.

Nomar blames his back injury on being hit in the back by Julian Tavarez a couple Saturday’s ago. At the time, the plunking was obviously intentional, yet the Cubs didn’t do anything about it. Nice. Well, the Cards will be back in September. Might be a good time to start a fight or three.
