Hello again everybody, we are live from the 2003 National League Championship Series game one at Wrigley Field.

Wrigley Field! We’re not even kidding! Who knew?

Before we get started, I hope a lot of you got a chance to watch the pregame "Push for the Pennant" show on WGN-TV. If you did, you no doubt saw the most memorable commercial we’ll see all year. You got it, the one with the pre-teen boy talking about how his diapers keep him from wetting the bed every night.

How much money did they have to pay that kid to make that commercial?

He’ll get beaten up every day at school for the next seven years and won’t get a date until he’s 30. And then, she’d better be Amish, so she’s never seen that commercial.

But, as usual, I digress. The most important thing is the pennant. It’s right there for the taking.

Jeannie Zelasko is skanked up, Kevin Kennedy’s hair has been freshly sculpted and Juan Pierre just said the walls at Wrigley are covered with "ivory."

If the first tie breaker is a spelling bee, the Marlins are at a disadvantage.

Damn, I wish somebody would remind me the last time the Cubs were in the World Series. I just can’t remember.

Karry Ling is back from Vegas where he had that interview this morning with the white tiger who attacked Roy Horn, and now Karry has another white tiger…Marlins decrepit octogenarian manager Jack McKeon.

    Karry?

    B.C. on October 7, 2003 at 7:10 pm

It isn’t "World’s Scariest Police Videos 24" (Although Fox surely could find a way to combine those two shows).

It isn’t "When Animals Attack 11".

Heck, it isn’t even "The Simpsons".

It’s the Marlins and the Cubs live from Wrigley Field!

    Starting time: 7:18 PM CT.

Announcers: Thom Brennaman, Steve Lyons, Al Leiter, and a sideline reporter who will certainly screw at least two names up in the first game.

Yes, THAT Al Leiter. You know, a Met. A NEW YORK MET! Thank God Ronnie isn’t going to be there. Or else we’d have World War III tonight.

Thom and Steve were fawning over themselves trying to propel the Braves to victory in the NLDS from the Fox broadcasting booth (Although they were more listenable than the BRUTAL Jon Miller/Joe Morgan combo on ESPN). Then Thom made the biggest mistake any play-by-play guy (Harry Caray excepted, because he’d criticize a player one minute and love him the next) could ever make, slam a Major League Baseball SUPERSTAR (Manny Ramirez) for hitting a homer and celebrating a tad too long. Thom, if you were so concerned with the plight of the sport of baseball go become Commissioner or something. If you don’t, then shut up and go back to announcing Diamondbacks games where nobody can hear you. Glad I got that off my chest, aren’t you?

    Al Leiter? Are you SERIOUS?
Heck, he is a FORMER MARLIN! Did I mention he’s a current Met. Let’s see:

We have a former Cub announcer (Thommy). We have a former Chicago White Sock (Psycho). And we have a former Marlin AND current New York Met (Leiter). Heck Joe Buck could be more objective on the Cubs than those three will…

    The key to this game:
Which manager will drink Ensure first? Oh, wait, that was the last Marlins series… :-)

The REAL key to this game:
    Which Alex Gonzalez is better?

  6. Karry Ling
Karry Ling on October 7, 2003 at 7:10 pm

Hello there everybody, Karry Ling here at Wrigley Field with Marlins manager Jack McKeon. Jack, you joined the Marlins in June, what were you doing with yourself before that this summer?

    Jack: "Two words: shuffleboard."

Karry: "Uh, that’s only…oh, never mind. Hey, I’m sure you want to send your best wishes to Ron Santo, don’t you Jack?"

Jack: "Santo? What’s wrong with him?"

Karry: "Well, he’s had both legs amputated and now he’s got tumors in his bladder."

Jack: "BOTH, legs amputated? I’ll have to have Pierre bunt on him, then."

Karry: "Yeah. OK. Uh, thanks Jack."

    Back to you, Andy

If Dusty Baker can harness the power of these little red lady-bug like beetles that have taken over Desipio HQ, the Cubs will win this one in two games.

So far, the highlight of the pre-game (other than the bed wetting commercial of course) was Kevin Kennedy telling us that Josh Beckett has a 12-6 curve and then drawing a little clock with a 12 and a 6 on it. Yikes.

  8. B.C.
    B.C. on October 7, 2003 at 7:13 pm

Hey, there’s that FOX Romeo and Juliet rip-off again!

Couldn’t they at least copy "The Tempest"? Not as many people know something about that Shakespeare play.

Speaking of a tempest, isn’t that being a Cubs fan before this year?

  9. Shooter Flasch
Shooter Flasch on October 7, 2003 at 7:13 pm

    I mean pennant!

    Go Cubs!

I have no words for tHom’s hair. My only guess is that he’s Paulie Walnut’s stunt double on The Sopranos next year.

  12. B.C.
    B.C. on October 7, 2003 at 7:15 pm

Al Leiter… Don’t you know the Cubs don’t hit it up the middle (Unless it’s Damian Miller with a runner on first and less than two outs)? We either strike out, pull it down the line, or hit a homer you bum!

  13. Al Leiter
Al Leiter on October 7, 2003 at 7:16 pm

Most annoucers look at the camera. I would rather gaze longingly into Thom’s eyes.

Don’t forget Andy you need to predict a Cubs win before the game starts.

  16. Andy
Andy on October 7, 2003 at 7:17 pm

I think Al Leiter thought he was filming a hostage video and not a pre-game stand up.

"The Cubs have (blink-blink-blink) some good (blinkblinkblink) pitchers and stuff (blink-blink-blink), and so do the Marlins."

  17. Andy
Andy on October 7, 2003 at 7:18 pm

    Sure enough.

Tonight’s score will be (don’t even bother watching the game, this is a sure thing–go watch "8 Rules for Burying My Dead Father" on ABC).

    Cubs 6, Marlins 1

Carlos Zambrano is on the mound for the Cubs and he just said to the camera, "I must kill the Marlins!"

    I think he just might.

Juan Pierre, or Pierre Juan or somebody is leading off for the Fish.

  21. B.C.

Zambrano making like… Scott Williamson. I didn’t know we traded for him over the night.

    Ball one.

    Ball two.

    Steeeeeeeeee-rike one.

    Ball three.

Steeeeeeeeeeee-rike two. tHom thought it was borderline. Cue the Madonna music!

    Pahhhhhped it up.

The pretty Alex Gonzalez has it and there’s one away.

I won’t do the pitches for every hitter.

That was just in case Carlos started the game with 12 straight bad ones.

  23. B.C.

    I must kill the Cubs!

    I mean, Marlins of course.

  37. B.C.
    B.C. on October 7, 2003 at 8:17 pm

Wouldn’t it be our luck that it’s possible for the Cubs’ NLCS to be:

    1 great inning (The 1st)
    1 good inning (The 2nd)
34 innings from Hell (The 3rd tonight through the end of Game 4)

  38. Andy
Andy on October 7, 2003 at 8:18 pm

Don’t you just love our little Sox friend who stops by when the other team is ahead. He was pretty quiet on Monday.

Carlos just gave up a single to their pitcher. Just to clarify, this is not a good thing.

I missed one, Alex Gonzalez grounded out to Alex Gonzalez. Huh?

  39. B.C.
    B.C. on October 7, 2003 at 8:19 pm

Hey, what’s all this negativity? Wrest your site back, Andy!

Were the Marlins this down on themselves when it was 4-0 and you guys were dancing? No, they weren’t, otherwise they never would have come back.

Tonne of time. Knuckle down. Do the job.

  43. B.C.

  47. Andy
Andy on October 7, 2003 at 8:22 pm

I know Dave Veres asked Flynn Kile for one of Darryl’s gloves, but I think she gave him his arm, too.

Pierre tries to run on Paul Bako.

Bako says, "You’re not gonna pay a lot for this muffler!"

Or something. Pierre’s out. And, it’s still 5-4 Marlins.

  48. Juan Pierre

  52. Andy

Pudge wanted a pitch high on an 0-2 count. He stood up.

    Eww.

  59. B.C.
    B.C. on October 7, 2003 at 8:28 pm

Left field umpire in Game 1 wouldn’t do home plate until Game 6, that’s why.

  61. Andy
Andy on October 7, 2003 at 8:30 pm

Lyons says that early on in games the pitcher doesn’t worry about getting hitters out. Sure.

If you ever wondered why pitchers hate pitching to Pudge, you just saw it. He called timeout for no apparent reason during his pitcher’s windup.

    Bako grounds to second.

    Blah.

    After four, 5-4 Marlins.

Apparently Luis Castillo doesn’t know Remlinger’s tougher on righties, as he bats that way against him. He chops one past the mound and reaches on an infield single.

Pudge up and I’m not saying a word, nor grasping a straw.

Not the best center field play of all time.

    Yikes.

    Only one out.

  214. B.C.

Hollandsworth gets a double, as Kenny Lofton inexplicably was playing shallow, in my opinion.

Well, that 1-2 pitch on Hollandsworth should have been strike 3. But I digress.

Moises with a great diving catch to end the inning.

I’m not saying we need to end this in the tenth, but El Pulpo and Guthrie are warming up in the bullpen.

    Gulp.

After NINE AND A HALF, tied at eight.

You know what I love about extra inning home games? The mosh pit at home plate when a Cub scores the game winning run.

We’re about to see just that.

    Be afraid, be very afraid.

  257. Andy
Andy on October 7, 2003 at 10:40 pm

I think Randall’s postseason struggles have to do with him facing good pitchers. He’s not just a bad ball hitter, he’s a bad pitcher hitter.

Of course, now that Ugy will be pinch hit for, bat pitchers are all the Marlins have left.

  258. Jim Riggleman
Jim Riggleman on October 7, 2003 at 10:41 pm

This is where pulling Remmy too early comes back to bite the Cubs. Now our hopes in this game rest on either Alpo, the awful Veres, or the even worse Guthrie. Egads. I guess Alpo is the lesser of three evils, let’s see if that’s how Dusty plays it.

El Pulpo in to face Luis Castillo.

We are determined to follow the Diamondbacks model of winning a World Series. Inconsistent offense, bad extra inning losses, two good pitcher.

Castillo grounds to short and tHom says, "When he hit the ball you knew Gonzalez wouldn’t have a play." He’s right, because it’s Ramon Martinez at short.

El Pulpo will put this out of reach. Great.

  274. Observant Reader
Observant Reader on October 7, 2003 at 10:51 pm

No kidding Thom, since Gonzo is now on the bench, Martinez is in the game.

  275. Andy
Andy on October 7, 2003 at 10:52 pm

The reason El Pulpo didn’t start this inning was what we just saw. Castillo took off on the first pitch and stole second easily.

Dusty was trying to pray that Guthrie would get Lowell, then get him through Pierre and Castillo. If anybody got on, then Pulpo would come in.

    It’s all going wrong now.

The Cubs walk Pudge to pray for a double play.

Good call Andy re: the DBacks analogy, but it assumes our bullpen doesn’t lose one for Mark or Kerry. More likely they blow one, and we either need to pull this one out, or get one of the Clement start or the other Zambrano start to pull this out in seven.

  280. Andy
Andy on October 7, 2003 at 10:58 pm

    There’s hope.

Cabrera lines hard to Ramon, terrible baserunning by the Marlins and the Cubs get an easy double play force.

It’s a one run game. But then, it was a two-run game in the ninth.

It’s bleak though, Martinez, Miller and Lofton. Sammy’s lurking in the background though.
