How did he hit 20 homers last year? Is he going to get 20 hits this year?

Has he not had a hit since his walk off double against against San Diego?  And, if so, has the San Diego pitcher killed himself yet?

If the Padres hadn't PANKED the cutoff throw, Soto would have been hosed at the plate. And we'd all be dead right now.

He got a hit off the great Barry Enright in the seventh inning of the April 28, 2011 game. With the Cubs within nine runs, Colvin lashed a single to the gap in right center to send Marlon Byrd to third. Geo's sac fly brought the Cubs within eight 10-2. Alas, Colvin has been hitless since then. He struck out against the great Josh Collmenter in the ninth and has proceeded to go 0-for-31 with two walks, an RBI, a run scored, a sacrifice, and nine strikeouts. That's a .000/.061/.000/.061 line for you.

You wonder about the sacrifice and the run scored? It came May 31 against Houston. He pushed a bunt towards Jordan Lyles, who decided to gun down Brad Snyder at third. The throw went wild, Snyder scored (tying the game) and Colvin scored the go ahead run.

Would Javy Baez do any worse?

I think that it is outrageous that he won't be able to get to .000 this season.  Or can he?

Watching this team makes me sad. I want nothing more than for him to turn it around and serve as the centerpiece of a Peavy/Roberts/Maybin deadline bonanza.

Why we aren't starting Vitters too? Maybe quade is worried about the building owners across the street when one of Vitters tape measure shots scream through brick.

Didn't Bonnie Hunt have a terrible sitcom that took place in a building across from Wrigley? The one episode I remember watching had a recurring gag about windows constantly breaking due to Grace and Sosa homers.

Vitters didn't get 400 at bats last year, and then only a handful of at bats this year.

It's the opening montage for the first Bonnie Hunt vehicle, "The Building."  This happens to be a building in Wrigleyville.  On Sheffield.  With a rooftop.  And this was 1993, so the rooftop was apparently not a revenue-generating device yet.  Some of the men have mustaches.  They show Wrigley Field numerous times, a firehouse, the El, cops on horseback, and other LOCAL THINGS.

Fork only got asshurt about NY on TV when he moved here.

I always wanted to live in the NY that existed on NBC Thursday nights before "Law & Order".

You mean where somewhat attractive twentysomethings with shitty jobs can never go to work and make enough money to somehow have huge apartments and go out all the time?  Yeah, I never saw that New York either.

And they never had bed bugs. What gives, television fat cats?

Dude--it was made abundantly clear throughout the series that Monica Geller was living in her grandma's apartment and it was RENT CONTROLLED.

1) There were what, 6 different NYC-based twentysomething shows during that time frame?
2) *Somebody* knows an awful lot about Friends.  I'm not sayin', I'm just sayin'.

Did you see the wanker who touched the ball high-fiving everybody around him when the homer was reduced to a double?  Woo!  I interfered with a baseball game!

I honestly believe that, just to clear up any confusion there might be as to whether it's a good thing or not, we should introduce twenty lashes for anybody who reaches over a railing in a ballpark.

EDIT: Also, I know it's a meatball thing to say, but Quade really needed to get himself ejected there.  A ninth-inning, go-ahead homer gets taken away from you and you shrug and accept it?  It doesn't actually matter whether the decision was correct or not - it sends the wrong message.

Wrong message? That you're going to accept a ruling by a group that changes its decisions based on manager complaints approximately .00∞1% of the time?

Quade was in the dugout helping Caleb Hanie. Like a true leader.

Yetti, you and I already had this discussion at Cody's - you know my feelings on arguing with umpires.  This, however, has nothing to do with the umpires, and everything to do with the message it sent to the players.

I honestly believe that, just to clear up any confusion there might be as to whether it's a good thing or not, we should introduce twenty lashes for anybody who reaches over a railing in a ballpark.

Isn't the obvious solution to design better outfield walls? One of the beautiful things about Wrigley is that that Basket is the Yellow Line. There's no ambiguity.  No fan can touch the ball without it already being a home run.

Fuck the Phillies architect.

If the Cubs get pwned by Halladay today and fail to win 3 in a row for the first time, it will be largely because Quade refused to refuse to tolerate bullshit last night.

Hi All, (http://firedustybaker2.wordpress.com/2011/06/06/open-thread-72/#comment-6728)
Here's my take on it. In the last thread, people were talking about changing their allegiance and rooting for another team. You know what? I'm not wired that way. I'm a Cubs fan, through and through. AND, I believe that each of you feel the same way.

So, here's what I'm thinking. I'm going to root for the Chicago Cubs. I'm going to root for them more than I ever have before. But, here's the catch. I'm going to root for them to lose each and every fucking game that they play until management finally gets a clue that far reaching changes are needed. When that happens, we can then hope that Hendry and Quade are both relieved of their duties. Let's dump all of the old regime salaries and eat whatever needs to be eaten to make the rest go away. Start from scratch and BUILD a winner. At that point, maybe we can bring in Ryne Sandberg to lead the talent search and make the tough (and smart) managerial decisions which seem to elude Mr. Q.

So, I ask you all to join me in rooting for the Chicago Cubs. Let's root for them to continue this slide until it gets us the change we so deserve.

Of all Cubs traditions new and old, there isn't one I enjoy as much as the new one of giving shitty players Sosa's old number.

I remember we laughed about this in the SBox at the time, but 2 months into the season, it looks even more ridiculous.

Scroll down for his "bold prediction" about the Cubs. (http://sports.espn.go.com/fantasy/baseball/flb/story?page=mlbdk2k11_tmrheardme)

Quote
Tyler Colvin hits 40 home runs. I'm thinking: The bold part isn't the number (OK, it's a little high) but he did hit 20 last year in about 350 at-bats. The bold part is playing time, but he's been taking some time at first this spring, as well. One way or the other, he'll find his way into the lineup.

Edited: It is worth noting, after a re-read, that there are some decent looking "bold predictions" on there, particularly Bedard, Colon and Morse.

Would he, Matt Murton and Tuffy Rhodes form the greatest HR hitting outfield in Japan's history?

Bruce Miles and Carrie report Tyler Colvin will shine on that crazy Iowa diamond after being demoted to make room for Reed Johnson.  He's getting his swing back!

Don't do this. It angers the semen.

Murton the Giant Slayer (http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/06/15/yu-darvishs-scoreless-inning-streak-stopped-at-46/).

QuoteYu Darvish, who tied a Pacific League record with his third straight shutout last week, gave up two runs in a complete-game loss Wednesday as the Hanshin Tigers edged the Nippon-Ham Fighters 2-1.

Darvish's scoreless streak was up to 46 innings when he gave up a run in the third inning today.  He later gave up one more in the seventh. Only one of the two runs was earned.

The 24-year-old Darvish was undone by former major leaguer Matt Murton, who went 2-for-4 and drove in one of the two runs.

Tyler's continuing "improvement" means he's off the hook.  It's Joseph Casey Coleman time.

I think we need a thread to track Adam Dunn's historic run at having more strikeouts than batting average points in a full season.
