Here's the letter I sent to Bruce Miles:

Bruce:

First of all, I'd like to tell you how much I enjoy reading your pieces on the Cubs. You're the writer I can count on to tell it like it is...as a result, I believe you get more respect from online communities such as Desipio than any other writer.

I noticed this week's Sports Illustrated has a Cubs article. Before we go all "curse" here (a goat didn't kick the double play ball that would have ended the 8th inning in Game 6 - not an actual goat anyway), I was curious about something...

I keep seeing the name John Murray as the person who copyrighted the "It's Gonna Happen" phrase that is being pushed as the Cubs' slogan. It's never clear exactly what "it" is, and for us Cub fans, "it" is never a happy thing anyway. The article in SI credits him, and says he's a commodities trader. This isn't the same John Murray who was the commodities trader who attacked Randy Myers, is it?

I think it would be pretty ironic that someone who ran on the field to attack a Cub player would now try to profit off the team.

Well, anyway, keep up the good work, and guys like me will keep reading. Even if "it" involves the usual disappointment, or the unusual kind, that scatters our souls' ashes, this Cub team has been fun to watch and follow in the paper.

I like the smooth desipio shout-out.  Maybe you could try to insert something about the Red Sox font?  Better to get gramatically correct sloppy seconds than the "I'ts Our Turn" trainwreck.

I already sent it out. Please, feel free to turn it into a pile-on.
Bruce is the one guy who would probably do some research, and derail this whole thing before it gets too far out of hand.

Well, there is a John P. Murray who lists an address at 926 S. Spring in LaGrange who gave $600 to Durkin for U.S. Senate in 2002 and lists his occupation as a CBOT trader.

Just sayin'.

A Cook County Republican? And a contributor to a sound-alike candidate, to boot?

Ouch.

Durkin = Democrat
And is LaGrange Cook or DuPage?

Yes but no nearly as entertaining as 2004 when they thought they would confuse the voters by throwing up another black dude to go against Obama.

That Alan Motherfucking Keyes campaign was comedy gold.

I met Keyes when he was out campaigning at the Wheaton train station that year.  All I could think was if he had to campaign this hard in the DuPage County seat, he was completely fucked.

If memory serves, he got 10%.

Of a US Senate race.

With no incumbent.

Even the suburbs rejected him.  The only ones who liked him were the gun totin' downstaters who loved his talk on morality (despite his having a lesbian daughter and for, well, sounding like an uptight three-dollar queer himself if there ever was one).  Funny, because if these crackers opened their eyes, they'd have noticed that he was black and that their grandparents didn't take too kindly to his "kind".  What a world.

Following the developments of the Alan Keyes campaign day-in and day-out almost made fall of '04 bearable.

Obama a "hard-line Marxist"? Sure. Uzis in Wilmette? If it's the only way to keep our kids safe.

By far the best and most prescient gloss on the outcome of Keyes v. Obama, though, was this:

QuoteJohn: Hey, Bush is now at 37% approval. I feel much less like Kevin McCarthy screaming in traffic. But I wonder what his base is --

Tyrone: 27%.

John: ... you said that immmediately, and with some authority.

Tyrone: Obama vs. Alan Keyes. Keyes was from out of state, so you can eliminate any established political base; both candidates were black, so you can factor out racism; and Keyes was plainly, obviously, completely crazy. Batshit crazy. Head-trauma crazy. But 27% of the population of Illinois voted for him. They put party identification, personal prejudice, whatever ahead of rational judgement. Hell, even like 5% of Democrats voted for him. That's crazy behaviour. I think you have to assume a 27% Crazification Factor in any population.

John: Objectively crazy or crazy vis-a-vis my own inertial reference frame for rational behaviour? I mean, are you creating the Theory of Special Crazification or General Crazification?

Tyrone: Hadn't thought about it. Let's split the difference. Half just have worldviews which lead them to disagree with what you consider rationality even though they arrive at their positions through rational means, and the other half are the core of the Crazification -- either genuinely crazy; or so woefully misinformed about how the world works, the bases for their decision making is so flawed they may as well be crazy.

This was, of course, well before Bush's approval consistently bottomed out at around... 26-31%

The batshit crazy constituency.

Weird question, with an answer that I'm sure will make me feel dumb, but where on the si.com page do you find links to the print articles?  Can't find the link above anywhere on the MLB or the Cubs page on si.com, and it's not the first time I've seen links to print articles that I haven't been able to find on my own.

Wow, this is actually baseball related. I almost gave up on this thread after it devolved into a left-wing love fest.
