If you don't hear from me for a few days, it's because I just bought the Arrested Development DVDs of the first season.
Oh, how I love this show. Can't wait to relive the first season. In fact, I'm pretty sure I missed a few early ones along the way.
I got it for Christmas- i've already watched each one twice. The extended pilot is pretty good, with some unbleeped swears that catch you offguard at first.
Also, am I the only one worried about what the Martin Short character will do to the show if he stays on for an extended amount of time? They've taken some bigger names before (Liza, Elaine Benes) and have worked them in well. It appears to me that Short's "Jack Dorso" is a little too over the top and creepy to fit in with the show's understated wit.
"Oh Tobias, you blow hard!"
"Arrested Development" has done the unthinkable for me.
It's made me not hate Jason Bateman. Â In fact, I find him downright likeable.
What a good show.
Yeah I picked up the DVD's a while back and have watched them a bunch of times.
I really think Arrested Development might be the best show on television right now.
It also might be on it's last legs. It's production schedule I heard was cut from 22 episodes to like 16. Which is a pre-cursor to being canceled.
The reason's being that it is supposedly a hard show to sit down for 1 episode and understand what is going on. You need a few to get in the flow. And that it suffers from no lead in show that really compares with it. Like that has stopped Fox before, by putting trading spouses in front of "24", lol.
Disc 3, choose deleted scenes, select any episode, arrow over right to David Cross and hit enter. You won't be sorry. Or maybe you will.
Brilliant show. Love Ron Howard's narration...there was one episode where they even worked in an "Opie" joke...
I simply cannot get enough of Buster Bluth!
It is horrible that this show is on life support.

I think I heard something a little different. I heard it was getting scaled down to 16 episodes to make room for American Dad. Then again, it wouldn't suprise me to see Fox cancel a good show *cough* Family Guy *cough*

Winning the "Best Comedy" Emmy is all that saved this show's ass last year...
If Fox is dumb enough to cancel "Arrested Development" (the only funny non-cartoon they have left), you would think NBC would pick it up. They need good shows. Maybe they can make it Law and Order: San Quentin?

Fox will cancel it, and replace it with a 4th night of American Idol. Stupid bastards. I'm still bitter that they took "Andy Richter Controls the Universe" off the air. Pair that up with Arrested Development and you'd have the funniest hour of TV ever.
I thought "Greg The Bunny" was the goods.
I loved the shot Arrested Development took at Fox this week. That was classic.

This show is the most clever show on TV...I loved a couple weeks ago, when Henry Winkler jumped a shark...the second direct reference to his Fonzie days...the first was him stopping himself from combing his hair in a men's room...
Fellow NIU alum Dan Castellanetta played the "good doctor" last night. When he explained to Michael that his appendectomy went well but there was an infection he quietly said "D'oh."
Dan just happens to be the voice of Homer Simpson.
I just finished watching the DVDs from the first season, and the show is actually funnier the second time you see the episodes because they have so many hidden jokes and so many jokes that are only funny after you know what's going to happen.
For example in the current season, it starts with Buster being distraught that Lucille One has thrown out his "hand" chair, and he goes on and on after he gets it back about how much he'd hate to lose his "hand."
In the same show, a Fox News update in the background of a scene has the announcer reading about a "seal attack". It means nothing...until three shows later when Buster's taking his first ever swim in the ocean (fully clothed) and has his hand eaten by a seal. Which just happens to be wearing a bow tie...just like the one Gob kicked out of his act and threw into the ocean.
Just a great show.

OK, I have to admit, I have not seen even one eposode of AD. So after reading this line of
posts as well as seeing that the program manages to find it's way into other subjects, I decided
to rent the season. Went to my local blockbuster got the first volume of the first season and went
home. However, when I got there, I noticed that the discs for the third volume are in the case.
Can I start in the middle, or do I need to start at the beginning?
Thatnk for the upcoming input.....

I'd go back and start with season one. The shows are funny on their own, but are even more hilarious when watched in the context of the overall story arc.
Watch them in order. Every show is funny on its own, but it's funnier when you realize how many "extra" jokes are built up from previous references.

My wife works in advertising, and the Network group is operating under the assumption that it WILL be renewed, if only because it figures to get at least 5 Emmy nominations...
At the end of last night's epsiode they finished with, "On the next season of Arrested Development..." and then showed some previews.
This would have been big news, except on the DVDs of Season One, Mitch Hurwitz says that they did that at the end of season one and had no idea if there really was going to be a season two.
According to the message board at www.fox.com/arresteddev May 19 is decision day as to the renewal of our favorite show.

Actually you're the only one who's crying, but I did enjoy the music.
This Sunday, there was a sign at the Desperate Housewives protest that said "God doesn't care about ratings."

That's awesome. I can't wait for season 2 to come out on DVD.
I hope Fox learns from what they found out with 24 this year. They are running 24 in 24 consecutive weeks and the ratings have never been higher, even though it doesn't have it's old American Idol lead in.
With a show like Arrested where the jokes build from one show to the next Fox needs to pick a time slot and leave it (which, to its credit it did this year behind The Simpsons), but don't take it off for two or three weeks at a time. It's easy to get lost.
I also, can't wait for the Season Two DVDs, which I think I read are due out in September.
They are going to run season two again this summer, too.
Does the show pick up as it moves along? I just finished Season 1, Disc 1. Eps 1-6. They strike me as "Curb Lite." Funny, but not as bitingly nasty. And the GOB whistling teeth was just unfunny (outside of when he dressed up as a delivery man).
It's good, but not great so far. Perhaps because they were feelign their way around, it hadn't kicked in high gear yet?
Am I right, or is the show just missing me?

I'd say watch the first season all the way through before forming an opinion. The humor builds off of each episode as Andy mentioned.

QuoteSee Chuck, you're not in the demo they're going for with the Hebe humor. They're looking for guys like me who don't understand it and just laugh.
See, now they do an ep like "Public Relations" and they start to hook me.
Jessie: Your father's religious now? We'll play that up. It's very sympathetic.
Lucille: Yeah. Who doesn't love the Jews?
Jessie: Daddy lost his shot at happy and it's all your fault, Opie.
Narrator: Jessie had gone too far and she had best watch her mouth.
Waitress: Plate or platter?
Lucille: I don't understand the question, and I won't respond to it.
GOB: He was very quiet in there (referring to Earl Milford)
Now, that's good stuff. The "Next on" was the only week point. Of course Earl was gonna be dead.
Buster: I'm not sure what it is you do
Jessie: Good question, a publicist...
Buster: No, I meant George Michael. When did you get a job?
George Michael: At the banana stand.
Buster: Oh! I thought you meant like a plumber or something! and I was like 'when did that happen?'
You'll notice that "Next on...Arrested Development" rarely ever is really on the next one.
Banana Grabber!

...and for the record, it's Arrested Development season 2...for those who are counting.
They're re-running season two in it's entirety on Fridays the rest of the summer, the first four, yes four, episodes kick it off tomorrow night, then it'll be one or two a week until September 19 when it moves to it's new slot on Mondays and season three debuts.

Tom Bosley and Marion Ross will appear in an episode this year playing the narrator's mother and father. Andy Griffith is pissed.
I'll be the first to say (and maybe the only) that I loved the Mad Money bit at the beginning. Watching Jim Cramer on his show is like watching a lunatic in an asylum. It's hard to believe a guy can work up a sweat talking about stocks, but he does it.
The more I watch "Arrested Development" the more I think that Gob Bluth is the greatest character in television history. Last night was friggin' hilarious when he ditched out on the kid once he realized that the kid was his.

I'd say GOB cemented his status with the "taste my sad, Michael" and "taste the happy" bit.
I just made $50. Don't tell anyone.

I can't even remember the exact lines, but my wife was nearly in tears over the scene near the beginning where Michael and Lucille are talking about how she should take a date up to the cabin and she says: "oh please, nobody wants to go near that musty old claptrap" followed by the long pause and Michael's "oh, you mean the cabin".
What about Tobias' gig at the restaurant/hand-job emporium? Can't remember all of the lines from that scene, but I do recall there being some solid ones. Little help?
Kitty: Say goodbye to these.
Tobias: They've got blue paint on them too!
Tobias: After lunch they replace the salad bar with a leather pony... not sure what they use it for though.
I liked how Kitty had a blue hand print on the top of her head.
Good one at the office when Michael was talking to his sister. She had been sitting on the copier making copies of, among other things a car brochure she was looking at. And she's just found out the stock has been upgraded from triple sell to don't buy.
Lindsey: We did it Michael! We're super rich again. I'm going to buy a car! A Volvo.
Michael: Lindsey, you're not going to start spending money, and this is not a Volv-O.
Lindsey: Oh that's from sitting on the copier.
.... later on
Michael: Glad i didnt spring for the color printer..
I also liked this moment, when George Michael wakes up in the stair car only to find that his dad is taking him away from Maeby in Reno who had promised him the other half of his kiss and off to the cabin.
Michael: I almost had Pop-pop in Reno.
George Michael: Me too.
Earlier we had...
Michael: Why don't you take your cousin out front and pop a tent?
Then...I loved George Michael trying to explain to Maeby that he couldn't get up and leave the stair car after their kiss was interrupted by Lindsey because he wanted to "watch that famous Reno sunset."
Maeby: The sun's setting behind you.
GM: I'll use the mirrors.
Also a nice touch is that Henry Winkler is leaving the show to go to one on CBS (also Monday night--looks bad) and so they fired Barry Zuckercorn as their lawyer, only to replace him next week with...a lawyer played by Scott Baio. Who else can you replace the Fonz with, but Chachi?

Buehrle.
Andy that's fanatstic, BTW. How did you find that close up?
I like how Gob is an acronym for George Oscar Blum.
Not to be blasphemous, but "AD" seems to have as many, if not more, secondary jokes crammed in all over the place as "The Simpsons".
Sit on it. Classic.
Found those over at www.the-op.com
I liked the line, "While in high school, Gob had intimate relations with six girls (they highlight six photos), three of whom became pregnant (un-highlight three), one had a baby (only Eve Holt! is highlighted.)
And on the letter from SAD, the address of the father-son "rally" is at the corner of Hyde and No. Hope.
How about the "Mission:Accomplished" banner?
This season may turn out to be the best yet. I have laughed more at these first two episodes than any sitcom since Seinfeld. The Wee Britain angle is gold. Any fan had to like the return of the chicken jokes, especially when George, Lucille, Tobais and Lindsay were doing it at once.
Scott Baio: "The others aren't making sense. I'm Bob Loblaw."
Ron Howard: "Believe me, no one is making fun of Andy Griffith."
Michael: "More touching!"
Michael: "You'll get live ins."
Women's clothing store clerk: "Are you going to buy this time, or are you just curious, again?"
Tobias: "Let's say I'm buy curious."
Tobias: "I can just taste the meaty leading man parts."
Tremendous effort again.
Lindsay: "Did you get me the Lexus?"
Michael: "It's more like a Lincoln."
George Michael: "It's just a stupid girl problem."
Michael: "I don't even have a stupid girl, yet."
George Michael: "Don't worry, it's just stupid."
Ron Howard: "And the kids would be too, the stupid girl problem is with his cousin, Maeby."
I liked when Dave Thomas said to Michael "How would you like it if somebody came after one of your stupid relatives?"
And Michael immediately assumed he meant Gob. When really it's Dave trying to protect his sister (Charlize Theron) who is obviously a pre-school student, not the teacher.
The Jack the Ripper lines when talking to her for the first time was good stuff.
I think we need some more Arrested Development avatars.

Good news for Arrested Development. Fox is allegedly going to announce after the baseball playoffs that Arrested and Kitchen Confidential are moving to Fridays at 8 and 8:30 respectively. This is good news because my TiVo doesn't care when Arrested is on, and Fox gets crap ratings on Fridays so parking Arrested there will probably insure an entire third season. Fox wants it to finish the season because the pre-orders for the season two DVDs have outsold even Desperate Housewives.

As long as Fox is making money off the show somehow, it'll stay. Family Guy only came back so they could sell more DVD's, too.
I find it interesting that a mediocre baseball player like Eric Karros got more shit for making $10 million for a season than Jean Claude Van Damme did for making the same amount for a movie.
There's a reason movie tickets cost $8, $12 or even $14 a movie, and the ludicrous amount of money our addle-brained movie stars make is right up there.

Well, ticket prices are set to maximize profits, not by the cost of the films.
That said, you are correct that Julia Roberts's salary compared to Derek Jeter should be considered the same: They are entertainers.
Once you see that, it's hard to see how steroids are any diffferent than plastic surgery. They enhance the entertainment value while not taking away from the nature of the performance (unscripted vs. scripted).
TV is usually my bane, but you morans goaded me into checking out the pilot and second episode of Arrested Development. Â Naturally, I fell head over heels after watching and made it a point to scout out this week's episode (which I didn't catch much of, but did see the gold spot referenced by MrSpeed). Â
I then caught wind that David Cross was going to be on Carson Daly's chatterbox. Â It was last night and, uh, yeah, anyone else see that? Â He had George Michael and Maeby with him, didn't answer but one or two questions from Carson, and was heard shouting from backstage during the rest of the show, all while the kids were still on the set. Â Mr. Daly seemed genuinely pissed, and it was altogether pretty weird.
David Cross is comedy genius. Him and Bob Odenkirk's "Mr. Show" from back in the day was like crack.
Carson Daley deserves to be tortured by Vietnamese Police.

Ticket prices aren't sent to maximize profits in baseball? I agree that there's more than just the cost of the actors (athletes) that goes into the price, but in both cases it's the biggest reason.

I thought last nights show was hillarious. Between the "analrapist" and "SH: I won't forget this ... dad. GB: I will. <pop roofie>", I was about to wet myself. This show gets better with each episode.Â
"Tobias just finished analraping me"...I said it before, they're swinging for the fences...
Just a heads-up that its finally back on tv tonight. Catch it while you still can.

Fans of Arrested Development might find this new internet show amusing (I sure did):

I think Cera might have been the best, most nuanced, most dynamic actor on the show. Able to convey about 892 emotions without saying a word, and suppress each and every one of them almost instantly.

After watching episode three -- why didn't Hurwitz ever act? As quick and as funny as wits come. And they come!

STEVE HOLT!
One of my favorite Gob/Steve Holt exchanges:
STEVE HOLT: I'll never forget this, Dad.
Steve Holt walks away.
GOB: I will, son.
Gob pops a forget-me-now into his mouth and begins crying.
GOB: I will.
Chuck will now point out how "telegraphed" that exchange was.
I think it's even better when they're talking about the kid who found the severed hand and brought it to his dad. Classic.

Just got through season 1 on Hulu. I can't believe I didn't watch this on it's original run. I couldn't help but think that the show intro didn't do it any favors in drawing in new viewers. It's hard to tell what the show is about. Same for the title. If you weren't already watching, it doesn't make a lot of sense.
Great show though.

Has anyone heard of this potential new Fox cartoon. It looks like it could be good, and I have hope that it will be good (but, then again, being a Cubs fan, hope comes easy). The guy that worked on this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUwMjRBBnLw) awesome show is on for it. And Hurwitz will bring along Bateman, Arnett and Winkler; so, it will probably be worth a watch just to hear some fresh banter between them, for old time's sake. I also find it quite benevolent of Mitch, and the rest of them, to work with Fox again; though, I'm sure Cross won't be, any time soon.

Isn't one of the SHOWTIME channels going to do an "Arrested Development" marathon? Or did I miss it?
IFC shows back-to-back episodes on Thurs nights (they may have already done a marathon) and you can watch some full episodes for free on Hulu.
http://www.hulu.com/arrested-development (http://www.hulu.com/arrested-development)
Barring that, you can find it for sale for less than $20 a season, which is well worth it considering the repeat value of the show.

http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/10/02/mitchell-hurwitz-promises-an-arrested-development-movie-and-new-tv-episodes/
QuoteOn Sunday afternoon, Mr. Hurwitz tossed a few more crumbs to the "Arrested Development" faithful at a New Yorker Festival event that reunited him with the show's ensemble cast, telling the audience that a movie was still in the works, along with a new set of television episodes that would serve as a prelude to the film.
Asked by the event's moderator, Nancy Franklin, for an update on the movie, Mr. Hurwitz said, "We're 80 percent of the way to an answer," which was understandably greeted by some laughter.
Mr. Hurwitz went on to say that he and Ron Howard, the director and producer who was the "Arrested Development" narrator, "had been talking about this for ages and trying to get this going."
Mr. Hurwitz continued: "We don't completely own the property, there are business people involved and studios and that kind of thing. Just creatively, I have been working on the screenplay for a long time and found that as time went by, there was so much more to the story. In fact, where everyone's been for five years became a big part of the story. So in working on the screenplay, I found even if I just gave five minutes per character to that back story, we were halfway through the movie before the characters got together."
So, Mr. Hurwitz said: "We're trying to do a limited-run series into the movie." After a wave of excited applause died down, he continued: "We're basically hoping to do 9 or 10 episodes, with almost one character per episode."
...
By way of apology, Mr. Hurwitz also said that while he and the "Arrested Development" team had intimated in the past that the movie wasn't coming together because Mr. Cera – who has since been propelled into leading roles in films like "Superbad" and "Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World" – was standing in the way, this had all been an inside joke gone wrong.
"I kind of was perpetuating a little thing, like, wouldn't it be funny if Michael Cera was the holdout. Let's put that out there. And Michael had that Andy Kaufman thing. And then it really turned ugly, quickly. So I really just have to say, for those of you that have been following this saga, Michael's always been great."

"Show Stealer Pro Trial Version" is still amusing me even eight episodes in.
I guess this is the sort of joke you miss went you torrent.
And there I thought the uploader was just some sort of cheapskate.
I don't torrent, still found it funny. Like they couldn't get the archive footage from Fox without ripping it. Also: The whole went?

What the heck is "Showstealer Pro Trial Version" and why does it keep showing up as a watermark in the middle of the screen when I'm watch the new season of Arrested Development? It's super annoying and I don't want to watch anymore.

I'm not quite halfway through yet but I can't believe how long it took me to catch the double meaning of DeBrie.
I still can't get over how good Portia di Rossi looks, either with the short hair or the red hair.

I didn't notice this initially either, but the dumpster helped me out; much like the giant "HER?" in the church during one of the GOB episodes.

Alia Shawkat. How someone could go from dating her to dating Lena Dunham boggles the mind, but that's what Jack Antonoff (bespectacled guitarist from Fun) has done. Before Alia he dated ... Scarlett Johansson. Can't wait to see who's next.

From what I've read and heard (mostly from HuffPo and shit like that), that thing in the yellow sack is the modern embodiment of feminism and the platonic ideal of beauty, all because she has an edgy show on HBO or something.
Personally, she looks hideous to me and her show sounds like a whiny, hipster, female-take on life in New York City.

Funniest joke of the season in my opinion, and one that I initially didn't see:

Also: I just got up to that episode last night.
By far the best of the season to that point.
I'm only two episodes in but the entire bit in the 1st episode about the vote to kick a roommate out of the dorm room was amazing.
"I was mistakenly voted out of a four-person housing situation in a 'pack first, no talking after' scenario."
DPD. The Tobias episode was a huge disappointment. The show is so much better when you've got multiple Bluths interacting. Hopefully the next George Sr. episode isn't as lame as the 1st one.
I watched the first episode after re-watching the first season. In the first season Michael Bluth was presented at first as the stable, sane, voice of reason in the Bluth family. As the season progressed he started to wear down and acted bitchy toward his siblings, but he was clearly beginning to come apart. In the first episode of the new season he shows signs of being divorced from reality, which puts an entirely different spin on the show, but allows Bateman more opportunity for comedy than he had as the exasperated "everyman" in the original series.

He was always pretty clueless in the original series, too, particularly when it came to his relationship with George Michael. It just took a bit of time for his facade to unwind.
And, yeah, in the new season his cluelessness is amped up to 11. But his life has also totally bottomed out in every other way, too, so there's some bit of logic to the arc.

So we've been slowly slogging our way through this and I was extremely disappointed in the first 9 episodes or so. Since then though, this thing's been picking up and been really good. The GOB/Tony Wonder mask bit was outstanding. Now I'm having a sad that there are only a couple to go.

So, serious question...
What possesses someone to continue to watch a show after 9 bad episodes?
Was it so good previously that it deserves that significant of a benefit of the doubt?

bad. They just weren't up to the standards and expectations set by the first three seasons.

Did anyone really think that any of it was "bad"? I admit that some were better than others, but I didn't think that any were bad. I liked the way that each episode was devoted to a different family member. I didn't enjoy the Gob episodes as much as those that featured David Cross and Portia DeRossi. I liked the way that they covered the same situations from different viewpoints. (At least I think that she was Portia DeRossi. They may have hired someone to play her.) I also liked the inside jokes in all of the episodes. The reprise was cleverly done in my opinion, but I am still trying to figure out the significance of the sweat lodge.

Did anyone really think that any of it was "bad"? I admit that some were better than others, but I didn't think that any were bad. I watched it slowly and didn't think it was remotely bad. I thought it was really good.
I hope they do another.

I think Thrill's point stands. I wouldn't say that the first half of the new season was bad in any way. They were just completely different from what we had come to expect. And this makes sense, in an odd way.
The show was off the air for six years. In the interregnum between then and now, this show was immortalized and idolized (deservedly so, I might add) in ways that few others shows have been. Several of its recurring jokes have entered the mainstream and become popular, along with most of its characters. When the show came back, most felt that it would naturally flow from that.
But it couldn't, and no show could. So when the show took this new tack, people felt that it was bad, or slow, or not quite the Arrested Development that everyone had come to expect. Hence the tepid reviews from many.
If you view the show (or at least the first 9 episodes or so) as a kind of sequel to Arrested Development, then it kind of makes sense, but it falls back into the standard zaniness that the fans have come to expect when all the divergent plot lines come together towards the end of the season.
I'm hopeful that they will be able to do another season, or at least a movie, because now the show has gotten the previous 6 years of stories and plot lines out of the way and has caught up to the characters in the present day, i.e., the Cinco party (we only see snippets of time from two to three days after the party).

QuoteArrested Development will be back – either as another series or as a movie – creator Mitch Hurwitz has confirmed.
When asked during a Q&A session at the Just For Laughs comedy festival in Montreal if the show would be returning, Hurwitz said baldly: 'Definitely.'
Then, turning to Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos, he said: 'I don't want to get into a whole negotiation right now... but I've got a family to feed.'
He added: 'I keep thinking about it, and why don't we do the movie version of this and then do the series, because this series kinda peaks with the story?
'I kinda go back and forth between that and a series. But here's the most important thing, whatever we do, I want to get the cast all together and not do another anthology thing, and that's why I keep thinking about kicking off with a special or a three-part show and then going into a series.
Then he asked Sarandos: 'Are you game for that?'.
'Absolutely,' the Netflix boss replied. 'In any form.'

QuoteHe also discussed how Alexei Sayle was mistreated by the Hollywood machine, after being signed up to reprise the Eastern European persona he had employed as the landlord in The Young Ones for the 1992 Golden Girls spin-off Golden Palace.
Hurwitz, who was a writer on the series, told how executives fired Sayle before the pilot had been shot.
'Everyone just decided, as they do when there's a lot of executives, "He can't do it, he's not funny. We gotta fire him."
'So he's fired. And then we shoot the pilot. And he storms it like crazy. The crowd loves him; he gets a standing ovation at the curtain call, but he's got fired.'
The network then got Cheech Marin, of Cheech and Chong fame, to step into the 'funny foreigner' role. But when he got on set he refused to do the comedy Mexican accent he employed in his stoner double-act, telling them: 'Oh no, I don't do that any more.'
The sitcom got cancelled after one season.

Sayle was also on a show called "Selling Hitler". No word on whether punching was involved.
