Title: Friday Night Lights
Post by: Neifilicious on October 03, 2006, 03:48:09 PM
...Because the world definitely needs plenty of TV shows based on football.   God knows it's better than watching the Yank-mes.

Begins tonight at 7:00 cst on NBC.

I haven't seen Connie Britton in anything lately, but I seem to recall she has a pretty nice rack.

I thought it was tremendous.

Both the show, and Connie's rack.

Seriously, I was ready to be underwhelmed by the show, but I thought it was great.  I'm not sure how they drag it out over 22 weeks, but what the hell?  It's better than most of the crap on TV these days.  If you didn't watch it last night, it's on again tonight.  Watch it and then we can discuss how James VanderBeek should have been cast as the backup QB.

I'm still amazed they ever found a helmet to fit him. I think he's John Tesh's long-lost son.

Anybody know what the status of this show is?  They moved it from the Tuesday night 7:00 CST slot to last night at 9:00 CST against MNF.  Are they playing around with the time slot because it's not getting the ratings NBC had hoped?  I hope it's not already on it's last leg, after 4 weeks or so.  This is the only show this fall that I actually make a point to watch (Connie Britton's rack might have something to do with that).

They didn't move it.  That was just an extra episode thrown in.  The usual one is on tonight.

Aybody still watching this show?  Is it just me, or was that last episode weak?

How about now?  Is anyone still watching this?  I haven't watched yesterday's episode yet, but I think this has turned into my favorite of the new shows, even if it's a total soap opera.

Yeah, I'm still watching it.  It's the only one of the new shows that I watch (I kind of missed the boat on the others).

As a selling point to get more people interested in watching it - I've read it's still on the ropes - they try to make each episode have it's own story line that gets people involved if they've never seen an episode before, with some underlying themes that continue from episode to episode.  Although that helped get my girlfriend into it about a month or two into the season, getting her beyond "It's a stupid football show" (with smoking hot girls), I think I've become hooked onto shows that really string out story lines, going a little deeper a la HBO, and wish that FNL could do this.  Unfortunately I don't see them having the resources (broadcast TV being different then cable) to do so, but it would be cool if they could.

I do enjoy the scenes with the coach and his wife though.  They have some humorous interactions.

When you get around to watching last night's episode, let me know if you noticed a difference in the picture.  I thought it looked a little different, almost grainier.

The interaction between the coach and his wife is great.  She's a perfect foil for him.  Also, the guy who plays Saracen really does a hell of a job playing an insecure high school kid.  And I love his buddy who looks like a cross between Pigman and Matt Damon.  That guy's great.

Connie Britton gets better looking every week.

The show is still tremendous, even when the plots get ludicrous (like the three episode Smash steroids thing).  The characters are great, and I just like looking at Lyla and Tyra.

Oh, and Mrs. Stanwyck, who is aging pretty well, and can still throw a punch.

Just put it on the Underhills tab.

She'll always have a place in my heart as the morphine addict from Tombstone, as well.

And Connie Britton is scathing hot in this show.  Pretty much every female is.  Hell, even Saracen's grandma could probably have gotten the job done back in the day.

The scene when he (Saracen's buddy) was sining in his metal Christian band was priceless.  I agree that guy is hilarious.

I think I heard somewhere that the kid who plays Saracen is from Evanston.

You heard correctly, apparently.

While I was over at the old IMDB, I also looked up his buddy's name.  Landry.  I don't know why I couldn't remember that.  It's a perfect name for him.  I loved the scenes when he was tutoring Riggins (from the episode you mentioned).

I think they got better and better.  Last night's season finale was outstanding.

This is the best new show on television.  There, I said it.

Riggins is a pimp, but a terrible, terrible comedian.  Landry is going to get on Tyra.  The cripple is going to choose that pig-faced tattoo artist over Lyla.  Coach Taylor is going to have to choose between TMU and his smoking hot wife and fetus.  Bipolar chick is going to kill Smash.  Voo-Doo Tatum can go eat a dick.  Buddy Garrity is a bastard.  QB1 blossomed under Quad Rugby's tutelage.

I positive this show.  I positive it very much.

I don't watch it, but I know many here do.

http://tvdecoder.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/04/02/live-from-nbcs-infront-take-6-new-deal-for-friday-night-lights/

QuoteConfirming rumors that had swirled for weeks, NBC said on Wednesday that it had partnered with the satellite television provider DirecTV to keep the football drama "Friday Night Lights" on television.

...

But viewers without access to DirecTV will have to wait a while. The third season of the series, set in a small Texas town, will be shown on DirecTV's platform beginning on October 1. NBC will delay broadcasting the same episodes until the winter, months after satellite subscribers have seen them.

Mr. Silverman said the partnership with DirecTV was a demonstration of "managing for margin" rather than merely for ratings. If the broadcast ratings for "Friday Night Lights" decline 15 percent next season, he said, the network will still come out ahead because of the cost-sharing arrangement.

This show is the balls.  It has everything.  And it's commercial free now too, so that's even more too much good stuff.  Tyra is bringing the goods, Lyla is too (as always), but the coaches daughter is going to move ahead of them all shortly I have a feeling.  Thru two episodes this season I give it 9 thumbs up.

I made it through Season 2 this weekend.  It wasn't as bad as I had expected it to be, as long as you don't mind that it's the same thing happening over and over.  The dynamic between Coach and Mrs. Taylor is awesome.  I chortled when he said, "Don't whisper-yell at me."  And I almost stood up and cheered when Landry punched that smarmy rival QB in his smug face.  After a rocky start to the second season, I'm glad they righted the ship.  I'm looking forward to watching Season 3 a year after all you guys have.

This show brings the high stinky cheddar every single week.  Next week is the season finale.  Watching it commercial free is outstanding.  It'll start soon for you losers without DirecTV.  I think maybe even next week.

Tyra is ridonkulous.  Coach's wife's hogans were all over the joint tonight.  The daughter's booblies are INSANE.  In the membrane.  Great show.  Enjoy it on NBC with commercials fellas.

1.  Coach's Daughter
2.  Lyla
3.  Coach's Wife
4.  Tyra

Where have you gone, Tyra?  You're not bringing it as much as you used to.

Julie Taylor's rack is fucking incredible. I think she has to strap them down to make her character more believable. I bet they're even bigger in real life.

Extra points for her - I worked with a girl named Julie Taylor in high school at the Lincolnshire Marriott pool. She was on the dance team at Kentucky. So hot. She even talked to me sometimes.

Actually I think it was because of the writers' strike. But yeah, they weren't planning to end it with that episode. You've got season 3 to look forward to which (at least through 5 episodes) is really good.

If one of these characters was eventually going to yell, "I don't want your life!" it was going to be him.  Or maybe J.D. McCoy.  Plus, now Riggins will have more time to nail every piece of tail in Dillon.  I love how he never goes to practice.

Yes, I'm caught up and yes this show is steak bulbs.

That's great news. I'm not ashamed to admit that I got a little choked up like Riggins did at the end of the last episode.

Coach needing aspirin for his arm and Riggins saying "I'm pregnant" were outstanding.

Coach's scene with Saracen was absolute steak balls.  And I'm really glad that Six is gone.  Drama Queen.

You heartless bastard.

If one of these characters was eventually going to yell, "I don't want your life!" it was going to be him.  Or maybe J.D. McCoy.  Plus, now Riggins will have more time to nail every piece of tail in Dillon.  I love how he never goes to practice.

Wait until it all escalates in the parking lot of the Tastee-Freeze or whatever it is they have in Dillon.

Even though some of the people graduated, they're not going anywhere.  I really wish that you guys had DirecTV.  Next year, slumber party at my house when FNL is on commercial free?

Anyone else irritated at the "announcer" blowing Aikman after Coach Taylor got ejected because they happened to win the game? Seemed too easy. I know they have to create drama, but that was annoying.

Hated that part.  Beside the boobs, Coach and Riggins are the heart of the show.  What I do love is Coach's expressions.  When Seracen goes to his house to take Bewbs to the "movies," Mrs. Coach tells him to go out back with Coach while she goes gets Bewbs.  Saracen's face is priceless.  Even more priceless is Coach's frantic srubbing of the BBQ pit.  The man is panting he's so incensed.  But, there's something about Saracen that he knows is okay so he can't be too mad.  Also of note...Coach's hair is always crazy.  It's always strewn about, like he's so stressed out.

And, I like the J. D. kid.  His dad deserves a Weed Wacker to the groin, though.  Dad McCoy totally dadcockblocked him from getting with that redhead from heaven...Madison or Mercedes or MyGordShe'sHot.  Had my dad tried that shit on me, he would have gotten a Nike to the eardrum.  Now way I'm passing that up for State.  Mom McCoy freaked me the hell out at first, but she's turning out to be okay, too.

Yeah Mama Mccoy is turning out to be an okay broad. And she doesn't mind exposing her funjammers so that's nice.

I'm torn on whether or not they should continue the show after this season...on the one hand, Coach/Mrs. Taylor/Buddy are great characters and could probably justify a show just by themselves. On the other, although JD has some potential, it's going to be tough to replace characters like Riggins, Saracen and Landry.

I'm enjoying the hell out of this season though. I liked Coach's calm walk to the bar across the street from the stadium, letting us know that him going apeshit on the officials was all part of the plan.

Though it was part of the plan, if I was an overreacting announcer douchebag (instead I just overreact) I would have gone nuts talking about how Coach Taylor's ejection fired up the team and propelled them to victory instead of saying that we have a new coaching star in Coach Aikman. I haven't trusted Aikman since he showed up and I never will.

That said if this show gets the rumored two year extension you still have Bewbies Taylor for at least one more season and JD. We don't know if Saracen is definitely going to college, do we?  Riggins is going for now, but who knows if that comes to fruition. Lyla is apparently fucked. Tyra isn't going anywhere, she's a Dillon lifer. Landry is going to be a movie star/rock star/inventor of something awesome that everyone will love.

They need to introduce and develop a couple more young players who can stick around for a couple years.

I'm enjoying the hell out of this season though. I liked Coach's calm walk to the bar across the street from the stadium, letting us know that him going apeshit on the officials was all part of the plan.

And after they won, when he said, "You got whiskey in here?"

So it's been renewed for 2 more years. Fucking awesome.

I also went ahead and torrented the rest of the season and now I'm done. Goddamn it - I wish that these actors were slaves and they had to make a show every day while I was at work so I could watch it when I got home.

It just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.

Looking forward to discussing the ending of season three. It's a doozy. I love the set up.

Anybody else love Coach's expressions?  Like, in the opening scene when he's trying to find the creamer for his coffee and Mrs. Coach says that they're out, but he can taste her's..."It's real good."  (Mrs. Coach sips coffee).  Coach looks at her like he's going to dropkick her in the shoulderblade.  And, when he's talking with Buddy at the dealership about the redistricting...he looks bewildered.  And, when Mrs. Coach is asking him about the redistricting, again...bewilderment.  His expressions crack me and the missus up constantly.

Oh, and it looks like we can add Madison to the list of irresistable broads on the show.  Day-um.

J. D. McCoy's dad is a douchemissilerocketbazookaclaymoreminebouncingbetty wrapped in turd fabric covered in a cloak of suck.  I really hate that guy.

Kyle Chandler is absolutely terrific in that role.  And did anyone else get a little teary-eyed when Mrs. Wyatt Earp told smoking hot Tyra how awesome she is?  No?  Just me?  Well, I'd been drinking, so screw you all.

Coach Taylor needs to bust McCoy in his face.  And little McCoy needs to bust something else in Madison's face.  Like a NUT.  Right, guys?

Like, when she was running to get the door at the beginning of the bridal shower?  My eyes hurt after that, but in a good way.  After her little jog to the front door, the wife and I, in tandem (heh), let out an audible "Holy shit!"

I didn't know this.  Is this brand new news?  I don't like this at all, but mainly because looking at those two is loads of fun.  Fortunately for the show, it's main draw is Coach's awesomeness and Riggins', well awesomeness.  And, Mrs. Coach's and Daughter Coach's hogans.

Me, too.  I had to look it up, and I noticed she was also in the astonishingly awful Hollow Man.  But she got her boobs frotteurized by invisible Kevin Bacon in that one.  I'm not suggesting she's the hottest one on that show by any means.  But if she didn't have Oklahoma hair, she'd be pretty cute.

Just watched the episode from this week.  Anybody thought it wasn't their best effort?  Coach's whole "you are all champions" speech was weak and unlike him I thought.  Also, I couldn't watch the Lance Landry/Tyra kiss.  It was awful, awful.  I also couldn't stand J. D.'s wambulancing on the field.  That was some bad acting.

The locker-room speech scene resonated with me... my h.s. football career ended in a state playoff game with a similarly soul-crushing ending and my coach, one of the biggest ball-busters on earth, delivered a post-game speech in much the same vein.

And while I grant that the Landry/Tyra love story is a stretch (a number of hot girls eventually realize that hot guys who treat them like crap are no longer the way to go, but they typically don't realize it before their late 20s, not high school), but Landry's my favorite character on the show, so what the hell.

Agree totally on J.D.'s overacting. Yeesh. I don't care how talented the QB is, in real life there's no way some senior lineman wouldn't respond to his ranting with a "shut the hell up, freshman."

Any thoughts on the season finale? I enjoyed it even with all the "willful suspension of disbelief" moments (i.e., a Texas town runs out a popular head coach who has won a state title and appeared in another state finals game in three years over the tantrum of a prima donna freshman's Dad -- a freshman who crapped the bed in the state finals loss, no less; a girl who had no realistic shot at *any* college a few months earlier somehow gets admitted to UT-Austin on the wait list without having to spend at least a year at the local branch campus or junior college; Taylor takes the East Dillon building-from-scratch gig instead of going to any number of area powerhouses that would snap up a coach with his record in a heartbeat, etc.)

It's a testament to how good this show is that all that stuff - which would kill a lesser drama - seems like minor quibbles.

As far the East Dillon coaching job acceptance, I think that one can be explained with coach and Mrs. Taylor very settled in, not wanting to move their daughter around before she graduates, etc.

Anyway, this show started off in season one with strictly last minute touchdowns that won games. So I pretty much just swallow everything they feed me.

Very true. The Dillon Panthers have easily set a world record for last-second victories/losses over the past three seasons. In real life, any "football powerhouse" school good enough to go to two state championship games in three years tends to obliterate 90+ percent of their regular-season competition as well as their early-round playoff opponents, before finally, maybe, being challenged in the later rounds. Even in Texas.

Still doesn't matter to me when I watch the show.

I just watched the season finale and liked how it tied up the stories, but, yes, it was fantastically unrealistic for all the reasons already mentioned.  And you didn't even mention the fact that Saracen gave up on the Art Institute because of his "gramma" and Julie Taylor's gigantic boobs.  Well, okay, I guess that was realistic.

The show is still terrific, though.  Is there any better way to get bad news than from Tami Taylor while her funbags are hanging out of her dress?

Julie Taylor is AWESOME.

There are some excellent possibilities for next season though. Do Dillon players defect to East Dillon? Does Buddy go with Coach Taylor or does he stick with the school he grew up loving? Does Coach Taylor face off with Joe McCoy in a steel cage match? Do Lyla and Tyra say goodbye to Dillon by having a marathon scissor session?

Please let this happen, while Julie Taylor does topless jumping jacks in the background.

I suspect next season's "big game" is East Dillon vs. Dillon to go to state.  I sure hope East Dillon's mascot is the Duck.  Because I know how much impact a coach can have on a lovable ragtag group of down-and-out Ducks.  It'll be the feel-good story of the season.

Too bad the stadium said "East Dillon Lions."

Also, I expect 2 games between the two teams... One in the regular season where Dillon runs over East Dillon. Then sometime in the playoffs (don't know if they'd do state championship because I would assume they'd be "bracketed" to see each other before then) where E. Dillon pulls off a miraculous comeback victory.

Starting up a new program at a new school will also allow the show to introduce a slew of new characters - to address the issue of how to replace those who are graduating to college.  With the ones that remain, what happens?  Does Saracen become an assistant coach at East Dillion High? etc.

2 more seasons of Julie Taylor makes me very happy.  I love the possibilties of this show, with rotating in new characters as older ones graduate.  Just like Dazed and Confused from a viewing audience standpoint...I keep watching, and the girls on the show stay the saaaaaame age.

That's the point I was going to make.  The two year extension gives the producers a chance to introduce a whole new cast of football players, but they have to be careful.  It worked for the first cast.  Can they continue to make quality stories and find good acting like they did once Street and Smash left?

Things that were awesome about this episode:  Buddy (as his real-life personna) doing a Chevy commercial before the show started, Lyla in a bathing suit and ponytail in the opening, and Mrs. Coach's sweater biscuits as she delivers the Wade Aikman news upon Coach.  I sincerely hope they rename East Dillon after the giraffes.

I think this might be the best season of them all.  Only 2 more episodes left.  Not really sure what all they're going to do with everybody yet, though.  The football scenes are even more unrealistic.

They keep on teasing the shit out of what they're doing with the Taylors..And yea, the football scenes are meh but who cares. I know I can't complain.

I was downloading them from a torrent but got a finger-wag from Xfinity for downloading copyrighted content. Guess I'll be waiting for the NBC airings.

Not all of the links work, but I've found luck in finding one of the sites to have the show available to watch: http://www.tvduck.com/Friday-Night-Lights.html

Only one more episode left.  I don't know why they have to cancel this show, but Outsourced is still on.  What is up with that?  I don't know what the Taylors are going to do, but I want to go with them wherever they are.  And Tyra is hot, but not nearly as hot as the Coach's slut daughter with her big hogans

I've been watching this show on the Netflix.  Holee crap, it's outstanding.  The second season was kind of a downer, but it's all been steaktitsauce.  I'm on the second episode of the 4th season.  Think I'm a loser for finding this too late?  Guess again.  I've spent the past 2 months watching it straight through and I've got the final season DVR'd, so I don't have to wait for anything.  In your face.  I'm awsesome!

I just finished watching the episode with Matt's Dad's funeral.  That was a good episode.  The kid that played Matt done good.  He done real good.

Sorry to interrupt this JD-cast, but I'm sad this show is over.  I will miss you, Coach Taylor.  What a badass character (even though he bitched out in the end after building up all that manliness and fortitude for five years, then undercutting it with the Jenga block of doom by going to Philly with Mrs. Coach--but I guess she's making bank so it's okay).

Clear eyes, full hearts...can't lose.

I love you, Connie.
