Title: Fringe
Post by: Weebs on September 09, 2008, 11:41:27 PM
Anybody else catch the premiere tonight?  It's the new J.J. Abrams show, for those who don't know.

I thought the pilot was pretty good.  The production values were off the chart.  Anna Torv plays the lead role, and while it was nice to see her stripped down to her bra and panties a couple times, the fact that she seemed to only be able to cue up a "nervous" expression on her face through about 90% of the show was a little annoying.  Charlie Conway was also decent, although a majority of the episode he was responding with unfunny one-liners to anything his dad said.  All-in-all, I think it should turn out to be a pretty good show.  I'd assume it will be filled with the usual Abrams twists and turns and half-truths about everything.

I was kind of out of it while watching this show, but did the hot confused looking blond take lsd that that dude from Dawson's creek just "whipped up"  and it was only like an hour trip?

Holy cats.  I'm only at the 60 minute mark, but I'll be amazed if this manages to last as long as "The Nine."

The Nine? UGH.

I'll catch the first season on DVD if it turns out to be decent.

I thought it was pretty good. I like the premise and it certainly is classic Abrams.

I don't know if it's been mentioned before, but this is just the usual, classic Abrams TV show.

It lulled at times, and the end twist was a touch predictable, but it was certainly enjoyable.  A good kickoff to the series.  Hopefully they can better the pacing by cutting the airtime to 60 min.

Emphasis on the 'y'.  It takes longer than two hours to whomp up a batch of LSD.  How this was supposed to synergize with everyone's favorite battlefield anesthetic, ketamine, completely eludes me (John Lilly reference notwithstanding).

I didn't make it to the end--the characters were just too flat for my taste.

I have one TV with ONE VCR.

I might have had two if I didn't try my hand at home VCR repair (http://the-slog.blogspot.com/2008/03/home-vcr-repair-journey-in-pictures.html)...

I caught up on this.

The acting is very, very, very bad.  Weebs is right.  Pacey does nothing but deliver one-liners, and the chick is annoying as hell.  The doctor could be a good character, but that actor freaks the shit out of me.  The thing that made Lost so compelling was the strength of the acting and the intriguing characters.  This show doesn't have that at all.

I'll give it a couple more episodes and see if it improves, but I'm not impressed.

Last night's episode was the first I've seen that at least mustered enough character depth to hold my interest most of the way, but the denouement and ending were still something of a groaner.  I'm guessing the bit with the apple might have made sense had been I watching on a color TV.  Then again, perhaps not.

You're guessing right. I have a color picture box and had no idea what the hell was going on with the apple. Yeah the show is worthy of groans at times but it's still entertaining stuff, especially the WACKY scientist.

I don't know how to do a lobotomy.

Besides, I like plenty of TV that's not considered good.  Fuck everyone else.

Aha.  At first I thought they turned it into a tomato.  But then it crunched, so I speculated they had found a way to make, say, blue apples, having mistaken the safe for some sort of fringe Easy-Bake Oven.

Should be interesting to see wha hai in the finale next week when William Bell shows up. That bald observer guy is almost as creepy looking as Mike Quade.

Of course I'm still watching.  Yeah it's good.  The previews for next week look pretty sweet.  Olivia being one of the kid test subjects is a nice wrinkle they've thrown in there.
I do find it hard to believe, however, that Pacey could build his little "project".

And although I like the show, it's really just a dumbed down non-island version of Lost.  Maybe that's why I understand it better?

Yup. Not as AWESOME as I was expecting for a season finale (too much explain-y talking, not enough doing stuff), but that last scene made it all worth it. JFK and Len Bias are alive, and the Twin Towers are still standing? This 2nd reality looks muy interesante.

Here's a screenshot of the newapaper:

And some interesting stuff from the comments at the AV Club:

QuoteConsider the headline that the stock market has been closed for 21 days. If we were to presume a) that these incidents occur in real time (as in, an episode that debuts on May 12, 2009 occurs on May 12, 2009), b) that this newspaper is a day old, and c) that the only reason the stock market would close is due to a terrorist attack, then that means that a terrorist attack occurred on April 20.

This world never experienced a 9/11. They had a 4/20.

This would explain why the Obamas were moving into a 'new' White House.

QuoteKeep in mind that there is some SERIOUS shit going on in the alternate reality. Remember last week when Olivia shimmered over and there were buildings burning in the Boston skyline? All of the FBI agents were in the shit, and the other agent was giving Olivia crap about being interested in a pair of burned twins while the world was falling apart.

So my question is, are there THREE different realities? Last week Olivia saw Boston nearly destroyed, and a scarred Charlie mentioned something about a quarantine. This doesn't seem to jive with Len Bias being Finals MVP (unless they clinched in Chicago against Jay Williams and the Bulls) and a peaceful NYC.

There are all sorts of crazy directions they could go with this.

Yeah that and working on opening a portal to a second Earth where there are still the Twin Towers but also a strange blight that killed grass in trees in the neighborhood where the mad scientist from the first Earth crossed over to steal the other version of his son after his original Pacey died.

I was confused too...

QuoteMonday's hourlong, which was originally an unaired Season 1 episode, kept in line with "Fringe's"  procedural template and even revisited some of last year's storylines, but the decision to advertise what was an "old" episode as a new one didn't help the cohesiveness of the serialized show.

In the episode with the watcher guy. They referred to Charlie dying and the watcher helping to bring him back or something along those lines.

It was the Season 1 Finale.

Was anyone else wondering why Peter didn't notice that the choking toxin the immortal Nazi scientist made specifically to affect Walter's genetic profile, didn't affect Peter at all? If I was Peter I would've figured out right then and there that I was kidnapped from an alternate universe when I was a kid.

The last four episodes have been epic, thus far, which is why I can understand the musical number next week; inject some levity before what is sure to be an epic season finale.  John Nobel is perhaps the best actor on this show, perhaps one of the best actors on tv at the moment.  The way he played that scene in the hospital room was fantastic.

This has to lead to a Peter deciding which side he wants to be on moment, no?

Yeah, they've been awesome. The show had some duds early in the season, but they've really concentrated on the mythology since coming back from the break and I think the writers have found their footing. One piece of shitty news: it looks like we're only going to see William Bell one more time (http://www.movieline.com/2010/04/what-leonard-nimoys-retirement-means-to-fringe.php). Too bad because I was pretty excited to get his whole backstory.

John Noble is the balls. The different tone of voice he used as Walternate (Hello, son) was great. He's now played three characters:

- Normal, crazy Walter
- Arrogant God-complex Walter (before William Bell took his brains out)
- Secretary of Alternate Dimension Excursions

and he pulls it off easily. This show is on a great roll, and based on the previews next week won't disappoint.

Yeah I caught that. Maybe a reference to this line by Walter:

QuoteWe all had these abilities until there was a moment in history where something was done to us and it was shut down. I suspect aliens.

Great episode. I've been enjoying this recent run of Fringe more than Lost. Next week should be excellent and there are a ton of interesting Earth-2 tidbits for them to expand on next season, like season 11 of The West Wing. Very cool how a bunch of stuff is coming together (past cases, ZFT, the Observers).

It's a word from the show.  It was a drug that Walter and Bell tested on children in the late 70s and early 80s.

Great way to start the new season.  More time in Earth 2 is always appreciated.  I have to believe that Olivia is not actually turning, but is pretending to in order to get out of Earth 2.

I don't know if anyone else noticed, but there was a shout-out to the City of Vancouver where this show is shot, I presume (much like it's spiritual predecessor The X Files).  In the locker room scene with the alternate fringe division, one of the lockers has Roberto Luongo's name written on it.  Nice.

This show is great.  Remember when people watched it and talked about it?

I just watched the first 15 minutes of the pilot. Christ on a cracker. This show makes Burn Notice look like The Wire.

I don't really watch Fringe or agree much with FrostedT, but... FrostedT is right.

Way to give the show a real chance, dude.

After I posted this, I continued to watch the rest of the pilot. Still awful. Congratulations to you and Gil on your armistice with the worst person on Desipio. Hope it works out well for you.

There's a good chance the production budget will be cut, of course.

Great news. The fact that they actually pulled off Olivia as Bell without making it lame, gives me confidence in these writers.

There's always a tension in legalese between preserving Latin vowel qualities and just slapping on the wigs.

Where does a wig with bleach blond highlights fall in this spectrum?
