Tom Gorzelanny, LHP (3-1, 5.19) vs Johnny Cueto, RHP (8-8, 4.06)
Scouting Report:
Cubs: The Cubs acquired Gorzelanny on Thursday from the Pirates, and the lefty will make his debut and return to the big leagues in this game. He's been pitching for Triple-A Indianapolis, and was 4-3 with a 2.48 in 15 games. In July, Gorzelanny had a 1.11 ERA, giving up four earned runs over 32 1/3 innings in five games. Former Pirates GM Dave Littlefield, now a special assistant to Cubs GM Jim Hendry, had scouted Gorzelanny, who did pitch for Pittsburgh from May 18-June 9, but only in relief. He was strictly a starter in the Minors. In fact, Gorzelanny picked up a win in relief against the Cubs on May 25.
Reds: Cueto had another rough outing against the Padres last Thursday. He gave up six runs in just five innings as he lost his fourth consecutive game. The big blow to Cueto came in the fifth when he allowed a three-run homer to Will Venable which gave the Padres a 6-1 lead. Cueto has given up 26 runs over his last five starts while throwing just 22 2/3 innings. He will look to break out of his slump against the Cubs who beat him July 25. In that start, Cueto allowed four runs over six innings.
There's way to much premature ejaculation going on around here. I remember a simpler time, when we would commence splooge threads to celebrate those that have actually done something(s) good.

It just looks like he's splooging in virtually every picture, so I figured why not.

OK, so should we start calling him "Zippy" or "Pinhead"?
Splooge.
How is Pittsburgh in last place if they have five starters better than this guy?
Baaaby Ruuuth!
Nice game, ya freak.
DPGR?
I was going to post in here that Gorzo was going to be the bigger part of that trade. Finally a Weebs prediction that wasn't completely obvious, and yet there's no record of it ever happening. FAIL.

A face made for radio
Call me crazy, but I'm withholding splooge until he pitches this well against a Major League offense.
I predict he pitches longer for the Cubs than the other recent number 22's.

QuoteGorzelanny has had elbow issues in the past, and we know from last year that he can lose his command and become completely useless in the blink of an eye.
That's cool. I just won't blink. Ever. Again.
Annnnnnnnnnnnnnd, scene.
This is about as close as you can get to the 1985 Cubs.
I think I just heard Rick Sutcliffe's hamstring snap again.
He did his job today.
Everyone else sucked ass.
I thought Kosuke was good again. I'm a little worried about Ramirez. Should I be?

No.

No, but yes on Theriot, Soriano and Soto.

I'm not worried about Theriot.
Actually, that's not true. I'm worried he'll still be here at the end of the season.

We already know Soriano is a complete suckass. Theriot should be okay, but I'm a little worried about Soto. Ramirez has hit the ball hard in most games I've seen so far (two).
I'm not worried about the rotation, but I'm terrified of the bullpen.
So Ramirez has no lingering effects in that shoulder right now? That's reassuring. It always helps to talk to you guys.

I would think any questions about the shoulder would have disappeared when he hit .304/11/49/.381/.496/.877 in his 64 games after returning last year. If anything, I'd say this is just a bad April for him where he's struggled to get his timing down. His pitch selection hasn't been that awful, he's just been slightly ahead or behind when he gets his pitch to hit. A lot of balls fouled back or popped up. He was limited a bit in the spring for some minor injury and he's just slightly behind. He's had some slow starts before. He was the balls in April the last couple years but in 05 and 06 he posted lines of .241/4/14/.344/.458/.802 and .197/4/10/.321/.394/.716 before going on to have great years.
DPD. My problem with Soto is his tentativeness. He did well yesterday just to take two walks when they weren't going to give him anything to hit, but in most of the at-bats I've seen where they even pitch to him, the best pitch he gets to hit is the first one and he never swings at it.

Did he spend the winter working with Sandberg?
BUMP
Has GorzeSloth always been topping out around 92-93 on his fastball? It seemed like he had a little extra on it.
seamed.

I don't know, but I think being spotted an eight-run lead early helped.

It can certainly contribute to a "fuck it & chuck it" approach, instead of trying to be too fine.

I think that's what Grabow was doing to be absolutely sure. Gorzo was throwing some nasty breaking balls up there. I'm not saying he'll do that all year, but if Sean Marshall can be decent, I don't see why Gorzo can't. I think they're pretty close to the same pitcher with Gorzo having a decided edge in stamina, Marshall having a bigger bender. And there'd be a 15-round, brutal but anti-climactic draw in the ugly department.
