And at that moment, a hatred was born.

I initially parsed this as "'Fuck the Pirates Rivalry' Thread," to which my immediate response was "rivalry?" Then I tried "'Fuck the Pirates' Rivalry Thread," but it's still not adding up for me.

I've been looking for a new reason to hate a team. This will do nicely.

Guess he wasn't happy about being Pittsburgh's starting 1st baseman, but never getting a chance to bat.

I can't hate Rodriguez, or the Pirates.  He thoroughly, thoroughly embarrassed himself, his organisation and his home town, and gave me a bloody good laugh whilst bowing out of the postseason without a fight.  What's not to love?

Agreed. The Pirates and Cubs both deserved better than a one-game playoff to settle this issue. If it had gone the other way though, my butthurt would be felt from outer space.

I agree a series is better, but when a crying Pirates' fan moaned on Facebook about it, let's also remember that the Cubs have a rested bullpen and the Pirates would have 1, if not 2 players suspended from the playoffs (and I do not think you can appeal suspensions in the playoffs).

Also if the Pirates hadn't gone 34-42 against the central, and 17-21 against the Reds and Brewers they'd have avoided this fate.

I don't hate the Pirates. I pity them. What a feeble attempt that was. Went out like little babies.

The lasting image for me will be Gerrit Cole in that scrum screaming his head off knowing he just got his ass handed to him. Jake Arrieta or not the dude put his team in a hole right off the jump.

I'm rarely on board with Kaplan but he tweeted that Cole should be "mad at himself about the gag job he orchestrated rather than playing the tough guy" and that was basically my thoughts exactly. Barking at Jake like it's his fault you gave up a moonshot to Schwarber.

My favorite part was when the starting-first-baseman-who-didn't-even-get-to-bat claimed that Ross attempted to choke him.

Just imagining Ross and his grandpa strength hauling ass on Rodriguez' neck makes me laugh and laugh and laugh.

David Ross earned his keep last night, I'll give him that. Making sure nobody on the Cubs side did anything stupid, and keeping Rodriguez from fucking things up like he wanted to.

As much as many of us thought the acquisition was terrible and have repeatedly pointed to his laughable offensive stats as reason he shouldn't be on this team, he's clearly really, really important to the Cubs.

It's awful for the long-term intangibles narrative, but in this specific instance, he obviously brings something immeasurable to this team that makes them better.

This is the comp I keep making on twitter and no one wants to acknowledge it. It's fine. Ross is a cool guy, you're welcome to like him, and people can make the argument that the Cubs believe his defense and intangibles make him more valuable than the extra half win or so they probably could have gotten by giving 50 starts or whatever to Welington Castillo. Just tired of people feeling the need to go the extra mile and act like said intangibles make him more important than guys on the team who actually start and are good at baseball.

Actually, David kind of admitted his hand was on Rodriguez' neck, but he said it wasn't on purpose. It was a response to Rodriguez putting his hands on David's chest

And no I don't seek them out, there was an article posted on ESPN literally yesterday that had the lede "THE CUBS MOST IMPORTANT PLAYER MAY BE A .176 HITTING BACKUP CATCHER". This isn't just my head fairies making this crap up.

Anybody who does that is a fucking boob and I think you know that. I too like David Ross, because I find him funny. And I think Lester trusts him and in fact feels like he needs him in order to do his best work. The fact that he was in the middle of that scrum shows you that nobody with a lick of sense, least of all he, thinks he's more important than guys who start or play baseball well.

I was looking for Herrera in the middle of that scrum with his "Hands-Helmet" still on his head. If that would have happened it might have been the single most hilarious thing I'd seen on a baseball field in my entire life. Jesus, he missed an opportunity there, but probably wisely took it off before entering the fray. Hell, it could've gotten broken. Can't have that.

Fine.

QuoteAt the private team dinner late last month in Milwaukee, veteran reliever Carlos Villanueva went around the table and playfully explained to several players sitting near him how lucky they were to have him as a teammate. Carlos Martinez, the reliever pointed out, was a kid and then Villanueva comes along and he's an All-Star. Jhonny Peralta was a respected shortstop and with Villanueva around an All-Star.

Villanueva, grinning the whole time, told young Miguel Socolovich he was in Class AAA and then with Villanueva — voila! — a major-leaguer.

The grin then shifted to a knowing smile.

"I turned to Yadi," Villanueva recalled later with a shrug. "And, OK, what do I say? I stunk. I come here and he makes me good."

Or, the Cardinals look at Villanueva and then scout the Cubs. "Yeah, we're lucky, all right. You came from the Cubs where you helped them to 96- and 89-loss seasons. They're coming into Busch Stadium with 97 wins plus a Wild Card win, and they have their brooms out already." Yadier Molina interjected, "Ow! My thumb still hurts."

It's awful for the long-term intangibles narrative, but in this specific instance, he obviously brings something immeasurable to this team that makes them better.

Just like Yadier Molina.

I don't know who those people are (presumably idiots on Twitter that you seek out,) but we've repeatedly heard guys like Rizzo and Bryant saying how important Ross has been and that's good enough for me.

Adam Wainwright called Yadier Molina the greatest catcher of all time, that good enough for you, too?

And no I don't seek them out, there was an article posted on ESPN literally yesterday that had the lede "THE CUBS MOST IMPORTANT PLAYER MAY BE A .176 HITTING BACKUP CATCHER". This isn't just my head fairies making this crap up.

The Muskrat also once touted Ross-for-MVP https://twitter.com/carriemuskat/status/625717626254196737 so I ain't crazy, dammit.

The Kang thing had a lot to do with Watson hitting Arrieta, right? They can say that Arrieta hit two of their hitters, but I don't want to live in a world where a professional baseball team truly believes that a guy with a negative million ERA in the second half of the season who is blanking them in a one-game playoff intentionally tries to hit two of their batters in one game...with sweaty-gripped curveballs that just graze them.

This was the Kang thing...and it was fucking stupid. They just used the two HBP's as an excuse to retaliate.

I'll give Watson a smidgen of credit for hitting Arrieta around the hip and not going too high.

I was looking for Herrera in the middle of that scrum with his "Hands-Helmet" still on his head. If that would have happened it might have been the single most hilarious thing I'd seen a baseball field in my entire life.

DPD, but this is the funniest mental image I've had in a very long time.

Only thing better would had been if he put on the Hubba Bubba container to protect the hat

A disembodied hand flying out of the center of the scrum would have been ACES.

Cubs need to keep the edge on these fuckers for years now, much like the Bears against the Vikings* in the 1980's, the Bulls against the Knicks in the 90's (sorry, Pex) and the Hawks against the Canucks in the late aughts/teens.  It won't get old but it'll get tiring.

*Or Redskins to the Bears.  Or 49ers to the Bears. sigh

It's funny that Watson finally got around to retaliating for Kang...but Cervelli can change his slide, miss the bag, and miss Castro in trying to break up the 5-4-3 DP...but that's okay.

What a gutless wonder - a relief pitcher who will never face a bean ball deciding to throw it after his team was basically whipped into submission.

I've had so much fun over the last 20 hours with my friends and yinzers out here.

Nah, other tools are pretty similar. Marte the last three years has averaged .286/.345/.446 with 15 homers. I could see Jorge doing .286/.345/.500 with 25 homers. Similar armcocks. Hopefully Jorge becomes a better defender overall as well.

I'm not sure I hate Marte or Polanco yet, either.  And, if Pissburgh thinks Cole sucks, I'd take him on The Cubs in a minute.

Otherwise, fuck 'em all.

How could we hate Gregory?

I'm good for hatin while the hatin is good. I can't hate Andrew McCutchen, though. That guy fucking rules. The rest of 'em can take it somewhere else of that's how younger about it.

I think a handful players doesn't make an organization. As far as rebuilding models go, the Pirates are admirable in their success. They've also got a lot of young players who would be extremely easy to like if they were in a Cubs uniform. That said, I hope each game next year is intense and heated, if only because it'll give Cubs players something to play for over the long 162 game stretch.

Given the depth of their pitching, I'm really happy the Cubs had to just beat them once.

So, they basically halved the Cubs rebuilding plan that was realized by Dallas Green?

Kind of, except their World Series drought will be 37 years next year, so they're approaching Dallas Green territory. We can call the 1990-1992 Pirates their version of the Cubs' Durocher years.

I really enjoyed the Cubs wrecking Taillon's shit. He was the Pirates last great hope, their rookie savior. That game was the baseball equivalent of a horror movie where the victim empties the entire pistol at the monster charging them, then chucks the gun at them in desperation before they get eaten anyway.

I'm an awful person who likes to laugh at other people's pain so I browsed the game threads/recaps on the Bucs SB Nation site and basically every other response boils down to:

1)Just start beaning every Cub, including Maddon
2)McCutchen is old and washed up and needs to be traded, also should have been benched for not running as hard as possible on that K in the dirt against Arrieta
3)Joe Maddon is a hipster douchebag
4)Cubs fans didn't even care about baseball before 2015.
5)They lack Fire and Passion and Clint Hurdle needs to give himself his inevitable grabber by throwing chairs and screaming at them all in the locker room.

I admit I do the same with other team's blogs SKO. Like last year after the Divison Series win against the Tards and many times on Second City Hockey after series wins. Especially after beating the Blues.

That one cracks me up and they use it ALL THE TIME. The Annual Wildcard Shitkickings are the only times they've sold out their stadium in the last 25 years and they want to say Cubs fans didn't care about their team before it was good. I mean the stereotype that fans don't pay attention to the game and just go there to have a good time was born during the decades when the team was always completely irrelevant. Of course people went just to have a good time and didn't get heavily invested in the game. Is that really worse than just not going at all? Listen to the crowd during any game this year and tell me they're not paying the fuck attention in a way that would bring a single tear running down Huard's cheek.

Wrigley does have a lot of tourists in attendance too, but that's because it's fucking cool. And five years of architecture school qualify me to say that it's fucking cool. God forbid people want to hang out at a cool place with beer and pretty girls and stuff to do in the neighborhood. I guess we're all horrible people for liking cool stuff.

I think it's important to note that people somehow try to say that because Wrigley has good looking girls and beer that people are stupid for going there.

I remember taking a friend from out of town to Wrigley in '08, and he was amazed that the crowd cheered when the scoreboard was updated to show a division rival had lost a game, pushing the Cubs closer to the division title (Cannot remember who lost, because I'm not a common Huard). He told me "I've never seen a crowd this invested in both what's on the field and what's going on in the league."

And the last time I went to a White Sox game, half the fucking crowd of "real Chicago baseball fans" were on their phones.

My fervent belief is that literally every fanbase sucks and is loaded with fairweather people.

That makes no sense.

That one cracks me up and they use it ALL THE TIME. The Annual Wildcard Shitkickings are the only times they've sold out their stadium in the last 25 years and they want to say Cubs fans didn't care about their team before it was good. Precisely. Though I like picking on BFIB, I think fan superiority over another is dumb. They're all the same. There's a subset that is intelligent and thoughtful. There's also the big flotsdam of fans who have egg accounts who are pretty fucking dumb.

I don't think the BFIB are worse than Cubs fans, they think they are better than everyone else, so I just like pointing out that they aren't. I think it's safe to say everyone here knows how terrible most Chicago sports fans are, the arguments used against them are just pretty dumb and apply to just about every other fanbase.

From what I gather on Twitter the only non terrible fanbase in sports belongs to the Mariners. Those people seem cool.

Do they really, though? I'm sure you have anecdotal evidence pointing yes. And I have plenty of anecdotal evidence of Cardinal fans who hate that whole BFiB label. So, where are we? Some sports articles by places like Sporting News have labeled them as BFiB and their own media has, as well. I don't know that we have unequivocal evidence that the STL Cardinals fanbase, by and large, buys in to the BFiB moniker.

I think when their own broadcast crew trumpets that claim over and over they're stuck with it, and the vast majority of Cardinals meatballs I know do parrot that line. There are certainly intelligent Cardinals fans, and unless they are Will Leitch I don't seek them out to make fun of them. The ones I do troll are the guys like my uncle who absolutely buy the BFIB thing hook, line, and sinker.

Well if like 5 people on twitter isn't a representative sample, I give up. I mean if twitter agrees on something it's obviously what the common man wants. Hence the reason we have such strict gun control laws.

They're still a little young for legal weed and great beer, but they're pretty big fans of the snow cones at Coors Field.

I know one Mariners fan and he is absolutely insufferable when it comes to all Seattle teams. Including the Sonics, as he refuses to recognize the Th*nd*r.  He's essentially the Mariners' Hawk Harrelson: everyone is out to get the Mariners and he never forgets a single slight.

My best friend lived in Seattle for a couple of years. He eventually moved, in part because he found that Seattle people in general were insufferable hipsters.

My best friend from HS lives in Tacoma. He's still an insufferable hipster.

I think I'm finally old enough, bald enough, and out of touch enough to stop getting confused with hipsters.

Nope.

Sure, compared to you people, I'm still young, vibrant, and cool. But in the real world, I'm actually quite out of touch gay, Illinois-y and liberal.

Illinois is just wrong.

Gay? Who gives a shit? I've been called gay so much at this point that it's about as offensive as being called the wrong first name. The only reason I even got confrontational with that dude was because he wasn't even someone my wife knew, and he was commenting on her page. That feels like a huge breach of basic Facebook etiquette. Even Fork's weirdo right wing friends stick to his status updates, not everyone Fork vaguely knows.

Both teams will have to get All-Star games for this to go away.

As pointed out on twitter: 74-66 (.529 winning %, same as the WC leading Mets) against everyone else, 3-13 against the Cubs. The Cubs shit all over their great season last year and then have singlehandedly kept them from a third consecutive Seligcard loss.

I really could not muster any hatred for the Pirates after spending my entire life basically pitying that franchise, even as a Cubs fan, until 2015 happened. Pirates fans put Cardinals meatballs to shame, considering at least the Cardinals fans have been baseball meatballs their whole lives. Pirates fans are clearly just Steelers meatballs trying to fill some time between Penguins season and training camp, so their response to literally everything is A)Hurdle needs to yell at the team B)Hurdle needs to yell at the other team C)Hurdle needs to start ordering some Cubs to get hit.

Another frequent cry from that crowd is "where were all of these Cubs fans before 2015??" which is an amusing retort from a fanbase that played in an empty stadium for 20 years and still couldn't sell out when they did have a contending team for three years.

In general all opposing fans need to pick a lane on that one. Either Cubs fans were bandwagon folks who didn't show up till 2015 or we're idiots who only go to games to drink beer and hit on pretty girls and we'll show up no matter how bad the team is. You can't have both.

Third Option: Not giving a shit how other people label Cubs fans.  Also, something I don't quite understand, who gives a shit *when* someone became a fan.  I mean, it's fun to hear stories from TJ and Huey and Fork about the 70s and shit but I'll be damned if I can muster enough fucks to give to someone who wants to label me a bandwagoner just because I became a fan in '84.

To be clear I was just saying they need to pick a logical stereotype, because we can't all be bandwagoners who showed up in 2015 AND people who watched a losing team for years because Wrigley was fun.

I frankly don't care when anyone started rooting for the Cubs. If you didn't care to watch until they had a team worth watching, good for you. There was probably very little that was sane or healthy about the things we subjected ourselves to while watching this team in The Before Times. We like to think it made us tougher and better fans and probably made us all closer to each other as mutually scarred chuckleheads, but no one needs that baggage. It was fun as hell to be rewarded with a title for a lifetime of suffering, but my son was born into a world in which the Cubs have never been anything but awesome and my hope for him is that never changes.

That's all fair, but I admit I was a little annoyed when my 6-year-old son and his friends told me how great it was the Cubs won the World Series because those entitled brats had been waiting their "entire lives" for this. All the way back to the Theodore Roosevelt Lilly IV era!

Let's quickly point out again where it's helpful to be aware of what other fans think. Morph's Peoria Heritage comes with the unfortunate experience of having to befriend several Cardinals fans. (I'm sure Yeti has the same problem). When Morph posted Champ Summers photo on social media yesterday, his acquaintances who are Cardinal fans got all bent out of shape that Jeremy should act like he's been there before. (I think he has been there, as in being a fan of a team contending for a division title in late August in 1984, 1989, 1995, 1998, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2015, 2016 and now.) The joyless pissant response is more delicious than a Porterhouse cooked medium rare with a tasteful Cabernet Sauvignon.

Every time the Cubs win a game, a little more of those people's souls die, their already-blackened hearts go numb, and that makes me feel good in a satisfying way.
