Jim Fregosi is dead. (http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/10454930/former-major-league-manager-jim-fregosi-71-dies)
How can we remember him?
- Hawk Harrelson's choice to replace The Genius, finishing last his two full seasons in Chicago.
- The guy who managed a clubhouse that included John Kruk, Darren Daulton, Mitch Williams and Lenny Dykstra.
- An All-Star shortstop with the California Angels.
- The centerpiece of the trade that sent Nolan Ryan to California.
Take your pick. But he's dead, the second all-star shortstop turned White Sox manager to see it all end in Miami.

Oddly, both managers in the 1979 ALCS died while on (http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/8859584/hall-famer-earl-weaver-former-manager-baltimore-orioles-dies-82), or immediately after having been on (http://www.nj.com/phillies/index.ssf/2014/02/jim_fregosi_former_phillies_manager_taken_off_life_support_after_suffering_severe_stroke.html), a cruise.
The sea seems to take more former managers than it does Herman Melville characters these days.

David Foster Wallace warned of this (http://harpers.org/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/HarpersMagazine-1996-01-0007859.pdf) nearly 20 years ago.
