"The New York Daily News reports: A former Chicago Bulls draft pick and Duke captain jumped to his death Tuesday from the roof of a private athletic club in New York, according to police sources.

Tom Emma, 49, was a 10th-round selection (No. 210 overall) of the Bulls in 1983, when the NBA draft was 10 rounds. Relatives told police that Emma, who ran a company devoted to training young athletes, had been depressed.

"I can't believe it," said Stanford coach Johnny Dawkins, Emma's teammate at Duke. "He was a great guy.""

Alternate title - "Hangtime".

If the NBA draft was 10 rounds, did they have 30 man rosters?

I gather that only two guys picked in Rounds 6-10 ever played in the NBA. Three from Round 5, five from Round 4 and seven from Round 3.

Well that seems like a lot of effort for no reason.

Apparently 10 rounds was chump change...

http://www.nba.com/history/draft_evolution.html

QuoteIn the early years of the draft, teams would select players until they ran out of prospects. The 1960 draft went 21 rounds. By 1974, it had stabilized to 10 rounds, which held up until 1985, when the draft was shortened to seven rounds. By agreement with the National Basketball Players' Association, the drafts from 1989 onward have been limited to two rounds, which gives undrafted players the chance to try out for any team.
