Yeah. I'm pissed at one guy on a team coming off a division title and within 5 outs of a pennant that was actually 20 games out of first didn't lock up a wild card.  Yeah, it's ONE GUY I'm upset with for BLOWING EVERYTHING!

If not for Ryan Fucking Dempster, that 2004 team had destiny written all over it.

To be fair, you were rooting for them to lose because of Kent Mercker.

And several others. That team was detestable and they got what they earned.

Since it's apparently time to post, I'll note that a search of our previous discussions happened to also led me back to this gem I'd managed to forget about:

I'd just like to say I agree with Chuck that being irrationally pissed at one guy on a team for BLOWING EVERYTHING is completely strange and bad and if you do that you should feel bad.  One might even call that "wrong."

BTW, Randall Delgado may be on his way to the bullpen

6.75 ERA, -.5 WAR (B-R; to be fair, Faggraphs has it at 0.0), He's been given 2 starts this year and given up 9 runs in 7.1 innings of work.

Goddammit, Dempster.

Sounds like Renteria is the right man for the Cubs' job.

''We've got to keep plugging away,'' said manager Rick Renteria, who has used almost every lineup combination available. Asked after Sunday's game if he could think of any other potential changes to make, he said, ''No.''

Is it only me, or does anyone else wish that this season was over already?

I'm enjoying "watching" (following online mostly) the progress of Rizzo, Castro, Olt, Ramirez, Kalish (a little), Grimm, Rondon, Castillo...

As far as the actual games, Bonifacio has been fun to watch, both the good (getting on a base a shitton) and the bad (getting hilariously picked off), Samardzija has been amazing and Rizzo's ABs are good stuff.

So no, I don't wish it was over, though I still get worked up when I'm following a game and they blow it.
I can't believe I even know these people. I'm ashamed of my internet life.

Absolutely not. I haven't watched a game since early April so it's not really bothering me in the least. I'm in no hurry to skip an entire summer after the winter we've just had though - especially since Spring is probably a pipe dream at this point anyway.

Jose Veras

What's the track record on 1-year signings so far?

Not including any trades or larger deals. Just the quick gambles that seem to be generally to turn into prospects (or guys they can keep.)

Good:
Paul Maholm
Jason Hammel
Scott Feldman
Emilio Bonifacio
Nate Schierholtz (if there was a "meh" category, he's there, but he's more good than bad.)

Bad:
Jose Veras
Scott Baker
James McDonald
Ian Stewart
Kyuji Fujikawa
Chris Coghlan
Dioner Navarro (played decent, nothing in return)
John Baker
George Kotteras
Joe Mather
Ryan Sweeney
Brent Lillibridge

I'm sure I'm missing about 20 guys, but that's quick check.
Considering the low-risk nature of all of these, that feels like decent return to me (having done no comparison analysis of other teams.)
I can't believe I even know these people. I'm ashamed of my internet life.
