Anyone read this? Gil, I'm casting a glance in your direction.
Nixonland at Amazon. (http://www.amazon.com/Nixonland-Rise-President-Fracturing-America/dp/B002BWQ4P0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1248264065&sr=1-1)
How have I not responded to this post? Yes, I have read it, and yes it is good. I have many critiques, mostly my center-right potshots at what I know is the author's known liberal proclivities. On the whole, however, it is a decent synopsis of the era through the prism of today's politics. There are parts where I differ, but on the whole, it is a pretty good launching pad for the debate about the issues. It's certainly not an entirely dispassionate academic treatment, but it is good for what it is.
Solid B+, I'd say.
One caveat, it is like 700 pages, so devote some time.
Outstanding book. Especially if you're a librul dope like me who was pretty un-learn-ed about recent history (Gil was right that the author leans to the left). The book covers 1964 to 1972, a period during which it appears the country was just about ripped in half due to the conflicts over hippies, yippies, brutal cops, Black Panthers, Weathermen, civil rights, school integration, welfare, Vietnam, and Stew's 50th birthday.
As for Nixon - on the good side of the ledger he was an extremely skilled politician. And he wasn't stubborn ideologically (at least when it suited him politically). But god damn was he a venal, paranoid, rotten motherfucker.
The author mentions at the end that Bob Dole eulogized Nixon by saying that the second half of the 20th century was "the age of Nixon." Dole was right - whether or not you think this is a good thing is another question.
Got the hardcover shipped over from Amazon for 15 bucks. Good deal. Really enjoying it so far - the 60s and 70s are fascinating. Which brings me to my next question...see new thread.

QuoteYORBA LINDA, Calif. — The sign at the entrance to the largest exhibition room devoted to a single subject at the Nixon Presidential Library and Museum reads "Watergate." But on Friday, the exhibit was nearly empty, dominated by a 30-foot blank slate of a wall that is testimony to a new battle set off by this still-polarizing former president: how to mark the scandal that forced him from office 36 years ago.
Officials at the National Archives have curated a searing recollection of the Watergate scandal, based on videotaped interviews with 150 associates of Richard M. Nixon, an interactive exhibition that was supposed to have opened on July 1. But the Nixon Foundation — a group of Nixon loyalists who controlled this museum until the National Archives took it over three years ago — described it as unfair and distorted, and requested that the archives not approve the exhibition until its objections are addressed.
First on their list: a distressing lack of clowns.

QuoteKYOTO, Japan — The demonstrators appeared one day in December, just as children at an elementary school for ethnic Koreans were cleaning up for lunch. The group of about a dozen Japanese men gathered in front of the school gate, using bullhorns to call the students cockroaches and Korean spies.
Inside, the panicked students and teachers huddled in their classrooms, singing loudly to drown out the insults, as parents and eventually police officers blocked the protesters' entry.
The December episode was the first in a series of demonstrations at the Kyoto No. 1 Korean Elementary School that shocked conflict-averse Japan, where even political protesters on the radical fringes are expected to avoid embroiling regular citizens, much less children. Responding to public outrage, the police arrested four of the protesters this month on charges of damaging the school's reputation.
More significantly, the protests also signaled the emergence here of a new type of ultranationalist group. The groups are openly anti-foreign in their message, and unafraid to win attention by holding unruly street demonstrations.

QuoteIn a conversation Feb. 13, 1973, with Charles W. Colson, a senior adviser who had just told Nixon that he had always had "a little prejudice," Nixon said he was not prejudiced but continued: "I've just recognized that, you know, all people have certain traits."
"The Jews have certain traits," he said. "The Irish have certain — for example, the Irish can't drink. What you always have to remember with the Irish is they get mean. Virtually every Irish I've known gets mean when he drinks. Particularly the real Irish."
Nixon continued: "The Italians, of course, those people course don't have their heads screwed on tight. They are wonderful people, but," and his voice trailed off.
A moment later, Nixon returned to Jews: "The Jews are just a very aggressive and abrasive and obnoxious personality."
I laughed.

Finally finished this the other day. Great, great book. I know the author is liberal but he certainly doesn't paint a happy picture of the Democrats. I actually really enjoyed the last sections of the book where they talked about McGovern's campaign. My only real memory of anything about McGovern was that episode of the Wonder Years were Kevin Arnold campaigns heavily for him and they find out he got massacred.
I wouldn't hate reading other books about presidential candidates that had dreadful failures for campaigns.

Better than I could have imagined.
BC makes a disturbingly believable Juggalo.
That's just really not fair.
Just finished this up...I have to say that going in, I thought I knew enough about Nixon (in general) and the politics in the 20th century (in particular) that little would shock me.
So, it was kind of a nice surprise (I guess) to find that I wasn't quite as jaded as I thought I was.
Anyway, RV pretty much sums up the subject better than I could:
