I thought we all agreed Barry Bonds, while an asshole, is the best player ever. If we don't we should. We should agree on that right now.

I'd agree with that. And if Bonds missed 3.5 years of his prime while killing Nazis and Communists, I'd put him at #2. That said...

Disagree. Just a back of the envelope deal, but there's at least 30 Theriots separating Bonds from Mays to say nothing of the gap between Bonds and Cobb/Aaron/Speaker.

The gap in WAR between Bonds and Mays isn't quite 30 Theriots (162.5-165.1, with Mays missing two prime seasons to military service). Hell, if you want to throw in pitchers there are Cy Young and Walter Johnson between Ruth and Bonds. By WAR or any other measure though, the gap between Ruth and anybody else is, well, Ruthian.

It's Ruth stint on the pitcher's mound which ends all arguments.

2.18 career ERA in 1,221 innings, (led leage un ERA+ in 1916), 94-46 mark, and a World Series consecutive inning shutout record that stood for about 40 years until Whitey Ford surpassed it.
Just a sloppy, undisciplined team.  Garbage.

It's a shame that Martin Dihigo's career isn't quantifiable.

He even got some short outings during his Yankees career and fared well considering he was a full-time outfielder. If you combined Randy Johnson and Barry Bonds, you'd have a guy you could argue for against Ruth. I do wish he could have played against the top non-white competition as well, not just because I'm sure he'd continue to dominate (though the numbers would have to suffer at least some) but because segregation and color barriers are the fucking worst.

I don't think "Randy Johnson + Barry Bonds" is quite right. I get what you're saying, but you'd need a guy that had a great 5/6-year career as a pitcher.

By the same token, it would be fun to see Oscar Charleston, Turkey Stearnes  or Josh Gibson's numbers.

As it is, the fine folks at Seamheads are compiling statistics:

http://www.seamheads.com/NegroLgs/index.php

They have a long way to go, but the best comparison between leagues will be Roy Campanella, since he played 10 years for the Baltimore Elite Giants and 10 for the Brooklyn Dodgers.
