Hawks enter the arms race, signing John Scott to a 2 year, $1MM contract.

Saw him play last year. Both the size and speed of a mountain.

Doesn't matter, he's going to be a folk hero.

John Scott is a great name for a tall tale. In fact, I heard he beat the shit out of Pecos Bill.

John Scott uses a live rattlesnake as a condom.

John Scott makes Friday Night Fights on Thursdays.

John Scott will wear the sweater they had on the dinosaur.

I think he's more of the appendix of Desipio.  Yeah, it's here and you're vaguely aware of it, but only if reminded.  The only time anyone notices it is when it ruptures (on Weebs in the video game thread).  Beyond that, though, it's basically useless and offers no redeeming value.

Sharks sign Niklas Hjalmarsson for 4 years, $14 million. Hawks have 7 days to match.

Unlike most bandwagon jumpers who fell in love with Buff or Kaner, I arbitrarily decided to make Hammer my favorite Hawk. Please tell me he's not going anywhere.

Tough situation.

$3.5 per seems like it's outside of the current budget for him, but they may be able to squeeze it in.

If they match the offer sheet, waive Huet and slot Crawford in as one of the goaltenders, they'll have just $4,938,410 in cap space with 15 players signed, not including Niemi (whose compensation will probably be determined in arbitration).

Carrying a minimum of 20 players, that's room for 4 minimum salaries plus a maximum $2,938,410 cap hit for Niemi.

Let's say they trade away Kopecky's $1.2MM cap hit and slot in Toivonen as backup goalie while leaving Crawford in Rockford. This would give them $6,388,410 worth of cap space with 14 players signed.

This would allow for a maximum cap hit of $3,888,410 for Niemi (plus 5 minimum salaries).

(Another option is to keep Hjammer and forget about Niemi, probably requiring them to find a free agent netminder they can squeeze into that same tight space.)

I'm with Tony.  I've enjoyed watching Supernintendo's development since the last half of '09.  He really seems to have become a top four defenseman.  I'd be more bummed if they lost him than I was for Steeg, Byfuglien, Ladd, Burish et.al...

He's probably not going anywhere but Niemi is different story unless they win the arb case by forfeit.

Yeah, the more I think about it, the more I picture this playing out with the Hawks matching the offer and attempting to trade away Niemi's rights ahead of arbitration.

Via the Hockeenight shoutbox, he's not quite dead yet...

http://www.startribune.com/sports/wild/blogs/97864184.html

QuoteI've been hearing rumblings the past few weeks that former Wild defenseman Kim Johnsson, whose four-year, $19.4 million deal he signed with Minnesota in 2006 expired after this season, is contemplating retirement.

I spoke with his agent, Rick Curran, this morning and Curran tells me Johnsson is still suffering effects from the concussion that ended his season with the Blackhawks in March. Johnsson was traded to Chicago along with 2009 first-round pick Nick Leddy for Cam Barker in February.

Said Curran: "He's still suffering symptoms of a concussion, and for the moment, he doesn't have any immediate plans to play.

"I've seen it alluded that he's going to retire, and I don't think that's necessarily the case for the moment. For the moment he's going to let the symptoms subside. He may very well retire eventually, but based on my conversation with him a week ago, it's been suggested that he just let his symptoms subside and then decide for himself. It's not going to be for quite awhile that there's a determination if he'll play.

"It's fair to say that he's got no intentions of looking to come back and play in the immediate future. So while at the moment he's not retiring, he's certainly not going to play in the immediate future and he may very well eventually be effectively retired."

They're super thin on D so they really need to match this offer sheet. Let Niemi go and sign a veteran netminder on the cheap. The Hawks can make him look good - whomever it might be.

Dunno if you morans are paying attention, but Comcast is replaying the playoffs over the break. I have them all set to record, but I may have to delete some. It looks like they are only showing the wins for the Western Conference playoffs and all of the Stanley Cup games. So far, I have the first three wins of the Nashville series, so there are plenty more to see. Each game is 150 minutes (Game 5 of that series is 180 minutes). I have about 42% of my DVR full so there's no way I'll be able to keep them all.
