Let's do this.
McDermott with back-to-back great games in the Summer Leagues.
Acting like he's Tony Snell out there or something.
And Boozer officially amnestied today.
Go #whitebasketball.

Literally more white dudes than the 1954 Hickory Huskers.
Jesse Jackson just threatened to shut them down if they didn't address the situation.
Spike Lee just threw a trash can through a window of the Berto Center.
Even the 1986 Celtics are like, "What?"

But seriously, I don't see anything not to like about this Bulls team. I consider myself a man without a country at the moment and I'm hoping to go see a couple games this year. I'm really intrigued by Mirotic and I can't wait to see what Rose brings to the table after this surgery. Butthurt level: sinking.
Rose won't stay healthy and he eats too many gummy bears.
I know it's almost meatball cliche at this point to get on D-Rose, but Jesus, just shut up, dude.

He's just not very intelligent. They're doing the right thing by being cautious but asking Derrick Rose to articulate that plan is going to produce a metric shit ton of facepalms forever and ever.

It's a fair point - maybe if Thibs or Garpax said a little more, he could say a little less.
But yeah, he's just a moron.

Butler is taking it to a new level.

I wonder what kind of market he's pricing himself into with his insurgence this season. The knock on him, if there was one, has been his shooting, but he's in the high 40s right now, which is excellent for a guard. Take whatever Lance Stephenson turned down from Indiana as a starting point - and I'd take Butler over that assclown in a heartbeat. If they do lose Butler he'll be hard to replace.
I did notice his minutes were somehow UP this season, like almost 40 per game. Maybe they know they can't re-sign him.

Please reference the bolded part, wherein Cieslak, Andrew refers to Gasol outperforming his expectations by what one can assume is a considerable amount, leading to the "holy shit" exclamation. The literate might construe this as him admitting that Gasol has been better than the marginal improvement over Boozer that he initially predicted, before you felt the need to point out that he was wrong about that thing he just copped to being wrong about.
But hey you're reading things and making connections so good for you.

Some good Grantland Bulls splooge (http://grantland.com/the-triangle/a-quick-salute-to-the-nbas-best-football-team/) up front, and then some talk about how they're like an NFL team because they play like every game is do or die or something.

Quote
It's only December 1, but it's already time to run back one of the NBA's annual questions: How the hell are the Bulls are doing this?
They have already played a handful of games without Derrick Rose, Joakim Noah, and Taj Gibson, and it hasn't really mattered. They have played a league-high 12 road games, and they've come through that stretch at 9-3. Jimmy Butler has exploded out of the gate looking like an All-Star, and when the Bulls have all five starters healthy, they're 5-0. Meanwhile, Pau Gasol is playing like it's 2010, Nikola Mirotic has looked like a real weapon off the bench, and Aaron Brooks is the latest in an endless collection of backup point guards who come to Chicago and fill the D.J. Augustin Career Revival Role. Kirk Hinrich is still there, too, because Kirk Hinrich is always there. Kirk Hinrich will be with the Bulls forever, like luggage.
The last time I enjoyed Bulls basketball this much was Rose's MVP season. Given that they've had the whole team healthy & available for about 1/3 of the season, it's probably too soon to say what this team is and if they're a viable contender. But damn, Niko and Jimmy are fun to watch, and there were flashes last night of the old Derrick. Really liked the closing lineup of Rose-Brooks-Jimmy-Mirotic-Noah. Actually I think I like any closing lineup that doesn't include Hinrich.

At this point in the season, we really don't know much about any "contender" other than the obvious signs which point to success over the coming grind and endless string of games. The top teams out West look so good but only one can advance to the Finals. The big question, as always, is how healthy the Spurs will be when the games matter.
In the East, the Bulls have more depth than they've had since 2010-11 and there's no flying death machine out there to knock them out as surely as the Heat did that year. We have to look at Washington and Toronto as true contenders based on their talent level but they remain flawed and young. And still nobody knows what to make of Cleveland. If the playoffs started today, I'd have them leaving in the second round because their defense simply cannot be trusted. However, they've shown flashes of brilliance on both ends and recorded some key victories along the way. The predictable overreactions to their sluggish start (ZOMG MORE 2012 LAKERS THAN 2010 HEAT AMIRITE?!?!?) failed to account for the intelligence and team-first mentality of their superstar. Eventually, he will figure shit out and if his teammates won't or can't, he'll have to take matters into his own hands more than he has in years. That wouldn't end well against a team that plays defense as well as Chicago.
All that said, this season has been boring as fuck for me so far. It should get better after next month as things come into focus. Christmas is the unofficial start of an actual NBA season. Everything before that is one big jerkoff.

Jerking off is fun, so you're contradicting yourself.
Anyway, the East is pretty open. I think Toronto is pretty good despite the two losses to Chicago. Anxious to see more of the Wizards because they really looked like they were getting their shit together in the series vs. Chicago last year. But that Bulls team couldn't score. This team has no such issues.
RV is right - the real takeaway here is that the Bulls are insanely entertaining this year. Just hope everyone stays relatively healthy.

If I had to say right now, I wouldn't give the Bulls much of a chance against whatever dongstomper comes out of the West meat grinder. I'm just not confident they can all be healthy together long enough to get into a good rhythm heading into the playoffs. But it is refreshing to have some fun offensive basketball to watch, instead of an 84-78 snoozefest.
Just for fun - and let me emphasize FOR FUN because Dirk is a legend, they've been used differently, Niko entered the league 3 years older than Dirk etc etc - but age 23 seasons:
Niko62% true shooting percentage
16% rebound rate
10% assist rate
3% block rate
0.2 win shares per 48
Dirk60% true shooting percentage
15% rebound rate
11% assist rate
2% block rate
0.2 win shares per 48

Niko
62% true shooting percentage
16% rebound rate
10% assist rate
3% block rate
0.2 win shares per 48
Dirk
60% true shooting percentage
15% rebound rate
11% assist rate
2% block rate
0.2 win shares per 48
Blocks assists and rebounds are not very relevant when discussing Dirk's impact on a basketball game. What can Niko do whenever he wants no matter who or how many gigantic African men try to stop him? Dirk can do some very unseemly things in that situation.

Agreed. He's making 3's at a significantly lower percentage (26%) than his already not-good career mark of 31%, and he's shooting more of them than he did before. He's just a shade under his career percentage on 2's, but he's shooting quite a bit less of them. We're still only 25 games into his return. My hope (possibly misguided) is that once he gets to 50 games or so, he'll be back to form and will trade some of those line drive 3 attempts for nasty drives to the rim. If that happens then this team could be terrifying.

Yeah, there's absolutely no reason for him to be taking over 5 a game. He's getting questions about it and says he needs to "keep defenses honest," which doesn't actually make sense. Defenses will just honestly sit there and let him shoot threes. Tony Parker is probably 45 years old and still gets to the rim whenever he wants, and he's never had to shoot threes for the sake of doing it.
But let's not let this distract from the general awesomeness that is this year's team.

It's actually a very mature thing for a team to suck ass in January. If they're smart enough to sideline Noah until he's right, they have a chance to begin ramping up in time for the playoffs.
Noah's health is a bit worrisome, I know. But this team should improve as the weather warms up.

That's been apparent for awhile. I didn't think this was a championship team before this swoon. I thought Eastern Conference Finals was the ceiling. I think that's still very much in play. That offense is too sporadic and Derrick Rose is not an MVP-caliber lead guard anymore. He'll get you a bucket when you desperately need it from time to time but he doesn't do enough to elevate this team above it's current state. I do want to see them with a healthy Noah though before I write them off completely from a Finals trip. If that's possible, there may be another gear in there that the rest of the East would struggle to match.
Seriously, stop shooting.
Quote from: PenFoe on January 30, 2015, 12:19:34 AM
Seriously, stop shooting.
They're not a very athletic bunch, these AlBinulls. The defensive numbers are way down, which when you consider the number of minutes given to Rose, Gasol and Mirotic makes perfect sense. The era of the try-hard, win-ugly Bulls was fine when there was virtually no chance of advancing past the second round of the playoffs. What else did they have going for them other than winning a Sunday showcase against Miami in overtime and shaking their fist at God? This is a different kind of year. The East is open enough that they could conceivably compete for a conference title.
But to do that, they have to get very right offensively. They won't be able to rely on that defense getting much better than league average. And they'll have to score enough points to put themselves in contention against teams like Atlanta, Cleveland and Washington that have explosive offenses and defensive challenges of their own. Can they do that with Rose now a shadow of his former self and with Noah looking less dynamic than he was last year when he carried them for months? Is Thibs the right coach to make this transformation happen in-season? Are they just too old and slow and white and stupid to live?
It was interesting to see Cleveland go from a hapless, underachieving mess with a coach on the hot seat to eleven straight wins and a game back in the Central after getting LeBron back from a short respite - and a couple of expensive roster changes. And yet LeBron tells the world that the team is nowhere near good enough to compete for anything in the playoffs and there remains a ton of work to be done. Will any player on the Bulls say that and mean it? I know Thibs knows it.
Which brings me to another thought about whether it would be better for both the Bulls and Thibs if the coach moved on after this year. I wonder what he could do for a team like Sacramento or even Oklahoma City. Rudderless and top-heavy, could those teams get contributions from their supporting cast and clear instructions for their stars in order to exceed expectations?
I know I ask a lot of questions. It's because I've only been watching the modern NBA for a short time and don't know shit about shit. It's fun though.

I guess I'll have this avatar forever.
I was starting to accept that we'd probably never see the violently awesome Rose from 2011 again. I figured he may take a year to adapt and then still have a few more good years left (like, maybe he'd still be a top 5 point guard). But even that more modest hope seems unlikely now.
The guy was the youngest player to ever win an MVP and fate has just shit on him ever since.

Especially with Noah blocking like a pulling guard for him.
In light of the indeterminate Kevin Love injury and J.R. Smith sunspension I'm going to have to adjust my Cavs/Bulls prediction from "Cleveland in Four!" to "Fuck if I know. What time do the Cubs play today?"
It's going to be a tough, physical, entertaining series. I expect several fights and suspensions due to the Bulls turning into a bunch of gobby cunts whenever LeBron shows up and starts dongwhipping their entire roster. I look forward to flipping over between Cubs innings to see how it all plays out.

I expect several fights and suspensions due to the Bulls turning into a bunch of gobby cunts whenever LeBron shows up and starts dongwhipping their entire roster. I look forward to flipping over between Cubs innings to see how it all plays out.
I believe it's spelled "glorbby."
It's spelled GLORBANZO BEANZ

I still think the Cavs should be the favorites against the Bulls. It's definitely more interesting now though.
After last night's performance and the apparently newfound unstoppability of Khris Don't Spell it Chris Middleton I just don't see how they're gonna stop Lebron. Love or no.

Agreed. The Bucks won't put up much of a fight.

Josh Smith also suspended for the first two games of the next series.
If the Bulls could stop dicking around, this is the best chance they'll have to beat a LeBron-led team.
I still don't think they will, but it should be their best shot for a while.

I don't know about that. LeBron is now on the other side of 30. In two or three years, he will probably be leading teams all Magic Johnson like but won't be LeBron Damn James, Cyborg, Cobra Dick, Destroyer of Dreams. Hang in there.
Or maybe he'll ditch Cleveland again and go to the Spurs where he'll win titles until he's 60.

Yeah, I should have clarified that I meant a "LeBron in his prime" team.
I'll still root hard when the Bulls beat him as he's hobbling around on one leg in 8 years, but it won't have quite the glory that this could have.

Like watching Jordan clusterfuck his way through Washington en route to his hilarious failure in Charlotte, my dick still feels the playoff punches of yesteryear, and I'm not soothed.
If we're talking about firebarning people, how about Worthless Human Being Kirk Hinrich? I think I'd rather watch Cameron Bairstow try and play shooting guard then watch this old asshole stumble over his own dick trying to guard Kyrie Irving.
But hey the Bulls won in spite of him!

Cleveland came out flat and played like imbeciles. You can tell they're more talented at a few spots but completely clueless at almost every other. I don't know about Blatt. His eyes are too close together. It's a problem.
The Bulls kept doing what worked and the Cavs seemed uninterested in stopping them. That's a dumb basketball team. The return of J.R. Smith, basketball savant probably won't help matters much. Outside of LeBron and Iriving going completely out of their minds, the Cavs look like they'll lose this series. And even if the Bulls turn back into the Bulls and start missing shots and getting hurt and running out of gas down the stretch, Cleveland doesn't look like they can go much further.
It's not that Love is all that spectacular, and he's not used properly in Cavs offense while being a negative on defense, he does knock down threes, which LeBron and Kyrie need in order to get their drive and dish game going. They were really figuring things out toward the end of the season after, what, six months together? Now they're just stupid.
If they can't beat a Loveless Cleveland team that also features a gimpy LeBron and Irving, is Thibs gone? I think it's assumed that whoever replaces him will be a worse coach and yet this all feels very inevitable.

I think they can win game six and make Cavs fans sweat out game seven but still come up short.

I'd like to see LeBron come out with that Game 6 in Boston thousand-yard stare and put away a wounded team on the road. He rarely goes into "Me Against The World (so you can all eat shit and die)" mode after wins. I'd like to see it for once. That's one of the final knocks on him. They said he wasn't clutch and that's in the dustbin of ancient history along with the can't be the man on a title winner horseshit. All the haters have now is some stupidity about flopping, which every team does and something about a passionate, killer instinct that Kobe and Jordan had and he apparently doesn't. I hope one of you people will be kind enough to remind him of that on his way to the court Thursday night.

He doesn't watch tv or deal with social media during the playoffs but if somebody could figure a way to get some Jordan elimination game tape in front of his face today, that probably wouldn't hurt. That punctuated by a Joakim "Cleveland Sucks" sound bite might turn the worm all the way over. I'm not going to go full meatball if he does come out sharing the ball and missing open jumpers. As long as he's not dribbling and dribbling and jab stepping and killing the offense, he should be ok. The zero turnovers last night was a great start to him snapping out of whatever funk he's been in recently. Some credit goes to the Bulls for cutting off driving lanes and injuries around him reducing passing options. But he's been a better-passing Carmelo Anthony for most of this season and it's kind of disgusting.

All Game 7's are elimination games but not all elimination games are Game 7's, Chuck. Sheesh. Jordan himself closed out two separate Cleveland series at the buzzer--one of which was a Game 5 which
was an ultimate elimination game (The Shot in '89, obvi).

The Wizards did not make the playoffs with Jordan as their out-of-shape power forward/GM/owner/albatross. Say what you want about LeBron's team building prowess this season (James Jones, Mike Miller, Shawn Marion, Kendrick Perkins, Oh, my god) he at least had the good sense to sign LeBron James.

I went to check his numbers because I had no idea and found he average 20/6/4 on 45% shooting in his final year with Washington. That's with 1.5 steals and a block. For whatever reason, I remember it being much worse than that. Probably because of narratives.

I think my disconnect here is one of nomenclature. To me, I view an elimination game as a game in which a player and his team are out if they lose. I look at the ability to win a series as a close out game. Hence, in my word use, Jordan only played in (i.e. faced) elimination 6 times from 1989 until he left the Bulls. When Apex said LeBron should look at Jordan's "elimination game tape" I thought that's what he was talking about.
Please continue.

It seemed worse because of the mustache. And the team was really bad. Plus 45% isn't bad for a guard but he was a forward then. Those numbers as third banana on a playoff team would look a lot better. He could still do stuff, especially in the post. His positioning and rebounding were still very useful. But he wasn't the destroyer on defense that we'd come to fear.

if somebody could figure a way to get some Jordan elimination game tape in front of his face today, that probably wouldn't hurt.
There's very little of that. Going back to, and including, the 1990 season, Jordan only played in 4 of them. He won two. None of them in the NBA Finals.
And now Chuck's got me wondering what 4 instances he's talking about. If you're talking 7 game series, then there are only 3, going back to '89-'90--Detroit in '90 when they lost in the ECF, NY Knicks in ECSF in '92 when they won and Pacers in '98 ECF when they won. What's the 4th?
1995 when they lost to the Magic in 6.
One key to facing so few elimination games might be to retire a couple times in the prime of your career. That's using the fire and the passion in a nifty, veteran-savvy way, no doubt.
Why the fuck would LeBron care about how Jordan did facing elimination when LeBron is not currently facing elimination Chuck
Your nomenclature is your own, but context clues might have told you that's not what we were talking about. And by Huey's count he "faced elimination" 13 times in his pro career. people cherry picking his prime for the sake of exaggerating the resume of the unanimous choice for Greatest Player Ever is one of the main reasons I've always hated him. With the exception of getting his own father murdered, I've celebrated every one of his handful of personal failures vociferously.
So, that was fucking awful last night.
As depressing a Bulls loss as I can remember in a while. Just an overall terrible performance.
I don't think there's any coaches out there that they'll bring in better than Thibs, but this team also feels pretty maxed out right now. They had every chance to win this series and just weren't the better team, even without Love and a banged up Kyrie and an up-and-down (mostly up) LeBron.
That Cavs team was beatable as hell this series and while I doubt another coach would have gotten them over the hump, it sure feels like they need to change something, though I'm pretty sure it's a player or two versus a coach.

The look to be stuck for the next two years until Rose's contract expires.

This was always a low-ceiling team as long as it was built around Rose, who could not remain healthy or regain his elite performance levels. I'm not saying everybody, and I know the Bulls watchers around here are more realistic than most of the meatballs I encounter. But I constantly heard people predicting that the Bulls would beat Cleveland even before the Love injury. I agree, the Cavs are very mediocre and every one of LeBron's Heat teams would probably sweep them. But I never really saw playoff sustainability in anything the Bulls were good at during this ill-fated Thibs Era. Max effort on defense? Great in December and March but in April everybody does that. Deep bench? Ok, feel free to give minutes to Heinrich and John Lucas the Turd against LeBron and Dwyane Wade. Offense running through Joakim Noah? Who does that? And how hard is it to come up with a solution for it? It's not just local fans. National media gave this Bulls team way too much credit, I suspect, because they did try hard during the regular season when most didn't and it made them a more interesting cover.
What burned me the most was their negative, bitchy attitude all the time. "Cleveland sucks." "Hollywood as hell." "You can be a fool if you want to." "Twelve is better than three." For a team that was never really any damn good and complained and whined as much as any team in the league, they certainly claimed moral high ground on a lot of shit.
Blow this team up. Sign a real free agent. Get a high draft pick. Fire Thibs. Endure another season or two of passable Derrick Rose.
And remember this team for what it was. A bunch of try-hard, talkative dickbags with no Finals appearances and one of the most undeserved MVP awards ever presented.
RIP.

I agree with the bold. As for the rest of it, my only advice is to maybe stop reading and listening to stupid people.

I don't really have another tear-down/build-up of the Bulls in me right now.
The last one took 10 years.
I'd rather try to plug and play another few years with this core, because at least playoff basketball is exciting as hell.

Point taken, but the first 5 games were pretty great, even the big deficit in Game 5.
Last night was the worst kind of basketball.
Just awful, heartbreaking basketball.
But it was still way better than watching Ty Thomas and Tyson Chandler and Kurt Hinrich and Eddy Curry and Marcus Fizer and Jamal Crawford and Corie Blount and Trenton Hassel and Dalibor Bagaric and Chris Duhon and now I hate everything.
Thanks.

Corie Blount sucked, but at least he had the decency to play around the title teams. I resent his inclusion in this group.
