Probably because he hit a ball yesterday that may had ended up in your son's front yard. That was his third home run in I believe 4ABs (and the first 3 HRs were on 3 consecutive pitches).

CAN JAVIER BAEZ HIT IN THE MAJORS RIGHT NOW?!?
Then it's your classic Al stuff, Gary Scott mention, Michah Hoffpauir, Scott McClain.
Then a story about Rogers Hornsby, Billy Williams and Ron Santo. Then some more Ron Santo.
Something something Corey Patterson.
In conclusion, the answer is "probably" but Al doesn't recommend it. Or advocate it. So don't yell at him, man.

Apropos of Stew's post, my 79 year dad had recently gotten an iPad and I used it to show him the wonders of baseball-reference.com. To test his memory, we looked up Frank Ernaga, as my dad had claimed that the guy hit a homer and a triple off of Warren Spahn in his first two at-bats and then largely disappeared. Turns out he was right.

I'm already laughing at the Sox. Cub fans had no expectations for 2013. Sox fans, however, were hoping they would have the stamina to not fade like they did last year after a surprisingly strong start. Instead it looks like the wheels are coming their turdwagon pretty early. BWAHAHAHAHA.

Rizzo signed through 2019 for $41MM (http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/chicago-cubs-sign-anthony-rizzo-to-long-term-extension-jed-hoyer-theo-epstein-051213) (two club options and escalators could keep him signed through 2021 when he'd be 32 for $73MM)
Theo/Jed should start going after everyone Rizzo's agent represents. This is a great deal for the cubs.
Pretty good for Rizzo, too. He loses 1 year of free agency, and gets guaranteed generational wealth level income after only 173 major league games played.
Not bad for a cancer survivor who has been traded twice.
Massive applause all around.
Shit. Chuck likes it? Now I'm looking for the snag.

I know it doesn't matter at all but the Cubs are only one game behind Milwaukee and the White Sox record-wise. If they were to finish ahead of either I'd laugh.
Since the Cubs are going to suck anyway, I'd rather they suck spectacularly and get better draft picks for next season. We'll have plenty of time for guffaws in a couple years.

No way. That's what last year was about. While I've not harbored any hope of them actually competing this year, I really don't care to see a repeat of the '12 shitshow. I'd like to see

For what? When the Cubs become good, there are two position players and a pitcher or two who will be a part of it. This is a long-term project, and it's still in the talent acquisition and development stage. I'd rather they nab another top 10 stud next year than some second-tier guy, since the stated goal is sustained success.

I don't think the difference between a Top 10 pick and, say, a #15 pick is going to make a difference; at least it shouldn't. If it does, then I'm concerned about the Epstink regime (odds are, they'll still get a Top 10 pick this year even if they play as suckily as you hope). Off the top of my head, Patterson, Montanez and Harvey (L-R), were all Top 10 picks during the MacPhail era, if not Top 5. They hired the current regime so they wouldn't have to rely on their suckiness backing lucking them into competitiveness. They're already going to benefit this year; I don't think the absence of a Top 6 pick for next year is going to break this franchise. They ought to be fine picking 10th or whatever.

From a historical standpoint, you're sort of right. And Fork is also sort of right. Top-3 picks are far and away the most likely players to succeed and after that it gets a bit muddled. Like you said, I'd trust the front office to get a good player at No. 10 about as much as I'd trust them to get one at No. 6. But the talent level of the top 2-3 picks generally tends to be really high and scouting is getting more refined since the days of Patterson, Montanez, etc. So teams aren't missing quite as often as they did before. Of course, since baseball is so hard to scout, there will always be high-profile misses.
Whether that's all worth enduring another 100-loss season, I don't know. The number of losses doesn't bother me on its own, but another horrible season would probably mean the younger guys aren't developing like we hope and that would be more concerning.

I'd agree if there were more of the future core in Chicago. If Castro & Rizzo didn't buy into the EpHoyStink long-term vision, they wouldn't have sacrificed years of free agency.
Can we start turning this thread into a keeper thread? Like what of Travis Wood, the inspiration of the original "EPSTINK" missive? He's a part of the new tradition right? Or is he trade fodder? Yes AND yes?

I don't think the difference between a Top 10 pick and, say, a #15 pick is going to make a difference;
But there is a huge difference between the #1 to #9 picks vs. #10 and after. If you have a top 9 pick, your pick is protected from being lost via a free agent signing. If a team were to sign a top free agent, I believe defined as "Class A", and they have draft pick #10 or later, they lose the pick. Not so if you are in the top 9.
What you want is what Theo said before the season started (http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2013-02-26/sports/ct-spt-0227-haugh-cubs-chicago--20130227_1_theo-epstein-cubs-fans-rooftop-owners):
"What I want to avoid is the middle ground. It'd be nice to make the playoffs or get a protected draft pick (awarded the bottom nine teams). We're not hiding that. There's no glory in 78 wins instead of 73. Who cares?"

The feelings this team gives me are weird. They're 16-22 and on pace to be very bad, record wise, which is all that matters. Still, they're only five runs from having an even run differential. What the hell? They lead the NL in extra base hits. What the hell? Their starting pitching, again, has been actually above average. What the hell?
I mean honestly if people can't see that this team when augmented over the course of another season and a half is going to be not only good but sustainably good then they're just trying to be dipshits.
That's all there is to it. This is a very bad team that I don't think has gotten their asses handed to them on a baseball field more than one or two times this season.

26 years old, making just over $500K this year.
Under team control (arbitration eligible) through the 2016 season.
I'd say it's okay to go buy a Wood shirsey.
Or just turn your old 34 into a 30.
Or a 37, if you want his number on it.

Back to this, conventional wisdom would be to slot in Appel or Gray after Samardzija in that second SP slot. That'd leave them free to use Baez as a trade piece for one of the Tampa pitchers.

I like it, but what are we FYCing for? When Robinson Cano hits one out for Not the Cubs? When Robinson Cano goes 0-fer? Or when Not Robinson Cano (e.g. Barney) has a good game?
Also, Chuck: Eli is right. It's not going to happen.
1. He's already (ahem, Dominican) 30, so his best years are probably behind him already.
2. He's looking for a HUGE payday at the end of this year.
3. His agent is Boras, so you can forget paying anything other than top dollar.
4. Barney's not bad anyway, and the money could be far better spent somewhere else.
5. No, Chuck.
Give it up, man, seriously. Jim Hendry might have tried to sign Cano. Epstink and Hoystink won't - points 1 and 2 above in particular are pure Krypsteinite.

Aside from Cano leaving Boras to run this town with Jay Z, I'm with Tonk. Just can't see them shelling out for a second baseman on the wrong side of 30 (especially with big contracts like Hamilton and Pujols already looking like huge mistakes, Hamilton especially) when they have Barney already. Cano plays almost 162 games every season; there's no way he keeps that up over the length of his next contract. He has to break down sometime, and he's due. And this team obviously has bigger problems than 2B right now. Even if Barney doesn't hit enough to avoid a net loss despite his glove, there's still a decent chance he'll figure things out early in the hypothetical Cano contract. Then what? The nice thing about Barney is he's never going to be a guy who makes a ton of money. If he can approach league-average production at the plate, maybe a little under, his glove will add the rest and they can use those savings elsewhere.
I think there might be a place for Barney on a winning Cubs team. I'm sure they'll eventually upgrade if they get a chance, but until then let him save runs in the field, save some money at the same time, and prioritize offense at other positions. They'd rather spend the Cano money on extending Samardzija or setting some cash aside for Baez, Almora, Appel/Bryant/Gray, and other big needs. Then, once the overall young talent level has been addressed, if second base is still a problem they'll have the flexibility to sign someone or make a trade. Based on everything Epstink have said, signing a guy like Cano at this stage in his career doesn't seem to fit into the Cubs' plans. I think Cano is ticketed for L.A. or New York anyway.
Since Vitters is far from a sure thing, if the Cubs did decide to spend money on the infield, a run at Chase Headley would be more likely. Not saying it's all that likely, just more likely than Cano. Headley's contract would come with its own problems -- he just turned 29 and he doesn't match Cano's consistency or durability. Then there's the question whether Baez will end up at third, but that could be fixed by moving Headley back to LF. I guess I'm trying to say it would make more sense than signing Cano, but I'm not gonna buy a Headley shirsey just yet.

First of all I am very much enjoying this Cubes baseball discussion. I had not heard until reading this thread that Scherzer was even a trade possibility, and was a little surprised that he'd be mentioned in the same sentence as Price. Price is a year younger, but Scherzer's numbers are slightly better:
Price: 839 IP, 3.52 FIP, 8.3 K/9, 15 WAR
Scherzer: 852 IP, 3.62 FIP, 9.4 K/9, 16.9 WAR
And what's this about Matt Moore? Why would the Rays trade him this offseason when he'll only be 24?

I saw it somewhere on Twitter but can't seem to find it now. I guess the thinking was that the Rays could get a better package for Moore than Price since he's under control for longer. Not sure I buy it because that's exactly the reason the Rays should want him around. He'll be cheap for another 3-4 years.

There's some speculation that the Verlander's deal means the Tigers would need to trade Scherzer to stay under or closer to luxury tax levels. That's also part of the speculation with Robins... never mind.

Yes. We are running out of time. After that, what overpriced old guy free agent acquisition who does nothing in the playoffs do I have to pick on? Hossa?

Three walks and then a Granny? Nice one, Marmol. If you had any pride, you'd tear up your contract and walk away.
Also, what is a Putnam?

He also walked the batter after the granny. If acting manager Jay Mequirk had a sense of humor, he would have left Marmol in to see if he could double down.

Another three walks in an inning yesterday. He really needs to go away and think about what he's done. Seriously - this is all in his head, now.
I'm getting a robust semi-chub for this Feldman kid. His WHIP and BAA are much more in line with his solid rookie season two years ago than his numbers last season.
And he has the build of an imposing starting pitcher. Cause you know. That matters. Or something.

Can't a guy enjoy a perfectly good semi-chub anymore without haters throwing cold water on his pants?
So, who was he actually talking about?
Perhaps he was thinking of Travis Wood? Rookie year was 2010. He's 26. And the "kid's" WHIP from 2010 is close to 2013s
The important thing is to have a semi-chub for someone. Somewhere. Who may or may not be 30, could possibly be a couple of years into an MLB career, and has some sort of stats.

Has anybody else noticed that Cody Ransom is now batting .286/.386/.662/1.030 for the Cubs, with 5 2B and a Sosa-esque 8HR in just 77AB?
DIS KID IS ONE FOR DA FUTURE MY FRENTS.
Edit: he's actually pretty terrible against righties (except Adam Wainwright, yay) but his line against lefties is .327/.407/.827. Against southpaws, Cody Ransom is *literally* Barry Bonds.
Also, he's not even the best lefty-killer on the Cubs. Navarro is batting a chuckle-inducing .556/.652/1.056/1.708 (!) with 10 hits, 5 BB and 3HR in just 18AB.

Heh. I'll give you that one, Fork.
We might get another Al screed after some pretty poor outfield play tonight -- Sweeney and Schierholtz were too busy avoiding a stupid, unnecessary collision to actually catch the ball, and Bogusevic going for a very ill-advised falling/diving attempt that he whiffed on and of course the ball then rolled all the way to the wall and let the tying run score. Robbing the great Travis Wood of a deserved win. Basically, minor leaguers playing like the minor leaguers they are (except Schierholtz).
Good thing I'm rooting for a high draft pick or I might actually be upset.
The Cubs are now 34-45. Their X_WL, though, is 38-41, and their record in one-run games is 9-17. In a parallel Universe, this team is around one marmol (the standard unit of suck) away from playing .500 ball. Which is... something, but I'm not quite sure what.

Outside the NL Central, the Cubs (X_WL now 39-41) currently have a better run differential (just -10) than everybody except Atlanta, Arizona and Colorado. Pissburgh are less than half a run per game better than the Cubs, and yet currently stand 15.5 games ahead of your Chicago National League Ballclub, and a full five games ahead of their X_WL. There have to be better ways to raise money for charity than lame T-shirts (Al) and sleep deprivation (http://www.bleachernation.com/2013/07/01/force-me-to-blog-for-24-no-30-no-36-straight-hours-at-the-trade-deadline/) (Bleacher Brett), right? Or he should ask himself, "Can the Cubs mend my broken heart?"

I thought the line that got you in trouble was "Grass on the field? Play ball!"
Read these quotes from Sveum and tell me these aren't the words of a broken man.
"It's almost comical to see this happen every single night," Sveum said. "We have the lead and get beat by guys who sometimes hardly even hit home runs. [Norris] had one at-bat off a left-hander in 15 days and beats us with a three-run homer."
"I'm not concerned about [losing players due to trades]," Sveum said. "We're still viable and able to fill those roles now. If you start getting more thin, then things change. I'm not worried. They're professional players and they have to go out and perform."
"You're trying to stay out of a double play and make something happen, and once again, we didn't perform and swung right through a fastball," Sveum said.
That doesn't sound like a man with the passion and the fire. He had to know what he was signing up for but it seems like it's been worse than he even thought.
DPD. That was hilariously inept.
The Cubs may not be going anywhere this season (although with a 370/377 RS/RA ratio, they're one hammering by the Angels away from being a de facto .500 team), but beating (and blanking) the Tards never, ever gets old.
Also, I was very sorry to see noted gentleman Matt Holliday pull up with a sore hamstring. I do hope he gets better soon.

http://blogs.providencejournal.com/sports/red-sox/2013/07/all-star-rosters-reveal-changing-landscape-of-team-construction.html
QuoteThe blueprint for team success in the majors has started slowly to change. More attention is paid to the draft each year, and building a team through free agency is becoming riskier and riskier.
A look at this year's All-Star rosters shows why.
Both the American and National league All-Star teams this season are testaments to the significance of prospect evaluation. Of the 78 players who earned All-Star recognition, more than half were acquired by their current team through the draft (35), an international singing (four) or a trade while still in the minor leagues (eight).
The draft has taken on additional significance in recent years, and for good reason. Thirty-five All-Stars were taken by their current team in the draft. That includes 20 first-round picks, with two top overall picks (Joe Mauer and Bryce Harper), three No. 2 picks, a No. 3, a No. 5 and three sevens. (The No. 7 pick, which the Red Sox used last month on pitcher Trey Ball, boasts the most alums at the All-Star Game, if we count Prince Fielder alongside Matt Harvey, Clayton Kershaw and Troy Tulowitzki.)

Submitted into evidence as Exhibit B in Pex's transition towards full-blown Cardinal fandom.

Third in slugging. The on base still kind of stinks.
By my count, there are now only 5 players (Samardzija, Castro, Barney, Russell, and Castillo) who remain from the 25-man roster that Jepstink inherited in 2011. That's a lot of goddamn gutless fucking assholes to unload in <2 years.
Snorknado is now the longest tenured Cub -- 5 years as of yesterday.

Actually, make that 6 -- Rafael Dolis. However, even if you use the 40-man rosters from 2011 and 2013, you'll only find those same 6 names common to both.

North side version of Andy the Clown? I'm pretty sure the Sox invited him to Old Comiskey just in time for the demolition.
Sweeping the Giants (however shitty they are) means the Cubs are now seven games under .500 and 9.5 games out of the wild card.

Edwards and Searle also combined for a 2-hit shutout in the first round of the playoffs - Searle gave up the hits in that one. So there's that.

I read earlier this week, I think that it was in the TRIB, that Epstein/Hoyer hadn't made any decisions about Sveum for the third year of his contract. They weren't holding the loss totals of the last two years against Sveum, and that they recognized that they were responsible for those. That being the case, is it conceivable that they would fire themselves? Or at least give back some of their salaries?

For the first time in any of our lives, the Cubs actually seem to have a long term plan that they have every intention of sticking to, and are making material progress towards attaining goals. Now would be a perfect time to throw in the towel.

It was stubbornness. The family moved to San Francisco ten years before the Giants came to town. It was natural that I would continue to follow the Cubs since there was no major league baseball west of St. Louis, (you should forgive the expression). The Cubs were in the World Series four years before I left town. Who knew what the future held? When the Giants arrived I was in too deep to switch allegiance. Anyway, being a fan is not something I can turn off, although the Ricketts are insisting that I do so. In the summer of 1984 I threw a party for transplanted Chicagoans living in Berkeley. There were dozens of them. We served deep dish pizza (from Zachary's, look it up), Chicago hot dogs and Old Style beer. The TVs were showing a Cub game. During the party every single one of my guests confessed that they no longer cared about the Cubs. Even in 1984? My own brother told me that he couldn't tell me the name of a single Cub player. I was dumbfounded. My wife, a California girl, was and is a trouper. She went to Chicago with me to go to the league championship games in 1984 and even attended the playoffs in San Francisco in 1989, when we played hookey from afternoon Yom Kippur services. Even in this rotten year she attended all of the Cubs games in Oakland and San Francisco with me. If that isn't true love, what is?

All of that is fascinating. I doubt if anyone will care to hear my own story when 900 years old I reach. I can tell them how I moved from Buttpuddle to the very doorsteps of Wrigley Field and then stopped watching games for three years while they renovated the stadium and the roster. I'll tell them about the little old man from Berkeley who shook his fist at the baseball Gods for inventing Moneyball and making him sweat out the rebuild while the sands of time dwindled down.
This will all be worth it, you know. You'll see.
Two days in a row. Two different visiting teams clinch the playoffs at Wrigley. That has got to be a record.

Only thing that could make it better is both pitchers also winning their 300th games.

On the other hand, it is good for tourism. "Come to Chicago. See your team fatten up. Visiting teams are guaranteed to win or your fourth day is free."

Theo has a lot to answer for? What? Only if the people who keep asking questions weren't listening to the answers they've been given for two-plus years. It continues to astound that people still demand accountability for Theo and Jed when they couldn't have been more clear since the beginning about what they're doing. No, they're not perfect, but I'm getting pretty much what I expected to get since they took over. Is it just easier for hacks to stir shit up and be "provocative" than to actually try reporting on how the plan is going, whether it needs to be modified, what's working and what isn't? Someone help me out here.

The problem is that they haven't explained how or why letting Sveum finish out his contract would be inconsistent with "the Plan."

Transpose the first two words of the sentence made bold and you have your answer.

I think it's because the plan is to develop young players and they don't think Sveum is good at that, now having seen him for two years.

Listen, I get that someone getting dismissed from the Cubs organization
without the club totally torching said someone's reputation via the media both before and after the dismissal is kind of a novel thing. But I think it's quite possible that, from their vantage points in the front office, Theo and Jed are privy to a number of details about Sveum's strengths and weaknesses as a major league field manager and developer of young talent that maybe we, the general public, can't see. And that perhaps they'd prefer not to go around airing out Sveum's shortcomings just for sake of looking a little bit better themselves.

You are forgetting sir, that we "the general public" pay these people's celeries.

There also seems to be a very rough correlation between runs saved and the quality of the team (not always, since good teams like the Tigers ranked low). It could just be that the Cubs were pretty bad at everything and the numbers reflected that.
Like you said, too much noise here to really be that useful.
