This is execrable. The actual Gogol story is told more or less in reverse as an expository device, except for the bit about the theologian and the rhetorician, which wasn't in the original anyway. This is all just setup for a limp drama involving the nefarious village cleric.
The truly amazing part is that nothing is supernatural. Outside of the original story, there's one effects-laden scene tacked on that is of no consequence whatever. The protagonist wakes up, and poof! it never happened or something. As a bonus, now there's no explanation for what happened in the church either, because the daughter apparently wasn't a witch. What the fuck? What was the bit with Khoma flying around with her on his back, then?
For the love of G-d, if this ever sees wider distribution, stay home and watch the 1967 version.
