OK A-holes.  It's fixed.  Enjoy the orange links, because I have no fucking idea how to change them.  I basically learned scripting in four days to fix this damned thing. - Andy

I'd considered fixing this un-hotlinkable image link for you.

But, seeing as it's nothing more than a vicious slander against the good name of bacon, I'm going to have to conscientiously object.

Who's Apex and his box of ANGER talking to?

Son, the man hasn't been inaugurated yet and you're driving this bus at damn near 180 MPH.  At this rate, you won't survive to the mid-term elections.

...

I also agree that Bush isn't a bigot.  But Apex' caricaturized hatred for Shrilllery makes my leg fall asleep.  It's not even tiring anymore.

This.

After that article comes out, how does Hendry not call Wood or his agent (or both on some new-fangled conference call function that I don't think has been invented yet) and say, "Hey, Kerry. I fucked this one up. I thought we were doing what's best for you, but you want a one year deal to stay here? You got it bud. How much do you want? It's on."

That's what I'd do.

If Hendry does not offer him a one year deal now, then somebody is lying. Either.....

1. Hendry really doesn't want him back.
or
2. Piniella doesn't want him back.
or
3. Marmol is whining about not being the closer and they are trying to make him happy for some reason.
or
4. Kerry really wouldn't accept a one year deal but is trying to come off as the good guy to the media and fans.

Even though I like Kerry Wood as much as the next Cubs fan, this does seem pretty likely.  Isn't this what most professional athletes say when they leave a city they've been a part of for a while?

He said yesterday that they live here year-round and they're putting their kids in school here.  His wife is from Chicago.  I think he meant it.

I do too. My thinking is that Hendry and the rest of the staff decided it's time to move on.

Well if they can get him for one year, it's stupid to move on. There were two relievers on the team worth a damn last year, and now there is one. It's not like it's a rebuilding year.

Yeah, that's how most of us feel. Unfortunately, we aren't the staff.

We should be the staff. That would be cool.

Sam Zell needs buyers...who's with me?

I'll start buying up Replay For Riches scratch-and-wins, you tackle Little Lotto. RV will pwn the Dow.

I'm sure we can scrape together what we need in no time.

http://www.observer.com/2008/media/nate-silver-signs-penguin-two-book-deal-worth-sum-high-six-figures

QuoteEarlier today Media Mob reported that political polling expert Nate Silver, the wunderkind statistician behind the Web site FiveThirtyEight.com, was out with a proposal for two books: one about the art of prediction and the other a Freakonomics-style guide to the mechanics of electoral politics. Mr. Silver's agent, Sydelle Kramer of the Susan Rabiner Agency, told publishers she wanted indications of interest by Tuesday, but evidently the indications came faster than expected (so much for the art of prediction) and Ms. Kramer decided to just hold an auction today.

According to several sources, that auction has ended, and Penguin Group USA has prevailed.

Which of Penguin's imprint will publish Mr. Silver has not yet been determined, however, as there are at least three within the company that are jockeying for the privilege. The pricetag, we hear, is above $600,000 but below $1 million—a healthy sum even though it's paying for two books rather than just one. Update, 5:00 p.m.: New intelligence says Mr. Silver's advance is in the neighborhood of $700,000, give or take a few grand.

Laptop science is for penniless losers.

That's every black person Bush has spoken to in the last 8 years.

Don't see Colin and Condi in there, smart guy. The first two black Secs of State... Remember them? Smart guy? But by all means continue with your Bush as racist caricature. It's hilarious as all get out.

Well shit.  I want to be the Secs of State too.  I would need to take Mondays off; on account of all the soreness and whatnot.

Are you man enough?

You tell me:

That's so obviously fake.

I mean... Where's the Slugger?

Prove it.

I tried, but I can't get my hairy chest and the bat in the same frame.  I just got too much good stuff!

I'm compiling a year-end highlight video for work, which is going to have photos and video footage our athletes, as well as organizational highlights.  You know, one of those fun, montage-type things.  What I need is a song that would go along with the video.

Criteria:

1. Needs to have that nice poppy, arena-rock feel to it.  Something good, but also accessible to the general population -- like a Foo Fighters, Coldplay, Matchbox 20 sound (not that all of those bands are good).  Upbeat, but not too heavy.  You get the idea.  I'm not aiming for music appreciation here.
2. I'd like the song to be relatively recent, within the last year or two, if possible.
3. No swearing, since this has to appeal to all ages
4. About 4-5 minutes long

The latter is simple psychological projection.  Stay on target, Gold Leader.

Either that, or just use a Counting Crows cover of "Meet on the Ledge," which at least has a pedigree.

Use a clean version of Lil Wayne's stuff if you want to be progressive (I know you said arena rock, but arena's don't just play ROCK anymore, ya know?).  Or just go and be the wedding reception DJ and pick something from 3 Doors Down...  Guh.

This is apparently going to be a tennis video for Whitey. Eli already nixed Kanye for this very reason.

Puddle of Mudd it is, then.

No. Colin and Condi were the house Uncle Toms being nice to massah, until they were principled either by endorsing Obama (Powell) or by hailing Obama's election as a great moment in history (Rice).

Lovely, TJ.

But, seriously... Credit where credit is due.

If we're just gonna suggest totally made-up up song and band names, I'll go ahead and suggest "Toothbrush Connection" by Tuna Regime.

Any ideas?  I'm completely out of touch with the current pop scene, so I have no idea what would work.

I probably should have just PM'd Slaky.

I'd recommend AxCx, but their only recent release was a bonus track–filled re-release of a 2001 EP.

I do not approve.

So now that Prior and Wood are gone, do you have to find a new team?

I was never into Prior.

I don't need a new team; I might, however, have to get Extra Innings again, which I was perhaps planning to skip.

Sounds to me like you already have your checkbook out.

(People still use checks, right?)

People who pay by check in stores deserve to get caught in horrible traffic jams while being stuck behind 18-wheelers that totally block their view of what might be happening on their way home from using such inconsiderate instruments of payment.  Especially the ones who actually do the math in their check register at the store.*

*I say this even though my PC isn't working, and I can't access my electronic check register in Quicken until I get a copy of Windows to install on my Mac.  I would never go back to writing checks.  So 20th century.

hi

SMG... I think Chad here has a few questions for you on the finer points of anatomy.

How many licks does it take to get to the center of the MEAT CURTAIN....

*I'm sorry. Did I cross a line there?

Pretty sure you did, you fabulous closet case.

With some people it's not about ideology as much as it is branding.  No matter how good it might be for baseball to see a few different winners, Yankee fans can't believe that anyone other than the Yankees should win every year.

What does any of that have to do with "branding"?

I don't get this Gittles analogy at all.
