All it took was 110 pitches in Milwaukee against the Astros (huh?) and no fucking hits.
Carlos is the balls.

I think he's healthy.
In related news, Grande Z just impregnated CC Sabathia's wife and committed no errors.
FUCK being in normal , I didnt see it till the end of the sux game when they cut away from it.. goddamnit, but ill take it!
And it wasn't even on tv here in Peoria. Fuck. Good news is the magic # is 7, and hopefully I get to see them clinch against the Satanic Fowl next weekend.
Fanfuckingtastic.
I guess Z is ok after all.
He doesn't even have cancer or anything!
Is Soto the first rook catcher of a no-hitter?
Carlos doesn't get cancer...he gives it.
Carlos is the fucking man. And he did it on Fat Pants' mound too. How wonderfully awesome.
And I'd like to give some credit to a wise man named Mike D who predicted a Cubs September no-hitter about a month ago. Anything else you'd like to predict, Huey?

Before he makes a prediction, he needs to tell us how to celebrate. I say the first no-hitter in my lifetime means I get to flip something over.
The first no hitter in Miller Park history. By a Cub. In a game in which the Brewers weren't even playing. They were busy getting swept by the Phillies and losing the Wild Card lead.
Fuck you, Selig.
The Asstrolls sure are bitter.
They just replayed the last pitch. Thank fucking god that it's Len on the call and not Chip overselling the moment.
Goddamn, I hope they replay this one. And soon.
I'm ready to bounce off the walls. I always knew Z would throw a no-no, and I buy a scorecard every night I'm at a game and he's pitching hoping that'll be the night.
I wish I were there, but I'm glad I got to see the last 3 outs on ESPN.
Also what fiveouts said.
This was so fucking cool. I saw Hooten and Pappas' no-hitters, and one of Holtzman's, but the excitement was nothing like this. Fucken fantastico, indeed.
It's got to feel really bad for the Asstrolls getting no hit in front of their home crowd.
Lost in the hoopla: isn't it true that tonight, Zambrano has set a major-league record by getting a hit in 14 consecutive starts?

Yellon told me he was talking to some Disastros fans and they were just happy to be part of history. They said this was slightly better than K-Wood's 20 K performance.

lol. I had a brief thing on my blog about Z's no hitter, and I use stat counter so I can track all of my traffic. So far I've had like 10 hits from google, and the last three hits (all from different people in diff. parts of the country) typed in "Santo" somewhere along with "Zambrano no hitter". That's fucking awesome. Gotta love Ron.
I didn't think it was possible, but after the South Side Bitches, I think I may hate the Trolls more than any other team, even the Cardinals. Fuck the Trolls and Drayton McLane's Big Fat Wallet.

BIG FUCKING Z
Fuck. I was watching foosball the whole time and didn't even know it happened. Fuckity fuck fuck.
You always figured that every time that Z went out there, he could throw the no hitter. Well, every time except the time he hasn't pitched in 12 days after getting a cortisone shot, when he has to pitch against Houston. In Milwaukee.
I love this game. I love this team.
That is one hell of a birthday present. Thank you Z! Now I can say a saw a no-hitter and a Cubs World Series Championship in the same season.
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/recap?gameId=280914118 (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/recap?gameId=280914118)
QuoteZambrano began the ninth by getting Humberto Quintero to ground out on one pitch -- it was his 100th of the game. After pinch-hitter Jose Castillo also grounded out, Erstad chased a full-count pitch low-and-away for Zambrano's first shutout since 2004.
With his jersey untucked, Zambrano paraded triumphantly through a series of interviews in front of the Cubs dugout, then waved to the still-cheering crowd as he walked down the steps.
Quote"It was a long travel day and Hurricane Ike," Astros manager Cecil Cooper said. "That's what I put it on. That and having two days off. I'm not saying he wasn't good."
Cecil, you classy bastard!
Or maybe the Asstrolls fucking suck, and their recent stretch of playing out of their minds is in no way indicative of how good they really are. (Which they arent. At all)
Cecil and Drayton, suck one.
The only way this could be better is for one of the Brewers to call home to say goodnight to his wife, only to have Henry Blanco answer the phone.
I know this has been done with Lou and Andy has the line on the home page but wanted to take a shot at it:
Could someone post the link to the Zambrano "Fantastico" video again? Thanks.
I didn't get to see or hear the game due to work, but I have seen the highlights and Zambrano was truly nasty tonight. Len had a nice call as well, haven't heard Pat and Ron's yet but I will get to it shortly...
I just watched the highlights, Z was dealing. I don't give a shit what Cecil or the Houston fans think. 73 out of 110 pitches were strikes. He hit 98 in the 1st and stayed mid 90's with his fastball throughout the game. His slider was on. Regardless of where this game was played, that kind of stuff gives Z a good chance of throwing a no hitter.
Had Mr. Moneybags (and Selig) not been such a douche, the game could have been played elsewhere. Z still would have been covered in steak sauce and win.
Also, Sweet Uncle Lou is a smart man:
Quote"We were talking before the ballgame about 90 pitches," Piniella said of the limit for Zambrano, "but I told [bench coach Alan Trammell], 'If he's got to come out of the game, you go get him. I'm not.'"
I love it how everybody that was crying and bitching last week about how they're not going to make the playoffs and how they hate this team and they're choking and all that bullshit now thinks they're the gretest team in history and blah blah blah. Now you know why Zambrano doesn't merit a splooge thread; because half the time, he deserves a fuck-you thread, instead. Z has become an all-or-nothing guy the last two years, he might be the highest variance SP in the league.
I don't trust that consistency at all in a short series, I hope Lou makes Dempster his #1 for the playoffs, Demp has been the most consistent starter this season.

Now you know why Zambrano doesn't merit a splooge thread; because half the time, he deserves a fuck-you thread, instead. Z has become an all-or-nothing guy the last two years, he might be the highest variance SP in the league.

In addition to that, I don't think the players care that much about the regular season anymore. It is approaching fait accompli status with regards to the division. Their minds are elsewhere.
Plus, there was bound to be added pressure on Z coming off the no-no.
I still remain comfortably perched inside my apartment. In fact the window is closed, the blinds are drawn, and the ledge is out of view.

Maybe I don't understand what all or nothing means, but I don't think it means 32-18 with a 3.70 ERA, a .235 BAA and a 1.30 WHIP
Maybe I'm just an idiot though.
Oh no wait...that's you.

I haven't been on the ledge all season. The only time I even thought about gazing toward the window was during that late July series against Florida. Milwaukee had tied the Cubs, and were winning their Sunday game while the Cubs were down five zip to Florida. The Cubs came back to win, Milwaukee spit the bit, and then the Cubs swept the Brewers. I believe Andy wrote a Dose about this back when it happened. No really.
Since then, I've been fartin' in silk, without a care in the world, just waiting for October. You "gutless cocksucker" types are a rather sorry bunch.

To clarify, how about "shithole Pissburgh apartment?"
Bwuce Levine said that Z had to fly down to Venezuela Wednesday for his grandmother's funeral, and didn't get back in until late last night. Apparently, his legs were pretty cramped from the flight, which helps explain some of the debacle of his start. It DOESN'T explain why Marshall didn't just take the start (although maybe Z forced Lou to start him).

Was Z flying coach? Big guy should be flying on someone's jet. Doesn't
someone have a private jet for the kid? John Cusack? Eddie Vedder? Mark Cuban?
Marshall should have been given the start. The result may have been the same minus the aggravation.

Why he loves the Cubs: I grew up in the era of Ron Santo and Billy Williams and Ernie Banks and all those great players, and we all kind of got hooked thinking they were gonna win, and they didn't and then it was too late. We were all hooked. I was anyway at least.
Favorite Cubs moment: Seeing Carlos Zambrano's no-hitter a couple of weeks ago has to rate as tops.

And I don't know what's wrong with the sentence because it has a capital letter at the beginning and there are sentence-joiners like and, then, they, and and, and then he has quite a few commas that let you know when to pause while reading. Which leads to finally a period in the back.
But, yeah, as an editor-in-chief or a website in which he apparently is the only writer, he's no match for the
Assumptive Reader editor, and much better, too, than Al.

When I was in college, one of my friends joked with me that I would never be anything in the journalism world until I could become a Senior Executive Managing Editor-In-Chief. This was before I switched my focus to radio, but I guess it would be a good goal. Or something, yada, yada, yada...

And so it begins.... (http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/chi-100218-dan-mcneil-cubs-column,0,3896814.column)
QuoteThe Cubs need a healthy Lilly as much as they need Carlos Zambrano to get his act together.
QuoteEven if Zambrano fit comfortably in 34-waist pants, I wouldn't trust him. The Cubs didn't in 2006 when they settled on a one-year deal to avoid arbitration with him before they caved and signed him to a long-term $91.5 million deal in August of 2007.
In the last three seasons, Lilly has won 44 games to Zambrano's 41, while both posted 26 losses. You can trust Lilly to pass on craving oohs and aahs from on-lookers with tape measure home runs in batting practice at Coors Field when he's nursing a bad back. He's compliant when he needs treatment.
Win thay gonna trade that spic bum!?Q?!!?

I guess I should also point a couple other things out:
QuoteAnd the pressure is on Zambrano now more than ever. The staff is missing its most-prized asset until at least May. Tom Gorzelanny, Sean Marshall, Jeff Samardzija (who's still learning on the job) and maybe the reborn Carlos Silva are vying for spots in Lou Piniella's rotation. That leaves Randy Wells, with one year of major-league success on his resume, as the Cubs steadiest starter.
Who killed Dempster?
QuoteNo worries. Sam Fuld was in camp several days before he was required. And he will be among all of those Cubs on the top step of the dugout when the scrimmages commence. It's all for one and one for all.

Since he has been starting again: 1.84 ERA, .605 Opponent OPS. 3-0. I'd love it if he gets to 10 wins after starting approximately 3.75-4 months for a shitty baseball team. Fuck the naysayers. Also, 3 of the 5 games in this streak were against playoff caliber teams.

True.. That was one of his downsides, but his season was really efficient last year. His walk rate was 4.15 (per 9), which is just above his career average, so really we should expect a high number of walks. He did get his K-rate up over 8 per 9 innings for the first time since 2006. It was actually a better season than his 2007 season in which he won 18 games and was 5th in the Cy Young voting. His major downfall last year was the shitty team. His RS/IS (Run Support per Inning Started, which only figures innings in which he was actually in there, not the entire game, which can include times he's not in there) was 4.1 per 27 outs, which is by far the lowest in his full-time starting career. If the team had been worth a shit last year, I think his numbers would look pretty nice.
EDIT: Really what I'm saying here is that 2009 was a pretty good season still. This abortion has made me feel bad about my love for him. If he's a stud next year, I'll forgive him for a shitty run this year. The rest of his career has still been pretty awesome despite what people like Kaplan think

.013 points is going to be a lot to make up over a month, especially over 4 other guys. And then if you factor in Tulowitzki and Infante, they have a chance to easily pass him, given their relative low number of plate appearances, so that could mean he has to pass up to 6 guys. It'll be tough, but it would be nice if he could do it.

.013 points is going to be a lot to make up over a month, especially over 4 other guys. And then if you factor in Tulowitzki and Infante, they have a chance to easily pass him, given their relative low number of plate appearances, so that could mean he has to pass up to 6 guys. It'll be tough, but it would be nice if he could do it.
What does that have to do with Zambrano being awesome?
His season was really efficient last year.
Plus: Since he has been starting again: 1.84 ERA, .605 Opponent OPS. 3-0. I'd love it if he gets to 10 wins after starting approximately 3.75-4 months for a shitty baseball team. Fuck the naysayers. Also, 3 of the 5 games in this streak were against playoff caliber teams.
Gotta love ya some Z
I hope he pitches well. So his trade value goes up this offseason.
Great burn. Carlos Zambrano is really good.
I won't compromose.

Yeah, why would you want to get rid of the guy who missed half the season because he was forced to take anger management classes?
If you can't depend on a guy like that, who can you depend on?

Because he's good. And you're not. And if you can't get anywhere near equal value for him, you're better off letting him pitch on your team. By the way, your team is really bad.

I didn't say I didn't like zambrano. I just don't see this team doing much any time soon, so why not trade him while he's pitching better and get something out of him? You probably think we're gonna win the central in 2011. That's bonkers Apex, even for you.

I think "we" would have a better chance of winning the Central with Zambrano on "our" team than with the collection of dickweeds "you" could get for Zambrano and his contract regardless of the numbers he puts up in the next four weeks.
If they are able to deal that contract for young(er), cheap(er) talent that makes the team better and frees budget to improve it some more, I'd be conflicted but I'd get over it. However, if they simply cave to the meatheads and deal him for other bad contracts that do nothing of the sort, well fuck all. And what makes anybody believe they can deal that contract for anything other than old, expensive flotsam? Who's really fucking bonkers here - besides Z?

You're probably right. Once they make the playoffs next year, they are gonna need their ace to strike fear into the hearts of the other team. Win or die tryin' type stuff. Garbanzo beanz can't fill that role. Plus, we should honor his contract, it shows that this organization is loyal and that will only help attract big time free agents, like Adam Dunn.

In conclusion, Apex's stance is:
Mark Prior - misses a bunch of games with actual arm and shoulder injuries - TOTAL FUCKING PUSSY WHO BETRAYED MY CUBBIES
Carlos Zambrano - misses a bunch of games because he threw a tempter tantrum - Z's BACK AND IT'S ALL DOUBLE RAINBOWS FROM HERE ON OUT!

You can't do that because I already won the thread. But the fact that Mark Prior no longer pitches in the major leagues and Carlos Zambrano does quite effectively for long stretches makes me really confused about what you even mean.

All aboard Murton's unicorn!
If Mark Prior never got injured and pitched like it was September 2003 everyday for the rest of his life, Dusty Baker would still be the Cubs' manager and Lou Piniella would be Dick Stockton's partner in the booth during the Cubs' 2007, 2008 and 2009 National League playoff runs.

If Mark Prior never got injured and pitched like it was September 2003 Carlos Zambrano everyday for the rest of his life, Dusty Baker would still be the Cubs' manager and Lou Piniella would be Dick Stockton's partner in the booth during the Cubs' 2007, 2008 and 2009 National League playoff runs.
Sack'd up.
Cutting through all the bullshit, I guess my only points were that my irrational man-love for Z is gone, and I don't give a tin shit if he gets traded in the offseason.
My only real points are that I love Carlos Zambrano for everything he's done for the Cubs. And I can't know right now what the Cubs will look like in 2011. But if anyone wants to ensure that they will suck as bad as you fear they will, they can start by trading Carlos Zambrano for whatever the market would be for a guy with his contract and mileage on his arm.

Bump.
You fucking turds.
Castro bumbles the 88 hopper from Fat Prince to cost Z the shutout. On his way of the mound Z pats the kid on the shoulder several times to tell him all is well. In addition to blanking the Brewers for 8.2 innings surrendering just 4 hits with 9 Ks, Big Z was 3-4 with a run and RBI. I just don't see why you'd trade him now when there is absolutely no way you'll get fair value in return. Anyone who thinks they should has a vagina.

What if he gets traded for several pieces of shit? I won't cry but I will fucking rage. This team and its fans are turning more bitch-made every time I turn around. Heard Steve Stone saying they need to change the culture of the team starting with Z. Sure, dump the guy who actually showed up in the playoffs and was so sick of losing that went and lost his damn mind in the dugout. Replace him with Dandy Randy Wells. Yay. FUCK that.

Profit????
If the Cubs can drain the Yanks' farm system, they should go for it. Maybe they should also give Cashman the opportunity to RIGHT THAT WRONG and bring back Soriano.
If the Yankees re-sign Kerry Wood, 16% of the Cubs 2002 active roster (plus Larry Rothschild) could be in uniform at Yankee Stadium Opening Day. Should the Cubs have just held out eight years with this bunch?
I don't want Z traded. I love him so much and I know that leads me to overstate his abilities, which are pretty fucking good but not HOF like I frequently tell myself. I just can't get behind the idea of trading him. I also am in great fear over what the Cubs would get back. That goes back to my overstating how good he is but if they don't get a HOF second baseman out of it, I call it a fail

That goes back to my overstating how good he is but if they don't get a HOF second baseman out of it, I call it a fail
I'm sure the Cubs can flip whatever prospects over to the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs for their manager.

Then we take that money and invest it all in a good bullpen arm. Or a second baseman. Profit.

How many years left on it? I suppose when I think about it going forward, zambrano probably won't factor in to the 2014 WS run so doing this will help make that happen. I should just sever ties with Zambrano now and hate him like the rest of the Cub fans. Probably make my life easier

Two years, $36 million. It vests for 2013 at $19 million if he finishes top-2 in the 2011 Cy Young voting or top-4 in the 2012 Cy Young voting.
So, two years, $36 million.

Am I high or did that Daily News article sport a headline stating that Cashman will likely target Carlos Zambrano with no mention of Z in the body whatsoever?

I believe it's the 2002 magic they're bottling. Corey Patterson, Mark Bellhorn, Bill Mueller, Todd Hundley and Jeff Fassero can all be had for a reasonable price. It'll be tricky getting the Gladiator and Fred McGriff signed, however. I wish Brian Cashman and Hank Steinbrenner the best of luck in this endeavor.

Yeah, if Z gets traded the team's not going to run out and spend that money. It doesn't look like they can afford to.
I mean, our new first basemen's one year contract is being paid on a 3 year installment plan. Maybe they can put a starting pitcher on layaway?
What prospects do the Yankees have that anybody would want? Should we be excited?

I know you're not being serious, but if the Yankees would somehow take Z's entire contract, the Cubs should be happy taking back nothing in return.
How do you know that? The man's unstable, Eli. If the Cubs trade Z his thin grasp on sanity will disappear and he'll spend the rest of his days in a padded-room crafting Zambrano-Milton Bradley fanfics.
I love Carlos, I do. But like Eli said, if the Cubs can rid themselves of him and get the Yankees' retarded bat boy in return - game on
So what is Hendry going to spend the $36 million on?
Is the answer "a 5-8 middle infielder and a couple of shitty veteran middle relievers"?

Quote"It was a long travel day and Hurricane Ike," Astros manager Cecil Cooper said. "That's what I put it on. That and having two days off. I'm not saying he wasn't good."
Cecil, you classy bastard!
I couldn't find more on the Astros complaining about going to Miller Park 9 years ago, but something struck me as familiar as I watched the highlights of the Rangers-Astros:
Texas wore their home uniforms and used the home dugout at Tropicana Field and the Astros wore the road uniforms and used the visitors dugout.
Sounded familiar (http://bleacherreport.com/articles/58030-a-message-to-the-houston-astros-please-shut-up):
QuoteCecil Cooper, the manager of the Astros, talked to Bud Selig about the situation, expressing his unhappiness that the series had to be played in Milwaukee. "I told him how frustrated I was at the situation", he told mlb.com.
The manager wasn't alone in his frustration. The players were obviously dissatisfied, wearing their road jerseys and using the visitor's clubhouse at Miller Park in a protest that no one would acknowledge. They claimed it was a matter of convenience. I bet.
There were more than just non-verbal statements about the team's sentiment. The players made it perfectly clear in media interviews.
"I can't believe our home fans would cheer that lustfully for the Cubs", Lance Berkman quipped. "I said 'wait a minute. Why are our fans cheering for the Cubs?'"
From yesterday (http://m.mlb.com/news/article/251297702/astros-wear-road-uniforms-against-rangers/):
QuoteST. PETERSBURG -- Very little about the surroundings on Tuesday night suggested that the Astros were the home team in the opener of their three-game set against the Rangers, a 12-2 loss to Texas. From the backdrop of Tropicana Field to their place in the third-base dugout, it felt like any other road trip to Central Florida.
Even the uniforms insinuated their role as that of visitors.
The Astros sported their road grey uniform pants and a dark blue alternative jersey typically reserved for home Sunday games. Why the unorthodox look? Frankly, they had no other choice.
"It's all we had with us," manager A.J. Hinch said.
The Astros had been on a brief, three-day road trip for a series against the Angels, one which took place during Players Weekend. That meant bringing nothing more than the special jerseys worn over the weekend, plus the alternate tops that are sometimes worn by players and coaches during batting practice or bullpen sessions.
"We literally had three days; I took a carry-on," Hinch said. "We basically flew in pajamas for the red-eye flight we took to Anaheim, had the three games and then we flew back. It was a red-eye flight and we were sort of mocking the red-eye flight, so they don't even have the one extra set of clothes you normally would have had on a flight."
Hinch said that once the Houston airport reopens, the team might have its regular home uniforms shipped to them in St. Petersburg for the remainder of their time playing at Tropicana Field.
The Astros also chose to set up camp in the visiting clubhouse despite their stature as the home team, choosing the familiar -- they love the clubhouse staff and are accustomed to the surroundings from their annual trips to play the Rays -- over the more spacious digs of the home side.
Surrre, they love the staff, etc. The team has totally changed: all the players have changed, the leagues have changed, the nemeses have changed, the neutral site has changed, even their red-ass Lance has changed (Berkman to McCullers, Jr.). But they're still the Houston Assholes.
And yes, the Traveling Secretary deserves to be fired for not insisting the team bring extra luggage on the road trip Thursday night with a hurricane bearing down.

It also frosts me that the Rangers are getting shit on for not bending to the Astros' whim and switching home series, which would have screwed no one but their own fans. The Rangers offered to host the series, play as the road team, give the Astros 100% of the proceeds, and coordinate a hurricane relief fundraising effort. The games could have stayed in Texas. Instead of reaching a great compromise for all involved the Astros bitched about not getting their way and sites like Deadspin dutifully took up the task of crapping on the Rangers for it.
Joe Sheehan also had a great analysis of this situation in his newsletter. Anyone who wants to see it, ask, and I'll post it.
In conclusion, fuck the Astros. I am now rooting for the Cubs to sweep their dumb asses in the World Series.

Correct. But if they do make it, the "Astros redeem Houston after Harvey" narrative would be so insufferable by then that I would be begging the Cubs to sweep.
This is from Ken Rosenthal at the Athletic:

What happened Thursday night with Verlander is not entirely clear. As a player with 10 years of major-league service, five consecutively with the same team, Verlander had the right to veto any trade. MLB.com’s Jon Paul Morosi reported that the pitcher’s first choice was the Cubs, and that he wanted to exhaust that possibility before agreeing to join the Astros. Astros owner Jim Crane, speaking to reporters, said of Verlander, “He was a little reluctant and eventually made the right decision.”
Haha! Verlander didn't even want to go there! "Reluctant," ouch. And what a douchey, condescending quote from Jim Crane, too.

I dunno. That just sounds like the kind of thing you'd have to say when you get asked why someone initially didn't want to play for your team.
I wonder what persuaded Verlander to say yes. My guess is someone pointed out the hit his reputation might take if people decided to slander him for turning down Houston in their hour of need or whatever.

Turns out it was the Astros guaranteeing him a full no-trade even though he'd lose his 10-5 rights by changing teams, and guaranteeing his option for 2020 instead of requiring it to vest with a Top 5 In Cy Voting 2019 season. In other words they basically bribed him with 22 million dollars. I'd have said yes too, Justin.
