I think it was a joke about how he just seems so unremarkable and white while doing rather remarkable things. Earlier in the season my friend nicknamed him Ghost Runner because it seemed like he was always on base yet we mostly had no recall of him doing anything to get there, but that was back when he was mostly walking and hitting for no power (The Ol' Heyward) in April before he went into God Mode.
An anagram for Ben Zobrist is BRONZE BITS which I assume Ben has chunks of in his stool.
In his last 22 games, he's got a hit in 21 of them. The one game in which he didn't get a hit was game 2 of the SD Doubleheader where he didn't come in until the 8th inning. He still got a hit that day, so 21 consecutive baseball days with a hit. During this stretch, .438/.515/.688/1.203 slash line. He's decent.
So, here's a thing. Anybody want to guess who had the highest bWAR in the whole AL in 2011 (http://www.baseball-reference.com/awards/awards_2011.shtml#ALmvp), and yet finished 16th in the MVP poll, with just 2% of the vote and seven points?
Is it just me that didn't know this?

Yep. Even if you expand the timeframe to 2009-current, he's still 4th. Or 5th if you want to include pitchers.

Yeah, I just took out 2015 because it was a pretty injury-riddled year for him.
He's been atrocious the last 6 weeks...a .311 OBP since June 1 ain't cutting it.
By comparison, the justly-maligned Jason Heyward has been getting on base at a .370 clip in that same time frame.

He had a really bad stretch to start the season too. Maybe he's just streaky. Maybe he and Heyward both need to move down. Maybe Javy needs more playing time so old man Zobrist can rest more.
Hopefully Good Zobrist is back for the rest of the year.

Now that I think about it, I can't honestly say that there was only one hero. Zobrist? Sure. Schwarber? Sure. Bryant? Sure. Baez, (especially for defense)? Sure. Hendricks? Sure. The whole damn team...? Don't mind me. I am still giddy.

I'm going to hazard a guess that no previous World Series game has ever seen 3 different catchers drive in runs for one team.

It really was an incredible team effort. I think they drew Zobrist's name out of a hat to give him the MVP. They just as easily could have awarded it to Schwarber, Bryant, Russell, or Rizzo.

I enjoy the people asking why Joe could be so stupid as to play Zobrist over Baez as though Zobrist was not a 4 win player last year, mostly at 2B, who also won world series MVP, and also forgetting that Javy just had a two error game Tuesday.

Ehh he doesn't look all that different than he did last April/June/July. He's still getting on base even as he isn't hitting. If this lasts another couple of weeks I'll start to worry.
I did enjoy when one of the BP Wrigleyville guys (who has kind of always dislike Zobrist because he was mad they traded away Castro) asked "was 2016 worth 3 years of declining defense/production" and the rest of Cubs twitter basically responded with "fucking yes, you moron"

Nah it was Stan Crewsett. Castro was his favorite player and they traded him and he pretty much decided that day to shit on Zobrist whenever possible.
He was also very fond of Jorge and when that trade was made he basically ranted about how Davis was clearly hurt and Jorge was too valuable etc.

Yeah, I think Stan is a young dude who gets attached to players he's followed for years, and then rather than just admit "I liked that guy and I am sad he's gone" he just goes over the top in his criticism of the player they acquired instead, thus Zobrist, who hadn't really shown any signs of decline at all in 2015 was basically old and decrepit, and Wade Davis was somehow the injury prone person in a trade for Jorge Soler.

He was also very fond of Jorge and when that trade was made he basically ranted about how Davis was clearly hurt and Jorge was too valuable etc.
Yes, Jorge is such a durable baseball player. Hard to imagine him losing any time to injuries. How's he doing this year anyway?
Yeah, I think Stan is a young dude who gets attached to players he's followed for years, and then rather than just admit "I liked that guy and I am sad he's gone" he just goes over the top in his criticism of the player they acquired instead, thus Zobrist, who hadn't really shown any signs of decline at all in 2015 was basically old and decrepit, and Wade Davis was somehow the injury prone person in a trade for Jorge Soler humorless cunt who becomes legitimately unhinged over the most negligible shit, like when people have the temerity to not only pronounce Latin incorrectly wrong but to create nicknames based on said mispronunciation.
I fixed that for you.
I mean I try not to judge the dude for being upset about things like that, if he's a latin guy whose been annoyed his whole life about people just mispronouncing his name and not even caring I can understand if he has a weird prickly response to that kind of stuff.
That said he's also condescending and humorless about literally everything else so, yeah.
Fuck that dumbass cunt bitch
How do you guys really feel about Stan Crewsett though
I like him.
I'm assuming this stems from the years of frustration you've endured with people not knowing how to correctly pronounce your last name.

I have an irrational hatred that is petty and dumb, but he's pretty insufferable, so I feel vindicated by it. I enjoy the hatred

He's a good writer and he often has good insights into minor league players and other stuff, he's just so condescending to anyone he disagrees with that I eventually stopped following him. On the other hand I assume literally anyone I have ever disagreed with says the same about me.

Zobrist slash line in August:
.278/.360/.430/.790
... and the last week:
.304/.360/.652/1.012
I think it's safe to say that Benny is over his injury and feels well and truly alive.

Read something the other day on twitter about how before he went on the DL for the wrist injury his avg exit velocity had tanked big time. When he came back the exit velocity was back to normal but he was hitting more grounders than he usually does so he still wasn't getting results. Since the end of July pretty much all of GB/FB/Exit Velocity numbers are lining up with his career averages. It would be very awesome if they had 2016 Zobrist back in time for the playoff run since if memory serves he was a fairly useful hitter the last couple of postseasons.

Gold Glove voting is pretty suspect. My only guess is that Zobrist had more chances and fewer errors at 2B than El Mago.
Bump for the game winning hit but also for hitting .260/.365/.387 on the year. The slugging isn't super sexy but that's not why he's here. Having vintage Zobrist and his OBP back is huge for the top of this lineup, and it's a pleasant surprise since I think most of us had written him off as finally going over the hill last year.

It's funny, I feel like he's always seeing a lot of pitches, but his pitches/PA is 3.66, which puts him in the middle of the pack among Cubs' non-pitchers (https://www.foxsports.com/mlb/chicago-cubs-team-stats?season=2018&category=BATTING+II&group=1&sort=15&time=0&pos=0&qual=0&sortOrder=0&splitType=0&statID=0).

I feel like he's actually swinging more often at pitches early in the count than he used to because teams are trying to take advantage of his tendency to take pitches by sneaking fastballs over on the first or second pitch.

I was always frustrated with Sandburg who almost never swing at the first pitch. Consequently, that pitch was almost always a mid 80's fast ball over the middle of the plate and Sandburg would be down 0-1. (
writing this seems kind of silly given that Sandburg was one of the most effective Cubs' hitters in my lifetime)

It obviously works for some hitters who are extremely patient and extraordinarily disciplined and know they can work a count full or at least see 4 or 5 pitches anyway, but I think in Zobrist's case one way to get around some decline in power as he gets older is to just take that first hittable pitch and swing at it instead of taking it in the hopes of getting another mistake later in the count.

Oh I was actually celebrating him hitting a first pitch RBI double when I posted that, based off our earlier discussion of how swinging earlier in the count seems to be working for him
Jacked one out last night on an 0-2 hanger.
