I just got an Apple TV.  For some stupid reason, they expect me to keep my iTunes client open on another computer while it accesses my library on my NAS in the basement.  If I turn off the laptop with iTunes, I can't get into the NAS or my music and videos.

Stupid?  Yes.  This also trumps the bullshit about being energy efficient...  So stupid.

It has no hard drive for local storage and is a streaming device.  What did you expect?

Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if they fix that at some point so ATV can access the library without using iTunes.  Front Row on Mac OS X used to launch iTunes in the background when started, but then they updated the app so it can access content directly through the iTunes Library database file without launching iTunes.  Anyway, to sum up, they're working on it.

Incorrect.  8 GB's on board...

For caching purposes only.

There.

Do you really need all 8 GB's for caching?  Seems as if the capacity could be used for more than caching...  I don't think other devices use that much for caching, do they?

Maybe that's room for apps at some point post-SDK.  Not content though.

Apple + Verizon (stage 1?)

http://www.loopinsight.com/2010/10/14/verizon-att-stores-to-sell-ipad-starting-oct-28/

QuoteApple and Verizon on Thursday said the iPad would be available at Verizon stores beginning October 28.

Verizon Wireless will offer three bundles, all featuring an iPad Wi-Fi model and a Verizon MiFi 2200 Intelligent Mobile Hotspot. The iPad Wi-Fi 16GB + MiFi costs $629.99, the iPad Wi-Fi 32GB + MiFi is $729.99, and the iPad Wi-Fi 64GB + MiFi costs $829.99.

Verizon Wireless is offering a monthly access plan to iPad customers of up to 1GB of data for $20 a month. In addition, Verizon Wireless will also offer all three iPad Wi-Fi models on a standalone basis.

Verizon said the MiFi 2200 is small enough to fit in a pocket and allows customers to create a personal Wi-Fi cloud capable of sharing the high-speed Internet connectivity of the Verizon Wireless 3G Mobile Broadband network with up to five Wi-Fi-enabled devices. The MiFi's rechargeable battery provides up to four hours of active use and 40 hours of standby time on a single charge.

AT&T will also carry the iPad in its 2,200 stores, the companies announced on Thursday. This really isn't a big surprise since the companies have been partners with the iPhone for a number of years.

All iPad + 3G models will be available from AT&T beginning October 28. AT&T's plans also include access to the company's more than 23,000 domestic Wi-Fi Hot Spots.

Possibly a start to limited 3G plans too?

Ok... so suppose I were considering purchasing an iPad.  Those of you that have them : is it worth ponying up the extra cash for 3G?

Or you could consider the Samsung Galaxy Tab. Side-by-Side Comparison.

I'm somewhat prefer the smaller size. And I hear it will be compatible with all service providers

The Samsung's price here has not been announced yet, but there are hints that it may cost more than the iPad if you don't buy it with a contract from a particular carrier:

Coming to Verizon store near you...

Apple iPad: 1GHz, 16GB storage, 256MB RAM, 1.5 lb, 9.7-inch IPS LCD display (132ppi resolution) with 3G connectivity (GSM or Wifi-only bundled with Verizon CDMA MiFi) and running iOS... $629 w/out data plan

Samsung Galaxy Tab: 1GHz, 16GB storage, 512MB RAM, 1 lb, 7-inch IPS LCD display (170ppi resolution) with 3G connectivity (separate GSM and CDMA models)... $599 w/out data plan

Anyone who buys based on specs alone deserves what they're stuck with using. For $30 more you get a bigger screen and proven tablet OS, without battery-sucking and poorly performing Flash. Not to mention a robust selection of apps dwarfing the shitty V-cast apps (which probably can't be removed, though I could be wrong on that) and whatever other paltry options are out there for it. Really the only thing that sets it apart is the camera, but taking pictures is why you have a smartphone. What interests you about the Tab?

Nothing, really.

I'm mostly interested in how, despite conventional wisdom having them charge a brand premium on their devices, Apple's hardware is in reality almost always competitively-priced for the specs.

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/btl/apple-ipads-rivals-cant-hang-on-pricing/41163

QuoteThe alleged iPad killing tablets are coming, but with price tags that aren't going to even come close to denting Apple's lead.  When Apple CEO Steve Jobs launched the iPad it wasn't clear how aggressively these newfangled devices were priced. Now we know because Android tablets and other rival tablets can't hang on pricing.

In recent days, tablet pricing details have emerged. To wit:

* Samsung's 7-inch Galaxy Tab will run you $499 for a Wi-Fi version (top right). That price matches Apple's iPad pricing and Samsung is packing in some key hardware features. But Samsung isn't likely to move the needle on thwarting Apple.

* ViewSonic announced its ViewPad Android devices (bottom right). The ViewPad 7-inch version will run you $479. The 10-inch version will run you $629. Both versions are Wi-Fi with no 3G.

* The HP Slate 500 has Windows 7 will cost you $799. Even though the HP Slate is geared for business use, there were plenty of chief information officers with iPads at the Gartner powwow last month.

* Will Research in Motion's pricing on the PlayBook even be in the ballpark? We don't know yet, but it's unlikely.

These prices illustrate how aggressive Jobs was at the iPad launch. Apple had the device and the pricing to arguably grab at least an 18-month lead.

Internets have it that tomorrow Apple will announce the addition of the Beatles' catalog to iTunes.

And that you'll never forget it.

But in a crappier format.
