Am I the only one who thinks whether someone can keep their pants zipped and their wicks dry doesn't make anyone better or worse at their job (unless they're a priest)?

If you can't keep your commitment to your spouse, what assurances can you give that you'll be committed to your constituents?

I can't really get worked up about his marital problems as such.

Indeed, my sense that this a is a private thing and none of our business is only reinforced by skimming through his mash notes to the mistress.

I mean, sure... insofar as the man may have taken it upon himself to judge other couples' personal commitments to one another (yes, the gays) as unworthy of the rarefied status he's apparently taken for granted, fuck him.

But beyond that, his conduct within the covenant of marriage is something between him and his wife.

His conduct as the chief executive of his state, however, is another matter.

Traveling to a country 5000 miles away without so much as informing those in charge of his safety, anyone else in the government or even his own staff is pretty fucking irresponsible for someone whose job requires them to be on call 24–7.

And he never would have done this if he hadn't been trying to keep his infidelity under the radar.

The joke of it is, The State had clearly been working up a story on this affair for months. Chances are, it was going to come out eventually in any event. And yet, he managed to turn what should be a private issue into a reckless dereliction of his office.

The marital problems can be an indicator of future behavior, risk-taking, etc, so for me, they play into my confidence in an elected official.  As well, you expose yourself and others in your administration to blackmail and or undue influence from outside sources.  I would love to think that personal dalliances should be private, but unfortunately, that just isn't the case for public officials.  He obviously wasn't capable of making this a solely private matter.

Unfortunately, just because guys like this are hypocrites (and disgusting too), doesn't take away from their arguments for or against gay marriage, etc...  Separate issues to a certain degree, and a logical fallacy to connect the two.

That being said, I don't need an elected official to tell me who they think should or should not get married.  The fact that hetero married politicians can't keep their dicks in their pants isn't exactly helping their cause either.  I support the right of two adults of sound mind to have a marriage, civil union, or whatever; and I would like to state for the record that I cannot keep my dick in my pants either.

I think the points made in the thread about extortion and it leading to unnecessary risks are valid ones.

But more to the point, I think that it matters when you're a candidate heavy on "family" and "Biblical" values.  If his politics weren't, in part, about the sanctity of marriage, I wouldn't give a shit, but he's held himself to a standard through his stated beliefs, and he should be crucified on the cross he built.

Yah, but where are the free-love governors anyway?  (Put another way, since when does gloating demand rationalization?)

This.

I don't care what a candidate does in his personal life as long as it doesn't negatively affect his job. However, when a candidate starts with family values, the sanctity of God, and things of this nature that candidate should be crucified on said cross when affairs and such occur.

Say what you want about Ted Kennedy, but he's one of the very few pro-drinking-and-fucking pols left.

As far as a hypocritical politician? I'm gonna need CT's fainting couch for that, whether it's Larry Craig's wide stance, Algore's carbon footprint, Sarah Palin's Arctic Socialism, or John Edwards' slaves.
