Character Count Overflow Bonus: or, Found When Forced to Stalk the Internet for Al Yellon's DOB...Writing to Superman: Towards an Understanding of the Social Networks of Comic-Book Fans (https://www.academia.edu/2451310/Writing_to_Superman_Towards_an_Understanding_of_the_Social_Networks_of_Comic-Book_Fans):
QuoteIn June 1970 Action Comics #389 published a letter from the fourteen year old Alvin Yellon of Highland Park, Illinois complaining that the letters column was "monopolized" by Vartanoff and others because the editor had a bias for "intellectual" letters. In her letter in Action #393 October 1970 Vartanoff took Yellon to task for this assertion. She informed him, and the collective readership, that her and other letters were chose because:
QuoteWe work on them. We take the time to be legible, coherent, polite, humorous, and, hopefully, intelligent. All that isn't enough, though. Plenty of "intellectual" letters never make the columns. If someone else happens to write a more thought-provoking letter that month, ours are rejected with the same indifference, as would be a smudgily penciled, unsigned 'I hate yourmag' card. Those are the breaks.
What Yellon may have thought of this take down is unknown since he never seems to have written to a comic again rather shifting his attention to Sports Illustrated where he had a letter published on May 20, 1974 (Yellon 1974).
$29.76, or best offer. (http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/201250882263)
QuoteIn Action #395 December 1970 Arelene Lo dedicated a poem to Yellon and his ilk who she suggested if "not a master of the written word, or a great literary critic who can point out obscure parallels or do detailed character analysis" then they might try some doggerel verse... The April 1971 issue of Action contained a letter from Martin Pasko who responded with his own poem name checking creators like Denny O'Neil, Mike Friedrich, Gardner Fox and John Broome, thanking Arlene Lo, and saying it was time for a change of subject before someone like Yellon wrote again.
Pasko writes (http://silverage.greatnow.com/reviews/Action_Comics_399a.htm):
Quote...
But before an Alvin Yellon type—or a hundred more like these—
Take pen in hand, enough's enough! Change the subject, someone please!

Was just coming here to note that someone has purchased the copy I linked to on eBay. As an internet acquaintance of mine is fond of saying,
solid.
My bid at transcribing Ye 14-Year-Old Future Editor in Chief's missive:
QuoteDear Editor:
I would like to write an open letter to Martin Pasko, Steve Carlberg, Loren Lieberthal, Joe Rusnak, Dave Truesdale, Irene Vartanoff and all you other lettercol monopolizers: You may have read DC's longer than I have, you may write more "intellectual" letters—in fact, MORE letters—than I do. But the fact that they get printed is not your fault. Guess whose fault it is? That's right, Ye Editor's. The fact that their letters are more "intellectual," etc., is no reason to let them MONOPOLIZE the "free" lettercolls from us "poorer" readers.
—Alvin Yellon, Winnetka, Ill.
(We've never seen anything in the Bill of Rights that says everyone who writes in has to have his letter published. We pick the best, most thought-provoking letters, and don't notice the signatures till we put 'em in the mag. And yours was... well... one of the most provoking letters we've received.—Ed.)
* * * * * *
So, this is the first ever documented instance of Al writing an open letter? I truly enjoyed the fact that he states in the first sentence of a letter he is sending to be published in the letters page of a comic book that said letter is "open". What the fuck else could it be? If it was closed, it wouldn't be published.
Also for the record:
1. Al bemoans the fact that controlling editors (in chiefs?) use their power to monopolize the content of their comic book letters page and don't give him the freedom to talk about what HE wants.
2. Al declares that just because people have been reading DC Comics longer than him, that this doesn't make their opinions on DC Comics more valid than his.
At long last I have found it - the internet's Perfect Irony. I hereby resign my position as arbiter of ironic things. The next time you have a question, please refer to this incident (and Al's ensuing career on the internet) and you should be able to judge for yourself.
Good night, and good luck.

It's like witnessing a super villain's origin story. Except in this comic, the super villain doesn't care about money or super powers or world domination -- all he wants is to make sure people could read/publish non-intellectual comments and ban anything resembling intellect.

I thought Thrill would start having difficulty in maintaining the high level of quality which he brings to the presentation of his annual Desipio Dead Pool since expectations have grown so great etc.

What Yellon may have thought of this take down is unknown since he never seems to have written to a comic again rather shifting his attention to Sports Illustrated where he had a letter published on May 20, 1974 (Yellon 1974).
My own morbid curiosity (http://www.si.com/vault/1974/05/20/616107/19th-hole-the-readers-take-over)...

PUNISHMENT
Sir:
I just read the story about outrageous puns in SCORECARD ("Organ Stops and Desist," April 29). Sorry about this, but here is one more from a diehard Chicago Cub fan:
Reuschel on down and see the never Frailing Cubs. Start a Hooton and a hollerin' as much as you can. They're sure to beat the Cardenals and the rest of the National League clubs. With a Mitter like wald's behind the plate, how can they lose? Anyone can see they have the division title Mad-locked up (as well as Lockmaned). Monday or any day of the week the Cubs will win. You'll be seeing Morales of them come October.
ALVIN YELLON
Highland Park, Ill.
He's gotten worse since then.
That is literally one of the worst things I've ever read.
I restrained myself from posting that one. Figured it might be a bridge too far (and that Chuck might try to take credit for it anyways).
Nah. You got all the credit.
(I meant you'd take the credit for Al's puns. Something something Dead Parrot.)
Has anyone (or Google Alerts) brought this to Al's attention yet? "I still think the editors were wrong. Harrumph. BANNED."

1. The Arnhem reference made perfect sense to me at the time.
2. Yes, from "Snooze," which features a superior version of "Show Me the Way" to that on the LP.

There were easier pickings (http://www.cbc.ca/news/aboriginal/makayla-sault-girl-who-refused-chemo-for-leukemia-dies-1.2829885%5B/url)* in this realm, mind you.
* "Traditional, alternative treatments" means Brian Clement in Florida, who
was on my candidate list. Next on his roster is Laurie Hill's daughter (http://news.nationalpost.com/2014/10/16/judge-says-forcing-aboriginal-girl-to-stay-in-chemo-is-to-impose-our-world-view-on-first-nation-culture/"). Say, Thrill, did I once pick Thomas Szasz?
The guy from Batman?
I'm so glad someone cooler than me made that reference. I've been sitting on it, ashamed of my own geekery.
Ha ha! You're not the only one...

A quick look shows no record of him.
Phew, thanks. He's dead, by the way.
Three years dead, apparently. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Szasz)
You would begrudge my claiming the points or at least bitching that I was only a year off?
I only have so much to cling to.

You people with your sense of decency or humanity-- this is deadpool.
Seriously, though. I do (and will) feel really guilty about that pick. I'm not rooting for it to happen (but I'm pretty confident it's going to happen).
Get fucked, CD.
