Title: Live Music
Post by: Yeti on August 16, 2011, 11:56:32 PM
I thought about posting this in the Summer Shows thread but this wasn't in Chicago. So, instead I have created this thread......

I'll reserve judgment until I hear Huey's 18-year-old cousin's opinion.

Fuck Huey's cousin nephew.....

Er, I mean, whatever.

I'm not waiting for some snotnosed suburban country poser's impression of the dreamy Luke Bryan. Dude can rock a cock off

Modern country music sucks. The old stuff was cool. "Some Girls" was probably the last great country album.

I don't know about that. The "American" albums were generally soul-stirring, bone-chilling good country songs.

The only country music I'll listen to is Neko Case and that's not even really country. My friend's brother is Jamey Johnson. He makes respectable country music but I won't listen to it. It just doesn't do anything for me.

Jamey Johnson is more like Merle, in terms of writing, than he is most crap out today.
At least he drinks and writes songs about being a letdown.
Stuff that country songs should be about.

As long as they don't do something stupid like make them the second act at The Congress on Friday.

This lineup blows away Lolla and Pitchfork put together.

The problem with so many good bands is that someone has to play those slots though, going to be hard to avoid..

I saw the Avett Brothers on Wed night -- outstanding performance. Hopefully will be getting tickets to their show in Toronto at the end of the summer. Unintentional highlight of the night: the couple sitting behind us who very obviously bought the tickets months ago, before they'd broken up, who were arguing about their failed relationship. To add insult to their injury, it turned out that their tickets were actually to the previous night's performance, and they got booted from their seats during Head Full of Doubt/Road Full of Promises.

Carter USM are back together and touring, and they've just announced the support for their Brixton Academy gig in November: Ned's Atomic Dustbin (http://us1.campaign-archive2.com/?u=3d87f020058178d4314f37fe6&id=635086282b).  I saw Carter once before at the Academy, years and years ago, supported by Inspiral Carpets but this might be even better.  Who's up for it?  I can get accommodation in London for anybody that wants it...

I don't know (nor really care) if The Dropkick Murphys are a Desipio-approved group (even if they once were), but have any of you seen them live? They are going to be at a venue in Champaign called the Canopy Club. I saw Yonder Mountain there earlier this year and it was a fantastic venue... Based on that, I saw go, but are they worth the $32.50 price (more likely $45 after fees/taxes)?

I saw them like a decade ago. I seem to recall enjoying myself. In spite of the skinhead who tried to punch me in the nuts.

But, really... $45? Think of how many ringtones you could listen to at home for that money.

The Dropkick show I saw about a decade ago was pretty damn good. Except for the hippie with slammin' hair that I tried to punch in the nuts.

But that was Pre-Tessie Dropkick.

Nope.  Quite apart from the whole geographical difficulty and the issue of expense, I'd literally rather have my piles lanced than listen to Prince.  If Prince were playing in my back garden, I'd draw the curtains.

2 nights, 2 cities, 2 very different venues, 4 hours of music. The Avett Brothers can rock a dick completely off

That explains a lot.

Not sure if rock is the correct term. Folk a dick off, maybe.

Bore a dick off?

I would have gone there but didn't feel like ranklin' - so thank you.

I wasn't sure if I wanted to be so bitchy, but someone has to keep the standards for "rocking a dick off" higher than middlebrow Starbucks music.

I saw on FB that yeti took a lady friend. I just assumed she bit his dick off.

Potholes on 55?

meh. Their studio stuff may be kind of calm and all. The last two albums have some great, fun, quick songs. Also, their live shows, extremely fun, energetic, and fast paced.

I mean, I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but just throwing it out at "middlebrow Starbucks music" is short selling it.

Also, their album debuted at #4, so I kind of get the dislike

To say people judge music based on chart standing is insane. That would imply that I actually look at charts.

Seriously. I judge music based on how not-boring it is.

Also, their cd is on sale at every Starbucks I've been at lately. And is middlebrow.

I wasn't sure if I wanted to be so bitchy, but someone has to keep the standards for "rocking a dick off" higher than middlebrow Starbucks music.

#4 on the Starbuck's metal and latte charts.

To say people judge music based on chart standing is insane. That would imply that I actually look at charts.

Seriously. I judge music based on how not-boring it is.

Also, their cd is on sale at every Starbucks I've been at lately. And is middlebrow.

You've been to Starbucks recently?

I know they are probably uncommon in Hilljackistan, but yes, I have.

In a city where Dunkin Donuts are aplenty? For shame, sir. For shame.

When he found out you can pour Dunkin Donuts up your mass?

Now I won't get into the whole Avett thing, but it was a great concert.  Not only did they "rock out", but Northerly Island is by far the best outdoor concert venue around and probably top 3 venue in Chicago.

Pinback was great in San Diego.  Any of you people still listen to Pinback?

I enjoyed their Metro show in November (http://www.desipio.com/messageboard/index.php?topic=5822.msg261400#msg261400), but it was definitely a change of pace from past shows of theirs I've been to.

How so?  This was my first.  Has Rob Crow not always performed The Worm during Fortress?

The previous two times I've seen them it was much more low key, with both of the guys seated the whole time. The first time, I don't even recall them having a drummer. November's show was much more of a straight up rock show. Not necessarily worse or better. Just different.

Kurt Vile (http://www.lincolnhallchicago.com/Shows/05-14-2013+Kurt+Vile+and+the+Violators), anyone?  I got a couple of tix. Really looking forward to this show.

Also, anyone here a fan of Sigur Ros?  They're playing UIC in April.

I think there's a law that says Stars has to play every festival.

Despite Jon's protest I reiterate this sentiment. Kresge is also a fantastic venue.

??? = Westerberg and Stinson together (sans Mars), or so the story goes.  Wish I knew which night that was going to be.

Palladia has been showing a 1995 Mad Season concert for fans of Alice in chains, pearl jam and/or screaming trees, following the reissue to above. It's magical.

Some friends of mine from Nashville - Smooth Hound Smith - are playing Schuba's tonight, and they're fucking excellent.

If you've got nothing better to do, and I'm guessing you haven't, go and see them (http://www.lh-st.com/Shows/08-26-2016+Smooth+Hound+Smith).
