Title: BOBBY SCALES' POP-SHOT-INDUCING CALL-UP THREAD
Post by: Tank on May 04, 2009, 05:02:04 PM

QuoteThe Chicago Cubs are expected to activate Iowa Cub utility infielder [BOBBY SCALES] today, and this time he's even going to get a uniform.

Sure, we may be losing Z to the 15-day DL.

But think of how much we'll gain.

Arizona governor Jan Brewer is expected to issue an emergency boner alert for the greater Phoenix area sometime this afternoon.

Other than the birth of my daughter and my wedding day, this is the greatest day of my life.

More good news.

"News: Carlos Zambrano is out two or three weeks after being placed on the disabled list due to a strained left hamstring. Cubs manager Lou Piniella said the team plans to call up right-hander Randy Wells from Triple-A Iowa on Friday to take Zambrano's spot in the rotation at Milwaukee. "

I'm not sure I understand why this is good news.
What was the alternative?

Bobby gets his first major league start as Lou puts one of his spring training lineups out there against Lincecum.

QuoteGathright, CF
Miles, SS
Fukudome, RF
Lee, 1B
Hoffpauir, LF
Fontenot, 3B
Scales, 2B
Hill, C
Marshall, P

Oh, and Lou said Marmol and Gregg aren't available. Heilman is the closer.

Where's the outrage over the Giants lineup?

F. Lewis LF
E. Renteria SS
R. Aurilia 1B
B. Molina C
A. Rowand CF
R. Winn RF
J. Uribe 3B
E. Burriss 2B
T. Lincecum P

Seems like 3 runs should be plenty to win.

HE'S STAYING!!!! HE'S STAYING!!!!

http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/cubs/1564103,CST-SPT-cubnt08.article

QuoteTo make room on the roster for pitcher Randy Wells to start tonight, the Cubs plan to send speedy outfielder Joey Gathright to the minors this afternoon -- if he accepts the assignment -- when the waiver period on him expires, sources confirmed Thursday...

The immediate beneficiary appears to be infielder Bobby Scales BOBBY SCALES, the career minor-leaguer who made his major-league debut Tuesday at 31. When Scales joined the club Monday, he gave the Cubs more than one backup infielder left of first base for the first time this season.

Edited to correct spelling of BOBBY SCALES.

.385/.385/.538 and playing a serviceable 2B/3B.
Considering 2 of the 3 starts have come against Lincecum and Gallardo, even more impressive.

4ks in 13 ABs is a little worrisome without a walk, but I'd say the initial results have been quite acceptable.

Bobby Scales can play anything he wants to, okay?

He did play 3 games at SS for Pawtucket in 2007, plus when they first brought him up, PAUL SULLIVAN mentioned he was taking grounders at SS.

I mean, not many guys can play 2B/3B and SS...who are you looking for, Ronny Cedeno?

.385/.385/.538 and playing a serviceable 2B/3B.
Considering 2 of the 3 starts have come against Lincecum and Gallardo, even more impressive.

4ks in 13 ABs is a little worrisome without a walk, but I'd say the initial results have been quite acceptable.

His biggest flaw is that he can't play short.

Andres Blanco.

While Scales surely can't maintain his 1.214 OPS (realistically, one should expect it to regress to the 1.000-1.075 range over a full season), it's cool to see him up and getting some big hits.  Go Bobby.
