His DFA-ing can't be far. He's been brutal since the ASB, and Maddon has no tolerance for his straight as an arrow fastball.

He seems to have a great deal of tolerance for it actually

Yeah, I'm not really sure what he's watching. Motte's had 51 appearances which is second only to Strop (54). Joe seems to tolerate his "straight as an arrow fastball" quite a bit. He's throwing it 76% of the time this season. More than he has in any season since 2009.

Not-so-Fun Fact: Motte somehow has the second most wins on the team (tied with Lester at 7).

He's no longer using him in high leverage situations and has a very quick hook with him.  Hopefully he's not long for this roster.

Not that he's the only one to blame for the debacle that is this series, but he's sure done his fucking part

On a positive note, it's really nice to see a team that doesn't just roll over when they get down. To the offense's credit, they've continued to put together good AB's and hits, even hit some dingers(!).

If the bats and pitching can all click at the same time, this team will be something to watch in October.

So will Fargo, The Walking Dead, and Manhattan. Those are also things to watch in October. But the Cubs are also on that list probably.

The fact they never, ever give up is absolutely the best thing about them. This series sucked but oh well. It cost them one game vs the Giants. Their playoff probability is still hovering around 80%. The offense has been hitting all second half, the pitching is obviously better than they showed the last two days. Atlanta's offense is pretty dreadful, should hopefully be a good series for them to work out the kinks.

The second best thing about them is that this is probably the worst Cubs team of the next 70 years.

Right.  I have heard that the team 67 years from now is going to be a doozy.  I can hardly wait.  was that too much of a CBStew comment?

No Jason, don't go, you're so good at baseball, how will we make the playoffs without your  precious wins (http://m.cubs.mlb.com/news/article/144691458/jason-motte-racking-up-wins-out-of-the-bullpen) ... alright, he's gone, he couldn't hear me. Good riddance.

For what it's worth, if some rest gets his average fastball back up to 97 like it was in June he can maybe get away with that fastball only bullshit again. Once it started to dip down to 94ish over the last month he was predictably smoked.

I always enjoy when a reliever gets to 10 wins, just for fun

That said, my supposed skinnier doppelganger (All bearded dudes look alike) can take his time getting back

Between him and Haren, the trade deadline wasn't great for the Cubs. And it hasn't even mattered.

Indeed. The nice thing about having a crappy fifth starter and some crappy middle relief is that basically everyone else has a crappy fifth starter and crappy middle relief.

I also enjoy that Joe lined it up so Haren would be a sacrificial lamb to Chris Sale and Bumgarner. Win the games where Jake Arrieta and Jon Lester give you a decided advantage, and then you're basically playing with house money when Haren starts. If by some miracle you catch the other team on a bad offensive day and win 1-0, cool, if not you've hopefully already taken the series behind your good pitchers.

At this point you're hoping for Grimm, Strop, and Rondon to be the only relievers you see in a game that matters - if relievers are needed at all. Assuming that if the Cubs get into an actual playoff series we'll see at least one or both of Hammel and Hendricks and that's terrifying. Hope the bats stay hot as it gets colder out.

You think Haren stays in the rotation over Hammel?

No I think he's implying the Cubs do Arrieta/Lester/whoever is the hot hand between Hammel and Hendricks/off days/Arrieta or Lester on short rest.

I'm guessing Dan Haren doesn't sniff the playoff roster.

Yeah Haren would have to show remarkable improvement to pitch in a postseason game.

Either that or the Cubs move their games to the Grand Canyon.
