OK A-holes.  It's fixed.  Enjoy the orange links, because I have no fucking idea how to change them.  I basically learned scripting in four days to fix this damned thing. - Andy

Bobby Scales on NPR May 15.

My favorite part was when she read his stats, clearly having no idea what any of it meant.

Hey, boss.  It's NPR.

Some NPR hosts actually do positive baseball.  I don't know which ones, but there have to be a few.  Right?

ESPN goes to the #1 Cubs fan to get the real scoop:

http://sports.espn.go.com/travel/news/story?id=4146914

At least they didn't mentioned his stain of a blog.

Now they're doing "scouting reports" for the minor league affiliates?

Really?

Dear only site,

If you have an iPhone or iPod touch, and you have a stand, which model did you get and is it any good?  I really like the Podium, but $68 might be too much for a plastic stand.  (Yeah and $350 is probably too much for a music player, whatever.)

If this matters, I have the 32GB iPod touch.  (Refurb.)

What is the point of the stand?

It's for when you get a seemingly good Youporn video that was just shot at a bad angle.

Exactly.  It also makes a handy secondary monitor for keeping track of the Cubs on the MLB At Bat app.

Somehow Al saying "that's what she said" just doesn't seem right.

Good news for all of you reprobates.  Bacon cures hangovers!

QuoteMs Roberts told The Mirror: "Bingeing on alcohol depletes neurotransmitters too, but bacon contains a high level of aminos which tops these up, giving you a clearer head."

Researchers also found a complex chemical interaction in the cooking of bacon produces the winning combination of taste and smell which is almost irresistible.

The reaction between amino acids in the bacon and reducing sugars in the fat is what provides the sandwich with its appeal.

Ms Roberts said: "The smell of sizzling bacon in a pan is enough to tempt even the staunchest of vegetarians. There's something deeper going on inside. It's not just the idea of a tasty snack. There is some complex chemistry going on.

"Meat is made of mostly protein and water. Inside the protein, it's made up of building blocks we call amino acids. But also, you need some fat. Anyone who's been on a diet knows if you take all the fat from the meat, it just doesn't taste the same. We need some of the fat to give it the flavour."

She explained that the reaction released hundreds of smells and flavours but it is the smell which reels in the eater. "Smell and taste are really closely linked," she said. "If we couldn't smell then taste wouldn't be the same."

Sounds like the study was an excuse to spend the research funding on booze and bacon.  Nice gig if you can get it.

What about the part where he compared Soriano's swing to Hank Aaron's and made the startling revelation that Hank Aaron not only was a better hitter, but he struck out less too?

DPD.  I muted Jon'n'Joe 3 innings ago, thanks to freebaseballradio.com.

Pen, did you ever decide on a camera?  At some point, I think we're going to get one, and I love solicited advice.

I did indeed.

We ended up getting the Canon HF10.

I don't know why Amazon is listing it for $999, you can get it elsewhere for like half the price.

The good: It's very, very easy to use, compact (about the size of a can of soda/pop/Coke).

The one "bad" thing so far is that the files are really big. I took a 2 minute video of my daughter that I wanted to send to the grandparents. When I went to view the file on my computer (transferring from the camera is really easy on a PC running Vista or XP) the file was 150 MBs, shot in SP (which is the 2nd lowest of 4 quality options, though still HD).

The software that came with the camera let me convert it down to an MPEG but it was still about 16 MBs, too big to email.

So basically, if you want to share any videos more than about 30 seconds, you're going to need to upload them to youtube, which is fine, just not what I originally anticipated...though at least it spares me the hassle of having to explain to the over 60 crowd how to open Quicktime files.

I have a very similar camera, the Canon Vixia HG21.  It's the one with the 120GB HDD.  For the video size issue, in addition to dropbox, I recommend the free MPEG Streamclip.  Export your video as MP4 H.264, lower the resolution if necessary, and use the data rate limiter.  Type in a number and it'll show you the size of the resulting file, which will let you fine-tune it.  It also has a preview function you can use to make sure your data rate isn't so low that the video quality becomes total crap.

Thank Gord baseball is back, especially after the abortion of the playoffs last year.

Not sure what you're referring to, everyone knows the playoffs were cancelled.  In fact, they were never conceived.

What's with the Herald calling Al a "news director"?  There's a big difference between a technical director, which is what Al does, and a news director, who runs the entire news department at the station.

I wonder if Al will attend this Gong Show (from Elliott Harris' column today):

• For those hoping this is the season that the Cubs win their first World Series since 1908, there will be a ''Cremating the Curse'' ceremony April 5 from 2-7 p.m. at Michael's Funeral Home, 800 S. Roselle Rd., Schaumburg. Comedian Tom Dreesen will emcee the event with Sam Sianis, Ronnie ''Woo Woo'' Wickers and former ballgirl Kathy Wolter among the celebrities scheduled to attend. Further information is available by calling George Rawlinson at (847) 902-3664 or e-mailing g.rawlinson@sbcglobal.net.

"Former ballgirl"?  "Celebrity"?  Was the fill-in cotton candy vendor from section 236 not available?

I can't wait to hear how the spots for your Dirty Talk line of cards and this one sound like.  I would listen to jazz just to hear them.  "If your to-do list goes like Dinner, Movie, and You, there's only one greeting card to tell that person how you feel!"

Voted.  I didn't watch the other videos because I already know who should win.
