Title: 2015 Desipio Baseball League
Post by: PenFoe on February 03, 2015, 10:28:30 AM
League has been renewed with invites sent to all of last year's teams.

Draft date has been tentatively set for Sunday, March 29th at 8:30 pm Central time (there aren't a ton of great options available for times on that day.)

League settings remain the same.
Keeper deadline is a few days prior: March 26th.

As usual, everyone will be made co-commish so you can enter your keepers in the system.

Or post them here and I will do it for you.

Not sure if CD has his big spreadsheet of keepers and rounds, but feel free to post if you do.

I'm very excited about my young offensive players, but my pitching makes me want to set myself on fire.

Blurrrrgh.

Simmer is now in.

Oleg wants in as well, so we'd need one more team to make it 12.

Oleg and new team would get no keepers, but would get the first two picks, per history.

Any takers?

I was thinking about expansion. The first two picks is great and all, but doesn't really mean a whole lot. I think expansion teams in the draft should have the option to "keep" some set number of picks (maybe 4-5?) from the pool of players that are unkept by other teams?

For instance, if I decided that I was not going to keep Yoenis Cespedes in the 5th round, Oleg would have the option to pick him up with his 5th round pick.

Given that I've been a poor owner, I would be open to relinquishing my spot to Oleg.

I don't really *want* to do that. I feel like the Cubes' relevance will keep me interested all year. I'd rather get another owner in (DT20, anyone???), but if that's how it has to be, I could accept it

I'm totally fine with this in terms of how expansion teams could keep players.

I'm just skeptical that we have enough more owners who are interested, considering we already have a few that are borderline.

Expansion's fine with me, I think we all could use our share of however many millions of dollars we charge for the expansion fee.

Does anybody have the draft list from last year?  I need it to figure out what round I actually picked these stiffs in.

Are we still wedded to the idea of having RF, CF, LF, OF, OF or can we discuss just starting five outfielders (or however many we start)?

Alright, with two new teams coming in, let's flesh out the expansion plan.  I actually think we did this once before, but I can't remember.

Spitballing:
I'd like to not limit the keepers that current teams can include, since the pool of guys is still substantial out there.
Let's for sure give them picks 1 and 2 this year, but then also allow them 5 keepers from the pool of free agents.  We can slot those guys from rounds....13-17?

Also, to allow for more time, we should bump up the keeper announcement deadline for current teams to next Wednesday 3/18.

Thoughts?

In general, I like the old MLB expansion rules. Existing teams protect a set number of players (1 or 2). Expansion teams take turns taking players from the existing team's un-protected players until the expansion teams get to their protected limit (was it 4?). No existing team can lose more than one player.

No team loses worse than their 3rd best player. No team loses more than 1 player.

Each team can have theoretically 23 keepers from their 25 man roster. You keep a player by opting to draft him two rounds earlier than he was taken in the prior draft. Free agent keepers are drafted in the 13th round. If you're keeping two players who would be kept in the same round, you'd keep one of them in the next lowest round.

So they're picking keepers from the season-end list of un-rostered players? In rounds 13-17, regardless of draft position last season?

I'm just throwing shit out there that doesn't involve me losing my players, okay? I'm aware it makes no sense.

Better idea:
We each protect 5 guys.
They then draft up to 5 guys each, no more than one from each team.

We then go back and keep any of our players who were undrafted in the expansion draft.

Then, for the real draft, the team who got the first expansion pick gets the 2nd pick in the first round (and vice-versa.)

Does that work?

Working on the spreadsheet of rosters and keeper status. It'll be done by tomorrow AM.

We currently have just RF, LF, CF and then 1 UTIL slot.
I like keeping it like this because I think it forces a lot more strategy than just OF. Also, since so many guys have multiple position eligibility I don't think it's that big a challenge to fill it.

But, I'm not falling on my sword for it either, so open to discussion.

Only a meathead would want just generic OF slots.  Who's a meathead here?

What's this about expansion?  Let's do it.  Did you guys tell them about the ante?  If they want some of my keepers, then that's gonna cost them 5 more bucks.  PER, if you catch my drift.

I think that before the studying commences, we need to know the keepers for everyone else, right?

Also, what does N/A mean? Does that mean that player cannot be kept? Or does that player just cost a 1st round pick.

One more for now: If I have two players who would cost the same draft pick (for example, two WW pickups), can I choose which player I keep in the lower draft spot?

OK. Players ranked W were waiver pickups? And they can be frozen with a 13th rounder, it appears? And Oleg has a good question. What happens if you want to keep multiple W players?

No limit.

If the player you want to keep was drafted (by you or anyone else) last season, you keep him two rounds earlier than he was picked last year. If he was a free agent pick up, you can keep him in the 13th round.

If you have two keepers in the same round, you'll have to choose one to take a round earlier—doesn't matter which. Three keepers in the same round, bump one of your choice up one round, another up two rounds. Etc, etc, etc.

Here is a doc with the final rosters and keeper status for each player.  (https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8ApAFv9NDn6SVY1REliWmF6Z0U/view?usp=sharing)

Chuck/Oleg - get studying.

Let's try to have the expansion draft by end of next week (after we figure out how many players we're protecting.)

Can you post the excel file?

You want me to post an Excel file in a Desipio post?

I don't understand this at all.

I posted a link to the Excel file.

I got it now. My reader made it look like it was a PDF and I couldn't cut and paste.  I've downloaded it and sorted it by keeper round as well. Thanks.

Let's for sure give them picks 1 and 2 this year, but then also allow them 5 keepers from the pool of free agents.  We can slot those guys from rounds....13-17?

So they're picking keepers from the season-end list of un-rostered players? In rounds 13-17, regardless of draft position last season?

I'm just throwing shit out there that doesn't involve me losing my players, okay? I'm aware it makes no sense.

Better idea:
We each protect 5 guys.
They then draft up to 5 guys each, no more than one from each team.

We then go back and keep any of our players who were undrafted in the expansion draft.

Then, for the real draft, the team who got the first expansion pick gets the 2nd pick in the first round (and vice-versa.)

Does that work?

Running with this idea until a better one comes along...

Would it also be worthwhile to make drafted, non-rostered players available in the expansion draft as well?

For example:
Cliff Lee was drafted in the 3rd round last year, but is not currently on a roster. Chuck or Oleg could select him in the expansion draft as a 1st round pick.

Guys not on rosters should either be excluded from expansion drafts or be at the same draft status they were the year before. No +2. If they weren't good enough to be on a team, they aren't good enough to be drafted +2. Moreover, what would we do about prospects?

I'm good with the expansion draft being just players off existing rosters.  You guys protecting 5 first seems a little harsh for us (our 5 best frozen guys would be no better than everyone else's #6 - I'd prefer you guys protect 2 or 3 before we pick our 1 from each of you), but if that's what it is, I'm good with that, too.

Okay, here's where we're at.

All league slots have been filled.
Draft order has been set (Oleg has the 1st pick in the draft, Chuck is 2nd.)

Timing:
- Announce who the 5 are that you are protecting (post them here, not on league site): 3/18
I will then update the spreadsheet, color coding the guys who are being kept and re-post that.
- Chuck and Oleg have expansion draft (either on Desipio or in SBox): 3/20-3/22 (As needed)
- Enter all keepers into system (either on Desipio and I will do it or enter them on League site): 3/24
- Draft: 3/29

Expansion's fine with me, I think we all could use our share of however many millions of dollars we charge for the expansion fee.

Does anybody have the draft list from last year?  I need it to figure out what round I actually picked these stiffs in.

Are we still wedded to the idea of having RF, CF, LF, OF, OF or can we discuss just starting five outfielders (or however many we start)?

My head is all meat.

I'm very much not a fan of limiting our keepers to five.  For two years I've been stashing young players on that shitty team I took over and I'm not only going to keep five of them.

We keep as many as we were going to and the new guys have to pick from what gets cut.  We all know that there are still good players available after the keepers are selected.  The purpose of a keeper league is to build a team over time.

So if you're an expansion team and your team sucks for a couple of years at the start--well join the friggin' club.  There should be no limit on keepers.  It's one of the very best things about this league.

Just to clarify - we're only limiting the guys you protect to 5.

Then the expansion draft happens, where you'll probably lose one guy.

Then you can go back and keep anyone else who wasn't taken.

So, basically you're going to keep everyone you want except for 1 guy who Oleg or Chuck will steal.

Simmer has until tomorrow, but his history suggests that we probably won't hear from him.

So, in case he doesn't chime in, I'm making an executive decision.

Starling Marte - 15
Victor Martinez - 13
Cory Kluber - 18
Alex Cobb 10
Rajai Davis - 13

That last one is really weak, but I don't see any other 5th guys that are really viable, so let's call it Rajai and move on.

Obviously Simmer has until midnight tomorrow to adjust this.

My 5 protected. God, this hurts.

Michael Brantley - 13th
Josh Donaldson - 10th
Corey Dickerson - 13th
Hyu-Jin Ryu - 18th
Jeff Samardzija - 19th

That's awful
Fab 5:
Mike Trout - 9th
Nelson Cruz - 18th
George Springer - 21
Jorge Soler - 13th  ugh, what a stretch
Aroldis Chapman - 10th

Strasburg - 10
Harvey - 20
Lester - 9
Moookie Bets - 13
Marcel Ozuna - 12

This happened a long time ago, guy who called me out.

Finalizing my protected 5.

Quick point of clarification: when we say that only one unprotected player can be drafted from each team, that's one total (rather than potentially one each by both Chuck and Oleg), right?

Assuming Chuck does get to this today eventually, let's just have him and Oleg draft back and forth in here.

Draft goes:

Round 1: Chuck, Oleg
Round 2: Oleg, Chuck
Round 3: Chuck, Oleg
Round 4: Oleg, Chuck
Round 5: Chuck, Oleg

If you don't want to draft anyone as the rounds progress, feel free to pass.

Draft needs to be completed by Monday to stay on schedule.

All keepers will be due on Wednesday.
Draft is Sunday

Please note that I am going to be in the mountains next Thursday-Sunday and I don't believe we have any internet access (TBD), so if you want me to input your keepers into the baseball league, please post them here before Wednesday.

Now Chuck...hurry the fuck up.

Ha ha.  Chuck's in your fantasy baseball league.

What the fuck?

You know we get $100 for the whole season, right?

Um... No. I figured it was for the week.  Oh well.

This is just the best.

I've never been in a "waiver bid" league before. I don't really care.

You can make $0 moves the rest of the way, so you're not stuck with guys.

Like Ervin Santana, you're not actually stuck with him.

OK. Unless you want to allow me cancel the transaction. Up to you guys.

I would say it's fine of the commish cancels it.  It's clearly just a fuck up and won't have any affect on the rest of the year.

Chuck keeps Russell Martin.

Waiver budget restored to $80.

It's plenty for the rest of the way, but includes a stupidity penalty.

I'm OK with that. And appreciative.  My fault for not bothering to ask.  Thanks.

Question: De we have separate reserve group for inactive/DL players or do we only have 7 total bench spaces?  Appears that it's just 7 inactives regardless of position.

Pen, you and Snork deserve one another. I hope you two get married and settle down in a rustic, turn of the century firebarn. With shoddy electrical. And it's built on an indian burial ground. In the middle of a food desert.

It's been a bumpy ride for the two of us, to say the least.

We've spent a good portion of the last four years together in counseling, but we somehow keep realizing that love will conquer all.

You're quite welcome. Thanks for the front row seats to the clincher. Sorry about the mess.
