LEGATRON!!!!

Suck it Detroit.

First-place Chicago Bears!  What do you think, guys?  Clean sweep?

CHICAGO
12/22 at Philadelphia (8 - 6) (beat Detroit 34-20)
12/29 vs Green Bay (7 - 6 - 1) (beat Detroit 22-9, lost to Detroit 40-10)

DETROIT
12/22 vs New York Giants (5 - 9) (lost to Chicago 27-21)
12/29 at Minnesota (4 - 9 - 1) (lost to Chicago 31-30, beat Chicago 23-20 OT)

I'm excited to see Jim Schwartz get fired. I really hope they fuck up the next hire because Schwartz, while disappointing to Lions fans, is still the best thing they've had since the disappointing Wayne Fontes.

Seems like disappointing is the ceiling for the Lions. Can't say I give a fuck.

I wish there was some way they could still get a Wild Card, save his phony baloney jorb and get their ugly asses to Soldier Field for the first round. His firing could be the worst thing that happens to the Bears. But then I thought that the Rod Marinelli hiring was bad news. Mariucci as well. Sooner or later they have to get one right don't they? Don't they?

I could see them going after Lovie. He'd certainly be better than Schwartz.

That would hurt my heart.

It sucks that Cutler is the only quarterback in the NFL who throws interceptions and he happens to play for our Bears. FML

DPD.  Ryan Roberts gets a minor-league deal and spring training invite, probably to compete with Darwin Barney at 2B.  He's a slightly better hitter than Barney, not that it's much of an accomplishment.

Cheap ass Cubs. They were supposed to sign us Brian Roberts. Fuck this off-brand Roberts.

The tattoo guy. I fucking hate this guy. I hope he gets valley fever from Steve Stone's old gay dick.

What's depressing is not that my playoff dreams for the Cubs next year are now totally shaken, I was pointing out the accumulation of Eli's last 3 months of posts about the Cubs and Bulls and the overwhelming and continuous theme of "this sucks."

What about the bulls and cubs currently doesn't suck?

This.

And Mirotic! Get excited chicago!

I'm pretty pumped about that guy, actually. He sounds like he's going to be really good whenever he gets here.

You just can't help yourself, huh?

I miss T.J.

I initially assumed you were kidding, but given your apparent emotional fragility, I'm not so sure.

He's yanking your chain, broseph.

I feel like the idea that Cutler getting paid will keep them from re-building the defense is misleading. For one, it sounds like the cap is going up to $127 mildo next year, which'll help, but also where are these great defensive free agents that are going to take up that much cap room going to come from?

I'm willing to bet I've spent more time staring breathlessly at lists of 2014 NFL free agents than anyone here and I don't think the Cutler contract is going to keep Phil from landing the non-existent great players who will immediately fix all of our problems. Can you think of many mega-deal defensive free agents in the last few years who've been worth the money more than QBs who got extended? The Peppers deal is the closest I can think of, and even that has it's major drawbacks, as we are seeing.

Considering the defensive money coming Off of the books, there should be more than enough to re-sign Cutler, keep the offense intact, and just accept that the defense is a multi-year project that will require draft picks and more moderate free agent signings (more like DJ Williams and whatnot) to fix, and thus won't require the massive cap space people think.

WE BUILDING A DREAM TEAM HERE

But seriously, I'd take Tambi Hali's deal over Flacco's.

True but Tamba was a team extending it's own free agent with considerable leverage in terms of tags and whatnot. Hali cost the Chiefs less than he would anyone else, same as Cutler will be cheaper for the Bears than he will be for anyone else, although certainly not cheap. I'm talking about wading into the murky waters of the NFL unrestricted free agent pool, where the odds are you're better off trying to patch holes on the cheap and try to draft your core players than to try and commit big money to 31 and older defensive free agents.

Like I said, if they're throwing tons of cash at 31 year old guys either way, I'd rather that money go to Cutler who plays a position that tends to age slower than most others besides kicker and punter. Especially considering that the howitzer he has mounted on his right shoulder kept guys like Favre and Testaverde playing long after their expiration date because they could lose a few miles off their fastball and still be able to make all of the throws required.

Cutler's franchise tag cap hit would be about 16 Mil. I assume his cap number will be in that range whether he's signed for one year or more. If they cut Peppers, Earl, Bush and Weems they save about 15. Nothing is fucked here except that they'd then have only 25 players under contract and be less than 45 Mil under the cap.

They should re-sign Cutler and McCown and then spend all the picks on defense. There will be a ton of guys making the minimum but at least they might have something to build around on D finally.

I would rather see Cutler play well in a Bears loss than see him play poorly or get injured in a Bears win against Cleveland.

Wait.  What?  How can you equate playing poorly in a win with getting injured in a win?  If the Bears win I don't care how poorly Cutler played.    And I don't care how good Cutler looks if the Bears lose.   But I don't want to see Cutler or anyone else injured, win or lose.

I believe, what Apex is saying, is that his desire for Jay Cutler to remain a Bear beyond this year (much of which is, in theory, predicated upon his performance the next few weeks) is higher than his desire for the Bears to continue a futile playoff run.

DING!

If all this ends with Cutler getting his arm ripped off and fed to him by the 49ers, I'm going to take a nap in the lake.

If Jay throws an interception on Sunday it's going to be a meatball apocalypse.

Or maybe when he throws his first interception.

There's probably going to be FAR too much weight put on these next few games, regarding Cutler's future.

Granted, that's what happens when you've played 5 uneven years, but still the opportunity for overreaction is off the charts.

It doesn't help that McCown's last start came against the #32 ranked defense in the NFL, and Cutler will be going against the #7 Browns. Even if he throws for a 240 yards and 2 TDs with a 95 rating or whatever that will still look bad in comparison to the THREE STRAIGHT 300 YARD GAMES FOR THE FIRST TIME EVAR (against the Rams, Vikings, and Cowboys. Hey did we mention he lost two of those games?) JOSH MCCOWEN.

As much as I want to go with the "McCown lost a few games" argument only the Vikings game was really maybe his fault. The defense has been horrible so to pin a loss strictly on him would be a bit unfair.

That said, he's just simply not as good as Cutler full stop. I'm looking forward to Jay taking what he learned from watching the offense and applying it to his hosecock of an arm.

Also, I really enjoy how angry this makes people like my brother.

What is your brother's take?

I'm not putting MCCOWEN in the same category as Brian Griese because of the Vikings loss, which was as much his fault as Trestman, Robbie or the defense but I'm using them in the same sentence out of spite.

Who have McCown's Bears beaten that's worth a shit?

You can only beat the team that's in front of you, son.

Except for the times you can't.

That's when you establish the run to set up play action.

Then you're more than 60% of the way to being on first down already.

This is absolutely staggering.

Sports for the Layperson: Complex Sports Concepts Boiled Down to Their Essence (Not Literally Boiled Down, That's a Metaphor (a Concept I Also Explain in the Book)) by Gil Gunderson.

I LOL'd.

As did I.

That is a very funny way to start my day.  Nicely done.

Which you started 60% of the way home.

Pretty sure the joke is supposed to be "which you started 60% of the way to work."

Since you start at home and then go on to work (or first base.)

I hate myself.

The only problem with RV's title is that Gil would have to then call himself out for using "literally" instead of "figuratively"

No, he clarifies that he doesn't mean literally.

Lance Briggs was on the practice field today according to Zaidman. Don't know if he literally practiced football or not. That part wasn't clear.

Sounds like Cutler is a go for Sunday. I haven't been this nervous for a professional football game in several weeks.
