Title: Ian Happ-ens To Make Me Tingle
Post by: PenFoe on April 13, 2017, 09:11:41 PM
5 homers through 8 games for Iowa.

It's going to suck to see him become a star for another team, but the front line starting pitcher he brings back should make up for it.

If Zobrist or Baez get hurt, you don't think he gets the call?

Far be it from me to defend Pen, but nothing he said indicates that he doesn't think that. If they have a long term injury where just using La Stella to fill in isn't an option, sure, Happ will probably get the call, but if you think Theo and Jed aren't increasingly likely to trade Happ for pitching you just aren't paying attention.

"increasingly likely"? I'm pretty sure Happ or Eloy don't go anywhere unless a guy who can move into Jake's slot after this season comes the other way. They've loaded up with gambles in Iowa's rotation, they only need one to pan out.

Should have clarified, I meant after this season. They've got actual Jake until just after Halloween.

SKO's "if you don't think it isn't increasingly likely, you're not paying attention" was a direct pull from an old Chuck line about Starlin. I don't think he actually thinks that about a Happ trade.

It was a Chuck quote but yeah I do think Happ's probably the centerpiece of a trade eventually. Unless Zobrist gets old fast and Javy regresses

A lot can happen in a season. Besides, Oleg's dream might finally come true and Schwarber gets launched for Chris Archer.

Sometimes guys struggle at the major league level and learn to adjust to how MLB pitchers are going to pitch them, because AAA has nothing left to teach them. Oh hey Javy what's up

Happ had a very short stay in AAA, he might be better served with another one. That 37.9% K rate is butt-ugly.

Exactly. 116 PAs in AAA and another 274 in AA. He's not ready. That last strike out yesterday even made Javy cringe. He's pressing on a team that's underperforming.  Bad combo.

Len and JD were talking about how Happ murders first pitches, but it looks like 0-1 counts aren't exactly safe either (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.fcgi?id=happia01&year=2017&t=b#all_count).

I'd also say 2-0 counts, but that's probably true for anybody.

Since Chuck posted this Schwarber has a 110 wRC+ and 5 dingers. Happ has a 120 wRC+ and 6 dingers. Both are still having some trouble hitting for average but overall I'd say Chuck is fucking wrong.

20 dongs for this kid. Did not see that coming. Not in year one anyway.

Twenty-nine if you include his AAA DONGS.

As cool as it is that this kid has reached 20 homers after getting called up I'm going to throw out some love for his 1st inning 2-out, 2-strike clean RBI single that earned back 1 of the runs that Quintana had given up right off the bat last night.  Every time this guy goes through a stretch of at-bats where he fans a bunch of times--like he seemed to've recently--I get ready to downgrade my expectations for him and then--*BLAMMO*-- he erupts.
