Title: Post #1908
Post by: forklift on October 26, 2005, 11:37:03 PM

As we get ready to begin Year 99 of No World Series, let's make one thing clear...

A goat didn't do this.

It was Babe Ruth in 1918 and 1932, Hack Wilson in 1929, Gehrig in 1935, DiMaggio in 1938, Hank Greenberg in 1945.

It was the Wrigley family not signing black players until 1953

It was Durocher in 1969 - 1972.

It was Jim Frey in 1984.

It was Greg Maddux & Les Lancaster in 1989.

It was Dusty F. Baker, the entire team (in game 6) and Kerry Wood in 2003.

It was not a goat.

It was not Steve Bartman.

It's time for Cubs management to get their shit together, and go out there and put together a champion. In the Manager's office, on the field, and in the front office.

I doubt that is going to happen as long as Andy McFail is around.

Dusty Baker should have been fired in the middle of last season, if not sooner. From Corey Patterson to LaBlow Hawkins, this organization is so slow to fix things when things are going wrong that I am really beginning to wonder if they ever can get the job done.

I just hope the Cubs can find a way to, at the least, sneak out a pennant win before Banks and Santo and Williams break the mortal coil... The fans deserve a win, but I almost think they deserve it more... You can just hear the almost-agony in their voices whenever they talk about not winning during their great but underappreciated (due to never getting a title) careers.

I have to believe that the White Sox victory will provide even more motivatation to the Cubs organization to bring a championship to the other side of town, and that when it finally happens (which it will, very soon) the joy and pandemonium that ensues will dwarf the white sox victory...
First things first, let's shake up the coaching staff for next year...oh wait.

About the only way I will feel better about all of this is if the Cubs announce Friday that Dusty Baker has been fired/has resigned/has decided to negotiate peace in the Middle East...

And, there you have it.  It's no coinkidink that these World Championships are a result of a massive change of direction.

The Cubs are a profit center and the source of programming for the tribune, nothing more.

What Fork said, except The Headphone Wearing Douchnozzle Whose Name I Will Not Ever Utter shares credit with the team.  His mental error was, after all, the antecedent to all of the subsequent horrific events.  Not that I advocate the guy being abused.  Simply knowing your spastic compulsion contributed to your favorite team's downfall is punishment enough; in fact, it's punishment worthy of a greek classic; my point is, you don't brainfart like that and get a free pass, in my calculation.

Anyway, time heals all wounds. I don't even care anymore about '03.

Unfortunately, the current time, such as it appears, is like a huge, festering, ongoing, open sore. There's no escaping the present, sadly.

I hope I'm wrong...of course, but....Yikes.

Agreed, but I don't want to have to choose.  It's not the ballpark's fault that we haven't won, and I really like Wrigley.  It the afore mentioned players/manager/GMs.

A thread with two '1908th posts' is the key to breaking the curse...

And speaking of Bartman, if you saw the Family Guy movie, you know it was Stewie's fault.  I think that's the first time I've not laughed at a Family Guy joke that everyone else thought was hysterical.  I threw shit at the TV.

Post by: Chuck on October 13, 2006, 11:34:32 PM
So. This is good bye.

I chose 1989 as my "Farewell to Chuck" as it represented my favorite Cub team of my now middle aged life.

The 1977 team was one of the first I really enjoyed watching.  Big Daddy won 20 out of the team's 81.  Sutter was in his prime.  Jose Cardinal and his leaping fro.  George "he's due" Mitterwald.  Steve Swisher.  Mick Kelleher.  60-40 and in first place until August.  What wasn't to love?

1984 was senior year in high school and The Mother let me and some friends celebrate the clincher in Pitt with a bottle of Brut (Joe Namath was not invited).

But the 1989 team was the first team where I really knew the team.  I'd known of Dunston since they'd drafted him.  Maddux was becoming a brilliant pitcher.  Dwight Smith and the Anthem.  Sandberg was my first favorite player that I understood WHY he was my favorite player.  Andre Dawson.  Red Barron.  Lloyd McClendon's three run dinger.  2 outs in the ninth down 2 to Bedrosian.  Jeff Pico and Calvin Schiraldi blowing a lead in the Astrodome.  9-0 losing to Houston a few days later.  Mitch Williams.  Juice Walton.  Don Zimmer.  And that was a young team.  We all thought they'd be good for at least a few years.

So, in homage to my favorite Cub team that I knew, I bid you farewell.

Now, for a new moniker....

Fuck you, Chuck.

I was a HS senior for the '89 season, which is why I don't remember it as well as the '84 team.  In '84, I was 12 and lived and died for the Cubs.  By '89, I had found girls, alcohol and a whole bunch of a other time-wasters that prevented me from following them as closely as I had 5 years earlier.

That said, fuck Jim Frey with his Mr. Magoo glasses for not being able to build upon his gidt-wrapped golden farm system and giving us more division titles.

I was a high school senior in '98.  But unlike Huey, I was a geek.  No girls, little alcohol, few time-wasters.  I probably watched or listened on the radio to 150 games that year.

By the time the playoffs rolled around, I was a freshman at a community college.  I skipped a speech I had to make in order to watch the one-game playoff.  When I saw the teacher the next day - a huge Yankees fan, I might add - he asked me what happened.  I told him the truth, and said "we give speeches every three weeks.  The Cubs make the playoffs once a lifetime."  He looked at me, nodded, and said "I understand."  I got to make the speech up at a later date.

Bump.

So Fork I, perhaps cultivating a germ of thought by Apex or simply coming up the idea organically on his own, STFU after post 1908 which, as any number, as looked at as a Cub fan in 2007, is one of the most depressing numbers to consider.  I remember in the early 80’s when they first came out with merchandised shirts that had “1908” written on them.  As an 11-year old who had just begun to learn about Cub history and thus only began to barely comprehend the absurdity of such a drought, I knew to be embarrassed.

To me, 1908's the number.  Not 1945.  Not 1969.  Not 1984.  So I appreciated our Uptown-bred Brooklyn expatriate friend for stopping his post tally at that point to the point of trying to honor it by by emulating it myself.  And so I did.  Then CT followed suit, although he didn’t post his ultimate post here, mindlessly leaving it in some obscure thread, to be sure.  It was almost Slaky-like in it’s mindlessness.

And then there was TW.  Insolent bastard that he was, our friend went out and made the post about him and went to 1,984 posts, like it was his year.  Hey man, I love the ’84 team, too.  They’re my favorite team, too.  In fact, I sit here confident that I would, at this moment without an instant of preparation and no access to information but that which is housed in my skull, kick most everybody’s ass in a trivia contest on the ’84 Cub season.   I can tell you, without blinking, who the Opening Day starter was, and that it clearly was NOT Sutcliffe, Trout, Eckersley, or Sanderson.  Or Chuck Rainey, who in ’82 was one out away from throwing a no-hitter at Wrigley Field until Eddie Milner broke it up, the first of three times in my Cub lifetime (1979+) that a Cub pitcher was in that position, the other two being Jose Guzman in  ’93, and Frank Castillo in ’95 which was in a game that I had attended and, in a fit of nerves on account of the tension in the game, approached Turk Wendell in the bullpen (it was very late September and it was a night game and so the ushers must have been asleep) and asked him to scoop up some of the bullpen dirt for me so that I could “dip” it like I had hear he did at the time.  Oh yeah.  When Huey was 23, Huey was all sorts of crazy... But Chuck Rainey was not the Opening Day starter in ‘84.  It was Dick Ruthven who took the bump in Candlestick Park, Ruthven of course having bee acquired for Willie Hernandez the previous year, Hernandez of course winding up in Motown, having himself a very nice year in ’84, winning the Cy Young and MVP.  I can name the St. Louis ctarter in the "Sandberg game" in '84 (Citterella).  I can tell you who the Montreal batter was who hit the line drive that went off of Lee Smith’s back, up into the air, and into Larry Bowa’s glove and then over to Durham for an insanely unlikely 1-6-3 game-ending double play, prompting Harry to wonder of this was “our year” (hint:  CT hates this guy).  I remember that they wheeled out Jack Brickhouse in St. Louis to help out with clinching-of-the-tie and that Joe Orsulakâ€"who had the only two hits in Sutcliffe’s gemâ€"was the final out for the clinching, and that Harry was caught off guard, (“Wha?  Oh!  The CUBS ARE THE CHAMPIONS!”), and Jim Frey could be seen running out to the field and stuffing his cap into his shirt.  These things I've known since I first saw and heard them happen in '84.

After TW’s reckless 1908-smashing, every one else subsequently felt that dropping their handle should happen in a year that was unique to them.  Chuck prattled on about an ’89 team that he was probably watching through weed-colored glasses in Iowa City, as the commemoration of that team only merely belies the fact that Jim Frey was busy dismantling the whole thing that he had stumbled into, ass-backwards.

TJ decided to go all Dennis Miller on acid, and stop at a year that was only monumental in his mind.  Who else would pick a year from the decade of the 1870’s and not pick 1871, the year of the Fire?

Fork II, rose from the ashes and looked to restore normalcy to the number, but then inexplicably went past it to 1933.  Now, 1933 is the year that my dad was born, but who knows what Fork's thinking?  I suspect he was commemorating the year in which his football team from New York got their asses handed to them by the Bears in the first official, standard NFL championship which took place, naturally, in Wrigley Field.

Bad Kermit hit 1908 and then ignited the “self-destruct button” and now no records prove he existed in the first place.

But I’m stopping here.  Again.  1,908 meaningless, self-absorbed examples of one moran's nonsense.  I’m even over my disappointment  at TW.   I thank him and everyone else here for making me laugh as often as I do while sitting at a computer, which is too much.  Thanks also to Andy for allowing this playground for cocksuckers to exist.

And Hoff's Puppies...I'll miss you most of all.

Andy's Dose reminded me of how eager I am for gamecasts to start.  I want to be the first to make a "I'd give my left nut for a hit" joke when Barrett comes up to bat.

Also, it appears I'll be hitting 1908 again soon, which means I need to acquire a 4th initial.

Ah the third screen name club.

How about CPT, Too?

There's enough options for thousands of posts: CPT, Too; CPT, Also; CPT, As Well; CPT, Additionally; CPT, Plus; CPT, Furthermore; CPT, Likewise; CPT, Withal.

1933 was the year of the World's Fair, titled "A Century of Wonders". Seemed to fit.

I for one am shocked at how pathetic you guys are how fast you guys go through screen names.  I've been a member on this board for a very, very long time and I'm not even half way toward 1908 or whichever number I'd be interested in choosing.  Get a life off the message board, losers.  Go you, I really think it's awesome that you guys post here so much.

This thread is as good a place as any for this, since Slaky's first claim to fame was the coining of "Aardsma."  See, Slaky posts a lot, so the 1908 thread has to be about him.  He has no life.  See?  Get it?

Anyway, I believe this is the first picture of the Aardsma in the dark side's uniform:

That's him in the center, next to some guy in a White Sox uniform.  Sorry.  He's the only one I recognize, unless the guy all the way to the right is Bobby Jenks' skinny little brother.

Well, I held out as long as I could.  Here is my 3,816th post.  It will not be as heartwarming and meaningful as some of the others.  It won't be a triumph of the human spirit, nor a salute to a man who, like Cal Ripken, just goes to work everyday, and wastes time on a messageboard.  I don't remember how I stumbled onto Desipio originally, but I think the first thing I read by Andy was a biting review and criticism of WSCR, and it got me hooked.  I used to check Desipio every day at lunch, hoping there was another Daily Dose (back when they were daily) to give me a little entertainment during the day.  Then came the gamecasts and the running commentaries everyday, and finally this fancy messageboard opened up, and it was good.  Many things have happened between now and then, most of them posts by Slaky.  I'm not going to document them, because you can just go back in the archives yourself and read about carlosno1fan and Paul and the tranny porn attack and all that other stuff.

Suffice to say, I like it here.  Despite your lack of support for me, you're a swell bunch, and I think I'd enjoy having a beer with just about any of you, and hopefully I'll get that chance sometime.  You can never have enough people to drink beer with.

So here's to the most incoherent, rambling, piece of shit 1908th post ever.

Mine.

Well, here we are.  Again.  I was going to stop at 1989 (because I'm insolent) but I just can't seem to get past the 84 Cubs as my favorite team ever.  Why?  Well....

Bob Dernier.  He's my favorite Cub.  Ever.  I know, I know...  I like to keep the bar nice and low.  84 was his best full season.  He was a marvel to watch in CF and I swear, every single home run I saw him hit barely made it into the basket.  He was a joy to watch on the bases too.  It certainly didn't hurt that I played CF in those days and was also fast.  I do suspect, however, that I had more power.

Ryne Sandberg.  I don't think I have to go on about how good he was in 84.  You all know it already.  Let me just summarize by saying "teh ablls."

Steve Trout.  I'm not really sure why.  He had a pretty good season, but nothing spectacular.  But I always seemed to catch him pitching.  He was money in the postseason though.  And he was lefty.  I always wanted to be a lefty.  Maybe that's it.

Rick Sutcliffe.  Who didn't imitate his pitching motion?  If you lived in Chicago you did.  16-1 (20-6 overall) it was the best season I had ever seen.  In fact, it was the best season a cub pitcher tossed until Prior's 2003 (how Kevin Tapani went 19-9 is beyond my mere mortal comprehension).  He was the greatest Cub pitcher I saw until Z showed up.  Plus now he's golfing with Bill Murray and helping George Clooney solve that thing over there.

Jody Davis.  Jody Davis was an average catcher with a girls name.  But he gave my little brother a bat he cracked in BP.  Nice gestures like that will get you a spot on my list.

Lee Smith.  For the life of me, I can't figure out why they let him go.  So help me if you try to make me remember I'll put a plague on both your houses!  Lee was the best closer in the game.  He was intimidating on a Dave Stewart level.  You don't see that much anymore.  Batters don't like to face certain closers, but they aren't afraid of them like hitters were with Lee Smith.  He would slowly saunter to the mound and make the batter sweat the at bat before the at bat even started.  It was grin inducing.

Harry Caray.  Who didn't love his calls?  He was the last voice of the fan.  You can't find a game called like he called them.  It was validating to know that I had some of the same opinions as someone who had bbeen in the game for a long, long time.  Now if you rip a team or player on the air, they boot you off the charter or threaten you in an elevator.  I miss him.  I miss him more than I curse him for marking Chip Caray possible.  Sometimes, your mic is best left in your pants.

And finally.....

Wrigley Field.  The best place to catch a game.  Fuck the stereotypes.  Cub fans, real Cub fans, can hold their ground versus any other group of fans.  They are just as knowledgeable and probably more passionate.  It's a time warp watching a game there.  You can almost picture it being 1908.  It's the same stadium my grandparents went to.  Screw the new stadiums and their sushi and concourses and malls.  this is where baseball should be played.  I saw my favorite game there (not in 1984 though.  It was at 8/8/88.  Yes my favorite attended game was 3.5 innings long).

So I'm calling it quits at 1984 again.  TW-Gone.  James Westfall-Gone.    3968 posts in the books.  Maybe I'll get to end my next career at 2007.  If not, there's always next year.

One minor note - the Cubs didn't start playing in Wrigley until 1916.

That and you forgot the Penguin and the Sarge.  How do you forget a guy who never made a catch without diving.

Still though, I'm right there with you.  84 was my favorite.  Every player on that team was likeable.  Combine that with the fact that games didn't sell out unless they were good (or the Cards were in town) and you've got a very nice baseball situation.

Mike D.  lasted 16 monhs.
Huey lasted 12 months.
DIF has lasted 7 months.

Christ, it looks like I've been wasting MORE time at this place, not less.

It's all good.  This is definitely the finest collection of douchebags that I have had the pleasure of wasting time with.  Thanks to this weird social network that Andy Dolan has inadvertently created, I have had the chance to meet quite a few of you to drink beer, eat Chunky Bars, play softball, and go to Cubs games--in fact, I am 4-0 at Wrigley when with a Desipio crowd, so we must be doing something right.  I'd say that what we have in common is that we're Cub fans but it's obviously more than that, as I'd rather pull my scrotum over my head than hang out with some of the creepy bastards at, say, BCB or NSBB.   It's the jaded sensibility, I think.  That, and the fact that we're not a bunch of insecure closet cases who live below sea level.

While the self-congratulatory nature of this post is positively Deadspinesque, it's my last one so I am indulging myself.

Fucken deadbeat Cubs. Unbelievable. I had hoped to make my 1908 offering a victory lap post three weeks from now. I had some witty BS to write up, but now I just don't have the energy. Meh.

Love the site, been around almost since the beginning. Hope I haven't pissed off people TOO often, and if so, sorry about that. Maybe I got some laughs going a few times, too. Say what you will about my online persona, but I'm actually a pretty fun guy once you get a few beers in me. And I do love this goddamn team, so we've all got that in common at least.

Someone asked about my username awhile ago. My first Cubs game my grandfather took me on the train from Galesburg, we got in the park as soon as it opened to see batting practice, hound the players, etc... I got two autographs that day, one from Ernie and one from...Paul Popovich. So there you go.

Out.

I don't know what is more embarrassing,  the fact that I have had the chutzpah to post 1908 times or the message in the box next to my avatar telling me how many days I have spent logged into Desipio.  I would like to think that it was all time well spent.  But who am I kidding?  If there is anything that I would change about Desipio it is that reminder that instead of lurking around here I could have been trying to make the world a better place.  Because I believe that God has put us here to love one another and to strive for world peace.  And if you select me as Mr. Desipio I will use my office as an ambassador of good will to places such as South Carolina and you know, Iran, and such like...

Oh, hey.  Did I get to 1910 already?  Well, that's the year the Cubs made it to the World Series and almost got swept out in glorious fashion by the Philadelphia A's before eking out a 10-inning 4-3 win in Game 4.  They were outscored 35-15 in the five-game series after going 104-50 during the regular season.  I suspect their flop will be repeated when they finally make the Series again in 2010 and lose in five games to the Oakland A's.

Mine.

Aw, I was so cute back then.  Anyway, almost a year later, and here I am at post 2020.  There's no meaning in the number, I just had avtars shutoff and blew past 1908 without knowing.  Shit happens.  Since I fired up this ID, I've met quite a few of you in person, and to a man (and the occaissional woman) you're all good shits.  A little descript for my tastes, but to each his own.

And with that, CT II is done.  SUPYAD on the other side, man.

I think that is very peculiar.  It is obviously Abraham about to sacrifice Isaac.  However, they are being observed by Rachel Ray, who is wearing Tampa Bay Ray jersey.

It looks like I've managed to slow down my Desipio consumption. (http://www.desipio.com/messageboard/index.php?topic=1945.msg111984#msg111984)

16 months and some change?  Have I actually gotten a life?  Oh of course not. I would have come up on this post months ago had the voracious mandible of Ray Ratto not cleared everything out of its way in late 2007.

Since my "last" 1908th post, I have added to the list of idiots that I have met.  I have drank more beer with them, had more laughs.  I've run my record to to 6-0 at Cub games in which I've attended with at least one other Desipiot (excluding Oleg of course).  I'm including the rooftop game from August which was every bit the experience I would have optimistically expected (Oddly, though, I have yet to see the Blackhawks win at the UC when I've been with you jerks (0-1-2).  Thanks a lot, Fork.  Asshole).

However, as I have enjoyed getting to meet and know a bunch of you pricks over the last 4+ years, I'd like to take a minute to salute the "lesser-known" morans who, though they do not obsessively steal all of the space here like some of us post hogs do, are appreciated for their insight, discourse, humor and anecdotes which make this place what it is--the most non-retarded Cubs gathering spot on the interwebs.  At the risk of excluding some of you unsung Desipiots, I'd like to give a shout-out to Wheezer, Taylor, HelloWorld, Indolent Reader, DPappy, Big Drinky, Waco Kid (nee JS), Dave B., Al Czervik, Shooter, Stroke Bwhateverthefuck, Rooster, and yes even Mike C., with whom I may not agree politically but, as he's not afraid to express his views here, validates the shit of this place.  Let freedom reign, motherfuckers.

1994 was the year my folks moved to Chicago and I decided to live the rest of my years in misery as a Cubs fan.

Thanks to all you morans for helping me pass the time these last 3 and a half years.

That said, I'm staying, and Chipper's staying with me.
We just wanted to stop by and pay our respects to a time-honored tradition.

I'm still jealous that you graduated early from high school and got to just hang by yourself all summer at Cubs game as a 17 year old.

The revenge is that the Cubs sucked ass in '94.  What were thinking hitching your star to this wagon?

Well it took awhile, but I finally was a Moran enough times to retire the name (but think I'm going to keep it).  Only took 57 days of being here.

A quick story about the nick.  As many of you know I grew up in South Florida in the '70s and '80, a time when the only pro team in the area was the Miami Dolphins, and pro baseball was played in February and March.  Well, the town was as provincial as you would think, and so the sports report on the 11:00 news always mentioned local boys who were making good elsewhere.  One of those people was Miamian Andre Dawson (I for a while actually thought his name was Miamian) who was then with the Expos.  I started following Dawson, which led me to following the Cubs.  That and a trip to the bleachers in September of 1986 when I started school here, and I was hooked, dammit.

Anyway, good to hang in purgatory with all you degenerates.

I'm told that it's out of fashion now to do a 1908 post, but I like to talk, so I intend to do so. I'm not retiring my name anyways, since this isn't a moniker so much as it is a god damn brand name.

I've said it before in other circles, but I first came to Ol' Desipio back in the days when doses were daily, RV still wore his "In Dusty We Trusty" t-shirt, and I found the site when, in frustration with another of his pathetic days at the plate, I angrily googled "Paul Bako" thinking somebody must have hated the guy as much I did. I found Andy's Bak-o-meter and I was hooked. A few years later my friend and I were discussing Robert Machado of all people and I found Kerm's b126 entry on FLP. Not long after that I started shoutboxing once I was a college freshman and blogging seemed a perfectly nerdy thing to do. The message board came last, in 2008. So for three years now I've been hanging out with you yokels and warming my way into your hearts. In that time we've all suffered the bitter disappointment of the 2008 Cubs, suffered through the disillusioning process that ended in all of us but Yeti realizing Milton Bradley was just a batshit crazy bag of douche, ardently defended Jay Cutler from jackasses like PenFoe, and tirelessly campaigned for the fire barning of Jeff Samardzija. Sure, some of you tried to help me kill myself through alcohol poisoning in January, but I survived even if Oleg's bathroom has seen better days. All in all, this place is undoubtedly the best way I've found to occupy my time until the working day is done. So for that, I thank you. In honor of all the time I've wasted here, I shall now repost my greatest work:

Funny story - I actually signed off my voicemail message with "In Dusty We Trusty" during the 2003 playoffs.

Back then I took the red line to and from work every day. I'd see the asshat that came up with that t-shirt's balcony as we passed by. The shirt and a website was displayed for all to see. I didn't hate it back then, either. So to counter this, I've decided to hate everything first until it proves me wrong. Turns out I'm not much fun anymore.

Oh, dear, I can't even find the pile of weathered Post-Its that I had for ideas, just a card that alludes with "I sure do thank you for the huckleberry pie."

I know we're not doing this anymore but it did take 11 years and at the most two or three worthwhile posts for flannj to get here.

So that being the case...
I check in here every day (actually multiple times a day) and look forward to seeing the blue buttons.
I know it's pathetic and my kids refer to this place as "Dad and his Desipio friends".

But we have a cool bond that I appreciate and yet I hate all of you.

2016 Cubs, fuck yeah.

I've already tried to explain the Shoutbox (z"l) to my therapist. It's only a matter of time.
