The good thing about AFN rebroadcasting the game more than 12 hours after its been played is that they cut out all the rain delays.

After returning from spring break family vacation (fuck you very much American Airlines) me and Mrs. flannj were in attendance yesterday.
I currently have no voice left, a pretty fair hangover, some very drenched clothes, and a big positive for the rest of this season.
Some observations.
The new field;
The grass is really short and very brown, it obviously has some greening up and thickening to do.
Kind of a bummer because seeing and smelling fresh cut green grass at this time of year in Chicago is always one of the more romantic parts of opening day.
The larger warning track is very obvious, and the mound seems to have a more gradual and longer slope towards homeplate.
I couldn't perceive the field being any lower from the view in my seats, but I'm blind as a bat.
The new CBOE seats on the 3rd. base line seem to really crowd the Cubs bullpen.
The opening ceremonies;
The tribute to Ernie was cool and long overdue.
It was obvious that he had little voice left after all the interviews and speeches he made over the course of the morning.
I was really happy that it was Wayne Messmer singing instead of someone with no connection to the team.
And yes I belted out a Braaaaaave as loud as I could.
FUKUDOME!!!
When he came out on the field at the start of the game and after his first hit the right field bleachers went nuts.
Both times he removed his hat and gave a polite little bow. Very cool.
The baserunning mistake, you guys watching it on TV could probably tell more than I could. Missed sign? Not aware that Kendall has a rag arm? I'm sure that will get corrected but it sure brought back some memories of some other great Cub baserunners.
The homerun, what the fuck am I going to say about that? It's the reason I have no voice today.
The pitching;
Carlos = balls. The place went crazy with the first at bat / 3 pitch strikeout.
Marmol = balls. The place went crazy after his first out. This is going to be fun.
Wood / Howry. It's opening day, get off the ledge clowns.
The crowd;
I've been to enough opening days to realize that this is not the typical everyday crowd and the rain delay makes it worse. But the drunk asshole quotient was WAY up this year. Beside that aspect there does seem to be a much more positive outlook for this year, at least by the more knowledgeable regulars who sit near me.
The weather;
Did you know Wrigley makes it's own gravy when it rains?
A pit doesn't begin to describe the conditions after a couple of hours, but its always been like that.
The neighborhood;
What kind of asshole goes to the Cubby Bear? Or Sports Corner? Or Murphys?
Christ, just walk a couple of blocks.
Without sounding too Yellonesque, it was a good day despite the loss, can't wait until this weekend.
And me and Mrs. flannj only ran into Ronnie Woo once during the day.

I was worried that he could never live up to the hype. But after the opening day he had, he's going to be a folk hero aound the Confines now - even if he bats .230 for the rest of the year.

The ball skipped in the dirt away from Kendall, but unfortunately it hit Soto and bounced right back to Kendall. Fukkake actually got a good read on it, but it was bad luck. I liked the way he tried to bait Kendall.

This is what you guys were alluding to, but UM drew 3-0 on the first two ABs he had. Then to 3-2. I remember at least one foul on those two, so he was able to force Pwnswalt to throw 10+ pitches to him in just 2 appearances. Just think of the intangible value this guy possesses.

Mike Scott only had about 5 good years as an Astro, including his sick '86. Nolan Ryan also only had about 5 good years as an Astro, including 1981 with an ERA+ of 192!
The little shitbag, on the other hand, has had 8 very good seasons, never posting an ERA+ below 120.
I suppose one could make an argument for JR Richard, but he only had 5 good seasons as a Stro, as well, before his arm fell off.
I'd say it's Oswalt.
Nolan Ryan really only had two great seasons with the Astros. He's a Hall of Famer because he was an effective pitcher for almost 30 years, which is amazing. But I think he winds up overrated because of the sheer numbers he compiled.
And I think you're really underestimating Oswalt. Just for comparison, he's pitched 8 seasons with the Astros and has a 139 ERA+. Ryan had a 110 ERA+ in his eight seasons with the team.

332 IP (holy shit), 202 walks, 367 Ks, 2.89 ERA and 1.27 WHIP. To walk 5.5 guys per nine innings and have a WHIP under 1.30 is just weird, even with his K rate.

That Denkinger call was the greatest umpiring of all time; and I won't hear arguments to the contrary.

I posted this before I saw any video of the McClouth play. My post was basically that it didn't really matter if he made the catch or not, the Cubs were getting butt fucked in the face. But, I do agree now that I've seen it. That was a terrible call. Maybe the umpires weren't in position to see the ball come out...after all, it did roll out behind McClouth and probably shielded from the umps' views.

Huey posted a baseball related song and apparently he has a dickload friend named Craig (not the Sox Craig from softball who is a nice guy) who decided to use Huard's PANKCITEMENT for Opening Day to remind him that the Cubs are shitty and will always be shitty. Also, good patience shown by the Cubs, by and large - yeah, there was only actually one walk but Burnett threw 98 pitches in less than six innings. I'm certainly not getting excited about this season, but I was nonetheless encouraged.

THISTHISTHISTHISTHIS - Epstein preaches controlling the strike zone, which is done either from the mound or from the plate. Hitters need to be disciplined, and pitchers need to stay in/around the strike zone.
This sounds like the baseball version of extablishing the run to set up play action, but to say this concept has been missing from the Cubs' organizational philosophy would be implying there was any sort of organizational philosphy in place.
What's going to be really fun around here will be when guys come up from the minors over the next few years already knowing how to do this, rather than trying to teach it at the major league level.

Opening Day is all about optimism, and what is there to be pessimistic about? Even if the Cubs struggle to get 70 wins this year, the farm system is fat with prospects. Baez will show up this summer, and even if he's not the second coming of Christ, it doesn't matter nearly as much as prospects have mattered in the past, because there is a line of guys behind him.
Worst case, enjoy the BBQ pork chop sandwich in Kane County.
