Title: Breaking Bad
Post by: Internet Apex on January 28, 2008, 10:46:05 PM
This is a cool new show on AMC, Sundays. Bryan Cranston (The dad on Malcolm in the Middle) plays a high school chemistry teacher who learns he has inoperable lung cancer. He's got a handicapped son and a pregnant wife. So he decides to start cooking up meth with a local dipshit drug dealer in an attempt to make some money for his family before he dies.

Insanity ensues.

The show has excellent dialogue, decent acting and tremendous cinematography. It's just weird enough to remind one of a Coen Bros. picture. It's more disturbing than depressing. More surreal than anything.

I give the first episode a 3/4. If you have Comcast you can get the first two episodes OnDemand. I'm about to watch the second episode right now.

Give this a look.

Just watched Episode 1.

Good stuff.

Whatley's great, as is Aaron Paul as his sidekick.

The whole emasculated middle-aged man is hardly new territory (frankly, there's a bit of Malcolm's dad in here), so we'll have to wait and see if they manage to make it fresh. But casting Cranston and Paul alone seems like a pretty good start.

And, really, there's no denying the appeal of an eBay-inspired flaccid handjob. ("Happy Birthday!") And flipping the wife for some backdoor entry? That really symbolizes "breaking bad"... very symbolically.

Episode two gets more depraved. I can't wait to see how sick it gets in episode three. There's a speech that Mr. White gives in the first episode to his students, that sets up the theme of the show: "Chemistry is not the study of elements, but the study of change." Then he starts setting shit on fire and some of the geeks in the class are like, "Whoa!"

It's true, that this type of emasculated middle aged man is a common character in film but damn if it isn't a common character in real life middle America too. So, I'm cool with it.

(spoilerish)

When the episode started in flash-forward mode, I fully expected that to be a flash forward to the end of the season/series or something. I certainly didn't think we'd see him killing fools already.

At the very least, I know they won't be stringing us along.

It's an odd roller coaster of emotion that this story inspires in me. When I watch White commit some horrifying criminal acts, I get a rush of fear and anguish for the character because I can anticipate what the repercussions will mean for him. It's like watching The Shield when I think, for sure, that Vic has just gone too far this time and there's no going back and he's screwed through the floor now... But this character has terminal lung cancer. He doesn't have time for the repercussions to really set in. If he goes to jail he won't survive two years of his sentence and will do most of it hooked up to breathing tubes anyway. Prison really should be no deterrent to him at this point. He's gonna die a slow painful death regardless.

So I'm kind of free to just watch with impunity, believing that shit can't possibly get worse. That is where this show is totally brand new for me. Maybe there have been stories like this before but damned if I can remember one that was worth a shit.

How often does someone get misdiagnosed with inoperable lung cancer?

Not much to say, but that I anticipate this series getting pretty fucking dark.

Clearly it goes beyond repercussions.

I mean, yeah, he obviously has no moral qualms about cooking meth (yet).

But deliberately killing another human being is something neither of these guys wants to do, regardless of legal or social sanction.

The drama goes beyond the pressures of formal, external authority, which, as you point out, are mostly a non-factor for the terminal White.

I get the sense that (aside from the darkly comic practical fuck-ups that drive the plot) the show is going to be animated throughout by his much more personal struggles with himself.

I doubt if he tells her about the meth. This admission of the cancer and prognosis will probably be an attempt to explain his odd behavior. Maybe it will buy him some time out of the house. Skyler may finally see fit to "climb down out of (his) ass" and let him run around getting stoned for a while. If he admits he's cooking meth she'd probably tell her douchebag of a brother in law and that will be that.

We found out in this episode that Jesse was the DEA's snitch. Didn't we? Isn't that what they said? They tried to kill our snitch? They were talking about one of those three? The beguilingly Japanese looking dude, Krazy 8 or Jesse. But then that talk at the beginning about not knowing who Cap'n Cook was kinda throws that off. That's part of the story I'm not quite getting yet. If Jesse is a snitch, DEA Douche is going to track him down and beat some stuff out of him at some point. Probably in hopes of finding Krazy 8 and co. And that's gonna be the pinnacle of all this shit.

But I'm not sure who the snitch was. If it was Krazy 8, that's a whole other story. Because he won't be doing any more snitching.

I think the way Walt ended up dealing with the basement problem was kind of a cop out by the writers. Either he was going to have to live in fear for himself and his family, or be a cold-blooded pre-meditated killer. Walt didn't have the balls to do the deed on his own terms, which is what I wanted to see him do after all that build up. Instead he was able to react to Krazy 8 reaching for the broken plate piece. It made it too easy for him. I guess if he marched down there and whacked the guy like it was nothing we'd have to look at the character a whole new way.

It's probably hard to make a cold-blooded killer likable. Other than Tony Soprano.

I thought the snitch was Krazy 8 by the way.

I didn't mind the way that worked out. I thought it would play out a bit differently with Walt confronting and killing Domingo, only to find that the missing piece of plate had actually slid to a halt underneath a workbench/chair/table.

I haven't watched this show in order of episode, but it is really compelling.

In one of the scenes, the lead is drinking Scotch...  specifically, Dimple aka the Pinch.  Either excellent product placement, or someone on the show knows their whiskey.  An ex gf's dad used to give me the stuff to drink.  I liked him.  I like this show.

I have to admit to enjoying Malcom in the Middle too.  I think it's really well written, and the Dad played on that episode is a great character too.

I know nothing about this show, but while home from work laid up with a paralyzed neck yesterday, (Intrepid Reader: SBox - PEN IS SO OLD!) I saw about 1000 commercials for it on AMC, the only channel that has anything worthwhile to watch on daytime TV (Big, Rudy, Hook all in one day!)

Before my Alzheimers-esque ramble goes on any longer, I wanted to point out that there is a Season 1 Marathon of this meth-show on Friday night.
All the episodes.

That is all.

BUMP

The first two episodes of S3 were fucking amazing. Jesse completely fucking over his parents was incredibly funny. There seems to be quite a bit more humor strewn about. I think it's as if the writers are trying to get across that they're not in any way saying that all of this shit could actually happen; it's a morality play - completely absurd - just sit back and enjoy it. It's the antithesis of "24" in my opinion, in that it makes fun of itself and makes the ridiculous plot line much more palatable. 24 asked you to step into a fake world and go for a whirl of danger and suspense. But it was so outlandishly implausible that thrills and chills became impossible. That and it was poorly written and directed, which this is not. That's the real reason why they're opposites. And what I said before.

The entire last season sat in my DVR for months until I had time to watch it, knowing that once I started I wouldn't be able to stop at just one episode. We blasted through the entire season in a few days.

The cousins are cool. Hank is a bad ass. Mike is a bad ass. Heisneberg is a bad ass. Saul is hilarous. Paul and Cranston act the shit out of Jesse and Walt. The bottle episode (term I learned from Community) was great.

I like this show.

He has. But I think there used to be some conflict. Even last season we saw compassion for Jesse and some desire to keep his family intact. In the beginning, the whole motivation was to set his family up. Now he's just pure poison.

The Jane thing is what did it for me, but I see what you mean. Although I was a little confused about his motivation when he was talking to Jesse about his girlfriend and the kid. I couldn't tell if he was concerned about her and happy for Jesse, or threatening them. Or both.

He was manipulating Jesse into getting her out of the picture. Plan A.

That's what I thought but he was pretty convincing. Walt is almost as good of an actor as Bryan Cranston.

It works for me. Barely lower than what I experience picture-wise with Netflix. But it's full of pop ups and crap to fight off. Not legal.

I should ask: How do you watch Netflix?  I use my AppleTV, so differences in quality that are hard for me to notice on a MacBook Air are a lot more annoying on a bigger screen.

WTF, Washington? (http://www.ktvb.com/news/regional/WA-murder-details-align-with-Breaking-Bad-acid-tub-episode--210579651.html)

QuoteNINE MILE FALLS, Wash. -- Newly filed court documents reveal additional information on Thursday about a Nine Mile Falls murder.

QuoteDetectives found Regan Jolley's body soaking in a plastic tub full of acid in a garage along 14800 block of West Autumn Lane on Tuesday. Detectives believe she was killed Monday.

Authorities seized DVD discs [sic] of Breaking Bad at Jason Hart's home. The discs included Breaking Bad's season one, episode two. The episode involves a character dissolving somebody's body in tub full of acid.

QuoteIn the Breaking Bad episode the main character explains how to dissolve a body. The character said: "You see, hydrofluoric acid won't eat through plastic, it will however dissolve metal, rock, glass, ceramic."

QuoteAuthorities said Hart brought the DVDs prior to allegedly killing his girlfriend. Court documents also stated that Hart bought a chemistry book and drain cleaner.

Witnesses told authorities that Hart and Jolley were fighting. A witness found the body in the garage according to court documents. Hart allegedly told the witness not to go in the garage because he "wouldn't like what he'd find."

QuoteHart's family told KREM 2 News that he was addicted to methamphetamine.

QuoteDobson said the two had been dating for about six weeks.

QuoteDean Settle was staying at the home of Jason Hart, 27, at the time Hart allegedly murdered Regan Jolley, 33.  Police arrested Hart June 4th after Settle discovered Jolley's nude body in a tub of acid in a nearby garage.

Police accused Hart of strangling Jolley and trying to dispose of her body in acid.  Investigators later found an episode of the television show "Breaking Bad" in Hart's DVD player.  The episode features an eerily similar murder plot.

"The only thing I know or feel about it -- that was his favorite series," said Settle. "That's what he told me.  I think he used it as instructions to go do what he was doing to dispose the body."

QuoteHart pleaded not guilty to second degree murder.  His trial date was set for mid August.

Words fail me.

Great, great season. Heisenberg as kingpin should be interesting.

Not sure it's going to go that way. He has no distribution network.  Something makes me think he's running the car wash and it doesn't make much money.  He heads back to meth when there's nothing left for the family.

Really looking forward to next summer.

I'm avoiding the last three pages of this thread as, like with Sterling Archer, I'm watching this on the tape-dealyed world of Netflix.  I wanted to catch up on any thoughts associated with this season, hence my presence.

Just wanted to say--as I'm 6 episodes into the previous season--No, Chuck.

First of all and it pains me to say it, that's pretty funny Fork.

Second, I neglected to mention the whole Todd/Lydia thing is creepy as fuck.

Classic Todd.

"Just so you know, this isn't personal."

That rivaled the Drew Sharp thing as the worst moment in the show. Fucking Todd.

I need to watch it again, but I think I loved it. Damn you, Stevia! I was happy watching the Nazis get blowed up and I pumped my fist like a common fool when Jesse strangled Meth Damon. Jesse's freedom was the best part of the episode for me.

I got a little choked up when he watched Walt Jr. walk into the apartment. I do worry about what will happen to Jesse. I assume he'll hang himself in prison or get murdered by Nazis in there with nary a struggle.

The finale wasn't what I pictured, or wanted, but it was perfect. I assumed it was going to be really dark, and wanted it dark, but it was kind of a happy ending. Great show.

Marie and I are both amazed at how funny the show is. I'm waiting for it to get even darker and bleaker based on the comments I've read over the years as people live tweeted their reactions to the show.

I'm not upset I waited this long to watch though because I bet most people are like "damn I wish I could watch it again for the first time" well guess what fuckos you can't.

Worst part about having a friend go through it is that you really can't talk too in depth with them. I mean, you remember the big things, and you'll know when they pass it, but some of the smaller details get lost in time and you don't want to inadvertently give some spoilers

I don't remember!

I watched the first three seasons live and then binge-watched the last few seasons. There were times I had to stop watching for awhile because it was too intense. I'd think about going back in and watching several episodes but I'd hold off and watch a bunch of basketball or something just to keep from dealing with it.

Better call Saul has so much more levity to it. I keep rewinding it and laughing my ass off. Don't think I ever did that with Breaking Bad. Not even the bathtub part.

Yes. There is a "bleeped and bra" version as well that runs about 6 minutes shorter. I believe that version also edits out the "Ebay scene."

After the pilot, the fucks were limited to two or three per season and were all bleeped.

I was about to say IFT was unbleeped, but a google search for Sepinwall's recap says no. I guess that's the benefit of watching via Netflix

That's where I am. She's doing what she has to. She's really uptight which I can see as annoying but Walt compounded lie upon lie upon lie. How should she react? I don't hate her and I really don't get why people did - unless she gives a reason to coming up. I can't believe she didn't fuck Beneke yet.

People hated her for the same reason they hated Carmela Soprano and Betty Draper. Because they're living vicariously through an awful character and the ball and chain keeps slowing the man down. Now, I know there are plenty of other reasons to hate Carm and Betty and yes, Skyler is ... SPOILER....

I didn't hate Skyler but there were moments when she made things excruciatingly difficult for Walt and you had to sit through him feeding her bullshit. I don't know. It's part of the show. Just thought I'd post is all.

I hate Betty Draper for reasons entirely independent of Don: she's a spiteful, shallow woman who is crushing her daughter out of a weird sense of jealousy. But any shit Don got from her is well and truly deserved.

I never hated Skyler. Her actions made sense if you accept the premise that Walt treats her like shit.

Yeah I have definitely accepted that. Of course last night we plowed through three eps as Beneke plowed through Mrs. White.

How anyone could actively dislike Skyler after her delivery of "I fucked Ted" is confusing to me.

So season 2 just ended and wow. The Jane thing was not something I saw coming because of Chuck's "Jane rules" comment but there was no way she could live and not have Walt thinking about ways to kill her.

Jesse really started pissing me off. I hope he gets better. Drugs are fuckin gross.

I'm not going to tell you how to feel or how you will feel about any of these characters. Everybody processes this shit differently. But at the point in the story you're talking about I hated Walt and Jesse so much I was unsure if I could keep watching. How are you on Skyler? A lot of people really couldn't stand her.

I never understood the Skyler hate. Walt was a dick. Skyler had every right to be a bitch.

I'm on season 2, episode 5. I see both sides. We know what Walt is up to, we know he's lying to her, she knows he's lying to her. I understand her being upset. On the other hand, given she has no reason to suspect him of doing something totally evil, the fact that she gave him, like, a week to deal with terminal cancer before mistrusting his every word and acting like he's an asshole for just wanting to be alone sometimes (even though we know that's not what he's doing) is kinda bitchy. Like is it that unthinkable your husband who is probably dying is really just going through some shit and needs to be alone doing it? Really?

We just watched that episode last night. Brutal stuff. We were going to watch a couple episodes but the wife was so upset about that kid she had to be done just after that episode.

Also I had no doubt from the moment that moron got under that ATM that he was going to die like that and it was still painful waiting for it.

Still very slowly working through this, got one episode left in season 2, but just watched where Walt let Jane die and Jesus Christ, Walter.

I think I've reached the point where I just hate him.

We recently finished watching this show about a month ago.
We're not big TV people, so I don't have a big basis for comparison, but it's the best show I've ever seen.

We started watching The Wire last night and, while I assume it will be great, I spent most of the first episode waiting for Walter to come out.

Yep. The worst episode was the finale, and the finale was still great. (Still annoyed that Walter essentially got away with it)

The Wire is more up and down than Breaking Bad (relatively speaking). And season 5 is a clunker.  But Seasons 1 and 4 are brilliant.
