Mrs.Drinky gifted me a year's subscription to the Bacon of the Month club a couple of years ago.  Pretty pricey for what you get (which is why I didn't renew it), but still nice to get a pound or so of sweet bacon in the mail once a month.

Bacon of the month?  How many different kinds of bacon are there that there needs to be a club?

You would receive a package from a different smokehouse once a month.  Each smokehouse has their own take/specialty.  Sometimes it would be an applewood smoked bacon, some were more peppery, etc.  It was like the microbrew beer of the month, only with delicious pork.

Because delicious bacon delivered to your door sounds like it could be worth at least a decent premium.

$150 plus S&H for a year.  Considering you only get a pound at best each month, it just seemed a little steep.  But, the bacon was almost always awesome.

Sounds like it's Desipio picnic time.

Slaky can make the bacon, Kermit and TDubbs can brew the beer, and... Bacon and beer? I think that's pretty much all we'd need.

This is what Paula thinks of as "lite fare".  When her show comes on the Food Network either I or Mrs. Hawk invariably say "I wonder how she is going to try to kill us tonight".  Another example, bacon wrapped deep fried mac and cheese squares (with the mac and cheese made with sour cream, natch).

Astonishingly, the "Freeze-Em Pickle" brand name is still in production.

Sadly, printing "H" of the second edition of Secrets of Meat Curing and Sausage Making (B. Heller & Co.), which is available from archive.org, appears to omit the charming WSJ-style Trichina drawing that graces my copy of printing "D".  (Not to mention the tapeworm, which is granted eyes and a sort of Charlie Brown sweater moustache.)

The moustache takes a while to discern, but otherwise it's like a Rorschach test--if you stare too long, it starts to look like the view down a stone well rather than a proper tapeworm.

Fascinating.  I'm surprised at the lack of tiered efforts, though, or indeed attempts to extend the notion all the way into the dessert realm.  One could imagine some sort of variation upon baked alaska involving a small core of perhaps pistachio ice cream, domed with a deep-fried bird's nest of lamb or bacon, and then covered with a lightly sweetened potato "halva" that gets flambeed.  I suspect an aromatic component such as rose or screw-pine essence might work in this outer layer if paired properly with the meat (and not burned off).

No, but I at least used to be a competent cook, at both home and catering scales.

That was before the combined effects of Free-Running Disorder, a charismatic Catholic group with a taste for real estate, and an elderly blind cat who wants to live on top of the stove reduced me to surviving on deli salads and fistfuls of Certifed Humane ham (a low standard, but better than nothing, IMO).

I've been pondering whether a layer of candied egg yolks might work as a transitional element in this fever-dream of a dessert monstrosity, by the way.  Hmph... now that I think about it, one could turn the notion of a "Scotch egg" on its head, as well.

As the subsidiary project, I think I'm talking about coating ground, seasoned, cooked lamb in jalebi batter, with two layers inside.  The core of the "device" is presumptively candied egg yolk ("Yemas de Santa Teresa").  The substituent for the whites is unclear, but "seasoned marshmallow fluff" is probably a good placeholder.

After battering, it would have to be deep-fried, so there are technical issues.

Obviously.

The trick with the dessert version of the "Scotch egg" is that the batter and the layer of meat likely would not cook at the same rate.  I would hope that a tactic similar to that for pommes soufflées might apply, but it would probably have to be done with two deep fryers in short order, and getting the jalebi batter to adhere to the oily meat layer could also present a challenge.

There was another bar that did this, but I can't remember the name and I believe it has closed.  The MARKET at work.

Also, they had a "deep fry anything" night, where you could bring stuff in and they'd batter and deep fry it.

did they have a fryer big enough to fit Bob Howry in?

I wouldn't want to eat deep-fried Howry, just want to throw him into 600 degree oil.

taste like chicken?

Tastes like victory.

I was just at the local Whole Foods, picking up a couple things for dinner.

They had, for $7, a bacon chocolate bar.

$7.

Bacon chocolate.

I'll let you know how it tastes tomorrow morning.

Here (http://www.vosgeschocolate.com/product/bacon_exotic_candy_bar/exotic_candy_bars) is the candy bar in question.

Before reading this, I asked myself why I was waiting, and went and got the bar.

The chocolate itself is actually pretty good milk chocolate.

The bar overall is kind of like a Nestle's Crunch, only awesomer.

It's crunchy like a Crunch, but the bacon taste is nice and strong.

It's also pretty salty, which works with the chocolate in the same fashion as peanuts or pretzels do.

The streak continues. There is nothing bad that can happen when bacon is involved.

On the other hand, they would also go broke trying to cater Bar Mitzvahs

Perhaps.  If the bride was as big as I am imagining her to be (since they had a Hostess Twinkie-n-Cupcakes Wedding Cake), I imagine finding her big ol' cooter amongst the flaps of her FUP might be difficult.  I'm sure he married her because his green card was expired.

I love bacon. In fact, I'm eating bacon right now.

But this thread is beginning to turn me off bacon.

I'd considered fixing this un-hotlinkable image link for you.

But, seeing as it's nothing more than a vicious slander against the good name of bacon, I'm going to have to conscientiously object.

And something special for the Thanksgiving holiday just around the corner.

Bacon wrapped Turducken, and these guys didn't skimp. They wrapped the chicken and duck in bacon before stuffing the bacon wrapped trukey.

I've got to tell you that as much as I love bacon, that looks disgusting. I thought I was in on this bacon trend before it was a trend, but it's become ridiculous. Although, if anybody ever gets a chance to eat at Michael Symon's Lola in Cleveland, you have to have his Berkshire Bacon appetizer and the 6am Special for desert, which has bacon ice cream. Fucking amazing.

As I noted in the SBox, they now serve country fried bacon (with dipping sauces) at Weiner and Still Champion in Evanston.

This is barely a stone's throw from Fork's abode, so I think we ought to commission an expedition some day soon.

As I also noted in the SBox, Weiner and Still Champion has apparently been visited by the film crew from Food Network's "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives", with the episode set to air early in the new year. It doesn't seem like a terribly remarkable place all told, but it is a darling of the foodies at LTH Forum (http://lthforum.com/bb/viewtopic.php?p=147166) (the owner is a member). And their fries are simply tremendous.

But anyways, considering the potential for a post-Food Network food porn rush, perhaps a bacon tasting is in order sooner rather than later...

Taking nothing away from the utter brilliance of the Bacon Explosion...

I meant, which one is Mike Nelson in the picture.  You see, it was one of those joke things (not a good one, but still...).  Also, anyone with that shit-eating grin should be called Mikey.

All that pot and you aren't familiar with MST3K?

Yeah...I know of the show.  I understand it exists and people find it funny.  I am not one of those people.

RV needs to get this revolutionary food item out of the test kitchen and into our stomachs, if only so that the people understand it.

It's pretty simple. You start out with a regular old pizza. Except it ain't no regular pizza, because it has a kangaroo-style pouch in it. Inside that pouch is another, smaller pizza. Now here's where it gets interesting. The second, smaller pizza has it's OWN pouch. And inside *that* pouch....a third pizza. I think you guys are getting the idea.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you...Daryle Ward Pizza! And the Shoutbox churns out revolutionary inventions like this every damn day.

Good news for all of you reprobates.  Bacon cures hangovers!

QuoteMs Roberts told The Mirror: "Bingeing on alcohol depletes neurotransmitters too, but bacon contains a high level of aminos which tops these up, giving you a clearer head."

Researchers also found a complex chemical interaction in the cooking of bacon produces the winning combination of taste and smell which is almost irresistible.

The reaction between amino acids in the bacon and reducing sugars in the fat is what provides the sandwich with its appeal.

Ms Roberts said: "The smell of sizzling bacon in a pan is enough to tempt even the staunchest of vegetarians. There's something deeper going on inside. It's not just the idea of a tasty snack. There is some complex chemistry going on.

"Meat is made of mostly protein and water. Inside the protein, it's made up of building blocks we call amino acids. But also, you need some fat. Anyone who's been on a diet knows if you take all the fat from the meat, it just doesn't taste the same. We need some of the fat to give it the flavour."

She explained that the reaction released hundreds of smells and flavours but it is the smell which reels in the eater. "Smell and taste are really closely linked," she said. "If we couldn't smell then taste wouldn't be the same."

Sounds like the study was an excuse to spend the research funding on booze and bacon.  Nice gig if you can get it.

QuoteWe're no Einstein, but one thing that we know is that anything + bacon= awesome. That's why we knew that if we took our seeds and flavored them with delicious zero fat, no calorie Bacon Salt, that it'd be an automatic home run. So don't be shy, reach for a bag of BIGS, and go ahead and get your bacon on! BIGS™ Seeds: Always bigger. Always better.

The basic formula they claim is...

x + bacon = awesome

We assume it's true. But let's try some substitution...

x = The Holocaust

And we assume the following is true as well.

The Holocaust = Super Not Awesome

The Holocaust + Bacon = awesome

Assuming this is true, we substitute...

Super Not Awesome + Bacon = Awesome

Solve for Bacon...

Bacon = Awesome - Super Not Awesome = Super Super Awesome

So, if Bacon = Super Super Awesome, and the original formula holds true ...

Marisa Miller + Bacon = Awesome

Again, we substitute ...

Marisa Miller + Super Super Awesome = Awesome

Solve for Marisa Miller ...

Marisa Miller = Awesome - Super Super Awesome = Not Awesome

... and fuck those guys and all they stand for.

I was just at the local Whole Foods, picking up a couple things for dinner.

They had, for $7, a bacon chocolate bar.

$7.

Bacon chocolate.

I'll let you know how it tastes tomorrow morning.

Tomorrow morning? Bullshit. If you really had a bacon chocolate bar, you'd eat it right now.

Now available in dark chocolate as well.

On a complete sidenote, you haven't seen the Simpsons until you watched it in German.  Amazing.  Simply amazing.  Gratefully, SBZ (or whatever German station this is) is showing some classics that I already know the lines to, helping my nascent German language skills accommodate.

Don't the Germans dub everything? Tell me they left the Simpsons alone. I've been watching it with Norwegian subtitles for the last 3 weeks and I'm so glad to be home you have no idea. Honestly, at this point, I'd say that German is a better sounding language than Norwegian.

After hearing repeatedly about this wonderful new ice cream shop in Scottsdale that uses local, farm-fresh ingredients, I finally found out what the hype was all about.

I'm not sure how they incorporate this into their ice cream (I assume it's a specialty flavor that wasn't available when I was there), but holy shit is this a wonderful culinary advancement.

You need to read the article:

Sadly for pork lovers, the shake is only bacon-flavored which to swine haters means the shake is vegetarian! Jack in the Box flavors the bacon shake with Torani bacon-flavored syrup so you might be even able to pass this off as a healthy meal (no you can't). How many times do I have to point this out?  You can't mix pork and dairy.  They must be eaten separately.

What leverage does a religion that doesn't believe in Hell have?

Who needs Hell when you are a Cub fan?

40 years in the desert was a breeze by comparison.

Somebody dropped a quarter.

I've traveled with enough Jews to say it probably only seemed like 40 years.

How many times do I have to point this out?  You can't mix pork and dairy.  They must be eaten separately.

I'm a little sad that they didn't mix up real bacon in the shake but hey, I'm sure it tastes amazing.

so go to Portillo's*, order a milkshake and a side of bacon. Insert bacon into milkshake.

PROFIT!

*Unless Steak N Shake is closer

Screw Steak N Shake.  They don't even offer bacon on their burgers. (http://deadspin.com/5873657/if-you-dont-like-bacon-on-your-hamburger-then-screw-you?tag=foodspin)

Caleb Hanie. (http://www.denverpost.com/sports/ci_20249251/broncos-sign-caleb-hanie-be-mannings-backup)

QuoteThe Broncos believe Hanie, a good athlete who moves well, was put in a difficult situation last season because in his final three games he didn't have star running back Matt Forte, who had suffered a season-ending knee injury, and had to play behind an offensive line that surrendered an NFL-most 105 sacks the previous two seasons.

With the Broncos, Hanie will get a new lesson in work ethic. In his four seasons with the Bears, Hanie first played behind Kyle Orton and then Cutler. Neither Orton nor Cutler are known for putting in extra time on the practice field or weight room, at least not while they played in Denver.

Manning is known as one of the most prepared quarterbacks — both mentally and physically — in the league.

So you see, Caleb's sucking is all Cutler's fault.

Yeah, it's not like Cutler was known as a workout wonder (http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/draft/2006-04-18-cutler-cover_x.htm) when he came into the NFL or anything:

QuoteVanderbilt strength coach John Sisk says Cutler steeled himself for SEC beatings by spending as much time in the weight room as any of the linemen.

Cutler can bench press 405 pounds, and at the NFL Scouting Combine he put together a string of 23 bench repetitions of 225 pounds. In his four seasons, Vanderbilt coaches say, he missed only one practice, and he has bulked up by about 40 pounds since his freshman season.

I had hoped, now that they've all fallen in and out of love with Tebow and picked up Manning, that Denver fans would get over their asshurt toward all things Cutler. They haven't. Mike Klis was saying the same thing the other day on twitter, I think the quote was "If Caleb Hanie signs with Denver, he should be prepared for a whole new level of work. Jay Cutler didn't prepare him for Peyton Manning." A couple things I love about this:

1) I don't follow Mike Klis, I found out because, as usual, our beloved Biggsy retweeted the cheap shot at Cutler.

2) Yeah, because Peyton Manning is known as an outstanding teacher and that's why he has a long string of backups currently starting throughout the league, like Jim Sorgi and Brock Huard. Curtis Painter certainly looked like he had benefitted from Manning's expert tutelage last year when he had to start and totally didn't suck horseballs.

3) Not to call Brett Favre a good teacher but more to show that there's no real correlation between a starting qb who is awesome and his backups becoming good players (it's got more to do with the team, you know, drafting good quarterbacks), look at Favre's backups who became starters: Mark Brunell, Aaron Brooks, Matt Hasselbeck, Aaron Rodgers, and look at Manning's backups: Fucking No One. Favre's reputation for shirking practice and relying solely on god-given talent IS ONE OF THE THINGS THE MEDIA LOVES ABOUT HIM. Gah.

Fuck that noise.
