Title: Chuck
Post by: Weebs on October 28, 2008, 08:00:47 AM
Anybody else watch this show?  I've been watching it since it started last year and it's actually pretty awesome.  Maybe cause I'm a nerd and can therefore relate more, but still, it's good stuff.  The first season starts out a little formulaic but then it picks up quite a bit.  Zachary Levi seems like he'll be a star sometime soon, it has Jayne from Firefly (Adam Baldwin) and most importantly, it has Yvonne Strahovski:

I think the other Chuck thread got swallowed by Ratto.

It's a good show.  Kinda fun, low involvement...  Hot chicks.  Not enough tits for Apex though.

I've been really enjoying this season. The guest stars and storylines this year are much better than last, they do a great job of coming up with entertaining ways for Chuck to use his geek skills. And the addition of Buster Bluth certainly can't hurt.

Really?  I'm surprised.

Also, they should have tried airbrushing this picture a little bit.

Chuck's an excellent show, I liked it last year and it's vastly improved this season.  Love Sarah, and Chuck's sister is OK, too.  My only problem with Sarah is that in last week's flashbacks to her in high school she had braces on, though her current teeth show no traces of ever having been actually straightened.  She's self-conscious about it, too.  One of my friends pointed out how awkwardly this otherwise smoking hot chick smiles.  Again, it's not like she's got Jewel's grill or anything.  Her in the female Nerd Herd outfit this week was tremendous.

I'm not sure if it's because I'm a huge nerd, but I've almost never laughed as hard at a show as I did at this part from yesterday's episode (I'm sure the video will be taken down within an hour):

Yes, but there was a scene at the end of Meet the Veals when Buster got a hold of Franklin and said this to Lucille:

That was a great line.  They never had Buster just explode and say something outrageous enough.  It happened in like the second episode of the series when half his monologue is bleeped out, and then the Franklin line, but that was about it.

Who knows what will happen with the buttchuggers running NBC, but I hope this guy (http://www.hitfix.com/blogs/2008-12-6-the-fien-print/posts/2009-4-6-tonight-s-a-good-night-to-watch-chuck?comment_id=1709&page=1) is right:

QuoteWant to know my opinion on the chances that "Chuck" will be back next season?

Yes, NBC's Jay Leno Masterplan is a mistake and yes, it's a slap in the face of the industry's creative community. But try this as a positive after-effect: If NBC's programming window for weekdays has been reduced by a third, that perhaps that makes NBC place greater value on putting original episodes in those remain slots? I mean, if you only have two hours of new shows per night, you can't use that time for repeats, right? I think that will lead to NBC picking up a number of shows for limited, cable-style seasons of 10 or 13 episodes, so that the network is able to constantly keep the hours between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. fresh before turning things over to Jay.

My guess, without any sort of insider knowledge or evidence to back this up, is that "Chuck" should be well-positioned for, at the very least, some sort of 13-episode midseason slot. Josh Schwartz and Chris Fedak have introduced more serialized elements into the storytelling this season and folks say that Fedak is particularly involved in fleshing out the show's greater mythology. Bringing "Chuck" back for a carefully arced 13 episodes would probably be positive for the show and it would also be a boon for NBC, which is bound to need some good faith from the critical community next year once audiences make it clear that Leno is better as an 11:30 soporific, rather than as a legitimate lead-in to local news.

The only reason Chuck is still on is that it's on NBC, and it tied its series-low demo numbers last night.  Given that it is NBC, it probably has a decent shot at renewal.

I wouldn't give up on Reaper just yet, though--producers are replaceable.  If the CW "wants" it (that is, its ratings are good enough to push them), ABC Studios could keep it going.

Well Reaper is outdrawing 90210, but I see that everything on the CW is. Seems to me the CW has become the network where my favorite shows go to die.

90210 is a show that they must be high on for whatever reason. Teen trash sells and they want to have another Gossip Girl - though I have no idea if that show even gets good ratings.

The only problem I have w/ Chuck is that the episodes are mostly the same.  Chuck goes on a mission, flashes, gets caught up in spy games he shouldn't be in, saves the day humorously, insert wacky Buy More employees 3 times, 2 scenes w/ Ellie and Awesome...   That's 80% of the episodes.

It's still fun to watch, but I can see whay people are turning it off.  It's the same reason I gave up on My Name is Earl.

It's still fun to watch, but I can see whay people are turning it off.  It's the same reason I gave up on My Name is Earl.

It's starting to stray a tad from that formula but it works for me. My Name Is Earl got awful when he went to jail. It was tolerable until then. I'd argue if they would have stayed with the formula, I might have kept watching.

Earl and Randy crossing things off the list was a good show. Not even a bouncing Catalina makes it worth watching when they don't stick to the formula.

It's certainly a lot better than it was for the first 6 or 7 episodes of the series, when they didn't really have a season-long arc to follow, or at least one that went through a few episodes.  The problem is until they introduce new characters who know Chuck's secret (like his dad), the spy plots can really only include him, Sarah (needs more Yvonne), Casey, and whatever guests they have that week.  I think Morgan or Awesome or somebody else needs to know what's going on and get involved in the spy plots.  Also, they save the last 5 minutes of every episode to show Chuck once again confessing or renouncing his love for Sarah.  It all is a little formulaic, but most of the cast is entertaining to watch, so I don't really have a problem with it.

Extremely entertaining episode last night. I like how the meathead was the one to stumble onto Chuck's secret identity, and Jeff and Lester showing him Casey's perv stash was hilarious. Yvonne in her skivvies = boi oi oing.

So how are they going to get Chuck back in the spy game? Will he choose to have the intersect re-installed or something?

Probably by canceling the show.  They seem to be setting it up to end next week.

It's a really good series, and the last two episodes have been particularly strong.  It needs to be picked up for a third season because it's one of the few NBC shows worth a shit.  Even if they are giving five hours of primetime away to that ludicrous Jay Leno Show.

Agreed.  They're making the progression towards super spy take a long time, so Chuck can just be a big nerd, although the show definitely feels a bit darker this season.  It was weird to have an entire episode without anyone from Buy More.  But getting Devon more involved in the spy game is...awesome.

Also, I was surprised at how they got rid of Baby Buster.

I think Chuck has done something like this before.  They ended the episode making you think someone was dead, or something like that, just to show the exact opposite in the clip that airs 5 seconds after the episode.

I think Chuck has done something like this before.  They ended the episode making you think someone was dead, or something like that, just to show the exact opposite in the clip that airs 5 seconds after the episode.

Thanks.

Weebs, please leave the thread. Watching Chuck is almost as pleasant as getting a testicle tongue bath from one of Wheezer's cats. Don't ruin that for me.

So many funny scenes in the cargo hold. Zach Levi has to be the master of goofy facial expressions.

She was in Smallville, apparently as Lois Loan. I never watched it though because I'm clearly an idiot.

I stepped away for the 20 seconds before he started doing his little nunchuck routine.  Did he actually flash on that or was he just doing it to try and be intimidating?  Either way, it was awesome.

And I agree, Zach Levi is amazingly goofy on this show.  I was worried they would make him too much of a spy this season, but he's just as ridiculous as ever, yet manages to be believable whenever he flashes on some super spy move.

This post-Olympics run has been great. The cinematography on the bathroom fight is something I could have lived without, but I expect they did it that way to show some of the tension that was going on (beyond the fight itself) with Chuck having to kill the guy and all. I've been wanting it for sometime, but Sarah and Chuck just need to fuck and be done with it. (And it would be great if NBC showed that scene.. A guy can dream)

I'm a little pissed that they're using the exact same story for Sarah that they used for Chuck (watching each other kill somebody in cold blood), but yes, this show has been awesome.  It sucks that they had to cut back so much on the secondary characters because of budgets, but the action scenes have been top-notch.

(Where's my Mr. Awesome dosage this week?) It's pretty clear that this episode was supposed to be the finale but NBC requested a few more so we get some more boners after a couple weeks

I enjoyed the hell out of the two hour finale.  Jeffster and their "two weekend" production of a video for Dead or Alive, Scott Bakula getting shot before he could Quantum Leap, Chuck getting his dad's Seiko in just enough time to keep his brain from exploding.

I'm very much looking forward to Chuck's rag tag team of off the grid spies next year.  Now, they just need to come up with a reason for Sarah and Ellie to have several topless pillow fights and we'll be all set.

It's a pretty bad ass set up. This show is consistently entertaining. There's never a dull episode.

I love Ellie and would like her to take her pants off.

I'm still pissed because my power went out at 7:10 last night so I'm going to have to wait to see this one.

Don't think I don't remember. She was the reason I watched What About Brian.

It's not a bad show.  I catch up on it On Demand most weeks but it's not that great.  The shaky cam fight scene shit to hide the stunt doubles is so awkwardly bad.  The little bearded mexican with the Diego Delgado eyes always creeps me out.  The sister/brother in law story lines suck and there is no reason to even have them on the show any more than to have Ellie dusting in a thong.  If it weren't for Baldwin, I'd probably have quit watching a while ago.

So you're saying it's a terrible show?

Nah, but Casey is the only character really making it entertaining.  It's not bad.

Still my favorite show not named Friday Night Lights.

However, there's no way that black dude (old spice guy, right?) could have picked up that 32" LCD. I worked at the real life equivalent and even though those TVs aren't all that heavy, they don't have the greatest cardboard handles in the world. That thing would have broke. And who carries out iRoombas on a hand truck? Pshaw. They need to make this shit more realistic
